  • Simulation Aided Design and Testing of Hydromechanical Transmissions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The 9th JFPS International Symposium on Fluid Power, Matsue, 2014. - 4931070108
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper demonstrates the use of high-speed simulation in transmission conceptual design and presents a transmission test bed for hardware-in-the-loop simulations of hydromechanical transmission concepts. Complex transmissions, such as multiple-mode hydromechanical transmissions and hydraulic hybrid transmissions, present new difficulties and costs in the development process. There is today a greater demand for more efficient product development and more work has shifted towards simulation. The Hopsan simulation package allows robust, high-speed simulations suitable for both offline and hardware-in-the-loop simulation. New simulation models for hydromechanical transmissions are developed and used to simulate a known two-mode transmission concept. The same concept is also tested in hardware-in-the-loop simulations in the proposed transmission test bed. Results show good agreement with the hardware tests and highlight the proficiency of the simulation tools.

  • Considerations and consequences of allowing DNA sequence data as types of fungal taxa
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IMA Fungus. - : INT MYCOLOGICAL ASSOC. - 2210-6340 .- 2210-6359. ; 9:1, s. 167-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN.

  • Does permissive hypoxaemia during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cause long-term neurological impairment? : A study in patients with H1N1-induced severe respiratory failure
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Anaesthesiology. - 0265-0215 .- 1365-2346. ; 34:2, s. 98-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation accepts permissive hypoxaemia in adult patients during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The neurological long-term outcome of this approach has not yet been studied.OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence of brain lesions and cognitive dysfunction in survivors from the Influenza A/H1N1 2009 pandemic treated with permissive hypoxaemia during ECMO for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Our hypothesis was that this method is reasonable if tissue hypoxia is avoided.DESIGN: Long-term follow-up study after ECMO.SETTING: Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden, from October 2012 to July 2013.PATIENTS: Seven patients treated with ECMO for severe influenza A/H1N1-induced ARDS were studied 3.2 years after treatment. Blood lactate concentrations were used as a surrogate for tissue oxygenation.INTERVENTIONS: Neurocognitive outcome was studied with standardised cognitive tests and MRI of the brain.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cognitive functioning and hypoxic brain lesions after permissive hypoxaemia during ECMO. The observation period was the first 10 days of ECMO or the entire treatment period if shorter than 10 days.RESULTS: Eleven of 13 patients were still alive 3 years after ECMO. We were able to contact seven of these patients (mean age 31 years), who all agreed to participate in this study. Mean +/- SD peripherally measured arterial saturation during the observation period was 79 +/- 10%. Full-scale Intelligence Quotient was within one standard deviation or above from the mean of a healthy population in five patients, and was 1.5 SD below the mean in one patient. In one other patient, it could not be determined because of a lack of formal education. Memory functioning was normal in all patients. MRI showed no changes related to cerebral hypoxia.CONCLUSIONS: Permissive hypoxaemia during ECMO might not negatively affect long-term cognitive outcome if adequate organ perfusion is maintained.

  • Four-view Geometry with Unknown Radial Distortion
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. - 9798350301298 ; , s. 8990-9000
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present novel solutions to previously unsolved prob-lems of relative pose estimation from images whose calibration parameters, namely focal lengths and radial distortion, are unknown. Our approach enables metric reconstruction without modeling these parameters. The minimal case for reconstruction requires 13 points in 4 views for both the calibrated and uncalibrated cameras. We describe and implement the first solution to these minimal problems. In the calibrated case, this may be modeled as a polynomial sys-tem of equations with 3584 solutions. Despite the apparent intractability, the problem decomposes spectacularly. Each solution falls into a Euclidean symmetry class of size 16, and we can estimate 224 class representatives by solving a sequence of three subproblems with 28, 2, and 4 solutions. We highlight the relationship between internal constraints on the radial quadrifocal tensor and the relations among the principal minors of a 4× 4 matrix. We also address the case of 4 upright cameras, where 7 points are minimal. Finally, we evaluate our approach on simulated and real data and benchmark against previous calibration-free solutions, and show that our method provides an efficient startup for an SfM pipeline with radial cameras.

  • Efficient Time-of-Arrival Self-Calibration using Source Implicitization
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 31st European Signal Processing Conference, EUSIPCO 2023 - Proceedings. - 2219-5491. - 9789464593600 ; , s. 1644-1648
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we revisit the Time-of-Arrival self-calibration problem. In particular we focus on imbalanced problem instances where there are significantly more sources compared to the number of receivers, which is a common configuration in real applications. Using an implicit representation, we are able to re-parameterize the sensor node self-calibration problem using only the parameters of the receiver positions. Making the source positions implicit, we show that it is possible to linearize the maximum-likelihood error around the measured distances, resulting in a Sampson-like approximation. Given four unknown receiver positions and a large number of unknown sender positions, we show that our formulation leads to algorithms for robust calibration, with significant speed-up compared to running the full optimization over all unknowns. The proposed method is tested on both synthetic and real data.

