  • Design of Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems with Strongly Coupled Nature
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering. ; 20:1, s. 91-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today's manufacturing environment forces manufacturing companies to make as many product variations as possible at affordable costs within a short time. Mass customisation is one of most important technologies for companies to achieve their objectives. Efforts to mass customisation should be made on two aspects: (1) To modularize products and make them as less differences as possible; (2) To design manufacturing resources and make them provide as many processes variations as possible. This paper reports our recent work on aspect (2), i.e. how to design a reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) so that it can be competent to accomplish various processes optimally; Reconfigurable robot system (RRS) is taken as an example. RMS design involves architecture design and configuration design, and configuration design is further divided in design analysis and design synthesis. Axiomatic design theory (ADT) is applied to architecture design, the features and issues of RRS configuration design are discussed, automatic modelling method is developed for design analysis, and concurrent design methodology is presented for design synthesis.

  • Improved Control and Simulation Models of a Tricycle Collaborative Robot
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing. - : Springer. - 0956-5515 .- 1572-8145. ; 19:6, s. 715-722
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of collaborative manufacturing is to create the synergism from the collaboration of manufacturing resources. Most of the studied collaborations are made among intelligent machines; however, the collaboration can be realized even between machines and human being, and a collaborative robot (Cobot) belongs to the latter. A cobot is a robot designed to assist human beings as a guide or assistor in a constrained motion. Various prototypes have been developed and the potentials of these robots have been demonstrated. The research presented in this paper focuses on the control and simulation models of a tricycle cobot with three steered wheels, with the following two contributions: (i) A concise model for the closed-loop control is developed. Existing closed-loop control has been implemented in an intuitive way, and some control parameters have to be determined by a trial-and-error method. (ii) A simulation model is proposed to validate the control algorithms. No simulation model is available and the control models of other existing systems have to be validated experimentally. The developed control and simulation models have been implemented. Graphic simulation is also developed. Case studies are provided and the simulation results are analyzed.

  • Reference Architecture for Internet Based Intelligent Shop Floors
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE Conference on Network Intelligence. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. ; , s. 63-72
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global competitiveness is causing manufacturing companies to change the way they do business. New ways of viewing markets and competition have led the movement from legacy information systems to Internet-based environments. Success in manufacturing depends on being able to respond quickly, accurately and consistently to the changing needs of the marketplace. The need to control and optimize processes and to vary the necessary parameters to obtain the best product on time and on specification has fostered a change from centralized or hierarchical to distributed manufacturing control systems. This paper proposes a reference architecture for Internet-based intelligent shop floors. Internet, Web technologies, and intelligent agents are the key technologies adopted in this approach. The reference architecture provides the framework for components of a complex control system to work together as a whole rather than as a disjoint set. It encompasses both information architecture and integration methodologies. The primary aspects of the reference architecture under consideration include: (1) statement of scope and purpose; (2) domain analysis; (3) architectural specification; and (4) methodology for architectural development and system design.

  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Agile Manufacturing. - 1536-2639. ; 8:1, s. 27-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the past decade, the Internet, Web and intelligent agents have been used in attempts to implement distributed intelligent manufacturing systems. Network communication and message services are important aspects for such systems. This paper first introduces a new concept called iShopFloor-an intelligent shop floor based on the Internet, Web and agent technologies. The paper then reports some of our recent work on the implementation of XML-based message services for Internet-enabled, agent-based, intelligent shop floors. The objective is to investigate XML for message exchanges among Internet-enabled shop floor devices that are represented by intelligent agents. The paper discusses the advantages of using XML for message services and presents our initial implementation within the iShopFloor prototype environment. This implementation has demonstrated the following advantages of using XML-based message services on the shop floor: (1) simplification and standardization of message services in Internet-based, intelligent shop floors; (2) facilitation of the integration of an agent-based scheduling system with other intelligent shop floor systems, including Web-based shop floor monitoring and control systems; and (3) possibility of creating data views on the fly.

  • A Sensor-Driven Approach to Distributed Shop Floor Planning and Control
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dynamic Systems and Control Division (Publication) DSC. ; , s. 1175-1182
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this research is to develop methodology and framework for distributed shop floor planning, real-time monitoring, and remote device control supported by intelligent sensors. An intelligent sensor serves runtime data from bottom up to facilitate high-level decision-making. It assures that correct decisions are made in a timely manner, if compared with the best estimations of engineers. Being an adaptive system, a so-designed framework will improve the flexibility and dynamism of shop floor operations, and provide a seamless integration among process planning, resource scheduling, job execution, process monitoring, and device control. This paper presents principles of the methodology, details in architecture design, module interactions, information flow, and a proof-of-concept prototype implementation.

