  • Evidence and evidence gaps in assessments and interventions in areas related to social work research and practice – an overview of four evidence maps : [Vetenskapligt kunskapsläge om utredning och insatser i socialt arbete och forskning –en sammanställning av fyra kartläggningar]
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Social Work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 26:5, s. 882-895
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This overview of four evidence maps is based on systematic reviews of assessment and interventions in social work practice. The aim was to investigate the evidence and evidence gaps within four important areas for social work research and practice. Descriptive data on search strategies and domains were collected from four evidence maps, on Social Assistance, Substance Dependence, Care for older adults respectively for persons with disabilities. The scientific quality and scientific evidence were assessed. Key findings were summarised by analyzing and discussing common and specific elements in the evidence maps. The overview was undertaken in close collaboration between researchers with expertise in the field and a government agency. The overview identified both evidence and evidence gaps with respect to effects and experiences of interventions and assessment methods in four evidence maps. Evidence maps provide a comprehensive picture of the state of social services research and can thereby be of use to both researchers and practitioners, and in the production of evidence based social work.

  • Linking Education and Research : A Roadmap for Higher Education Institutions at the Dawn of the Knowledge Society
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Linking education and research. - Basel, Switzerland : MDPI. ; , s. 11-33
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In an era characterized by a move towards a “knowledge society”, universities are central in fostering “knowledgeability”, that is the reflexive understanding of knowledge in knowledge societies. The objective of “knowledgeability” can be met through creating a stronger link between education and research. Furthermore, overall student performance, for example in critical thinking and problem solving, can be improved if research-related activities are incorporated into the curriculum. The aim of this paper is to use international examples to discuss the research- education nexus from four different perspectives, namely context, policy, implementation and quality, with case studies from higher education institutions in Singapore and Sweden. We suggest that different integrative technologies can be used to enhance the links, but it will be essential to consider the inputs of training, service and support in using new technology. Interestingly, the act of evaluating the link between education and research will increase awareness of this linkage by stakeholders involved in both education and research. In turn the link can be strengthened, contributing to increased quality in both education and research.

  • Micrometer-resolution X-ray tomographic full-volume reconstruction of an intact post-mortem juvenile rat lung
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Histochemistry and Cell Biology. - : Springer. - 0948-6143 .- 1432-119X. ; 155, s. 215-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we present an X-ray tomographic imaging method that is well suited for pulmonary disease studies in animal models to resolve the full pathway from gas intake to gas exchange. Current state-of-the-art synchrotron-based tomographic phase-contrast imaging methods allow for three-dimensional microscopic imaging data to be acquired non-destructively in scan times of the order of seconds with good soft tissue contrast. However, when studying multi-scale hierarchically structured objects, such as the mammalian lung, the overall sample size typically exceeds the field of view illuminated by the X-rays in a single scan and the necessity for achieving a high spatial resolution conflicts with the need to image the whole sample. Several image stitching and calibration techniques to achieve extended high-resolution fields of view have been reported, but those approaches tend to fail when imaging non-stable samples, thus precluding tomographic measurements of large biological samples, which are prone to degradation and motion during extended scan times. In this work, we demonstrate a full-volume three-dimensional reconstruction of an intact rat lung under immediate post-mortem conditions and at an isotropic voxel size of (2.75 mu m)(3). We present the methodology for collecting multiple local tomographies with 360 degrees extended field of view scans followed by locally non-rigid volumetric stitching. Applied to the lung, it allows to resolve the entire pulmonary structure from the trachea down to the parenchyma in a single dataset. The complete dataset is available online ().

  • Dynamic Mechanical Interactions Between Neighboring Airspaces Determine Cyclic Opening and Closure in Injured Lung
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Critical Care Medicine. - 0090-3493 .- 1530-0293. ; 45:4, s. 687-694
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Positive pressure ventilation exposes the lung to mechanical stresses that can exacerbate injury. The exact mechanism of this pathologic process remains elusive. The goal of this study was to describe recruitment/derecruitment at acinar length scales over short-time frames and test the hypothesis that mechanical interdependence between neighboring lung units determines the spatial and temporal distributions of recruitment/derecruitment, using a computational model. Design: Experimental animal study. Setting: International synchrotron radiation laboratory. Subjects: Four anesthetized rabbits, ventilated in pressure controlled mode. Interventions: The lung was consecutively imaged at - 1.5-minute intervals using phase-contrast synchrotron imaging, at positive end expiratory pressures of 12, 9, 6, 3, and 0 cm H2O before and after lavage and mechanical ventilation induced injury. The extent and spatial distribution of recruitment/derecruitment was analyzed by subtracting subsequent images. In a realistic lung structure, we implemented a mechanistic model in which each unit has individual pressures and speeds of opening and closing. Derecruited and recruited lung fractions (F-derecruaed, F-recruited) were computed based on the comparison of the aerated volumes at successive time points. Measurements and Main Results: Alternative recruitment/derecruitment occurred in neighboring alveoli over short-time scales in all tested positive end-expiratory pressure levels and despite stable pressure controlled mode. The computational model reproduced this behavior only when parenchymal interdependence between neighboring acini was accounted for. Simulations closely mimicked the experimental magnitude of F-derecruited and F-recruited when mechanical interdependence was included, while its exclusion gave F-recruited values of zero at positive end -expiratory pressure greater than or equal to 3 cm H2O. Conclusions: These findings give further insight into the microscopic behavior of the injured lung and provide a means of testing protective-ventilation strategies to prevent recruitment/derecruitment and subsequent lung damage.

