  • Becoming the expert constructing health knowledge in epistemic communities online
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Information, Communication and Society. - : Routledge. - 1369-118X .- 1468-4462. ; 23:4, s. 507-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From a discourse analytic framework, the article analyses health blogs and patient’s forum discussions in which parents to children with congenital heart defects recontextualize medical professional knowledge and share their own experiences. The study show how the two types of online media may serve as a means for parents to attain expert status in their own case by sharing lay knowledge expressed as an amalgamation of the two key perspectives – professional and experienced – as an indivisible unit. Monological discourses, such as narrating, in blogs and more direct and immediate responses in forum discussions are noted as examples of differences in how medical facts are explained and negotiated, how advice is provided and how patient expertise is created. The study also show how blogs and especially forum discussions are used to problematize the validity of actions and opinions of medical staff. The role of developing patient expertise in epistemic communities online may therefore come with a risk of spreading misrepresentation of medical cases.

  • Communication of support and critique in Swedish virtual community threads about prenatal diagnoses of fetal anomalies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2393 .- 1471-2393. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A prenatal diagnosis of a fetal anomaly involves acute grief and psychological distress. The Internet has the potential to provide virtual support following the diagnosis. The overall aim was to explore communication of support and critique in Swedish virtual community threads about prenatal diagnoses of fetal anomalies. Methods: Systematic searches in Google resulted in 117 eligible threads. Fifteen of these were purposefully selected and subjected to deductive content analysis. Results:The virtual support involved mainly emotional support (meaning units n = 1,992/3,688, 54 %) and was described as comforting and empowering. Posters with experience of a prenatal diagnosis appreciated the virtual support, including the opportunity to gain insight into other cases and to write about one’s own experience. Critique of the decision to continue or terminate the pregnancy occurred, primarily against termination of pregnancy. However, it was met with defense. Conclusions: Peer support, mainly emotional, is provided and highly appreciated in threads about prenatal diagnoses of a fetal anomaly. Critique of the decision to terminate the pregnancy occurs in virtual community threads about prenatal diagnoses, but the norm is to not question the decision. Future studies need to investigate if virtual peer support promotes psychosocial function following a prenatal diagnosis and what medium would be most suitable for these types of supportive structures.

  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The study investigated subject integrated teaching and vocational knowledge in one Health and Social Care program. The material was collected ethnographically, during a period of a school semester (5 months), and analysed according to the Activity-Theoretical concepts actions, goals and tools. The results identified five goals for subject integrated teaching: the legitimacy of Swedish as a school subject; a focus on linguistic prescriptivism; the identity of vocational subjects; a predominant medical focus in vocational subjects; and a professional language. Further six recurrent tools were identified: a fictional book; a teacher-prepared hand-out; a teacher-constructed case report; teacher-examples from health care; and linguistic rules. There was a theoretical kind of vocational knowledge with focus on language issues, on medical aspects of care, and on a professional language. In conclusion, subject integrated teaching contributed with more than each of the specific subjects contributed with and simultaneously tensions between goals representing different subjects were found. However, tools were shared between subjects.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Dagens nyheter. - : AB Dagens nyheter. - 1101-2447.

  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation investigates the occurrence and nature of public literary conversations within the discipline of Translation and Interpreting Studies. Alongside a macro-sociological exploration of public literary talks in Sweden from 1998–2018 – in relation to literary translations published during the same period – the dissertation mainly presents detailed interaction analyses of three interpreter-mediated public literary conversations.Public literary conversations with writers, be they foreign or domestic, have gained increasing popularity in Sweden during the past decades. Talks with foreign writers are mainly held by a few large official organizers, such as the annual Gothenburg Book Fair and the International Authors’ Scene in Stockholm. Conversations that are not conducted in English require interpretation, mostly in the consecutive mode, with the interpreter sitting on the stage along with the writer and the moderator. Interpreting strategies evolve to cope with both the formal constraints and the amplifications of a staged conversation, which is generated by the contextual setting of the literary interview and its narrative turns-in-talk nature. Framed as interviews on life and culture, they range in character from spontaneous and entertaining talk to discussions of more profound ideas, and they often entail narrative passages. These properties, as well as the shifting between languages, have formal implications for their sequence structure. The empirical data of the thesis consists of two parts: 1) a data base of 1382 registered events, and 2) a corpus of 29 video-recorded conversations, from which three were selected for separate in-depth studies. Concepts from translation sociology are applied in study I to expound the mapped frequency and distribution of languages within public literary conversations during a twenty-year period in Sweden. The following three studies explore interpreter-mediated public literary conversation as shared, situated, and staged activity. Each conversation is characterized by a specific solution as to how talk in interaction is organized. These three studies draw on theories of interpreting as social interaction. Multimodal interaction-analytical transcription processes have been used as the core methodological approach. In study II, patterns within the interpreted conversation are tracked with topical episode analysis to see how the interpreter maintains coherence in rendering multiturn-passages of the conversation. In study III, the focus is on various phenomena that – in interaction between the writer and the interpreter – can form a unity of embodied human expression, such as prosodic trajectories and the evolvement of gestures and talk. Study IV addresses the impact of narratological elements on the sequence structure and studies how all three participants on stage, in front of the audience, communicate their involvement.

