  • Heat Angels and Paper Cups: Pupils’ Use of Metaphoric Relations When Engaging Thermal Cameras to Investigate Heat
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Bridging Research and Practice in Science Education. Contributions from Science Education Research, vol 6.. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030172183 - 9783030172190 ; , s. 74-89
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal science is a perennial obstacle for learners. Infrared camera technology provides an opportunity for pupils to confront challenging thermal ideas. From an embodied cognition perspective, sensory experiences form metaphoric relations that underpin conceptualisation and reasoning about abstract scientific phenomena. This study investigated eight groups of fourth grade pupils’ use of metaphoric relations when engaging thermal cameras to explore “heat” at a science centre. Pupils were videorecorded while collaboratively exploring thermal properties of the surroundings and during a thermos modelling exercise. Qualitative metaphor analyses of pupils’ dialogue and behaviour revealed various metaphoric and metonymic relations around spatial properties, colour, movement and change in their conceptualisation of thermal phenomena. “Heat” was almost exclusively conceptualised as a noun, manifested in utterances such as “harder for the heat to escape” and “it wants to get yellow”. In addition, pupils used colour as both a metonym and metaphor for heat and temperature. Expressions of heat as an entity were closely related to experiences of movement, indicating that spatial cognition is central to children’s conceptualisation of heat. Engagement with the cameras provided access to thermodynamic phenomena through unique sensory and nonsensory experiences. Future research will explore how these metaphoric relations can be exploited as a meaning-making resource in the classroom.

  • Metaphor in Mind : Programming Teachers' Knowledge and Beliefs in Action
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Programming has become an integral component of technology education around the world and is an important part of Swedish curriculum reform and classroom teaching. This thesis aims to explore relations between programming teachers' knowledge and beliefs about programming teaching and how it is enacted in their practice. In response, three studies were designed to investigate teachers' knowledge on three analytical levels: metaphorical expression, meaning, and understanding. The research relies heavily on triangulation and draws on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the Refined Consensus Model (RCM) for Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) as an analytical framework. Data consists of metaphorical expressions in four educational texts, three classroom observations and interviews, and eighteen online video clips. Metaphors were analysed by deploying the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP), Metaphor Identification Guidelines for Gesture (MIG-G), and Procedure for Identifying Metaphorical Scenes (PIMS), respectively. Study 1 revealed that programming metaphors (designated in uppercase) can be categorised as being either related to the function (e.g., PROGRAMMING IS BUILDING, or DATA IS A PHYSICAL OBJECT) of the computer, or the intention of the programmer (e.g., "jump between code lines", or "tell the system that..."). In addition to confirming that many of the metaphors in Study 1 are employed in classroom teaching, Study 2 shows the teachers use of metaphor in gestures when teaching programming. For example, a teacher might hold an "object" while speaking about a programming concept, and thereby expose the use of the metaphor A PROGRAMMING CONCEPT IS A PHYSICAL OBJECT. The study also found that the teachers frame their teaching in relation to building, instructing, mentoring, and problem solving. Study 3 explored spatiality of a teacher’s metaphorical expressions. Findings illuminated that the teacher’s utterances rarely display connections between programming concepts and spatiality. Overall, the thesis identifies key metaphors contained in texts, speech, and gestures in the programming classroom. The research also shows how the teachers enact teaching differently, thus implying salient connections between their knowledge, beliefs, and action.

