  • The economic significance of business angels – towards comparable indicators
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Research on Business Angels. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781783471713 - 9781783471720 ; , s. 53-75
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the chapter the authors revisit one of the original topics in business angel research: to measure the scope of the business angel market and evaluate its impact on the economy, especially the financial contributions of business angels at the macro (market) level. This is an issue that has considerable policy relevance. Most policy initiatives to support business angel activities have been introduced without any strong empirical justification nor evidence to inform on the appropriateness of different types of policy measures. In this chapter, the authors summarize our knowledge about the size of the business angel market in different countries. The authors then turn their attention from the size of the market to its ‘significance’; in other words, shifting from a concern with measuring the size of the market to a concern with the relative importance of business angels for funding new and growing ventures in the economy. The authors propose two sets of indicators to evaluate the significance of the business angel market – one that focuses on the supply perspective, that is, the relative importance of business angel finance compared to other sources, and the other that focuses on the demand perspective, that is, the extent to which business angel finance is available in relation to the demand for capital in the small and medium-sized entrepreneur sector.

  • The rigour-relevance debate : strategies to avoid creating an ivory tower in entrepreneurship research1
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Rigour and Relevance in Entrepreneurship Research, Resources and Outcomes Frontiers in European Entrepreneurship Research. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781789903973 - 9781789903980 ; , s. 18-28
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally entrepreneurship and small business research has been regarded as a practical and relevant research field, providing knowledge to be used to solve various societal problems. As the field is becoming more and more institutionalized in the academic system, scientific rigour in research has been emphasized at the expense of relevance. In the chapter the authors strives to show that producing research with practical relevance does not conflict with the production of scientifically rigorous research. On the contrary, it is important that the implications formulated for external stakeholders are well rooted in rigorous scientific research.

  • Institutional theory and contracting in venture capital : the Swedish experience
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Venture Capital. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1369-1066 .- 1464-5343. ; 6:1, s. 47-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper tests the tenets of institutional theory by means of an empirical study of the contractual strategies applied in the Swedish venture capital industry. Venture capitalists differ in, for example, their preferences for early or later stage investments. Some have more experience than others and some are employed by public funds while others work in non-public funds. The sector, however, was expected to be relatively homogeneous due to the small size of the industry and the cultural milieu in which it is located. This homogeneity was tested regarding the use of contractual strategies among venture capitalists in Sweden. Seventy-nine separate contractual covenants were examined in relation to distinctive sector variables, structure, experience and investment preferences. The results indicate that the greatest differences in contractual strategies occur among those with differing investment preferences. There appear to be two distinct venture capital cultures controlling contractual choices in these groups. The public and the non-public sector have limited variations in their contractual choices, although public funds employ slightly more standardized strategies. Little difference was found between the contractual choices made by experienced and inexperienced venture capitalists. The findings generally conform to the outcomes predicted by institutional theory.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: De Gruyter Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance. - : De Gruyter. - 2748-016X .- 2748-0178. - 9783110726756 - 9783110726312 ; , s. 223-244
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both access to and use of external sources of finance by entrepreneurial ventures have transformed significantly over the past 10-15 years, which may have induced an important shift in the role of business angels (BAs). In this chapter we elaborate on this changing role of BAs, and in particular on the value creation provided by BAs in the new financial landscape. We propose to reframe the discussion on the value creation of BAs to better capture their current and potential contribution to the economy and society, and distinguish between three aspects of value creation of BAs - business, that is their financial and non-financial contribution to the firms that they invest in; situational, that is, their role at critical points of economic and societal development, and system, that is, their role in strengthening regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. Further, we suggest a number of areas that we believe to be particularly fruitful over the coming years for deepening our knowledge about the role of BAs in the new financial landscape.

