  • The Discovery and Follow-up of Four Transiting Short-period Sub-Neptunes Orbiting M Dwarfs

    • Sub-Neptunes with radii of 2-3 R ⊕ are intermediate in size between rocky planets and Neptune-sized planets. The orbital properties and bulk compositions of transiting sub-Neptunes provide clues to the formation and evolution of close-in small planets. In this paper, we present the discovery and follow-up of four sub-Neptunes orbiting M dwarfs (TOI-782, TOI-1448, TOI-2120, and TOI-2406), three of which were newly validated by ground-based follow-up observations and statistical analyses. TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b have radii of R p = 2.740 − 0.079 + 0.082 R ⊕ , 2.769 − 0.068 + 0.073 R ⊕ , 2.120 ± 0.067 R ⊕, and 2.830 − 0.066 + 0.068 R ⊕ and orbital periods of P = 8.02, 8.11, 5.80, and 3.08 days, respectively. Doppler monitoring with the Subaru/InfraRed Doppler instrument led to 2σ upper limits on the masses of <19.1 M ⊕, <19.5 M ⊕, <6.8 M ⊕, and <15.6 M ⊕ for TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b, respectively. The mass-radius relationship of these four sub-Neptunes testifies to the existence of volatile material in their interiors. These four sub-Neptunes, which are located above the so-called “radius valley,” are likely to retain a significant atmosphere and/or an icy mantle on the core, such as a water world. We find that at least three of the four sub-Neptunes (TOI-782 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b), orbiting M dwarfs older than 1 Gyr, are likely to have eccentricities of e ∼ 0.2-0.3. The fact that tidal circularization of their orbits is not achieved over 1 Gyr suggests inefficient tidal dissipation in their interiors.

    • A new method of in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy induced by secondary fusion reactions, 37P+9Be and 46Ar+9Be is presented. Low-energy secondary beams of 37P and 46Ar ions of ∼5 MeV/A were developed in order to induce fusion evaporation reactions. Excited states of nuclei in the vicinity of 48Ca, 49-52Ti and 46Ca, were studied by the method as well as β decay of the secondary beam 46Ar. Gamma-gamma coincidence and excitation function analysis were performed to study high-spin states of Ti isotopes.

    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

    • Leptin (Lep) is a key factor for the energy homeostasis in mammals, but the available data of its role in teleosts are not conclusive. There are large sequence differences among mammalian and teleost Lep, both at the gene and protein level. Therefore, in order to characterize Lep function in fish, the use of species-specific Lep is crucial. In this study, the cDNA sequence of salmon leptin a1 (lepa1) was used to establish a production protocol for recombinant salmon LepA1 (rsLepA1) in Escherichia coli, that enabled a final yield of 1.7 mg pure protein L⁻¹ culture. The effects of 20-day administration of rsLepA1 on growth and brain neuroendocrine peptide gene expression [npy, cart, agrp (-1 and -2), pomc (-a1, -a2, -a2s, and -b)] were studied in juvenile, immature Atlantic salmon (96.5±2.1g) fed a commercial diet to satiation. Intraperitoneal osmotic pumps were used to deliver rsLepA1 at four different concentrations (calculated pumping rates were 0, 0.1, 1.0 and 10 ng g⁻¹ h⁻¹). In the highest dosage group (10 ng g⁻¹ h⁻¹), the growth rate was significantly reduced, and pomc-a1 gene expression was higher than in controls. The results support the lipostatic hypothesis and suggest that sLepA1 reduces growth in Atlantic salmon by affecting food intake through the central pro-opiomelanocortin pathway.