  • BERT based natural language processing for triage of adverse drug reaction reports shows close to human-level performance
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: PLOS Digital Health. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 2767-3170. ; 2:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Post-marketing reports of suspected adverse drug reactions are important for establishing the safety profile of a medicinal product. However, a high influx of reports poses a challenge for regulatory authorities as a delay in identification of previously unknown adverse drug reactions can potentially be harmful to patients. In this study, we use natural language processing (NLP) to predict whether a report is of serious nature based solely on the free-text fields and adverse event terms in the report, potentially allowing reports mislabelled at time of reporting to be detected and prioritized for assessment. We consider four different NLP models at various levels of complexity, bootstrap their train-validation data split to eliminate random effects in the performance estimates and conduct prospective testing to avoid the risk of data leakage. Using a Swedish BERT based language model, continued language pre-training and final classification training, we achieve close to human-level performance in this task. Model architectures based on less complex technical foundation such as bag-of-words approaches and LSTM neural networks trained with random initiation of weights appear to perform less well, likely due to the lack of robustness that a base of general language training provides.

  • Lead aprons and thyroid collars: to be, or not to be?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of radiological protection : official journal of the Society for Radiological Protection. - 1361-6498. ; 43:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wearing lead aprons and thyroid collars for long periods of time has a subjective component: to balance the effective dose reduction with the effort of carrying a heavy load. Occupational radiation exposure has decreased dramatically in the last century within the health care system. During the same period the use of lead aprons and thyroid collars has also gone up. Therefore, a question that may be raised is: how safe is safe enough? In order to promote stakeholder involvement, the aim of the present study was to investigate staff's experience of discomforts associated with wearing lead aprons and thyroid collars for long periods of time, and also to investigate staff's willingness to tolerate personal dose equivalent (expressed as radiation dose) and the corresponding increase in future cancer risk to avoid wearing these protective tools. A questionnaire was developed and given to staff working in operating or angiography rooms at Skaraborg Hospital in Sweden. The results from the 245 respondents showed that 51% experienced bothersome warmth, 36% experienced fatigue and 26% experienced ache or pain that they believed was associated with wearing lead aprons. One third of the respondents would tolerate a personal dose equivalent of 1 mSv per year to avoid wearing lead aprons, but only a fifth would tolerate the corresponding increase in future cancer risk (from 43% to 43.2%). In conclusion, discomforts associated with wearing lead aprons and thyroid collars for long periods of time are common for the staff using them. At the same time, only a minority of the staff would tolerate a small increase in future cancer risk to avoid wearing them. The present study gives an example of stakeholder involvement and points at the difficulties in making reasonable decisions about the use of these protective tools.

  • Constructing the adult learner : a governmentality analysis
  • 2006

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Transplantation. - 1534-6080. ; 105:1, s. 108-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients may be more vulnerable to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Data on the clinical course of COVID-19 in immunosuppressed patients are limited, and the optimal management strategy for these patients is yet unclear. We present 53 SOT recipients (31 kidney transplant recipients, 8 liver transplant recipients, 5 heart transplant recipients, 5 lung transplant recipients, 3 liver-kidney transplant recipients, and 1 kidney-after-heart transplant recipient), transplanted at a Swedish high-volume transplant center and each diagnosed with COVID-19 between February 21, 2020 and June 22, 2020. Demographic, clinical, and treatment data were extracted from the electronic patient files.Patients reported fever (61%), cough (43%), diarrhea (31%), and upper respiratory symptoms (29%). The median age was 56 years, and 57% were male. According to severity, 55% had mild, 13% had moderate, 19% had severe, and 13% had critical disease. Thirty-seven patients (70%) were hospitalized, with 8 requiring intensive care. Thirteen of the 37 patients were initially managed as outpatients but later hospitalized. One patient received hydroxychloroquine, and no patients received antivirals. Antimetabolites and calcineurin inhibitors were held or reduced in two-thirds. Twenty-seven of 37 hospitalized patients (73%) received low-molecular-weight heparin. Five (13.5%) hospitalized patients died. Overall survival for the entire cohort was 90.5%. No rejection episodes were noted.Hospitalization, lowering of immunosuppression, and prophylactic anticoagulation were the most common therapeutic interventions for SOT recipients with COVID-19. A significant proportion of patients could be managed on an outpatient basis, while keeping a low threshold for admission. Mild and moderate disease forms seem to have a good outcome.