  • Individual Airway Closure Characterized In Vivo by Phase-Contrast CT Imaging in Injured Rabbit Lung
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Critical Care Medicine. - : LIPPINCOTT WILLIAMS & WILKINS. - 0090-3493 .- 1530-0293. ; 47:9, s. E774-E781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Airway closure is involved in adverse effects of mechanical ventilation under both general anesthesia and in acute respiratory distress syndrome patients. However, direct evidence and characterization of individual airway closure is lacking. Here, we studied the same individual peripheral airways in intact lungs of anesthetized and mechanically ventilated rabbits, at baseline and following lung injury, using high-resolution synchrotron phase-contrast CT.Design: Laboratory animal investigation.Setting: European synchrotron radiation facility.Subjects: Six New-Zealand White rabbits.Interventions: The animals were anesthetized, paralyzed, and mechanically ventilated in pressure-controlled mode (tidal volume, 6 mL/kg; respiratory rate, 40; Fio(2), 0.6; inspiratory:expiratory, 1:2; and positive end-expiratory pressure, 3 cm H2O) at baseline. Imaging was performed with a 47.5 x 47.5 x 47.5 mu m voxel size, at positive end-expiratory pressure 12, 9, 6, 3, and 0 cm H2O. The imaging sequence was repeated after lung injury induced by whole-lung lavage and injurious ventilation in four rabbits. Cross-sections of the same individual airways were measured.Measurements and Main Results: The airways were measured at baseline (n = 48; radius, 1.7 to 0.21 mm) and after injury (n = 32). Closure was observed at 0 cm H2O in three of 48 airways (6.3%; radius, 0.350.08 mm at positive end-expiratory pressure 12) at baseline and five of 32 (15.6%; radius, 0.28 +/- 0.09 mm) airways after injury. Cross-section was significantly reduced at 3 and 0 cm H2O, after injury, with a significant relation between the relative change in cross-section and airway radius at 12 cm H2O in injured, but not in normal lung (R = 0.60; p < 0.001).Conclusions: Airway collapsibility increases in the injured lung with a significant dependence on airway caliber. We identify "compliant collapse" as the main mechanism of airway closure in initially patent airways, which can occur at more than one site in individual airways.

  • Chapter 6. The new story : On the possibility of liberating oneself from the drug self
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Substance Use & Misuse. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1082-6084 .- 1532-2491. ; 48:13, s. 1350-1359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores the meaning(s) of "treatment effect" within the psychodynamic tradition. The conventional wisdom is that a successful treatment presupposes a transformation of unconscious "material" to a conscious level. The "treatment effect" is reinterpreted as being better understood as changing an old (and detrimental) story into a new tale-an alternative narrative about the self. New possibilities following this conceptual change are introduced with the aid of some concrete examples.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 578:7793, s. 82-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cancer is driven by genetic change, and the advent of massively parallel sequencing has enabled systematic documentation of this variation at the whole-genome scale1–3. Here we report the integrative analysis of 2,658 whole-cancer genomes and their matching normal tissues across 38 tumour types from the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We describe the generation of the PCAWG resource, facilitated by international data sharing using compute clouds. On average, cancer genomes contained 4–5 driver mutations when combining coding and non-coding genomic elements; however, in around 5% of cases no drivers were identified, suggesting that cancer driver discovery is not yet complete. Chromothripsis, in which many clustered structural variants arise in a single catastrophic event, is frequently an early event in tumour evolution; in acral melanoma, for example, these events precede most somatic point mutations and affect several cancer-associated genes simultaneously. Cancers with abnormal telomere maintenance often originate from tissues with low replicative activity and show several mechanisms of preventing telomere attrition to critical levels. Common and rare germline variants affect patterns of somatic mutation, including point mutations, structural variants and somatic retrotransposition. A collection of papers from the PCAWG Consortium describes non-coding mutations that drive cancer beyond those in the TERT promoter4; identifies new signatures of mutational processes that cause base substitutions, small insertions and deletions and structural variation5,6; analyses timings and patterns of tumour evolution7; describes the diverse transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation on splicing, expression levels, fusion genes and promoter activity8,9; and evaluates a range of more-specialized features of cancer genomes8,10–18.

