    • Within private as well as public organization there is a strong (but sometimes over-optimistic) belief in the magic of groups and teams. Here all kinds of problems are supposed to be dealt with hoping for the benefits of the collective competence. However, at the end of the day this thought is likely to become contra productive. This is also a substantial financial issue since it is expensive to keep all teachers in meetings and committees. Particularly if these groups are dysfunctional and become an arena for passive resistance or talented pseudo issues. This project focuses how 19 upper secondary schools in Stockholm, Sweden use the time allocated in teacher–union agreements for common purposes. The theoretical frame of reference in this project is inspired by cultural approaches to organization. In our understanding this time is particularly interesting because it is mainly during this time ambitions about school development can be realized.

  • The use of a pilot-scale continuous paper process for fire retardant cellulose-kaolinite nanocomposites
  • 2018
  • In: Composites Science And Technology. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0266-3538 .- 1879-1050. ; 162, s. 215-224
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Nanostructured materials are difficult to prepare rapidly and at large scale. Melt-processed polymer-clay nanocomposites are an exception, but the clay content is typically below 5 wt%. An approach for manufacturing of microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)/kaolinite nanocomposites is here demonstrated in pilot-scale by continuous production of hybrid nanopaper structures with thickness of around 100 μm. The colloidal nature of MFC suspensions disintegrated from chemical wood fiber pulp offers the possibility to add kaolinite clay platelet particles of nanoscale thickness. For initial lab scale optimization purposes, nanocomposite processing (dewatering, small particle retention etc) and characterization (mechanical properties, density etc) were investigated using a sheet former (Rapid Köthen). This was followed by a continuous fabrication of composite paper structures using a pilot-scale web former. Nanocomposite morphology was assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties were measured in uniaxial tension. The fire retardancy was evaluated by cone calorimetry. Inorganic hybrid composites with high content of in-plane oriented nanocellulose, nanoclay and wood fibers were successfully produced at pilot scale. Potential applications include fire retardant paperboard for semi structural applications and as reinforcement mats in molded thermoset biocomposites.

  • 2013
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Between the Promise of Specificity and the Demand for Evidence – A study of knowledge and the approach to knowledge in socially oriented non-profit, private and public sector organizationsIn the social work field it is possible to identify two parallel processes in time. On the one hand a qualitative developmental process―even towards a form of standardization―where central concepts are academisation, professionalization, scientifically produced knowledge, expertise and evidence based methods. Simultaneously, there is a drive to create the conditions for increased diversity, where hopes are especially being pinned on the non-profit sector. In spite of representations and expectations concerning the non-profit sector and its so-called specificity, however, much of existing research lacks a comparative perspective, i.e., studies where non-profit organizations are related to comparable activities in the private and public sector. The aim of the study―with special focus on issues concerning evidence based knowledge in social work―is to compare and analyse whether and in that case how employee conceptions differ between the sectors, and whether and in what way non-profit employees and their activities can be said to fulfil the expectations of contributing to increased diversity. Data is from a questionnaire directed to about 1300 social work employees. The results show a greater interest in research and more marked efforts at professionalization in the public sector, while above all in the non-profit sector there was skepticism about science paired with reservations about work carried out in a professional way. In the non-profit, but also in the private sector, issues of ethics, views of humanity and values were paid greater attention. Also stressed here was the importance of creating relationships, the unique human encounter, genuine commitment, and human kindness. However, there was significant uniformity across all sectors in the use of methods, where three dominated: solution focused measures, network support/therapy, and psychosocial work.

  • 2010
  • In: Journal of Civil Society. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1744-8689 .- 1744-8697. ; 6:2, s. 95-98
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article introduces the special issue of the Journal of Civil Society on 'volunteering and social activism'. We think research and the scholarly debate on civil society for too long have ignored important research questions that start at the crossroads of the ideal types of the 'altruistic volunteer' and the 'political activist'. Behind the idea of pulling together a special issue was an ambition to open up an avenue for research and dialogue between two research traditions that, in our opinion, have had too little inspiring effect on each other. The special issue includes four articles that all raise important challenges to the impression of volunteering and social activism as separate and disconnected forms of civic engagement.