  • Person-centred care after acute coronary syndrome, from hospital to primary care - A randomised controlled trial
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5273. ; 187, s. 693-699
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To evaluate if person-centred care can improve self-efficacy and facilitate return to work or prior activity level in patients after an event of acute coronary syndrome. METHOD: 199 patients with acute coronary syndrome <75years were randomly assigned to person-centred care intervention or treatment as usual and followed for 6months. In the intervention group a person-centred care process was added to treatment as usual, emphasising the patient as a partner in care. Care was co-created in collaboration between patients, physicians, registered nurses and other health care professionals and documented in a health plan. A team-based partnership across three health care levels included transparent knowledge about the disease and medical state to achieve agreed goals during recovery. Main outcome measure was a composite score of changes in general self-efficacy >/=5units, return to work or prior activity level and re-hospitalisation or death. RESULTS: The composite score showed that more patients (22.3%, n=21) improved in the intervention group at 6months compared to the control group (9.5%, n=10) (odds ratio, 2.7; 95% confidence interval: 1.2-6.2; P=0.015). The effect was driven by improved self-efficacy >/=5units in the intervention group. Overall general self-efficacy improved significantly more in the intervention group compared with the control group (P=0.026). There was no difference between groups on re-hospitalisation or death, return to work or prior activity level. CONCLUSION: A person-centred care approach emphasising the partnership between patients and health care professionals throughout the care chain improves general self-efficacy without causing worsening clinical events.

  • Alterations in the Serum Proteome Following Electroconvulsive Therapy for a Major Depressive Episode: A Longitudinal Multicenter Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Biological Psychiatry: Global Open Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 2667-1743. ; 3:4, s. 884-892
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for severe depression, but the biological changes induced by ECT remain poorly understood.METHODS: This study investigated alterations in blood serum proteins in 309 patients receiving ECT for a major depressive episode. We analyzed 201 proteins in samples collected at 3 time points (T): just before the first ECT treatment session (T0), within 30 minutes after the first ECT session (T1), and just before the sixth ECT session (T2).RESULTS: Using statistical models to account for repeated sampling, we identified 152 and 70 significantly (,5% false discovery rate) altered proteins at T1 and T2, respectively. The most pronounced alterations at T1 were tran-siently increased levels of prolactin, myoglobin, and kallikrein-6. However, most proteins had decreased levels at T1, with the largest effects observed for pro-epidermal growth factor, proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase Src, tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 14, sulfotransferase 1A1, early activation antigen CD69, and CD40 ligand. The change of several acutely altered proteins correlated with electric current and pulse frequency in a dose-response-like manner. Over a 5-session course of ECT, some acutely altered levels were sustained while others increased, e.g., serine protease 8 and chitinase-3-like protein 1. None of the studied protein biomarkers were associated with clinical response to ECT.CONCLUSIONS: We report experimental data on alterations in the circulating proteome triggered by ECT in a clinical setting. The findings implicate hormonal signaling, immune response, apoptotic processes, and more. None of the findings were associated with clinical response to ECT.

  • 2021

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of machine learning to accelerate computer simulations is on the rise. In atomistic simulations, the use of machine learning interatomic potentials (ML-IAPs) can significantly reduce computational costs while maintaining accuracy close to that of ab initio methods. To achieve this, ML-IAPs are trained on large datasets of images, which are atomistic configurations labeled with data from ab initio calculations. Focusing on carbon, we use deep learning to train neural network potentials (NNPs), a form of ML-IAP, based on the state-of-the-art end-to-end NNP architecture SchNet and investigate how the choice of training and validation data affects the performance of the NNPs. Training is performed on the CA-9 dataset, a 9-carbon allotrope dataset constructed using data obtained via ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). Our results show that image generation with AIMD causes a high degree of similarity between the generated images, which has a detrimental effect on the performance of the NNPs. But by carefully choosing which images from the dataset are included in the training and validation data, this effect can be mitigated. We conclude by benchmarking our trained NNPs in applications such as relaxation and phonon calculation, where we can reproduce ab initio results with high accuracy.