  • Optimal Trilateration Is an Eigenvalue Problem
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, ICASSP 2019 - Proceedings. - 9781479981311 ; 2019-May, s. 5586-5590
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of estimating receiver or sender node positions from measured receiver-sender distances is a key issue in different applications such as microphone array calibration, radio antenna array calibration, mapping and positioning using UWB or using round-trip-time measurements between mobile phones and WiFi-units. In this paper we address the problem of optimally estimating a receiver position given a number of distance measurements to known sender positions, so called trilateration. We show that this problem can be rephrased as an eigenvalue problem. We also address different error models and the multilateration setting where an additional offset is also unknown, and show that these problems can be modeled using the same framework.

  • Back to the Feature: Learning Robust Camera Localization from Pixels to Pose
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. - 1063-6919. ; , s. 3246-3256
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Camera pose estimation in known scenes is a 3D geometry task recently tackled by multiple learning algorithms. Many regress precise geometric quantities, like poses or 3D points, from an input image. This either fails to generalize to new viewpoints or ties the model parameters to a specific scene. In this paper, we go Back to the Feature: we argue that deep networks should focus on learning robust and invariant visual features, while the geometric estimation should be left to principled algorithms. We introduce PixLoc, a scene-agnostic neural network that estimates an accurate 6-DoF pose from an image and a 3D model. Our approach is based on the direct alignment of multiscale deep features, casting camera localization as metric learning. PixLoc learns strong data priors by end-to-end training from pixels to pose and exhibits exceptional generalization to new scenes by separating model parameters and scene geometry. The system can localize in large environments given coarse pose priors but also improve the accuracy of sparse feature matching by jointly refining keypoints and poses with little overhead. The code will be publicly available at github.com/cvg/pixloc.

  • Rolling Shutter Camera Absolute Pose
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. - 0162-8828. ; 42:6, s. 1439-1452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present minimal, non-iterative solutions to the absolute pose problem for images from rolling shutter cameras. The absolute pose problem is a key problem in computer vision and rolling shutter is present in a vast majority of today's digital cameras. We discuss several camera motion models and propose two feasible rolling shutter camera models for a polynomial solver. In previous work a linearized camera model was used that required an initial estimate of the camera orientation. We show how to simplify the system of equations and make this solver faster. Furthermore, we present a first solution of the non-linearized camera orientation model using the Cayley parameterization. The new solver does not require any initial camera orientation estimate and therefore serves as a standalone solution to the rolling shutter camera pose problem from six 2D-to-3D correspondences. We show that our algorithms outperform P3P followed by a non-linear refinement using a rolling shutter model.

  • A Cross-Platform Mobile Application for Ambulance CPR during Cardiac Arrests
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 8th International Conference on Soft Computing & Machine Intelligence (ISCMI). - Piscataway : IEEE. - 9781728186832 - 9781728186825 - 9781728186849 ; , s. 120-124
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the implementation of a cross-platform software application to aid ambulance paramedics during CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation). It must be able to work both on iOS and Android devices, which are the leading platforms in the mobile industry. The goal of the application is to guide paramedics in the different processes and expected medication to be administered during a cardiac arrest, a scenario that is usually stressful and fast-paced, thus prone to errors or distractions. The tool must provide timely reminders of the different actions to be performed during a cardiac arrest, and in an appropriate order, based on the results of the previous actions. A timer function will also control the duration of each step of the CPR procedure. The application is implemented in React Native which, using JavaScript as programming language, allows to deploy applications that can run both in iOS and Android native languages. Our solution could also serve as a record of events that could be transmitted (even in real-time) to the hospital without demanding explicit verbal communication of the procedures or medications administered to the patient during the ambulance trip. This would provide even higher efficiency in the process, and would allow automatic incorporation of the events to the medical record of the patient as well. © 2021 IEEE.

