  • Skivbolag i Sverige : musikföretagandets 100-åriga institutionalisering
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Record Companies in Sweden- 100 years of music business institutionalisation This thesis is about the development of Record Companies in Sweden over more then hundred years. The Aim is to understand the role of the record company in the change of the music industry by narrating and interpreting its development. The Record Companies did dominate the music industry in Sweden from its birth 1903 until after year 2000, when new forms of music business were born. Despite this the remaining record companies still have similarities with the firs gramophone company from 1903. The empirical story is based on some 20 interviews with central actors in the music industry together with a mapping of the independent music producers, published 2004 and material from other studies on the music business. The story is in it self an important contribution to research since it appears to be the first one done in this way. The conception of the record company as the dominant actor in the organisational field, the music industry, very soon became an institution. This institution has been created and developed in an institutional process that here is analysed in four themes: delimitations, dominant logics, and organising and ownership structure/actors. During the process the limitations for the record company and the organisational field is changing. The logic is being push towards either art or comers during different periods, different forms of organising are created and developed and actors turn up and disappear. A main conclusion is that the cognitive processes highlight the institutionalisation but also the normative and the regulative processes helps to explain. At the same time this must, as in the model developed in the thesis, be connected to the four themes in order to create the holistic understanding of the institutionalization of the music business in Sweden being demanded in the aim of the thesis. In the model the actors are being emphasized as most important in the creation, remaining, developing, changing and at the and also liquidation of the institutional conception of the record company as the dominant form of music business. Partly this could be explained by and in itself explain the lack of a strong common organization in the music business together with the rather limited impact from attempts of regulations. New and old actors are now defined as institutional entrepreneurs as they are creating the new music industry, forcing the record companies to step aside from its dominant role in the same way as the music publishers once did. They might even give the dominance back to the publishers, or maybe there will not bee yet another institution in the music industry or any dominant role. Maybe it will change into something completely different? The model developed and used in this thesis is proposed for use in other longitudinal studies especially in other art businesses and similar organizational fields.

  • Vad betyder kundfokus? : En studie av närhet, kompetens och teknik
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This is a dissertation about customer focus. Customer focus is a concept that can be understood in terms of giving the customer what the customer wants. It has been argued that the industrial society has transformed into a service society with the obvious consequence that services nowadays play a leading part, not at least in regard to customer focus. The customer of today is claimed to have lost interest in mass consumption and is much attracted to personalized and unique solutions, something that results in the fact that businesses must create or develop customer focus, i.e. listen to the customer’s wishes, needs, and demands. According to most researchers in this field, “service excellence” is the primary aspect one firm can use in order to successfully compete with other similar firms. According to Service Management, customer focus is much about developing a personal relationship between the service provider (employee) and the customer. In order to that, the service provider needs to adjust his or hers behaviour in accordance with the customer. This circumstance has a tendency to lead to a “master-and-servant” relation, in which the service provider must obey the various wishes, needs, and demands any customer may have. Most studies on customer focus have been undertaken in the context of low skill service work, but the results have often (implicitly) been generalized to comprise all service work in the whole service sector. As a consequence of this situation, my survey takes on high skill service work (banking and health care). The main purpose of the survey is to examine if the results and analyses, presented from service management apply when the services are not low skill. The results from this survey shows that Service Managements heavily emphasis of the personal relationship between employee and customer – in which the service provider in some meaning need to undertake the role of a servant – can be questioned. The results also show that there is a discrepancy between (bank customers’ and patients’) opinion on an abstract comprehensive level and a specific level where various situations and errands are defined. Further, the dissertation shows that the various factors that can be included in the conception of customer focus, need to be examine more carefully. Some factors integrate in a way that makes it difficult to separate them, and one specific factor can in fact hold a variety of essences.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis comprises five papers discussing two case studies – the mega-event World Championships in Athletics 1995 in Göteborg and the regional festival Storsjöyran in Östersund, Sweden. The study adopts an organisational-theoretical perspective and focus on both intra- and interorganisational aspects of the marketing work. The purpose is to understand the structure and the processes of the organising of the marketing of events, and how renewal of an event is performed. An overview of the literature of marketing events is presented. The literature, however, has a normative and practical orientation – it views the environment as relatively stable and predictable and people as rational and decision-oriented. Instead a theoretical frame of reference was developed, which contains theories on temporary organisations and project networks based on case studies. The result of the study shows that the rationality of the intraorganisational marketing work was action-oriented and emergent rather than decision-oriented and planned. When time is limited, and the environment is complex and changing, action is prioritised over planning. Actors adapted to a changing market and at the same time performed creative renewal of the event in order to produce an attractive event product. Thus, the marketing work was both reactive and proactive. Processes of renewal included various ways of encouraging the emergence of new ideas and creative solutions, such as brain storming, imitation of similar products and influences from the environment. Two processes of renewal was identified – institutionalised and emergent. An important emergent renewal process identified was improvisation. As an idea, the event creates an imaginary space where actors project their imaginations on how the event can fulfil their interests. This space equals the political market square (PSQ) – a metaphor used in this study to understand the inter-organisational marketing of an event. The PSQ adopts a pluralistic frame of reference, i.e. it places emphasis on the diversity of group interests, regards conflict as an inherent characteristic of organisational affairs and regards power as a crucial variable through which conflicts are resolved. The Political Market Square metaphor illustrate the more or less limited access to participating in the marketing of an event and the interaction processes based on conflict and consensus, which, in turn, lead to turbulent or stable change dynamics.

