  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes

    • Analysis of 273 ancient horse genomes reveals that modern domestic horses originated in the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region. Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare(1). However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling(2-4) at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc(3). Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia(5) and Anatolia(6), have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographic and temporal origins of modern domestic horses have remained unknown. Here we pinpoint the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region, as the homeland of modern domestic horses. Furthermore, we map the population changes accompanying domestication from 273 ancient horse genomes. This reveals that modern domestic horses ultimately replaced almost all other local populations as they expanded rapidly across Eurasia from about 2000 bc, synchronously with equestrian material culture, including Sintashta spoke-wheeled chariots. We find that equestrianism involved strong selection for critical locomotor and behavioural adaptations at the GSDMC and ZFPM1 genes. Our results reject the commonly held association(7) between horseback riding and the massive expansion of Yamnaya steppe pastoralists into Europe around 3000 bc(8,9) driving the spread of Indo-European languages(10). This contrasts with the scenario in Asia where Indo-Iranian languages, chariots and horses spread together, following the early second millennium bc Sintashta culture(11,12).

  • Multiwavelength follow-up of a rare IceCube neutrino multiplet

    • On February 17, 2016, the IceCube real-time neutrino search identified, for the first time, three muon neutrino candidates arriving within 100 s of one another, consistent with coming from the same point in the sky. Such a triplet is expected once every 13.7 years as a random coincidence of background events. However, considering the lifetime of the follow-up program the probability of detecting at least one triplet from atmospheric background is 32%. Follow-up observatories were notified in order to search for an electromagnetic counterpart. Observations were obtained by Swift's X-ray telescope, by ASAS-SN, LCO and MASTER at optical wavelengths, and by VERITAS in the very-high-energy gamma-ray regime. Moreover, the Swift BAT serendipitously observed the location 100 s after the first neutrino was detected, and data from the Fermi LAT and HAWC observatory were analyzed. We present details of the neutrino triplet and the follow-up observations. No likely electromagnetic counterpart was detected, and we discuss the implications of these constraints on candidate neutrino sources such as gamma-ray bursts, core-collapse supernovae and active galactic nucleus flares. This study illustrates the potential of and challenges for future follow-up campaigns.

  • Electronic structure, galvanomagnetic and magnetic properties of the bismuth subhalides Bi4I4 and Bi4Br4

    • Two bismuth-rich subhalides, Bi4Br4 and Bi4I4, featuring extended quasi one-dimensional metallic fragments in their structures, have been investigated. The gas-phase technique of crystal growth has been refined for obtaining large (up to 5 mm long) single crystals. Electronic structure calculations on three-dimensional structures of both compounds have been performed (DFT level, hybrid B3LYP functional), predicting a semiconducting behavior for both compounds, with an indication of possible directional anisotropy of electric conductivity. Galvanomagnetic (resistance, magnetoresistance, Hall effect, thermopower) and magnetic (temperature and field dependence of magnetization) properties have been measured experimentally. Both compounds are found to be diamagnetic, room-temperature semiconductors with n-type conductivity. While Bi4Br4 demonstrates a typical case of one dimensionality, the difference in magnetoresistivity between Bi4Br4 and Bi4I4 indicates some weak interactions between isolated bismuth metallic fragments within the bismuth substructures.

    • The new mixed-valence octanuclear cobalt carboxylate complexes [CoII4CoIII4(μ4-O)4-(μ3-OMe)4(μ-O2CR)6(O2CR)2(H2O)6]·4H2O, where R = Et (3) or n-Pr (4), were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes 3 and 4 have a molecular octanuclear structure, and they are valence trapped, and contain four cobalt atoms Co3+ in the central cubane fragment with four cobalt atoms Co2+ at the periphery of the molecules. The molecules of the complexes are stabilized by four intramolecular hydrogen bonds and are linked, together with water solvent molecules, by intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional supramolecular system.

  • Self-interstitial migration during ion irradiation of boron delta-doped silicon

    • Boron delta layers in silicon, grown by molecular beam epitaxy and characterized by the secondary ion mass spectrometry, have been employed to investigate the migration of silicon self-interstitials during irradiation with MeV protons in the 500-850 degreesC temperature range. After growth, the samples were thinned from the backside to a thickness that made them transparent for the proton energies used. As a result, the generation rate of point defects can be considered as essentially uniform throughout the samples. However: the evolution of the boron profiles is almost identical to that observed after injection of self-interstitials caused by thermal oxidation of the samples at elevated temperature. This strongly indicates that the surface acts as a reflective boundary for the migrating self-interstitials or/ and an efficient sink for mobile vacancies. Furthermore, higher value of interstitial supersaturation in the near-surface region in proton-irradiated samples is consistent with experimentally detected depth dependence for immobile fraction in boron clusters. Then, activation energy of boron mobilization, (0.9 +/- 0.4) eV, was attributed to the dissociation of boron clusters.

  • Amplification of the signal in triode structures of ion detectors based on 6H-SIC epitaxial films

    • The possibility of about 50 times the inneramplification of signals in SiC-based detectors of short-range ions is shown. The detector has an n-p-n+-like structure, where the p-type base was grown epitaxially on a 6H n+-SiC substrate. To complete the structure a Schottky barrier was made on top. Detector parameters were investigated in a "floating base" regime. Alpha particles from 244Cm were used and the augmentation of signal (E) with increasing applied voltage (U) was investigated. A superlinear increase of E was observed with a significant (tens of times) amplification of the introduced by the alpha particle nonequilibrium charge. It was also found that the nonuniformity of the diffusion-drift carrier transport parameters in the films does not exceed 10%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    • The physical properties of the family of cyclotetravanadates A(2)M(VO3)(4), where A=Na,Ag and M=Ca,Sr, have been studied by means of x-ray powder diffraction, neutron diffraction, electron diffraction, infrared, Raman, NMR, photoexcitation and pulse cathode beam excitation, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and band structure calculations. The differences between the structural, vibrational, luminescence, and electronic properties of the alkali metal-containing [Na2Ca(VO3)(4) and Na2Sr(VO3)(4)] and the d metal-containing cyclotetravanadates [Ag2Ca(VO3)(4) and Ag2Sr(VO3)(4)] are analyzed. Na2Ca(VO3)(4), Ag2Ca(VO3)(4), Na2Sr(VO3)(4), and Ag2Sr(VO3)(4) have tetragonal structures, P4/nbm, with a=10.438 49(6), 10.445 24(5), 10.634 49(4), and 10.625 74(6), and c=4.938 73(5), 4.968 45(5), 4.962 05(4), and 4.979 30(4) angstrom, respectively. The main structural feature of A(2)M(VO3)(4) is the tetracyclic [V4O12] units. The hybridized O 2p-V 3d states of the tetracyclic [V4O12] units have a dominant influence on the electronic structure of these compounds. The compounds are semiconducting with a local density approximation band gap increasing, from 1.85 eV for Ag2Ca(VO3)(4) to 3.02 eV for Na2Ca(VO3)(4). The prospects of these compounds as advanced materials for detectors of photon and corpuscular radiation as well as for color correction of light emission sources such as lamp and light emitting diode sources are discussed.