  • Shape-aware label fusion for multi-atlas frameworks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Pattern Recognition Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-8655. ; 124, s. 109-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite of having no explicit shape model, multi-atlas approaches to image segmentation have proved to be a top-performer for several diverse datasets and imaging modalities. In this paper, we show how one can directly incorporate shape regularization into the multi-atlas framework. Unlike traditional multi-atlas methods, our proposed approach does not rely on label fusion on the voxel level. Instead, each registered atlas is viewed as an estimate of the position of a shape model. We evaluate and compare our method on two public benchmarks: (i) the VISCERAL Grand Challenge on multi-organ segmentation of whole-body CT images and (ii) the Hammers brain atlas of MR images for segmenting the hippocampus and the amygdala. For this wide spectrum of both easy and hard segmentation tasks, our experimental quantitative results are on par or better than state-of-the-art. More importantly, we obtain qualitatively better segmentation boundaries, for instance, preserving topology and fine structures.

  • Thin film metal sensors in fusion bonded glass chips for high-pressure microfluidics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering. - : IOP Publishing. - 0960-1317 .- 1361-6439. ; 27:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-pressure microfluidics offers fast analyses of thermodynamic parameters for compressed process solvents. However, microfluidic platforms handling highly compressible supercritical CO2 are difficult to control, and on-chip sensing would offer added control of the devices. Therefore, there is a need to integrate sensors into highly pressure tolerant glass chips. In this paper, thin film Pt sensors were embedded in shallow etched trenches in a glass wafer that was bonded with another glass wafer having microfluidic channels. The devices having sensors integrated into the flow channels sustained pressures up to 220 bar, typical for the operation of supercritical CO2. No leakage from the devices could be found. Integrated temperature sensors were capable of measuring local decompression cooling effects and integrated calorimetric sensors measured flow velocities over the range 0.5-13.8 mm/s. By this, a better control of high-pressure microfluidic platforms has been achieved.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is an experience report of team Halmstad from the participation in a competition organised by the i-GAME project, the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge 2016. The competition was held in Helmond, The Netherlands, during the last weekend of May 2016. We give an overview of our car’s control and communication system that was developed for the competition following the requirements and specifications of the i-GAME project. In particular, we describe our implementation of cooperative adaptive cruise control, our solution to the communication and logging requirements, as well as the high level decision making support. For the actual competition we did not manage to completely reach all of the goals set out by the organizers as well as ourselves. However, this did not prevent us from outperforming the competition. Moreover, the competition allowed us to collect data for further evaluation of our solutions to cooperative driving. Thus, we discuss what we believe were the strong points of our system, and discuss post-competition evaluation of the developments that were not fully integrated into our system during competition time. © 2000-2011 IEEE.

  • An Evaluation of Discharge Strategies for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 25th Aachen Colloquium.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Discharge strategies for known routes are tested in a Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV in order to evaluate fuel consumption for the drivetrain of a real commuting cycle. An approximate optimal solution is obtained by dynamic programming. The method is implemented in the vehicle control system and compared to a heuristic strategy. The work has been carried out at Volvo Cars test facilities in Gothenburg. Results show that for a known route both combustion engine and battery efficiency increases in both tested methods, with decreased charge transfer through the battery and less charge sustain operation. The dynamic programming strategy has previously been shown to outperform rule based strategies in terms of fuel consumption by comparing the methods in simulation studies. In this study the dynamic programming solution reduced the consumption with - 4 %, and the heuristic strategy decreased consumption even further to - 8 %.

  • Localizing Unsynchronized Sensors With Unknown Sources
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1053-587X. ; 71, s. 641-654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a method for sensor array self-localization using a set of sources at unknown locations. The sources produce signals whose times of arrival are registered at the sensors. We look at the general case where neither the emission times of the sources nor the reference time frames of the receivers are known. Unlike previous work, our method directly recovers the array geometry, instead of first estimating the timing information. The key component is a new loss function which is insensitive to the unknown timings. We cast the problem as a minimization of a non-convex functional of the Euclidean distance matrix of microphones and sources subject to certain non-convex constraints. After convexification, we obtain a semidefinite relaxation which gives an approximate solution; subsequent refinement on the proposed loss via the Levenberg-Marquardt scheme gives the final locations. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of reconstruction accuracy, speed, and the ability to work with a small number of sources and receivers. It can also handle missing measurements and exploit prior geometric and temporal knowledge, for example if either the receiver offsets or the emission times are known, or if the array contains compact subarrays with known geometry.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We outline a formulation of membrane dynamics in D=8 which is fully covariant under the U-duality group SL(2,Z) x SL(3,Z), and encodes all interactions to fields in the eight-dimensional supergravity, which is constructed through Kaluza--Klein reduction on T^3. Among the membrane degrees of freedom is an SL(2,R) doublet of world-volume 2-form potentials, whose quantised electric fluxes determine the membrane charges, and are conjectured to provide an interpretation of the variables occurring in minimal representations of U-duality groups. We solve the relevant equations for the action for a restricted class of supergravity backgrounds. Some comments are made on supersymmetry and lower dimensions.