    • Molecular networks in neurological diseases are complex. Despite this fact, contemporary biomarkers are in most cases interpreted in isolation, leading to a significant loss of information and power. We present an analytical approach to scrutinize and combine information from biomarkers originating from multiple sources with the aim of discovering a condensed set of biomarkers that in combination could distinguish the progressive degenerative phenotype of multiple sclerosis (SPMS) from the relapsing-remitting phenotype (RRMS). Methods: Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were integrated with data from protein and metabolite measurements of cerebrospinal fluid, and a method was developed to sift through all the variables to establish a small set of highly informative measurements. This prospective study included 16 SPMS patients, 30 RRMS patients and 10 controls. Protein concentrations were quantitated with multiplexed fluorescent bead-based immunoassays and ELISA. The metabolome was recorded using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Clinical follow-up data of the SPMS patients were used to assess disease progression and development of disability. Results: Eleven variables were in combination able to distinguish SPMS from RRMS patients with high confidence superior to any single measurement. The identified variables consisted of three MRI variables: the size of the spinal cord and the third ventricle and the total number of T1 hypointense lesions; six proteins: galectin-9, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), soluble CD40L (sCD40L) and platelet-derived growth factor AA (PDGF-AA); and two metabolites: 20 beta-dihydrocortisol (20 beta-DHF) and indolepyruvate. The proteins myelin basic protein (MBP) and macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), as well as the metabolites 20 beta-DHF and 5,6-dihydroxyprostaglandin F1a (5,6-DH-PGF1), were identified as potential biomarkers of disability progression. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates, in a limited but well-defined and data-rich cohort, the importance and value of combining multiple biomarkers to aid diagnostics and track disease progression.

  • Synthesis route attribution of sulfur mustard by multivariate data analysis of chemical signatures
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Talanta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-9140 .- 1873-3573. ; 186, s. 615-621
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multivariate model was developed to attribute samples to a synthetic method used in the production of sulfur mustard (HD). Eleven synthetic methods were used to produce 66 samples for model construction. Three chemists working in both participating laboratories took part in the production, with the aim to introduce variability while reducing the influence of laboratory or chemist specific impurities in multivariate analysis. A gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric data set of peak areas for 103 compounds was subjected to orthogonal partial least squares - discriminant analysis to extract chemical attribution signature profiles and to construct multivariate models for classification of samples. For one- and two-step routes, model quality allowed the classification of an external test set (16/16 samples) according to synthesis conditions in the reaction yielding sulfur mustard. Classification of samples according to first-step methodology was considerably more difficult, given the high purity and uniform quality of the intermediate thiodiglycol produced in the study. Model performance in classification of aged samples was also investigated.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluate whether NMR-based metabolomics is a suitable method to generate an integrated view on metabolic processes during food deprivation in salmonid fish. Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) weighing 43-115 g were either fed ad libitum or deprived of food for 28 days at 10 degrees C to investigate catabolic effects on energy reserves and metabolite patterns. The NMR analysis of plasma, liver, and muscle extracts revealed significant fasting-induced changes in the metabolome. Altered plasma lipoprotein levels and tissue-specific patterns of fatty acid mobilization were the most prominent responses, emphasizing the role of lipids as the primary energy source during fasting. In plasma, very-low-density lipoprotein levels increased in food-deprived fish compared with fed fish, whereas levels of high-density lipoprotein decreased. Signs of muscle protein catabolism were also observed as changes in the alanine dynamics. The results further suggest that mechanisms to preserve liver glycogen are present in the food-deprived fish. This study thus demonstrates the utility of NMR-based metabolomics of tissue extracts and plasma to describe the integrated metabolic status of fish.