  • The development of a GPR44 targeting radioligand [11C]AZ12204657 for in vivo assessment of beta cell mass.
  • 2018
  • In: EJNMMI Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2191-219X. ; 8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The G-protein-coupled receptor 44 (GPR44) is a beta cell-restricted target that may serve as a marker for beta cell mass (BCM) given the development of a suitable PET ligand.METHODS: The binding characteristics of the selected candidate, AZ12204657, at human GPR44 were determined using in vitro ligand binding assays. AZ12204657 was radiolabeled using 11C- or 3H-labeled methyl iodide ([11C/3H]CH3I) in one step, and the conversion of [11C/3H]CH3I to the radiolabeled product [11C/3H]AZ12204657 was quantitative. The specificity of radioligand binding to GPR44 and the selectivity for beta cells were evaluated by in vitro binding studies on pancreatic sections from human and non-human primates as well as on homogenates from endocrine and exocrine pancreatic compartments.RESULTS: The radiochemical purity of the resulting radioligand [11C]AZ12204657 was > 98%, with high molar activity (MA), 1351 ± 575 GBq/μmol (n = 18). The radiochemical purity of [3H]AZ12204657 was > 99% with MA of 2 GBq/μmol. Pancreatic binding of [11C/3H]AZ12204657 was co-localized with insulin-positive islets of Langerhans in non-diabetic individuals and individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The binding of [11C]AZ12204657 to GPR44 was > 10 times higher in islet homogenates compared to exocrine homogenates. In human islets of Langerhans GPR44 was co-expressed with insulin, but not glucagon as assessed by co-staining and confocal microscopy.CONCLUSION: We radiolabeled [11C]AZ12204657, a potential PET radioligand for the beta cell-restricted protein GPR44. In vitro evaluation demonstrated that [3H]AZ12204657 and [11C]AZ12204657 selectively target pancreatic beta cells. [11C]AZ12204657 has promising properties as a marker for human BCM.

  • Specific Uptake of an Amyloid-beta Protofibril-Binding Antibody-Tracer in A beta PP Transgenic Mouse Brain
  • 2013
  • In: Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. - 1387-2877 .- 1875-8908. ; 37:1, s. 29-40
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Evidence suggests that amyloid-beta (A beta) protofibrils/oligomers are pathogenic agents in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Unfortunately, techniques enabling quantitative estimates of these species in patients or patient samples are still rather limited. Here we describe the in vitro and ex vivo characteristics of a new antibody-based radioactive ligand, [I-125]mAb158, which binds to A beta protofibrils with high affinity. [I-125]mAb158 was specifically taken up in brain of transgenic mice expressing amyloid-beta protein precursor (A beta PP) as shown ex vivo. This was in contrast to [I-125]mAb-Ly128 which does not bind to A beta. The uptake of intraperitoneally-administered [I-125]mAb158 into the brain was age- and time-dependent, and saturable in A beta PP transgenic mice with modest A beta deposition. Brain uptake was also found in young A beta PP transgenic mice that were devoid of A beta deposits, suggesting that [I-125]mAb158 targets soluble A beta protofibrils. The radioligand was diffusely located in the parenchyma, sometimes around senile plaques and only occasionally colocalized with cerebral amyloid angiopathy. A refined iodine-124-labeled version of mAb158 with much improved blood-brain barrier passage and a shorter plasma half-life might be useful for PET imaging of A beta protofibrils.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter has two themes: (1) the scope of formal and informal volunteering and of nonprofit, voluntary, membership associations (MAs) in the world, by which we mean the quantitative magnitudes of these phenomena at or near the present time, and (2) the long-term and recent (past few decades) trends in these magnitudes. Global data are used, when available, but we also report data for world regions and for specific nations when feasible. Besides such data, we also report on estimated magnitudes of association wealth and income, the economic value of volunteering, internal structures and processes of associations, participation rates in associations, and issues regarding computer mapping of data such as that presented in this chapter. Usable knowledge, future trends, and needed research are discussed.

  • Den svala svenska tilliten : Förutsättningar och utmaningar
  • 2013
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2016. - 2
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2005
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation examines the relationship between knowledge, practice and policy within a specific area of social work, namely, social intervention to ameliorate the problem of homelessness. In the thesis, the ambition shown in recent years to lay the ground for an evidence-based practice in social work is discussed as an expression of late modern attempts to deal with the contradictory character of scientific knowledge. The work is composed of four separate studies along with an introduction. The first study considers the present state of knowledge concerning those groups readily described as “the most vulnerable” in that they often have a diffi¬cult complex of problems. The social conditions of these groups can only be examined to a limited extent with the help of traditional methods, however, so that our knowledge of their situation is poor. The group of the homeless seems largely to have remained unchanged during the most recent decade; but results of various studies suggest that the vul¬nerability of the group has increased, which is to say that even if the group has not increased in size, their social situa¬tion has definitely become worse. In the second study, a more in-depth discussion is advanced of methods and definitions concerning the charting of groups with a weak position in the housing market. Starting from a review of the various research methods presently in use, a model is sketched for future investigations that might more adequately provide the evidence-based information for making informed decisions. The third and fourth studies deal above all with the effectiveness of social interventions being made to come to grips with homelessness; how these strategies have evolved and the role of knowledge in them. The goal of the third study has therefore been to describe how knowledge and social work practice have developed respectively, and above all, to shed some light on their relationship. A review of social work journals dated 1965-2000 shows that only a very few of the relatively small number of articles dealing with homelessness could in any way directly form a basis for the planning and implementation of social interventions. In Stockholm Municipality, also during this period, several special programs were instigated to boost the development of knowledge in the field; but the connections between this accu¬mulation of knowledge and any implementation in actual social interventions remains unclear. The fourth study uses interview material to describe the social work being carried out to combat homelessness in four Swedish local government districts and to discuss any differences between them, where a clear difference did emerge between the larger and the smaller districts. The larger local governments had created special organisations for work with homelessness issues, which had even brought with it the allocation of special resources for the build-up of knowledge; but not even here is it possible to state that any cumulative build-up of knowledge has taken place. An in-depth case study of the discussion carried out in Stockholm Municipality concerning a proposal to create a special knowledge centre suggests that these questions are also deeply influenced by the local political context in which it would be used.In the introductory section of the dissertation, the aim is to relate the four studies to a broader discussion. The vari¬ous strategies being developed for increasing the evidence basis for social work with the homeless are discussed, taking a point of departure in Ulrich Beck’s contention that in spite of contrary intentions, more knowledge tends to involve the risk of added uncertainty. Also treated in this context is how an earlier dominant tradition of knowledge – inspired by social medicine – has come to diminish in importance, while another – more directed towards the results and effects of social interventions – has grown.