  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2023 IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality Adjunct, ISMAR-Adjunct 2023. - 9798350328912 ; , s. 549-554
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recent singleshot multiplane image (MPI) generation enables to copy an observed reality within a camera frame into other reality domains via view synthesis. While the scene scale is unknown due to the nature of singleshot MPI processing, camera tracking algorithms can estimate depth within the application world coordinate system. Given such depth information, we propose to adjust the scale of singleshot MPI to that of the currently observed scene. We find the individual scales of the MPI layers by minimizing the differences between the depth of MPI rendering and that of camera tracking. We eventually found that many layers fall within a close depth. Therefore, we merge such layers into one to compact the MPI representation. We compared our method with baselines using real and synthetic datasets with dense and sparse depth inputs. Our results demonstrate that our algorithm achieves higher scores in image metrics and reduces MPI data amount by up to 78%.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the problem of estimating the semi-generalized pose of a partially calibrated camera, i.e., the pose of a perspective camera with unknown focal length w.r.t. a generalized camera, from a hybrid set of 2D-2D and 2D-3D point correspondences. We study all possible camera configurations within the generalized camera system. To derive practical solvers to previously unsolved challenging configurations, we test different parameterizations as well as different solving strategies based on state-of-the-art methods for generating efficient polynomial solvers. We evaluate the three most promising solvers, i.e., the H51f solver with five 2D-2D correspondences and one 2D-3D match viewed by the same camera inside the generalized camera, the H32f solver with three 2D-2D and two 2D-3D correspondences, and the H13f solver with one 2D-2D and three 2D-3D matches, on synthetic and real data. We show that in the presence of noise in the 3D points these solvers provide better estimates than the corresponding absolute pose solvers.

    • Hopsan is an open-source simulation package developed as a collaboration project between industry and academia. The simulation methodology is based on transmission line modelling, which provides several benefits such as linear model scalability, numerical robustness and parallel simulation. All sub-models are pre-compiled, so that no compilation is required prior to starting a simulation. Default component libraries are available for hydraulic, mechanic, pneumatic, electric and signal domains. Custom components can be written in C++ or generated from Modelica and Mathematica. Support for simulation-based optimization is provided using population-based, evolutionary or direct-search algorithms. Recent research has largely focused on co-simulation with other simulation tools. This is achieved either by using the Functional Mock-up Interface standard, or by tool-to-tool communications. This paper provides a description of the program and its features, the current status of the project, and an overview of recent and ongoing use cases from industry and academia.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7683 .- 0924-9907. ; 64:1, s. 57-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Why is it that semidefinite relaxations have been so successful in numerous applications in computer vision and robotics for solving non-convex optimization problems involving rotations? In studying the empirical performance, we note that there are few failure cases reported in the literature, in particular for estimation problems with a single rotation, motivating us to gain further theoretical understanding. A general framework based on tools from algebraic geometry is introduced for analyzing the power of semidefinite relaxations of problems with quadratic objective functions and rotational constraints. Applications include registration, hand–eye calibration, and rotation averaging. We characterize the extreme points and show that there exist failure cases for which the relaxation is not tight, even in the case of a single rotation. We also show that some problem classes are always tight given an appropriate parametrization. Our theoretical findings are accompanied with numerical simulations, providing further evidence and understanding of the results.