Post-smolts in seawater (average mass 175 g) that had been reared at 12 °C were kept at three temperatures (8, 12 and 18 °C) and sampled after one and three months. After three months, the fish kept in 18 °C had decreased growth rate and condition factor, and elevated plasma levels of growth hormone (GH) and leptin, compared with fish kept at the lower temperatures. Food conversion efficiency was also decreased at 18 °C, while at the same time protein uptake was improved and thus was not a limiting mechanism for growth. Redistribution of energy stores in fish at the highest temperature is evident as a preference of maintaining length growth during times of limited energy availability. NMR-based metabolomics analyses of plasma revealed that several metabolites involved in energy metabolism were negatively affected by temperature in the upper temperature range of Atlantic salmon. Specifically, the high temperature induced a decline of several amino acids (glutamine, tyrosine and phenylalanine) and a shift in lipid metabolism. It appears likely that the decreased food intake at the highest temperature is linked to an anorexigenic function of leptin, but also that the decreased food intake, feed conversion efficiency and condition factor can be linked to changes in GH endocrinology.

    • This paper addresses the challenges of exploring metaphor use in a naturalistic environment. We employed an integrative approach to the analysis of metaphor in video-recorded classroom observations of a teacher lecturing on computer programming. The approach involved applying the Procedure for Identifying Metaphorical Scenes (PIMS) and the Metaphor Identification Guidelines for Gesture (MIG-G) both individually and jointly. Our analysis of the data shows that the teacher primarily uses metaphors that evoke experiences of manipulating physical objects while using his hands to add spatiality to these ‘objects’. Furthermore, it indicates that specific gestures may serve as ’anchoring-points’ for larger scenes, enabling the speaker to form a scene in which to place smaller concepts. Throughout the analysis, our integrative approach to metaphor analysis provided opportunities to both support and refute results from each of the procedures employed. Moreover, the PIMS procedure has both served as an efficient tool for identifying central concepts of a scene and a way to validate the results of the gesture analysis. We suggest that this integrative approach to metaphor may be used to provide clues about the embodied motivation of a metaphor at an individual level.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metaphors in gesture and speech play a pivotal role in the way that programming concepts are presented in the classroom. However, little is known about the function of teachers metaphors in practice. This study aims to explore teachers use of metaphors in gesture and speech in a lecture on programming. Based on video observations of three upper secondary teachers, we employ Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) and Metaphor Identification for Gesture Guidelines (MIG-G) as methodological tools for identifying metaphoric speech and gestures related to programming concepts. The results of the study reveal that the gestures of the three teachers mainly function in two ways: (1) to add spatial properties to a programming concept and (2) to provide additional imagery for a programming concept. Consequently, the gestures identified in this study reduce the communicative burden of teachers speech. Furthermore, the study reveals that teachers gestures serve as means for making abstract concepts more tangible. For example, gestures concerning the abstract term "data" can generally be related to an object that could be received or moved. Hence, despite its metaphorical origin, data could be considered a graspable aspect of programming. Furthermore, spatial gestures enable the teachers to communicate programming processes in a tangible way, for example assigning programming processes a forward direction. Theoretical implications, potential implications for teaching and future research are discussed in the paper.

    • Programming is an inherently abstract activity that requires the use of metaphorical?expressions. In this text, I intend to investigate the role of metaphor in programming education by attending to such expressions on a discursive and on a cognitive level. Research on programming metaphors and education shows that teachers often use metaphors that can be related to the programmer’s intentions and to the function of a programming concept. Based on the classroom examples provided in the chapter, however, I argue that it is not always self-evident whether a teacher uses a metaphor in one way or the other. In contrast, the chapter indicates that the meaning of a concept changes in relation to the situation and that much of the teachers’ metaphorical language is in fact based on programming conventions rather than on embodied experiences.

