  • Leadership and Practice Theories : Reconstructing Leadership as a Phenomenon
  • 2023. - 2nd
  • Ingår i: The SAGE Handbook of Leadership. - : Sage Publications. - 9781529769067 ; , s. 16-27
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we describe how leadership studies have benefitted by (re)attending to practice theories. We elaborate on how these theories have offered the possibility to develop new understandings of leadership by reimagining the study of this phenomenon. The first section of the chapter presents an introduction to practice theories and their entrance in leadership studies. Then, in the second section, we illustrate what studies mobilizing practice theories have contributed to. In the third section we dig into a discussion of the different positionings that researchers drawing on practice theories have taken, in order to provide the reader with the possibility to navigate the sensitizing framework that these theories provide. The chapter ends with a discussion of criticalities and possibilities, including the possible need to advance our methodological tools.

  • Stress-Inducing and Anxiety-Ridden : A Practice-Based Approach to the Construction of Status-Bestowing Evaluations in Research Funding
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Minerva. - : Springer. - 0026-4695 .- 1573-1871. ; 60, s. 397-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More than resource allocations, evaluations of funding applications have become central instances for status bestowal in academia. Much attention in past literature has been devoted to grasping the status consequences of prominent funding evaluations. But little attention has been paid to understanding how the status-bestowing momentum of such evaluations is constructed. Throughout this paper, our aim is to develop new knowledge on the role of applicants in constructing certain funding evaluations as events with crucial importance for status bestowal. Using empirical material from retrospective interviews with Sweden-based early-career scientists who, successfully or unsuccessfully, applied for European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants, our findings show how these scientists interlinked experiences from various practices to construct the ERC's evaluations, in general, and the final-stage appointments at Brussels' Madou Plaza Tower, in particular, as apex-esque, crescendo-like status-bestowing events. We discuss our findings as instructional, preparatory, and demarcative practices that, by extension, distribute responsibility for the construction and reinforcement of high-stakes, career-defining evaluations through which considerable stress and anxiety is generated in academia.

  • Readingwriting : becoming-together in a Composition
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Culture and Organization. - 1475-9551 .- 1477-2760.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we share with the reader our individual and collective experience of a reading circle organised during the pandemic, at a time of social distancing. The collective reading allowed ‘us’ to become-with other humans, non-humans, and more-than-humans with the materiality of different bodies. The reading circle allowed individual vulnerability to be shared in a process of becoming-together a multiple ‘Author’ who authored a ‘Composition’. We thus propose to the reader a Composition, in which we experiment with an embodied process of writing, where a drawing and words are mingled in-between poesy and prose. In their being intertwined, reading- and writing-together enabled a different ‘academicity’, emerging as an alternative to an individualistic experience of the neo-liberal Academia.

  • A Practice Theory in Practice : Analytical Consequences in the Study of Organization and Socio-Technical Change
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Appealing calls are often made towards the study of phenomena through so-called practice theory. However, the implications of the use of practice theory, if taken seriously in analysis, are rarely discussed. The chief concern of this thesis is the applicability of the most radical dimensions of practice theory. By drawing from the key proponent of contemporary practice theory, Theodore Schatzki, this thesis assesses how practice theory can inform empirical analysis and what it can offer organizational studies in particular.Defining practice theory as an interpretative lens, this thesis proposes a methodology for the study of practices that finds organization in two senses, within practices and between them. Putting such a proposition to the test, a study of socio-technical change at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency is utilized as an illustration of the use of practice theory and how empirical issues tread forth in analysis. The illustration shows how classical organizational issues are re-imagined by proposing an alternate kind of context; practice as context. Not solely a descriptive effort to grasp what people do, the study presents how doing is explicable by examining the multiple contexts of organizational life. Having defined practices as unfolding phenomena, the practice analysis also presents a moderately processual analysis fitting for the study of material re-arrangement and the re-organization of practices. The distinctiveness of the practice analysis, and the interpretative work it demands, is further demonstrated by comparison with established ways of analyzing activity and organizational phenomena, including such approaches that imagine organizations as cohesive wholes and those that study organizing. This thesis offers an approach for those who want to undertake empirical research using practice theory, demonstrating its unique possibilities. Such an approach is of interest for those who want to heed calls to attend to the practicalities and materiality of organizations.