  • A Web-based Collaborative Workspace Using Java 3D
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: The Sixth International Conference on, 2001 Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Design. - : IEEE. - 0660184931 ; , s. 77-82
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents a framework for building Web-based collaborative workspaces using the latest Java technologies-Java 3D, JavaServer Page (JSP), and Java Servlet. This Web-based approach allows designers, engineers and production managers to share a common workspace that can be used for design review, production monitoring, remote control, and troubleshooting, based on a set of interactive Java 3D models that represent the physical world with common interests. Following a brief overview of the related research work, the paper discusses the Java 3D concept from its scene graph structure to behavior control, and explains our approach to building Web-based collaborative workspaces using Java 3D. The proposed framework uses the popular client-server architecture and view-control-model design pattern with a secured session control. Control logic and the interfaces, which interact with the real world, are handled by an application server through servlets. The benefits enabled by the framework include reduced network traffic, increased flexibility of remote monitoring, interactive control, Web-based synchronous collaboration and quick response. It also shows significant potential for various Web-based real-time and distributed applications.

  • Function-Block Enabled Job Shop Planning and Control with Uncertainty
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this research is to develop a methodology of distributed process planning and its execution control for job shop operations. The manufacturing processes of job shop operations are rather complex, especially at shop floors where highly mixed products in small batch sizes are handled simultaneously. In addition to the fluctuating job shop operations, unpredictable events like job delay, urgent job insertion, fixture shortage, missing tool, and even machine break-down, are regularly challenging the job shop operations. Targeting the fluctuations, this research proposes a DPP (distributed process planning) approach to generate process plans that are responsive and adaptive to the changes. In this paper, a function block enabled approach is introduced. It is expected that the new approach can largely enhance the dynamism of fluctuating job shop operations.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering. - : ASME Press. - 1530-9827 .- 1944-7078. ; 4:1, s. 56-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Targeting the remote monitoring and control of shop floors, this paper proposes a new framework called Wise-ShopFloor (W¯ebbasedi¯ntegrateds¯ensor-drivene-ShopFloor¯) that can be applied to distributed manufacturing environments. It utilizes the latest Java technologies (Java 3D and Java Servlet) for system implementation. This Web-based framework allows users to monitor and control a distant shop floor device with visual helps enabled by Java 3D models instead of camera images. The behavior of a 3D model is driven by sensor signals of its physical counterpart. A prototype system is developed to demonstrate its application on shop floor monitoring and control.

  • A Security Framework for Collaborative Distributed System Control at the Device-Level
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: INDIN 2003. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0780382005 ; , s. 192-198
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today's globalized business world, outsourcing, joint ventures, and cross-border collaborations have led to work environments that are geographically distributed across organizational and national boundaries. There are critical research needs to develop highly secured collaborative work environments and security solutions for deployment, configuration, monitoring, and device control of interoperating services. We present a well-shaped security framework for distributed system control with a focus on device-level system control, monitoring and services reconfiguration in open and dynamic environments. The characteristics of portability, reconfigurability, interoperability, and interchangeability of these new environments are considered as key factors to produce new security risks and challenges. By adopting public key cryptography, software agent and XML binding technologies, the major security problems of authenticity, integrity, confidentiality, and safe execution are addressed in this framework. The core modules for secure task delivery and execution are presented in detail.

  • Distributed Device Networks With Security Constraints
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1551-3203 .- 1941-0050. ; 1:4, s. 217-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today's globalized business world, outsourcing, joint ventures, mobile and cross-border collaborations have led to work environments distributed across multiple organizational and geographical boundaries. The new requirements of portability, configurability and interoperability of distributed device networks put forward new challenges and security risks to the system's design and implementation. There are critical demands on highly secured collaborative control environments and security enhancing mechanisms for distributed device control, configuration, monitoring, and interoperation. This paper addresses the collaborative control issues of distributed device networks under open and dynamic environments. The security challenges of authenticity, integrity, confidentiality, and execution safety are considered as primary design constraints. By adopting policy-based network security technologies and XML processing technologies, two new modules of Secure Device Control Gateway and Security Agent are introduced into regular distributed device control networks to provide security and safety enhancing mechanisms. The core architectures, applied mechanisms, and implementation considerations are presented in detail in this paper.

  • An Integrated Virtual Validation System for Parallel Kinematic Machine Analysis and Design
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference. ; , s. 1149-1158
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Selecting a configuration for a machine tool that will best suit the needs of a forecast set of requirements can be a difficulty and costly exercise. This problem can now be addressed using an integrated virtual validation system. The system includes kinematic/dynamic analysis, kinetostatic model, CAD module, FEM module, CAM module, optimization module and visual environment for simulation and collision detection of the machining and deburring. It is an integration of the parallel kinematic machines (PKM) design, analysis, optimization and simulation. In this paper, the integrated virtual system is described in a detail, a prototype of a 3-dof PKM is modeled, analyzed, optimized and remote controlled with the proposed system. Some results and simulations are also given. Its effectiveness is shown with the results obtained by NRC-IMTI during the design of the 3-dof NRC PKM.