  • Hållbar dialog? : Retorik i möten om svensk kärnavfallshantering
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Rhetorical choices and strategies are central to democratic decision-making, especially regarding decisions on matters that are open for argumentation depending on perspective. The thesis considers public meetings on Swedish nuclear waste management as an example of rhetorical argumentation, specifically in relation to the project of finding a place for final deposition of the high-level spent nuclear fuel – with local geological investigation as a critical part of that project. Project managers have met with other organizations such as protest groups, associations of experts and authorities on several occasions, mainly through local and national hearings. The thesis is guided by a research question regarding the most salient challenges to a resilient rhetorical dialogue for nuclear waste management. The concept of rhetorical dialogue is applied in two ways. Firstly to explain the lack of dialogue that is experienced by participants despite arrangements to reach consensus-oriented dialogue in the Habermasian sense. Secondly in a discussion of rhetorical relations that might explain ambiguity in participants’ interpretations of each other. Three meetings are compared: two local meetings at sites of geological investigation (Kynnefjäll 1979 and Kolsjön 1985) and one national meeting held in Stockholm in 2008. Research materials have been collected from the archives of participating organizations and from interviews with participants. Analyses of these materials are combined with a rhetorical analysis of meeting recordings, with a specific focus on question-reply argumentation. One main conclusion is that the principal rhetorical challenges concern the roles of participants in relation to the rhetorical situation, the establishment of rhetorical genre in the format of hearings, and inclusion of relevant perspectives in the early project phase.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis studies elementary school teachers’ language use in written assessments of students, and problematises the relation between teachers’ experiences of written assessment and the institutional and social expectations of professional language use.The study is based on three types of material: questionnaires answered by 39 teachers, interviews with 3 school principals and approximately 2,200 assessments of students, written according to three different templates. The assessments are analysed using methods derived from stylistics and textanalysis. The analyses of the texts focuses on speech acts, the content of the assessment and linguistic choices. The teachers’ testimonials in the questionnaires and the principals’ perspectives provide contextual information necessary for the understanding of the various forms of language used in the assessments. The theories applied are critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, e.g., 1992), Roberts & Sarangi’s model of language usage in professional practices (1999,2003), Bernstein’s theory of discourses in pedagogical practices (1990, 1996) and Gerrevall’s (2008) theory of assessment practices. The results indicate that the teachers’ language use positions them on a scale from formal to informal, and reflect different conditions for writing assessments. The templates for assessments, the statements of teachers and principals illustrate a wide range of institutional, collegial and personal language use. Teachers use six macro speech acts in their assessments: they inform, evaluate, summarise, guide, express feelings and attitudes, and seek dialogue. The content of the assessments focuses on the students’ achievements, processes, personal qualities and behaviour, but also on psychosocial evaluation, which promotes self-esteem and enhances selfregulation ability. In the assessments, teachers often reproduce parts of previously used texts, switch between formal, institutional, and bureaucratic language and context-bound, informal, and dialogical language use. The results show four typical roles that a teacher can assume: the reporter, the processor, the educator, and the coach. Teachers embrace these roles, and switch between them when navigating between institutional and social expectations of form, function and focus of the assessments, which can partly be explained by the influence of New Public Management on teachers’ documentation practices.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • A professional–cultural approach to discrimination – constructions of police discrimination in two European countries
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Multicultural Discourses. - : Routledge. - 1744-7143 .- 1747-6615. ; 10:3, s. 313-331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From a critical analytical framework, this article analyses survey responses conveying Swedish and German police officers' understanding of discriminatory behaviour in the workplace. The article relates discursive constructions of discrimination made in respondents' accounts of potential factors behind discrimination, and in positioning oneself. Taking into account previous studies on constructions of discrimination, this study develops and proposes some key strategies of explication of the cultural meanings assigned to forms of discrimination as well as justification of or resistance to discriminatory behaviour in professional contexts. Resistance to discrimination is displayed through (1) exposition of reasons behind discrimination, (2) display of a critical self-image and (3) strategic choice of mode of report. Differences to be found between Swedish and German respondents are attention to detail, to underlying factors in discrimination and to typical communicative practices regarding discriminatory behaviour. Sexism is acknowledged as a violation to a comparatively high degree, whereas racism is reported much less.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Discourse & Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1750-4813 .- 1750-4821.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Communication professionals have a paramount role in global crisis. What did they learn during the covid pandemic that could be used in future global crisis? The aim of this article is to identify and analyze strategy changes among communicators in municipalities and how their conceptions of communicated knowledge transformed during the pandemic. Retrospective interviews and textual material are analyzed with a framework of Mediated Discourse Analysis in combination with Legitimation Code Theory. The analysis shows that the work of the communicators was characterized by collaboration with other professional groups and the civil society, and that the complexity and important time aspects during this crisis gave birth to semi-new, reinvented, discursive tools in the shape of text genres. The communicators’ conceived relevant knowledge as concept-driven and developed the conception that conveyance of knowledge should be thoroughly planned in a way that takes complexity into account.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we examine how traditional views of normality are negotiated, indorsed and resisted when talking about children with heart defects. Having as a starting point an ethnographic project that aimed to study knowledge construction when being pregnant or having a child with a heart defect, we focus on argumentation put forward by clinicians and parents in order to understand the forms that normality takes in relation to children's health and illness and the way that it is constructed argumentatively and linguistically. More specifically, we draw data from recorded doctor-patient consultations, ethnographic interviews and entries from family blogs and forums and focus on those instances where normality is negotiated as a means of providing a medical consultation or of taking and motivating decisions about the child's health and everyday life. The analysis is conducted by identifying content and logical topics in the data and showing how constructions of normality and alternative conceptions are constructed in discourse. Discourses are additionally related to discursive, semiotic framing and the realization of norms. Our results highlight a duality that is being painted both in the clinicians and in the parents' discourse when negotiating the illness and the accompanying risks in the child's everyday life. Some of the traditional norms being re-constructed and re-negotiated in the data are those of stigmatization, diversity, responsibility and freedom of choice.