    • Local feature matching is a critical part of many computer vision pipelines, including among others Structure-from-Motion, SLAM, and Visual Localization. However, due to limitations in the descriptors, raw matches are often contaminated by a majority of outliers. As a result, outlier detection is a fundamental problem in computer vision and a wide range of approaches, from simple checks based on descriptor similarity to geometric verification, have been proposed over the last decades. In recent years, deep learning-based approaches to outlier detection have become popular. Unfortunately, the corresponding works rarely compare with strong classical baselines. In this paper we revisit handcrafted approaches to outlier filtering. Based on best practices, we propose a hierarchical pipeline for effective outlier detection as well as integrate novel ideas which in sum lead to an efficient and competitive approach to outlier rejection. We show that our approach, although not relying on learning, is more than competitive to both recent learned works as well as handcrafted approaches, both in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. • This paper investigates the reliability of different noise estimators aimed at determining the Moderator Temperature Coefficient (MTC) of reactivity in Pressurized Water Reactors. By monitoring the inherent fluctuations in the neutron flux and moderator temperature, an on-line monitoring of the MTC without perturbing reactor operation is possible. In order to get an accurate estimation of the MTC by noise analysis, the point-kinetic component of the neutron noise and the core-averaged moderator temperature noise have to be used. Because of the scarcity of the in-core instrumentation, the determination of these quantities is difficult, and several possibilities thus exist for estimating the MTC by noise analysis. Furthermore, the effect of feedback has to be negligible at the frequency chosen for estimating the MTC in order to get a proper determination of the MTC. By using an integrated neutronic/thermal-hydraulic model specifically developed for estimating the three-dimensional distributions of the fluctuations in neutron flux, moderator properties, and fuel temperature, different approaches for estimating the MTC by noise analysis can be tested individually. It is demonstrated that a reliable MTC estimation can only be provided if the core is equipped with a sufficient number of both neutron detectors and temperature sensors, i.e. if the core contain in-core detectors monitoring both the axial and radial distributions of the fluctuations in neutron flux and moderator temperature. It is further proven that the effect of feedback is negligible for frequencies higher than 0.1 Hz, and thus the MTC noise estimations have to be performed at higher frequencies.

    • One of the classical multi-view geometry problems is the so called P3P problem, where the absolute pose of a calibrated camera is determined from three 2D-to-3D correspondences. Since these solvers form a critical component of many vision systems (e.g. in localization and Structure-from-Motion), there have been significant effort in developing faster and more stable algorithms. While the current state-of-the-art solvers are both extremely fast and stable, there still exist configurations where they break down. In this paper we algebraically formulate the problem as finding the intersection of two conics. With this formulation we are able to analytically characterize the real roots of the polynomial system and employ a tailored solution strategy for each problem instance. The result is a fast and stable solver, that is able to correctly solve cases where competing methods might fail. Our experimental evaluation shows that we outperform the current state-of-the-art methods both in terms of speed and success rate.

    • A distinctive representation of image patches in form of features is a key component of many computer vision and robotics tasks, such as image matching, image retrieval, and visual localization. State-of-the-art descriptors, from hand-crafted descriptors such as SIFT to learned ones such as HardNet, are usually high-dimensional; 128 dimensions or even more. The higher the dimensionality, the larger the memory consumption and computational time for approaches using such descriptors. In this paper, we investigate multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) to extract low-dimensional but high-quality descriptors. We thoroughly analyze our method in unsuper-vised, self-supervised, and supervised settings, and evaluate the dimensionality reduction results on four representative descriptors. We consider different applications, including visual localization, patch verification, image matching and retrieval. The experiments show that our lightweight MLPs trained using supervised method achieve better dimensionality reduction than PCA. The lower-dimensional descriptors generated by our approach outperform the original higher-dimensional descriptors in downstream tasks, especially for the hand-crafted ones. • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reduced lung function is associated with cardiovascular mortality, but the relationships with atherosclerosis are unclear. The population-based Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage study measured lung function, emphysema, coronary CT angiography, coronary calcium, carotid plaques and ankle-brachial index in 29,593 men and women aged 50–64 years. The results were confirmed using 2-sample Mendelian randomization. Lower lung function and emphysema were associated with more atherosclerosis, but these relationships were attenuated after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors. Lung function was not associated with coronary atherosclerosis in 14,524 never-smokers. No potentially causal effect of lung function on atherosclerosis, or vice versa, was found in the 2-sample Mendelian randomization analysis. Here we show that reduced lung function and atherosclerosis are correlated in the population, but probably not causally related. Assessing lung function in addition to conventional cardiovascular risk factors to gauge risk of subclinical atherosclerosis is probably not meaningful, but low lung function found by chance should alert for atherosclerosis.