  • What do we mean when we talk about business angels? Some reflections on definitions and sampling
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Venture Capital. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1066 .- 1464-5343. ; 10:4, s. 371-394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early research on business angels recognized a couple of methodological obstacles that significantly have hindered knowledge accumulation about the phenomenon. In this article we will reflect upon these methodological obstacles with focus on definitional issues and sampling techniques. The purpose is to provide a framework that systemizes and inter-relates the variety of definitions within the field as well as to critically review the sampling techniques currently applied in the research field. We maintain that researchers need to make conscious definitional choices when conducting studies of informal investors and business angels, and argue that changing the unit of analysis from investor level to deal level can help to avoid definitional inconsistencies. Further, we suggest two alternative ways of creating high quality samples of business angels and informal investors – the random sample approach and the multi-sample approach. Both procedures reduce the sample bias and allow for longitudinal analysis which is argued to be essential in future research.

  • Kreativitet och nyföretagande
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Entreprenörskap och företagsetablering. - 9789144021478 ; , s. 101-130
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kreativitet behandlas ur kognitiv-psykologisk synvinkel.

  • Who receives bank loans? A study of lending officers' assessments of loans to growing small and medium-sized enterprises
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores factors that influence lending officers' assessments of credit requests from growing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Building on asymmetric information theory, factors identified in previous research are grouped into the theoretical categories of risk-assessment, risk-alignment, and risk-shifting. Hypotheses are developed as to what influences lending officers' credit assessments. In addition, it is hypothesized that risk-taking proclivity interacts with other variables. A conjoint experiment involving 114 lending officers is used to test the hypotheses, which are, by and large, supported by the data.Furthermore, the study investigates how individual differences in experience among lending officers affect the credit assessments, e.g., more experienced lending officers use more sophisticated decision policies involving interactions. When the results from the experiments were compared with the lending officers' self-perceived assessments, it was discovered that lending officers have limited insight into their own credit assessments. The findings of this study have implications for SMEs, lending officers, and lending organizations. The results can assist SMEs to better tailor loan applications. Banks can use the results to make comparisons with their existing credit guidelines, which could assist them in improving their decision-making.The three theoretical categories identified provide a foundation for future research on bank lending to SMEs. The developed model can facilitate empirical research on bank lending under asymmetric information by providing a structure and categorizing previous research into relevant categories.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 30:3, s. 375-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurship research has been built upon a historical foundation grounded in economic change. To understand the development of the field, it is useful to understand the motivations and interests of key scholars and to trace the linkages between these scholars and other authors, from the transient to the contributor. This has been done through a bibliometric analysis of research articles cited between 1982 and 2004. Entrepreneurship has developed from a subdiscipline of management studies reliant on alien terms and cognitive methods toward a separate field with increasing complexities of its own. While not fully mature, entrepreneurship shows all the signs of a maturing field from its increasingly internal orientation and the establishment of key areas of research through to an enhanced, discipline-specific, theoretical approach with a professional language of its own.

  • Exploring the emerging knowledge base of 'the knowledge society'
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-7333. ; 41:7, s. 1121-1131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Science, technology and innovation have grown in importance over the last 50 years as we have moved towards a more knowledge-intensive society (the 'knowledge society'). A number of new research fields have emerged in an effort to understand these developments and to offer advice to decision-makers in government, industry and elsewhere. This special issue focuses on studies of three relatively distinct though thematically related research fields (innovation studies, entrepreneurship studies, and science and technology studies). The first three articles use a particular methodology based on analysis of the references cited in the chapters to authoritative 'handbooks' to identify the core contributions in the three fields. A fourth article examines the relationship between the core literatures in three fields and how this has evolved over time. Other articles look at the evolution of innovation studies as reflected in highly cited papers, at the development of entrepreneurship as seen by a key 'insider', and at the creation of new centres in these fields and the difficulties they face. The last article in this special issue shows how interdisciplinary centres in innovation studies suffer from research assessment systems that are intrinsically biased against interdisciplinary research. This introduction presents a synthesis of the articles in this special issue, discusses similarities and differences between the three fields and their development over time, and considers challenges for policy and governance arising from the research presented here. • 2016
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 28:7-8, s. 477-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we briefly identify three main challenges/issues that should be taken into consideration in the institutionalization of entrepreneurship research: (1) recognizing the complexity of the phenomenon under study; (2) producing interesting, relevant and useful research results for all stakeholders; and (3) developing a critical posture in research. Following the discussion of these challenges/issues we introduce the five contributions to the Special Issue that, in different ways, problematize and challenge mainstream research and approaches. These articles use ‘dissensus discourses’, apply critical, ideological and paradigmatic stances and in some cases underline the importance of contextual factors.