  • Förhandlares kommunikativa kompetens
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this study is language use in negotiations and the communicative competence of professional negotiators. The aim of the study is to make explicit the communicative competence through analysis of language use in four areas: levels of action, topical structure, meta-communication, and coherence. Negotiation ability has been identified and studied within a theoretical framework of linguistic pragmatics, outlined by participant perspective orientated and functional pragmatics, and by a socio-pragmatic perspective on joint action. Linguistic data have been analysed as parts of an activity type, a concept concerned with the connection between language use and the overall activity of which language forms a part. The data consist of a role play, dealing with an interstate diplomatic issue of monetary compensation after an environmental incident. The role play was performed by five different groups, with a total of twenty participants: ten Swedish and ten Russian negotiators. Two of the role plays were performed by well-experienced negotiators, and three role plays by participants without such experience. Three main variables have been used for comparison: experience, participant nationality and the assigned position of the negotiation. The data have been analysed both with quantitative and qualitative methods. Results show that competence is generally indicated by the special ways professional negotiators use communicative projects, create phase structures, and organize topics in local turns-of-talk and globally in the talk. Competence is also indicated by meta-communication, which is used for constructing participant roles and authority, as well as global coherence, all of which contribute to a formal level of interactive style. The interplay of power is performed within a frame of good relations, which is maintained in interaction. Professional negotiators seem to be aware of the importance of creating a common ground in interaction. What aspects contribute to the construction of a common ground can be based on a general premise that awareness and experience combine to create the main rationale for a person to act in a correct way. The results entail a professional network practice over-arching linguistic and cultural systems, where general norms of the activity type of negotiation are combined with specific institutional norms. Negotiators’ national background has however not appeared significant.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active listening in conversation is considered an important professional duty within nursing in general and in medical telephone advice service in particular. This can be accomplished in several ways, often by the use of minimal responses, such as in back channeling and short vocal feedback signals. The aim of this article is to explore the professional use of feedback signals in medical advice calls. Previous research has reported a variety of functions of feedback signals, both in professional contexts and in telephone calls, and such functions include continuers and empathic and channeling tokens. The results of my present study indicate that the feedback signals in telephone advice mainly belong to one of a number of information-oriented subtypes. Referential signals are the most frequent, but other commonly-used signals have regulatory, channeling, or phatic functions. Emotional- affective signals are also used, but to a less degree than in e.g. psychotherapy. The different functions can be distinguished and defined by prosodic features used in their production. Feedback signals usually appear at syntactic borders, except for empathic signals, which are uttered more freely. The signals seem to be part of a professional practice in which the nurse continuously and pedagogically adapts to the emergent situation and the caller. It is suggested that the form of feedback signals may be conventionalized to some degree, a finding that, however, needs to be further explored.