    • This paper presents a pipeline which uses a multiatlas approach for multiorgan segmentation in whole-body CT images. In order to obtain accurate registrations between the target and the atlas images, we develop an adapted feature-based method which uses organ-specific features. These features are learnt during an offline preprocessing step, and thus, the algorithm still benefits from the speed of feature-based registration methods. These feature sets are then used to obtain pairwise non-rigid transformations using RANSAC followed by a thin-plate spline refinement or NiftyReg. The fusion of the transferred atlas labels is performed using a random forest classifier, and finally, the segmentation is obtained using graph cuts with a Potts model as interaction term. Our pipeline was evaluated on 20 organs in 10 whole-body CT images at the VISCERAL Anatomy Challenge, in conjunction with the International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging, Brooklyn, New York, in April 2015. It performed best on majority of the organs, with respect to the Dice index.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dopamine (DA) neurons of the midbrain are at risk to become affected by mitochondrial damage over time and mitochondrial defects have been frequently reported in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, the causal contribution of adult-onset mitochondrial dysfunction to PD remains uncertain. Here, we developed a mouse model lacking Mitofusin 2 (MFN2), a key regulator of mitochondrial network homeostasis, in adult midbrain DA neurons. The knockout mice develop severe and progressive DA neuron-specific mitochondrial dysfunction resulting in neurodegeneration and parkinsonism. To gain further insights into pathophysiological events, we performed transcriptomic analyses of isolated DA neurons and found that mitochondrial dysfunction triggers an early onset immune response, which precedes mitochondrial swelling, mtDNA depletion, respiratory chain deficiency and cell death. Our experiments show that the immune response is an early pathological event when mitochondrial dysfunction is induced in adult midbrain DA neurons and that neuronal death may be promoted non-cell autonomously by the cross-talk and activation of surrounding glial cells.

  • Ingår i: Image and Vision Computing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0262-8856. ; 52, s. 114-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the key challenges for structure from motion systems in order to make them robust to failure is the ability to handle outliers among the correspondences. In this paper we present two new algorithms that find the optimal solution in the presence of outliers when the camera undergoes a pure translation. The first algorithm has polynomial-time computational complexity, independently of the amount of outliers. The second algorithm does not offer such a theoretical complexity guarantee, but we demonstrate that it is magnitudes faster in practice. No random sampling approaches such as RANSAC are guaranteed to find an optimal solution, while our two methods do. We evaluate and compare the algorithms both on synthetic and real experiments. We also embed the algorithms in a larger system, where we optimize for the rotation angle as well (the rotation axis is measured by other means). The experiments show that for problems with a large amount of outliers, the RANSAC estimates may deteriorate compared to our optimal methods.

    • Previous work on estimating the epipolar geometry of two views relies on being able to reliably match feature points based on appearance. In this paper, we go one step further and show that it is feasible to compute both the epipolar geometry and the correspondences at the same time based on geometry only. We do this in a globally optimal manner. Our approach is based on an efficient branch and bound technique in combination with bipartite matching to solve the correspondence problem. We rely on several recent works to obtain good bounding functions to battle the combinatorial explosion of possible matchings. It is experimentally demonstrated that more difficult cases can be handled and that more inlier correspondences can be obtained by being less restrictive in the matching phase.

    • Outliers pose a problem in all real structure from motion systems. Due to the use of automatic matching methods one has to expect that a (sometimes very large) portion of the detected correspondences can be incorrect. In this paper we propose a method that estimates the relative translation between two cameras and simultaneously maximizes the number of inlier correspondences. Traditionally, outlier removal tasks have been addressed using RANSAC approaches. However, these are random in nature and offer no guarantees of finding a good solution. If the amount of mismatches is large, the approach becomes costly because of the need to evaluate a large number of random samples. In contrast, our approach is based on the branch and bound methodology which guarantees that an optimal solution will be found. While most optimal methods trade speed for optimality, the proposed algorithm has competitive running times on problem sizes well beyond what is common in practice. Experiments on both real and synthetic data show that the method outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives, including RANSAC, in terms of solution quality. In addition, the approach is shown to be faster than RANSAC in settings with a large amount of outliers.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have predefined driving modes, e.g. electric drive and charge sustaining mode. For a driver it is not a trivial task to select a fuel optimal sequence of driving modes; a poor selection might even result in a severely degraded fuel economy. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate optimal mode selection along a well known commuter route. To obtain a predictable driving behaviour it is assumed that the driving mode is only allowed to change at a limited number of decision points, located where the driving conditions along the route changes. The optimal mode selection is computed using the well known Dynamic Programming algorithm. However, the results show that the optimal mode selection might be perceived as counterintuitive, as a mode is not necessarily optimal over a connected set with respect to battery state of charge, at a given decision point. To mitigate this type of behaviour a suboptimal algorithm is proposed, in which a mode is associated with one unique interval of state of charge at any decision point along the route. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm is only marginally suboptimal with respect to the optimal solution.

