  • Recent Advances in Chronotherapy Targeting Respiratory Diseases
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Pharmaceutics. - : MDPI. - 1999-4923. ; 13:12
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Respiratory diseases contribute to a significant percentage of mortality and morbidity worldwide. The circadian rhythm is a natural biological process where our bodily functions align with the 24 h oscillation (sleep-wake cycle) process and are controlled by the circadian clock protein/gene. Disruption of the circadian rhythm could alter normal lung function. Chronotherapy is a type of therapy provided at specific time intervals based on an individual's circadian rhythm. This would allow the drug to show optimum action, and thereby modulate its pharmacokinetics to lessen unwanted or unintended effects. In this review, we deliberated on the recent advances employed in chrono-targeted therapeutics for chronic respiratory diseases.

  • Programmable silicon photonic circuits powered by MEMS
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present our work to extend silicon photonics with MEMS actuators to enable low-power, large scale programmable photonic circuits. For this, we start from the existing iSiPP50G silicon photonics platform of IMEC, where we add free-standing movable waveguides using a few post-processing steps. This allows us to implement phase shifters and tunable couplers using electrostatically actuated MEMS, while at the same time maintaining all the original functionality of the silicon photonics platform. The MEMS devices are protected using a wafer-level sealing approach and interfaced with custom multi-channel driver and readout electronics.

  • Application of Thermal Spray Coatings in Electrolysers for Hydrogen Production : Advances, Challenges, and Opportunities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ChemNanoMat. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 2199-692X. ; 8:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal spray coatings have the advantage of providing thick and functional coatings from a range of engineering materials. The associated coating processes provide good control of coating thickness, morphology, microstructure, pore size and porosity, and residual strain in the coatings through selection of suitable process parameters for any coating material of interest. This review consolidates scarce literature on thermally sprayed components which are critical and vital constituents (e. g., catalysts (anode/cathode), solid electrolyte, and transport layer, including corrosion-prone parts such as bipolar plates) of the water splitting electrolysis process for hydrogen production. The research shows that there is a gap in thermally sprayed feedstock material selection strategy as well as in addressing modelling needs that can be crucial to advancing applications exploiting their catalytic and corrosion-resistant properties to split water for hydrogen production. Due to readily scalable production enabled by thermal spray techniques, this manufacturing route bears potential to dominate the sustainable electrolyser technologies in the future. While the well-established thermal spray coating variants may have certain limitations in the manner they are currently practiced, deployment of both conventional and novel thermal spray approaches (suspension, solution, hybrid) is clearly promising for targeted development of electrolysers.

  • Study of risk factors for injuries due to cardiopulmonary resuscitation with special focus on the role of the heart : A machine learning analysis of a prospective registry with multiple sources of information (ReCaPTa Study)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Resuscitation Plus. - 2666-5204. ; 17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The study of thoracic injuries and biomechanics during CPR requires detailed studies that are very scarce. The role of the heart in CPR biomechanics has not been determined. This study aimed to determine the risk factors importance for serious ribcage damage due to CPR. Methods: Data were collected from a prospective registry of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest between April 2014 and April 2017. This study included consecutive out-of-hospital CPR attempts undergoing an autopsy study focused on CPR injuries. Cardiac mass ratio was defined as the ratio of real to expected heart mass. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to select clinically relevant variables and subsequently classification tree models were built. The Gini index was used to determine the importance of the associated serious ribcage damage factors. The LUCAS® chest compressions device forces and the cardiac mass were analyzed by linear regression. Results: Two hundred CPR attempts were included (133 manual CPR and 67 mechanical CPR). The mean age of the sample was 60.4 ± 13.5, and 56 (28%) were women. In all, 65.0% of the patients presented serious ribcage damage. From the classification tree build with the clinically relevant variables, age (0.44), cardiac mass ratio (0.26), CPR time (0.22), and mechanical CPR (0.07), in that order, were the most influential factors on serious ribcage damage. The chest compression forces were greater in subjects with higher cardiac mass. Conclusions: The heart plays a key role in CPR biomechanics being cardiac mass ratio the second most important risk factor for CPR injuries.

  • MORPHIC : Programmable Photonic Circuits enabled by Silicon Photonic MEMS
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings Volume 11285 SPIE OPTO - 1-6 February 2020 Silicon Photonics XV. - : SPIE-Intl Soc Optical Eng.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the European project MORPHIC we develop a platform for programmable silicon photonic circuits enabled by waveguide-integrated micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). MEMS can add compact, and low-power phase shifters and couplers to an established silicon photonics platform with high-speed modulators and detectors. This MEMS technology is used for a new class of programmable photonic circuits, that can be reconfigured using electronics and software, consisting of large interconnected meshes of phase shifters and couplers. MORPHIC is also developing the packaging and driver electronics interfacing schemes for such large circuits, creating a supply chain for rapid prototyping new photonic chip concepts. These will be demonstrated in different applications, such as switching, beamforming and microwave photonics.

  • Thermal Spray Coatings for Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Interference Shielding : A Review and Future Challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Engineering Materials. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1438-1656 .- 1527-2648.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review aims to consolidate scattered literature on thermally sprayed coatings with nonionizing electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption and shielding over specific wavelengths potentially useful in diverse applications (e.g., microwave to millimeter wave, solar selective, photocatalytic, interference shielding, thermal barrier-heat/emissivity). Materials EM properties such as electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, electrical conductivity, and dielectric loss are critical due to which a material can respond to absorbed, reflected, transmitted, or may excite surface electromagnetic waves at frequencies typical of electromagnetic radiations. Thermal spraying is a standard industrial practice used for depositing coatings where the sprayed layer is formed by successive impact of fully or partially molten droplets/particles of a material exposed to high or moderate temperatures and velocities. However, as an emerging novel application of an existing thermal spray techniques, some special considerations are warranted for targeted development involving relevant characterization. Key potential research areas of development relating to material selection and coating fabrication strategies and their impact on existing practices in the field are identified. The study shows a research gap in the feedstock materials design and doping, and their complex selection covered by thermally sprayed coatings that can be critical to advancing applications exploiting their electromagnetic properties.