  • Imaging atelectrauma in Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury using 4D X-ray microscopy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mechanical ventilation can damage the lungs, a condition called Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury (VILI). However, the mechanisms leading to VILI at the microscopic scale remain poorly understood. Here we investigated the within-tidal dynamics of cyclic recruitment/derecruitment (R/D) using synchrotron radiation phase-contrast imaging (PCI), and the relation between R/D and cell infiltration, in a model of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in 6 anaesthetized and mechanically ventilated New-Zealand White rabbits. Dynamic PCI was performed at 22.6 mu m voxel size, under protective mechanical ventilation [tidal volume: 6 ml/kg; positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP): 5 cmH(2)O]. Videos and quantitative maps of within-tidal R/D showed that injury propagated outwards from non-aerated regions towards adjacent regions where cyclic R/D was present. R/D of peripheral airspaces was both pressure and time-dependent, occurring throughout the respiratory cycle with significant scatter of opening/closing pressures. There was a significant association between R/D and regional lung cellular infiltration (p=0.04) suggesting that tidal R/D of the lung parenchyma may contribute to regional lung inflammation or capillary-alveolar barrier dysfunction and to the progression of lung injury. PEEP may not fully mitigate this phenomenon even at high levels. Ventilation strategies utilizing the time-dependence of R/D may be helpful in reducing R/D and associated injury.

  • ACE inhibition and cardiometabolic risk factors, lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 gene expression, and plasma ACE2 levels : a Mendelian randomization study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Royal Society Open Science. - : ROYAL SOC. - 2054-5703. ; 7:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and serine protease TMPRSS2 have been implicated in cell entry for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the lung epithelium might have implications for the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severity of COVID-19. We use human genetic variants that proxy angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor drug effects and cardiovascular risk factors to investigate whether these exposures affect lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 gene expression and circulating ACE2 levels. We observed no consistent evidence of an association of genetically predicted serum ACE levels with any of our outcomes. There was weak evidence for an association of genetically predicted serum ACE levels with ACE2 gene expression in the Lung eQTL Consortium (p = 0.014), but this finding did not replicate. There was evidence of a positive association of genetic liability to type 2 diabetes mellitus with lung ACE2 gene expression in the Gene-Tissue Expression (GTEx) study (p = 4 x 10(-4)) and with circulating plasma ACE2 levels in the INTERVAL study (p = 0.03), but not with lung ACE2 expression in the Lung eQTL Consortium study (p = 0.68). There were no associations of genetically proxied liability to the other cardiometabolic traits with any outcome. This study does not provide consistent evidence to support an effect of serum ACE levels (as a proxy for ACE inhibitors) or cardiometabolic risk factors on lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression or plasma ACE2 levels.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing. - : Mary Ann Liebert. - 2329-7662 .- 2329-7670. ; 2:4, s. 152-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes the adoption of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies in Sweden. The data set consists of a recent and representative sample of Swedish AM users (companies, universities, and research institutes). The authors investigate two questions. First, what are the current applications of AM in Sweden (e.g., rapid prototyping [RP], production)? Second, what are the factors that can explain the variation in AM adoption among the users? Using a regression analysis technique, the main findings are as follows. (i) There is a variation among users' choice of AM application, and the majority of users are expanding their AM applications beyond RP. (ii) There are two factors that positively affect the decision of firms to expand classical RP and incorporate production and management as well. These two factors are using multiple AM technologies (as opposed to single fused deposition modeling technology) being small companies. The authors discuss the implication of these results.