  • What makes entrepreneurship research interesting? Reflections on strategies to overcome the rigour-relevance gap
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 28:1-2, s. 51-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As entrepreneurship researchers compete to have their work published and universities strive to attract the best entrepreneurship scholars, it is appropriate to examine what makes entrepreneurship research interesting. Interesting studies are usually defined as well-crafted and well-written studies that challenge established knowledge, and produce new theories and findings. This paper examines entrepreneurship scholars' views on the characteristics of interesting entrepreneurship research by means of a qualitative approach. Eight focus group interviews comprising junior and senior entrepreneurship scholars were conducted. A core finding is that interesting studies must be relevant to practice. However, the institutionalization of entrepreneurship as an academic field has favoured rigour at the cost of relevance, leading to scholars' frustration with the rigour-relevance gap. In this paper, we analyse various dimensions of interestingness and reflect on strategies for overcoming the rigour-relevance gap, with particular focus on the creation of applicative knowledge.

  • Entrepreneurship education as a scholarly field of research : A systematic review of scientific articles 1980-2017
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conduct a systematic literature review of research on entrepreneurship education published in the period 1980-2017 to examine how entrepreneurship education research has developed as a scholarly field since the 1980s. Our search enables us to synthesize and analyse 334 articles published in 62 peer-reviewed academic journals. Two major observations emerge. First, entrepreneurship journals are over time playing a decreasing role as primary outlets for communicating and disseminating entrepreneurship education research. Second, entrepreneurship education research has over the past decades continued to be an interesting and highly relevant topic. However, the migration of entrepreneurship education research from “mainstream” entrepreneurship conferences and journals, combined with its closeness to (educational) practice, seems to have produced a practice-oriented research agenda largely guided by empirical descriptions, thus compromising some of its academic legitimacy.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: A Research Agenda for Entrepreneurship Education. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781786432902 - 9781786432919 ; , s. 105-126
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of entrepreneurship education has played an important role in building up an academic infrastructure for entrepreneurship research. In this chapter we identify exemplary European contributions to entrepreneurship education research and practice. We discuss the evolution of entrepreneurship education as a scholarly field in Europe with particular emphasis on its social infrastructure and cognitive development. Thereafter we use a systematic literature review to identify important contributions made by European-based scholars to entrepreneurship education research published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Based on the review we identify top research journals with the most published articles on entrepreneurship education, the most cited articles, and the most influential scholars. We end the chapter with a description of the European Entrepreneurship Education Award (EEEA) together with summary analyses of the work of the six Award Laureates.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Contemporary entrepreneurial education (EE) has global reach and impact, with a growing number of entrepreneurship courses, specializations, and degrees in all parts of the world. There is no longer a question of the significance and demand for EE in the higher education system. At the same time, the interest in scientific knowledge and proven experience of “what works” has accelerated, resulting in a rapid growth in the number of scholars and research-based publications conversing vividly about the field. This chapter elaborates on the historical evolution of EE as a scholarly field. First, an overview of important milestones and major events that shaped the field is provided. Second, by focusing on the development over the last three decades, the authors present an overview of the advances that have occurred within the field in terms of practice, social, and research-based aspects. The historical review shows how EE began in, but gradually separated from entrepreneurship as a field, which can be observed in the development of research outlets, meeting places, and teaching practice. Consequently, this historical review can serve as a point of departure for showing how the field has emerged and how knowledge has been developed and accumulated over time. The authors believe that this review can be helpful for scholars, particularly new entrants such as PhD students and other scholars entering the EE field, to learn from and contextualize their own research-based historical insight.