    • Oral assessment is an important method to evaluate the learning outcomes of scientific courses. However, there are certain limitations when oral assessment is applied. One of these limitations, which is not apparent in anonymous written exams, is the existence of biases which could lead to unfair (positive or negative) outcomes of the assessment. This could lead to decreased motivation and sense of belonging among minority student groups, potentially upholding or even increasing inequalities. The major issue with biases is that most of them are unconscious, meaning that it is very tough to mitigate. In this manuscript, we analyze the emergence and effect of expectancy-based bias through personal construct theory in order to find approaches to reduce the influence of bias in oral assessment. As such, we address biases existing before interaction with the student (stereotype), emerging from interaction with the student (halo bias), and how these can contribute to a biased idea of the student in the evaluator’s mind. We finally discuss how this can cause cognitive dissonance and biased assessment when student performance is not in line with the teacher's cognitive model of the student and propose solutions on how to deal with this to minimize bias in oral assessment.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies optimal thermal management and charging of a battery electric vehicle driving over long-distance trips. The focus is on the potential benefits of including a heat pump in the thermal management system for waste heat recovery, and charging point planning, in a way to achieve optimality in time, energy, or their trade-off. An optimal control problem is formulated, in which the objective function includes the energy delivered by the charger(s), and the total charging time including the actual charging time and the detour time to and from the charging stop. To reduce the computational complexity, the formulated problem is then transformed into a hybrid dynamical system, where charging dynamics are modeled in the domain of normalized charging time. Driving dynamics can be modeled in either trip time or travel distance domains, as the vehicle speed is assumed to be known a priori, and the vehicle is only stopping at charging locations. Within the hybrid dynamical system, a binary variable is introduced for each charging location, in order to decide whether to use or skip a charger. This problem is solved numerically, and simulations are performed to evaluate the performance in terms of energy efficiency and time. The simulation results indicate that the time required for charging and total energy consumption are reduced up to $30.6\%$ and $19.4\%$, respectively, by applying the proposed algorithm.

  • Ingår i: IFAC-PapersOnLine. - 2405-8963. ; 56:2, s. 6630-6635
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates battery preheating before fast charging, for a battery electric vehicle (BEV) driving in a cold climate. To prevent the battery from performance degradation at low temperatures, a thermal management system has been considered, including a high-voltage coolant heater (HVCH) for the battery and cabin compartment heating. Accordingly, an optimal control problem (OCP) has been formulated in the form of a nonlinear program (NLP), aiming at minimising the total energy consumption of the battery. The main focus here is to develop a computationally efficient approach, mimicking the optimal preheating behavior without a noticeable increase in the total energy consumption. The proposed algorithm is simple enough to be implemented in a low-level electronic control unit of the vehicle, by eliminating the need for solving the full NLP in the cost of only 1 Wh increase in the total energy consumption.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses optimal battery thermal management, charging, and eco-driving of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) with the goal of improving its grid-to-meter energy efficiency. Thus, an optimization problem is formulated, aiming at finding the optimal trade-off between trip time and charging cost. The formulated problem is then transformed into a hybrid dynamical system, where the dynamics in driving and charging modes are modeled with different functions and with different state and control vectors. Moreover, to improve computational efficiency, we propose modeling the driving dynamics in a spatial domain, where decisions are made along the traveled distance. Charging dynamics are modeled in a temporal domain, where decisions are made along a normalized charging time. The actual charging time is modeled as a scalar variable that is optimized simultaneously with the optimal state and control trajectories, for both charging and driving modes. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed over a road with a hilly terrain, where two charging possibilities are considered along the driving route and the battery is soaked to the ambient before departure. According to the results, trip time including driving and charging times, is reduced by 44%, compared to a case without active heating/cooling of the battery.

    • The outcome of Design, Innovation and Product development research is often manifested asrecommendations in the form of methods, but these do not always find their way intoindustrial application. This paper elaborates on drivers and barriers for the spread of productdevelopment methodology based on 41 interviews with managers, designers, developers andknowledge brokers. Results indicate a range of motives for adopting methods including e.g.coordination of different actors, generation of documentation, methods serving as tools forvarious design tasks etc. However; the value of tools must be seen in relation to localconditions and practices. The spread of methods occurs between and within organisations andmay be actively supported while ideally “good tools spread themselves”. Participants call formethods to be scalable or malleable, guiding, informing and enabling without constraining orenforcing too rigid procedures.

    • The base (BOP) and the top (TOP) of the world income pyramid represent the poor people and the people from developed countries, respectively. About two-fifths of the world population can be categorized as poor. Poverty is a trap because children born to poor parents are likely to grow up to be poor adults. In recent years, a poverty reduction approach that combines business development with poverty alleviation has received attention. The design of products for the BOP is an important ingredient of this poverty reduction approach. While companies are beginning to address the product needs of the BOP, there is limited practical and theoretical knowledge to support them. The current understanding of the design for the BOP is limited. This study, using a protocol analysis, compared the design processes for the BOP and TOP markets. The results indicate the differences between the design processes for these markets in terms of the design strategy employed by the designers (i.e. problem driven, solution driven strategy), their requirements handling behaviour, and their information behaviour. We have discussed the implications of the findings for design practice and education.