    • Modern multiprocessor systems offer advanced synchronization primitives, built in hardware, to support the development of efficient parallel algorithms. In this paper we develop a simple and efficient algorithm for atomic registers (variables) of arbitrary length. The simplicity and better complexity of the algorithm is achieved via the utilization of two such common synchronization primitives. In this paper we also evaluate the performance of our algorithm and the performance of a practical previously know algorithm that is based only on read and write primitives. The evaluation is performed on 3 well-known, parallel architectures. This evaluation clearly shows that both algorithms are practical and that as the size of the register increases our algorithm performs better, accordingly to its complexity behavior.

    • Physical activity is recommended as first-choice treatment in chronic pain conditions. The aim was to describe the content and perceptions of person-centred health plans, and to evaluate patients' implementation of the health plan in their everyday life.A descriptive retrospective review was conducted of person-centred health plans to support physical activity in 133 participants. Quantitative content analysis was used to analyse the content of the health plans. Questionnaires on physical activity and on implementation and perception of the health plans, and a test of physical capacity were administered.Participants' goals were found to be related to physical function (n=118), general health (n=90), activity and participation (n=80) and symptoms (n=35). Participants identified personal (n=174), social (n=69) and material resources (n=36). They identified fears and obstacles related to health issues (n=95), difficulties getting it done (n=41), competing priorities (n=19) and contextual factors (n=12). Participants identified need for external support (n=110). Participants' level of physical activity and physical capacity increased significantly during the first 6months of the study. The person-centred approach seems helpful in enhancing motivation to achieve set goals and strengthen self-efficacy in physical activity also supported by increased physical activity and physical capacity. Implications for rehabilitationA person-centred approach can be helpful to enhance motivation to achieve set goals and self-efficacy to manage symptoms when engaging in physical activity.Shared documentation of a personal health plan helps to visualize resources to promote regular physical activity as well as alternative ways to reach set goals. The co-created health-plan captures the participant's goals, resources, fears and need of support, helps the participant to overcome challenges, and supports the participant to be physically active.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent work in computer science education shows that natural language plays a pivotal role in learners’ understanding of programming concepts. This study explores metaphorical expressions in four computer programming textbooks and online resources in Swedish upper secondary education. The Metaphor Identification Procedure was applied to identify metaphoric language. The metaphors reveal how expressions such as the ‘program asking’ or the ‘function building’ are structured in relation to embodied experiences. The results show that central concepts are structured in relation to metaphors such as Inanimate Phenomena are Human Agents and Organisation is Physical Structure. Findings also demonstrate differences in the types of metaphors are present in each resource, with Events are Actions communicated most frequently. Lastly, the resources vary in how they describe the role of the programmer: as a ‘constructor’ or ‘instructor’. This implies that the discovered metaphoric structure in textual resources might influence students’ subsequent learning of programming concepts.

    • An “economy of publications and citations” has emerged in academia, where databases as Web of Science and Scopus provide tools for “quality” measurements. The assumption is that such measurements are unbiased in terms of geography, language, gender etc. This is investigated by scrutinizing the “invisible colleges”, i.e. networks of citations in adult learning/education journals, indexed by Scopus. A bibliometric analysis is made of 151,261 direct citation links in 5 journals published between 2006–2014. The outcome shows a pattern of biases: a US/UK, anglophone, male domination. It also shows how the investigated field consists of many loosely connected invisible colleges. This might make the field weak in terms of academic power.

    • Although it is known that solid organ transplant recipients fare worse after COVID-19 infection, data on the impact of COVID-19 on clinical outcomes and allograft function in lung transplant (LTx) recipients are limited and based mainly on reports with short follow-up. In this nationwide study, all LTx recipients with COVID-19 diagnosed from 1 February 2020 to 30 April 2021 were included. The patients were followed until 1 August 2021 or death. We analysed demographics, clinical features, therapeutic management and outcomes, including lung function. Forty-seven patients were identified: median age was 59 (10-78) years, 53.1% were male, and median follow-up was 194 (23-509) days. COVID-19 was asymptomatic or mild at presentation in 48.9%. Nine patients (19.1%) were vaccinated pre-COVID infection. Two patients (4.3%) died within 28days of testing positive, and the overall survival rate was 85.1%. The patients with asymptomatic or mild symptoms had a higher median % expected forced expiratory volume during the first second than the patients with worse symptoms (P=0.004). LTx recipients develop the entire spectrum of COVID-19, and in addition to previously acknowledged risk factors, lower pre-COVID lung function was associated with more severe disease presentation.