  • The Role of Additive Manufacturing Technology in job creation : an exploratory case study of suppliers of Additive Manufacturing in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier. ; , s. 93-98
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • his paper investigates how Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies, as a process innovation, may contribute to a job creation. Further, the various mechanisms in which AM may contribute to an increase in job creation as well as the types of jobs are analyzed. The analysis also goes beyond AM technologies and incorporates other non-technological factors which foster job creation, i.e. higher wages in BRIC countries, lower quality in BRIC countries, and a rising demand for western-made products. The analysis is based on a case study and the data collected was through interviews with three prominent actors within the AM technologies field in Sweden: technology developers, leading suppliers and users. The main findings indicate that AM (i) contributes to job creation in both the manufacturing sector and in the service sector, (ii) does not bring back mass production jobs from emerging economies such as BRIC, (iii) contributes to job creation in product development stages (e.g. rapid prototyping), and (iv) contributes to job creation in production stages of low-volume batches mainly of complex products. The findings also suggest there are barriers for full exploitation of AM in several areas, including education systems.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ICIEA-2022-Europe. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450396059 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In public procurement, byers typically try to resolve the problem of not knowing the tenders before stating their preferences through the use of price relative models or comparison prices and different procurements use slightly different spreadsheet models for tender evaluation. This renders it difficult to assess the quality attributes in a way enabling for evaluating and comparing price-quality properties of real-life tender evaluations. However, tender evaluation is an instance of multi-attribute decision-making, and for each tender evaluation instance there is a corresponding multi-attribute decision model enabling for a more systematic assessment of tender evaluations. In this paper, we investigate how robust the selection of tenders in IT procurement are towards changes in the assessment of quality and to the presence of quality attributes in the tender evaluation model. Conclusions include that "decisive"attributes cannot be expected to exist, and that score based tender evaluation model with precise estimates of quality levels put strong demands on the capabilities of the buyer.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Substance Use & Misuse. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1082-6084 .- 1532-2491. ; 48:13, s. 1306-1316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter examines the possibilities and limitations of using a narrative method as a framework within a multidimensional model for exploring and analyzing the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs. It is posited that a multidimensional model, based on narrative reasoning, can give a more detailed and specific understanding of substance users, who represent a heterogeneous population of people, and of substance use-related dependency problems. Such a model describes and analyses the drug-use related problems in a manner that provides holistic and important information and knowledge about the person by contextual and situation interaction processes which are involved in the use/misuse of alcohol and drugs. Tentative conclusions and unresolved critical issues are considered.

    • This article discusses different self-theoretical perspectives of the self that are of importance in the analysis of the use and misuse of alcohol and psychoactive drugs. The self-theories considered here include cognitive, psychodynamic, transpersonal, and social constructivist perspectives. A multidimensional perspective focusing on the connection between identity structures and analyzing the use/misuse of alcohol and psychoactive drugs is presented. The article argues for a self-theoretical analysis based on narrative data in order to reach an in-depth understanding of the use and misuse of alcohol and psychoactive drugs.

  • Det andra jaget vid manlig transvestism : Ett jagteoretiskt och kognitionspsykologiskt perspektiv : [a self-theoretical and cognitive psychology perspective]
  • 1997
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is a comprehensive examination of cross dressing among men and providesdescriptive information, a review of the literature and some new research data. The theoreticalpart presents a multidimensional model for the analysis of transvestism. Various theoreticalapproaches are analyzed and a self theory based on a cognitive and transpersonal psychologyperspective is successfully elaborated. Transvestism is viewed as a multidetermined phenomena. One important argument in the model is that transvestism can be seen as an expression of a second self or a feminine self. The feminine self is conceptualized as a subsystem of the self. The empirical section of the thesis contains three different studies. The main part focuseson a qualitative in-depth analysis of a group of twelve transvestites from a cross dressing clubin Sweden, This group of transvestites is also compared with a small group of marginaltransvestites and male-to-female transsexuals. The empirical results give a detailed picture ofthe experiential world of the transvestite and the cognitive and affective changes associatedwith cross dressing. The results confirm previous findings that male transvestism can be seenas an expression of a second self or a feminine self and that cross dressing follows a dynamicpattern from an early "fetishistic stage" to a later "gender identity stage".The second part of the empirical study contains a comparison between treated and untreated male cross-dressers. This comparison was based on an interview study with 92 male members of a cross dressing club in Sweden. Multiple comparisons showed many similarities between the two groups. However, those in the treated group were more often unmarried or divorced, had experienced more difficulties functioning in the male gender role and also seemed to have a more intense identification with the feminine self. The third part of the empirical section reviews the findings from a study of 50 wives andlong-term partners of transvestites in Sweden. The results show both positive, neutral andnegative attitudes in various degrees towards cross dressing and both positive and negativefactors in marriage attributed to transvestism.

    • The chapter presents a multidimensional model where alcohol and drug use-misuse is considered as a multifactorial bio-psychosocial process. The multidimensional model describes the complexity of factors that contribute to alcohol and drug usemisuse and how this makes its study very challenging. The theoretical model considers many dimensions related to different intrapersonal and extra-personal factors affecting alcohol- and drug use-misuse.The intrapersonal influences include processes contributing to personal differences in alcohol and drug use. The focus is especially on neurobiological processes, personality, affective states, including, cognitive motivation or expectancies as behavioral motivators. Extra-personal influences consider demographics, environmental, social and sociocultural factors.