  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Language in society (London. Print). - : Cambridge University Press. - 0047-4045 .- 1469-8013. ; 48:5, s. 721-743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the semiotic spaces occupied by organizations working against discrimination in Sweden. Expressions of identity, norm critique, and political goals are studied in relation to word production and language policy and planning. The study departs from interviews with representatives from three organizations within the hbtqi, antiracist, and disability movements. Other resources connected to them have also been analyzed, such as glossaries. Theoretically, this study draws on Yuri Lotman's concept of semiospheres, allowing the analysis to weigh in the whole semiotic process, including meaning production, policy work, and concrete word production. This approach completes an analysis of indexical orders. The results show that (a) organizations are aware of the importance of linguistic choices, (b) when new concepts and words are spread to the public, tension can arise and sometimes objections, and (c) word meanings change when used in public discourse. (Language policy and planning, semiosphere, indexical order, hbtqi, antiracism, disability, discrimination).

  • Ingår i: Discourse, Context & Media. - : Elsevier. - 2211-6958 .- 2211-6966. ; 13:Part B, s. 98-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From a discourse analytic framework, this article analyses an online forum in which users give each other support in relation to a medical problem. The article relates sequences of dialogue between active users in this health forum from the perspective of digital literacy, informational support giving and rapport building. Taking into account previous studies on communication via medical forums, support giving and identity construction, this study develops and proposes some key strategies of explication of how knowledge plays a key role and is assigned to establishing contact as well as adapting themselves to other users of the forum. The role of epistemic parts in the forums is displayed through (1) encouraging further interaction, (2) bonding, and (3) attracting eligible dialogue partners. Skilful users are shown to share knowledge with each other in an informal, yet specific and substantial way. Posters are authored in flexible ways through a balance between knowledge input and emotional support giving. Knowledge is thus framed by the effects of the entanglement of epistemic and affective stances - not only by information exchanges.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article takes an interest in words and expressions evolving as part of the fight against discrimination, derogatory attitudes and oppression. A point of departure is that linguistic changes relating to increased diversity sometimes become the object of public criticism, which in turn may produce challenges to writers and journalists, as well as to language-planning activities. The aim is to investigate new naming practices within a framework of political justice agendas of people facing discrimination, and to relate this type of language development to the work of languageplanning institutions. This study is mainly based on interviews with representatives of three Swedish organizations whose members are engaged in activism or education: the disability movement, the LGBTQ movement, and an antiracist organization. It is also based on text examples from Mediearkivet and Korp (Språkbanken) relating public discourse. Analytical results indicate that different ideological standpoints (such as tolerance policies or norm critique) generate different types of naming practices and word meanings that often exist in parallel. Suggested language-planning activities to enable viable recommendations could involve an update of ideological points of view and the identification of meaning variation regarding potentially useful expressions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay examines how the Swedish disability movement creates policies involving naming practices as a means for self-presentation. The study takes its departure from two kinds of empirical data: websites of specific disability organizations and an interview with representatives of a national disability organization. Different angles of problems associated with terms for self-description are discussed mainly from a rhetorical-agency perspective. Through the analysis of data, I show how different political goals are connected to naming practices, resulting in ambivalence toward ongoing linguistic innovation processes, especially those with roots in norm criticism.

  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Language Planning. - : Routledge. - 1466-4208 .- 1747-7506. ; 21:5, s. 532-547
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article gives a presentation of the Swedish Language act and its application and reception by the public. Ten years have passed since its introduction, and for this reason a study was conducted by the Swedish Language council about what kind of issues were brought to governmental and local authorities by the public. By the collection of e-mail from the public presenting questions or comments in connection to the law this study could show two main topics. A little less than half of the e-mails were concerned about two of the national minority languages in Sweden, Finnish and Meänkieli, mostly from an educational perspective. Another main group of e-mails were concerned with the situation for sign language. The remaining minority languages and others issues related to the Language Act were hardly mentioned at all. Conclusions to be drawn are that strong lobbying groups do invoke legislation that can be associated with their aims, and that there may be other parts of the legislation that better cover the rights that the e-mailers wish to defend or that the Language act is still unknown as to its content.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Language and Discrimination. - : Equinox Publishing. - 2397-2637 .- 2397-2645. ; 5:1, s. 28-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the relationship between official language planning and policies concerning language usage that are increasingly emerging in anti-discriminatory contexts. It is suggested that the social function of lexical meaning needs to be given more attention, i.e. the meaning that arises from a person’s choice of words, especially in public discourse and debate. For this reason, it is further suggested that public debates be analysed with metapragmatic concepts providing useful links between lexical indexes to (ideological) loyalties and social identity or attribution of social identity. The notion of a diverse meaning allocation is contextualised in the principles governing official language planning agencies in Sweden. It is concluded that the prevalence of, for example, plain language principles in official language planning may be balanced with a more complex policy, taking a larger span of potential lexical significance into consideration.