  • Affect and imagination – exploring the intensities of gaining research access
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper explores the experiences of a detailed security check that the first author of this paper had do subject himself to in order to gain research access to a high-security facility where he is to perform an ethnographic study. In doing so, the paper accounts for a stressful experience, the intensities, i.e. the affective dimensions, of gaining research access. These are tied to wider discussions concerning the role of imagination -and how imagination exists in relation to a reseach group.

  • Automating to control : The unexpected consequences of modern automated work delivery in practice
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323. ; 28:1, s. 115-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores how automation efforts with the intent to control work in modern work places can unfold. Building on a longitudinal study of a governmental agency’s efforts to implement automated work delivery technology to enforce work guidelines, I show how aspects of work might become more automated but the rationale of automation might fail to manifest as originally intended. Technology and the formal structure inscribed into it to control work might conflict with the demands of work practice. Moreover, the findings show how automated control can be resisted by workers through subversive organizing in teams to reacquire work discretion. Through an analysis of automated control in practice, this paper contributes to discussions of technologies of control and how pragmatic resistance can emerge to counteract such technology.

  • Doing security in projects : Exploring the plurality of security in practice
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the issue of security. Building on a conceptualization of security as organizational phenomenon, drawing on theories of routines and practice theoretical understandings of organization, this paper presents how security in organizational practice can be understood. Preliminary findings are discussed to suggest how security can exist both in an organization in the guise of policy and in practice. Particularly challenges in managing security are elucidated.

  • Making Do with Limited Transparency of Sensitive Information in Secretive Organizations : Collective Information Literacy Through Hinting
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Information Literacy and The Digitalisation of the Workplace. - : Facet Publishing. - 9781783305810
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we build on the concept of information literacy when exploring sensitive information in workplaces. Drawing on an empirical study of project work in a high-security organization, we find that when information is sensitive and not readily available to everyone, information literacy is only made possible because of how organizational members work collectively to make do with the sings and cues they are able and allowed to disclose to each other. In these cases, the group can only achieve information literacy together through what we call hinting.

  • On responses to crisis and subsequent (non)-significant change in high hazard organizing
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High hazard organizations are often praised for their ability to remain stable and reliable. In this paper, we draw on a longitudinal case study from 2019 to 2023 from a high hazard organization and its project work to examine how such an organization reacted to the COVID 19 pandemic. As we show, an organization prone to avoid the use of new technologies and to favor on-site work can experience a seemingly significant change while its actors do not perceive such change as significantly different. We argue that an important consideration is not whether change has happened but whether it is significantly different in light of core aspects of organizational practices, such as their teleological structure and core concerns. Indeed, a high hazard organization might thus change meeting and communicative practices while remaining the same in aspects that matter more – leading to paradoxical narratives of change and non-change to manifest simultaneously.

  • Practices and Institutions – Bridging the gap between contemporary practice theory and neo-institutional theory
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Neo-institutional theory has become a dominant guide in the study of legitimacy and normativity in the social sciences. Practice theories have only recently garnered attention as an alternative way of treating normativity through a renewed interest in social practices. While the foci of these approaches vary, most obviously by the kind of studies each inspire, both conceptualize the issue of normativity as a worthwhile point of inquiry. At the heart of each lies a concern for the question of why people act as they do, hinting at the necessity to understand socially appropriate ways of behaving in order to answer such a question. This commonality is seldom explicitly touched upon, and neither have recent appeals to use practice theory or recent developments in the study of neo-institutional theory seriously worked on bridging potential lines of inquiry. The purpose of this paper is to touch upon the issue of how a concern for practices and institutions, as understood by practice theory and neo-institutional theory, have the potential to provide ways of studying the social that expand each into possibilities in a shared research direction.

  • Is the potential impact of Fintech on employeewell-being acknowledged?
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study scrutinizes how the effect of artificial intelligence on workerwelfare is discussed in banking-related news media. We reviewed 162articles from 2021 to 2023 and found only 47 articles that mentionedworkers. Among these articles, where business leaders and other industryexperts were interviewed, a prevailing trend was the lack of attention toworker welfare concerns. However, Fintech innovations pose potentialthreats to working conditions if left unchecked. Despite academicevidence of work intensification and surveillance from AI, the publicdiscourse, including that of union executives, lacks acknowledgment ofthese issues. Urgent action is needed to address these overlookedconcerns and ensure the well-being of bank employees amidsttechnological advancements, now and in the future.