    • Abstract in Undetermined The importance of ideation in the conceptual design phase has been widely accepted. Shah et al. (2003) developed four key metrics for evaluating a designer’s exploration and expansion of design space. The four metrics are: novelty, variety, quality, and quantity of designs. The mean of novelty scores of ideas in a set (i.e. Average Novelty - AN) has also been used in some ideation studies. However, many of the studies that have computed AN and variety, have not examined the interdependency between them. This research aims at examining the interdependency between AN and variety.

    • Idea generation is an important part of the engineering design process, and therefore significant research efforts have focused on developing methods to support designers in generating ideas. A key factor is the measurement of ideation effectiveness. The effectiveness of idea generation methods can be measured using metrics such as novelty, variety, quantity, and quality. Average novelty (AN) of a set of ideas is also used as one of the ideation metrics. However, the interdependency between AN and variety has been given little attention. An investigation of the interdependency between these metrics is important to enhance our understanding of the metrics of ideation, and thereby to develop methods for improving ideation effectiveness. This article examines the interdependency between AN and variety. In addition, the metric ‘individual average novelty (IAN)’ has been introduced, and the interdependency between ‘IAN’ and variety has been investigated.

  • High-resolution macromolecular crystallography at the FemtoMAX beamline with time-over-threshold photon detection
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Synchrotron Radiation. - 1600-5775 .- 0909-0495. ; 28, s. 64-70
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Protein dynamics contribute to protein function on different time scales. Ultrafast X-ray diffraction snapshots can visualize the location and amplitude of atom displacements after perturbation. Since amplitudes of ultrafast motions are small, high-quality X-ray diffraction data is necessary for detection. Diffraction from bovine trypsin crystals using single femtosecond X-ray pulses was recorded at FemtoMAX, which is a versatile beamline of the MAX IV synchrotron. The time-over-threshold detection made it possible that single photons are distinguishable even under short-pulse low-repetition-rate conditions. The diffraction data quality from FemtoMAX beamline enables atomic resolution investigation of protein structures. This evaluation is based on the shape of the Wilson plot, cumulative intensity distribution compared with theoretical distribution, I/σ, Rmerge /Rmeas and CC1/2 statistics versus resolution. The FemtoMAX beamline provides an interesting alternative to X-ray free-electron lasers when studying reversible processes in protein crystals.

  • Effects and clinical feasibility of a behavioral treatment for sleep problems in adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) : a pragmatic within-group pilot evaluation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: BMC Psychiatry. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-244X. ; 19, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundSleep disturbances, including insomnia, are common in adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Treatment of choice for insomnia is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-i), but evidence is lacking for CBT-i in patients with ADHD.The purpose of this study was to investigate if patients with insomnia and other sleep problems, at a specialist clinic for ADHD, benefit from a group delivered behavioral treatment based on CBT-i; whether insomnia severity improves following this treatment.MethodsThis pragmatic within-group pilot study with a pre to post and three-month follow-up design was set at a specialist psychiatric out-patient clinic for adult ADHD.As an adjunct to care-as-usual at the clinic, a CBT-i-based group treatment targeting several sleep problems prevalent in the ADHD-population, was offered as 10 weekly 90-min group sessions and scheduled telephone support. All outcome measures were subjectively reported by participants. Data analyzed with dependent t-tests according to intent-to-treat.ResultsNineteen patients (37 [SD 13.7] years; 68% female) with ADHD and subjectively reported sleep problems provided informed consent and pre-treatment measures. Patients had suffered from sleep problems for 15.3 [SD 13.4] years, 42% used sleep medications, 79% used stimulant medication(s).At post-treatment, insomnia severity (Insomnia Severity Index; score range 0-28) had improved with 4.5 points (95% CI, 2.06-6.99, p=.002), at 3months with 6.8 points (95% CI, 4.71-8.91, p<.0001) from pre-treatment.ConclusionsCBT-i adjusted for ADHD is promising for improving insomnia severity in adult patients at specialist psychiatric out-patient clinics, who suffer from ADHD and sleep disturbances.Trial registrationStudy registered with the Regional ethical review board in Stockholm, January 13th 2016, Study id: 2015/2078-31/1. Study registered retrospectively with Clinicaltrials.org, February 21st 2019, ID: NCT03852966.