    • Containers are gaining popularity in life science research as they provide a solution for encompassing dependencies of provisioned tools, simplify software installations for end users and offer a form of isolation between processes. Scientific workflows are ideal for chaining containers into data analysis pipelines to aid in creating reproducible analyses. In this article, we review a number of approaches to using containers as implemented in the workflow tools Nextflow, Galaxy, Pachyderm, Argo, Kubeflow, Luigi and SciPipe, when deployed in cloud environments. A particular focus is placed on the workflow tool’s interaction with the Kubernetes container orchestration framework.

  • Ingår i: Revisioning STEAM education in times of Climate Change.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To engage students in STEM education and careers has been a question emphasised by policymakers worldwide. However, research has shown that students lose interest in technology and science studies in adolescence. Discontinuity in transitions between educational levels could be one explanation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate possible (dis-) continuities in students’ technology education transition between upper primary and secondary school levels. More specifically, differences in classroom furniture, materials and tools have been investigated. Fifty-two teachers have answered a questionnaire about discontinuities in how the classrooms are equipped and what kinds of tools and construction materials differ between upper primary and secondary education technology classrooms. This may lead to altering possibilities regarding what technology education will become in the different communities of practice.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spatial abilities are one of many predictors for students’ learning of programming. This exploratory stu-dy aims to investigate how a teacher structure spatiality by means of verbs that indicate motion. Data consists of transcribed talk from YouTube videos that the teacher recorded for teaching purposes. The three most common verbs, surf, drive and go, were chosen for systematic identification of metaphors in scenes. The results indicate that “köra” (‘drive’) has divergent meanings in the context of web server programming, compared to their most basic meaning. However, since “drive” has its specific meaning in the context of programming, the metaphor has been conventionalised. For the verbs “surf” and “go” the metaphoric use indicate a motion into a confound area. The motion has the direction “in” or “out”, which gives some indications of spatiality. Overall, the clues on the spatiality of programming from the teachers’ linguistic utterances are sparce. Implications for education are discussed.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The delivery of efficient nonpharmacological treatment to prevent the loss of muscle mass in older adults is a major challenge, and information on the combined effects of training and diet is particularly important. Here we aimed to evaluate the effects of 24 wk of resistance training combined with a healthy dietary approach (n-6/n-3 ratio < 2) in a population of healthy and physically active older women (65-70 years). The three-armed randomized controlled trial included a resistance training + healthy diet group (RT-HD), a resistance training group (RT), and controls (CON). All subjects included in the study were physically active and had low levels of serum inflammatory markers. In accordance with the dietary goals, the n-6/n-3 ratio dietary intake significantly decreased only in RT-HD by 42%. An increase in 1 repetition maximum in leg extension occurred in RT (+20.4%) and RT-HD (+20.8%), but not in CON. Interestingly, leg lean mass significantly increased only in RT-HD (+1.8%). While there were no changes in serum C-reactive protein and IL-6 levels, a significant decrease in serum level of the pro-inflammatory precursor arachidonic acid (-5.3 +/- 9.4%) together with an increase in serum n-3 docosahexaenoic acid (+8.3%) occurred only in RT-HD. Altogether, this study demonstrates that the effects of resistance training on muscle mass in healthy older adults can be optimized by the adoption of a healthy diet.

  • Utbildningens revolutioner : Till studiet av utbildningshistorisk förändring
  • 2017