  • Boosting young citizens’ deontic status : Interactional allocation of rights-to-decide in participatory democracy meetings
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores the social organization of rights-to-decide in participatory democracy meetings where adolescents are invited. In such meetings, young citizens are given the opportunity to influence decision-makers and participate in determining future political action. Specifically, this thesis focuses on how social inclusion in decision-making is accomplished in adolescent-politician interaction as well as youth-peer interaction. Employing a Conversation Analytic perspective, naturally occurring participatory democracy meetings are analyzed to explore how adolescents are offered possibilities to influence decisions. The data investigated consists of a popup democracy workshop and a yearlong participatory democracy project (approx. 81 h), where adolescents are invited to contribute to decision-making. Three papers comprise the current thesis and examine 1) how adolescents are encouraged to participate in decision-making, 2) how a youth participatory role is delimited, and 3) how jointness is accomplished in decision-making. These questions are approached with a social deontic framework where human powerplay is investigated through participants’ interactional negotiations of rights to determine action. The analysis reveals that the participating adults’ pep talks and instructions offer a narrow adolescent role of influence. Inclusion therefore ultimately becomes alignment to adults' conceptions of who the adolescents are and how they should contribute to decision-making. Furthermore, the analysis shows how adult community representatives elicit adolescents’ negative emotional experiences and transform these into deontic building blocks in the impending decision-making. Community representatives’ superior deontic rights permeate the initiatives of inclusion directed at adolescents. Regarding jointness, the analysis reveals that, in adolescent-politician interaction, jointness is not accomplished, rather asymmetries of power are re-established by participants. However, in adolescent peer interaction joint decision-making is accomplished through verbal, embodied and material resources. By studying interactional efforts of inclusion, this thesis tackles critical aspects of the practices that facilitate and constrain political participation. The thesis extends our understanding of youth inclusion in decision-making by illuminating complex challenges inherent in the practice of inviting adolescents to participatory democracy meetings. By tackling these issues, this thesis also contributes theoretically and analytically to central notions within social deontics and research on joint decision-making and points out crucial future directions for research on inclusion and political action.

  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this thesis is the communicative practice of strategic storytelling. The aim of the study is to analyse how storytelling is used and handled by organizations to reach comprehensive organizational goals. Within the all-embracing cultural context of modern Western society, here discussed through the concept of the new economy, strategic storytelling is explored in four areas: organizational discourses of strategic storytelling, narrativity as a resource to create and express values connected to the organization, storytelling as a practice of recontextualization and storytelling as an interactive tool. The data consists mainly of strategic stories but also of interviews, observations and documents collected from four Swedish organizations: two companies, a municipality and a congregation of the Church of Sweden. Applying a narratological, social semiotic and dialogical perspective the study investigates how narrativity is used by organizations as a resource to create identification and relations with and among stakeholders. The analyses in the study indicate that meaning is created in different layers. The structural resources of stories are used in various combinations to make organizations appear in specific ways in different situations. Furthermore, the picture of the organization is shaped not only by the stories themselves but also by the very fact that the organization is using storytelling. The potential of recontextualization that is characteristic of narratives is shown to be essential in offering possibilities of identification and a sense of community through storytelling. Furthermore, the fact that a story is told by an individual is shown to play a crucial role in creating a personalized picture of the organization. In strategic storytelling the interpersonal function seems to dominate over the ideational. This is a major finding of the analysis. More specifically, ideation is used as a tool to create interpersonal relations. The study also indicates that strategic storytelling comes with different possibilities and complications depending on what kind of organization is using it. Moreover, it is proposed that narrative as a form of communication fits perfectly within the broader cultural context of the new economy, characterized by commercialization, informalization, individualization and management practices founded on the strategic use of values.