  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Microparticles loaded with antigens, proteins, DNA, fungicides, and other functional agents emerge as ideal vehicles for vaccine, drug delivery, genetic therapy, surface- and crop protection. The microscopic size of the particles and their collective large specific surface area enables highly active and localized release of the functional substance. In order to develop designs with release profiles optimized for the specific application, it is desirable to map the distribution of the active substance within the particle and how parameters such as size, material and morphology affect release rates at single particle level. Current imaging techniques are limited in resolution, sensitivity, image acquisition time, or sample treatment, excluding dynamic studies of active agents in microparticles. Here, we demonstrate that the combination of CARS and THG microscopy can successfully be used, by mapping the spatial distribution and release rates of the fungicide and food preservative IPBC from different designs of PMMA microparticles at single-particle level. By fitting a radial diffusion model to the experimental data, single particle diffusion coefficients can be determined. We show that release rates are highly dependent on the size and morphology of the particles. Hence, CARS and THG microscopy provides adequate sensitivity and spatial resolution for quantitative studies on how single-particle properties affect the diffusion of active agents at microscopic level. This will aid the design of innovative microencapsulating systems for controlled release.

  • Engagemangets gestaltningar : Insatser i och utanför civilsamhället
  • 2022
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
Bokens kapitel fogas systematiskt in i teoretiska referensramar.

In Sweden, voluntary work is a widespread social phenomenon and studying what voluntary work means to people enables the study of an important form of citizenship in contemporary society. The aims of the dissertation are to clarify the meaning of voluntary work and study themes in the view on society and the outlook of mankind emerging from the perspective of voluntary work. The study consists of interviews with people who do voluntary work within environmental organizations, sports clubs, and welfare organizations. The interviewees describe voluntary work as being: unpaid, aimed at benefiting others, a free choice, an expression of engagement, and performed in a community. These five themes constitute a departure towards a phenomenological structure of voluntary work. Voluntary work is moreover percieved as a way of gaining an identity, achieving self-realization, and experiencing meaning. These three themes seems to be fundamental functions of voluntary work. When society is described from the perspective of voluntary work, it is perceived as being materialistic and faceless. In contrast, voluntary work seems to offer an arena i a public context for people to act authentically for the good of others. The interview responses are discussed in relation to the individualization in the modern society. There is no support for the notion of antagonism between individualism and voluntary work. More accurately, they describe voluntary work as a way of standing out as an individual in society. The interview subjects consequently portray the civil society as a free zone in which people can express their citizenship. In summary, voluntary work seems to emerge as a way for people to give shape and form to their citizenship and appear as individuals in a public sphere.

    • This dissertation aims to examine and deepen the knowledge of family member caregiving where the care recipient is an elderly person who immigrated late in life. It also aims to contribute to the knowledge of the complexities underlying informal care giving and add to our understandings of what it means to be an immigrant in Sweden. The caregiver is in focus. The research conducted is explorative and partly inductive. The main material used is a qualitative interview study carried out with family members from different countries who are providing informal care to elderly immigrant relatives. The analysis gives three patterns of caregiving. One shows help from informal caregivers only who are not compensated economically. Another shows help from family members who are compensated. The third shows help from family members and staff from the public care system. Three ideal-typical informal caregiver roles show different positions vis-à-vis the new: “guardian”, “filter” and “reinterpreter of traditional care ideals”. Swedish born and immigrated informal caregivers are also compared through analysis of data gathered in telephone interviews with a representative selection of inhabitants in the County of Stockholm.A philosophy of action together with theory on integration and multiculturalism serves as theoretical frameworks to understand discrepancies and ambiguities in the data. Young immigrants experience different integration processes than do the older ones. They strive to protect older family members from changes linked to the migration experience. Talk about dependence on culture underlines family feelings and legitimates the processes of protection. Preconceptions about great differences between Swedish born and immigrant families are not supported by quantitative data. A conclusion is that protection can be understood in relation both to the traditional and the new, the latter in the forms of meetings with Swedish society where unequal relations prevail. It is a kind of counter-strategy where the range of actions is diminished, and thus it has its own logic. Protection can be loosened up when the circumstances change and the range of actions grow.