  • Fast amplitude compression in hearing aids improves audibility but degrades speech information transmission
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Common types of hearing impairment are caused mainly by a loss of nearly instantaneous compressive amplification in the inner ear. Therefore, it seems plausible that the loss might be compensated by fast frequency-dependent compression in the hearing aid. We simulated impaired listeners' auditory analysis of hearing-aid processed speech in noise using a functional auditory model. Using hidden Markov signal models, we estimated the mutual information between the phonetic structure of clean speech and the neural output from the auditory model, with fast and slow versions of hearing-aid compression. The long-term speech spectrum of amplified sound was identical in both systems, as specified individually by the widely accepted NAL prescription for the gain frequency response. The calculation showed clearly better speech-to-auditory information transmission with slow quasi-linear amplification than with fast hearing-aid compression, for speech in speech-shaped noise at signal-to-noise ratios ranging from -10 to +20 dB.

  • Affärsstrukturer och entreprenörskap - New Builders
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Habitual entrepreneurs building complex business structures are despite of their importance and media exposure little researched. Our paper has this category in focus and our research questions besides the entrepreneur himself deals with their business structure from the perspectives of organisational structure and accounting practice. Three habitual entrepreneurs are described and analysed, two in Sweden and one in United Kingdom. Analysis is made with help of the metaphor New Builder with the meaning that these persons are primarily building business secondly cleaning in business structures. Results show that these entrepreneurs can be categorised as constantly exploiting business opportunities in line with many other entrepreneurial studies, but can also be categorised as adventures not discussed in earlier research. Business structure created are quite complex and there is tensions based on entrepreneurs seeing synergy while other actors has to deal with the complexity in these structures. Also there is tension in accounting based on entrepreneurs? simple revenue/cost model and the professional accounting norms of accurately measuring several dimensions.

  • New Cleaners : nytt ledarskap med konsekvenser
  • 2006

    •   Change Strategies in Primary School  -  a leader perspective This thesis focuses on change strategies in the Swedish primary school. The schoolleaders have a new situation and role as change agents since the school was brought under local government control with among others the reguirement to be responsible for the local process of development in school. Further studies have the main focus on schoolleaders´ work situation and role, however not on how schoolleaders handle change processes. There are many studies from other organizations that show how important it is that the staff take part in local change processes.  In the decentralized school it is of great interest to have an elucidation of different change strategies and how the schoolleaders´ way to act have effects on the participation of the staff. Empirical data have been collected in case studies. This thesis is a separate part of a more comprehensive research project in Swedish schools, called "The School in change". That project focuses on environmental work in the work organization and includes twelve schools.  Theese schools were chosen depending on their geografical situation and from the point that both the leader and the staff had a clear wish for active work with their working environment, by starting local development projects. Of these schools, I chose three that I wanted to study in another point of view. The research purposes were to describe and understand how schoolleaders, in this case principals, at the primary school work with change strategies. To reach my aim, I chose to study the change strategies of the principals from an actor´s point of view. Semi-structured interviews were conducted at three times and to complete the picture from the answers, I used the observation method. Some data from a staff investigation in the main project "The School in change" has been used in this study, with a view to making the results clear and better understanding them.   The main results from this study are that I am able to identify two different change strategies,  related to the schoolleaders´ way of working with local development in the school organization. One of the schoolleaders has a stationary strategy and two schoolleaders have mobile strategies. They are different in the way that the stationary schoolleader and one of the mobile leaders show a clear own change strategy of their own,  while one schoolleader has an imitated strategy. The results also show that  the leader with her own and stationary strategy, has a growing part of participating staff in ordinary work organization as in local development work. Another result is that in the schools with the mobile leaders the participation decreases. It makes no difference if the leader has her own or an imitated strategy for change and development of the school.   Different kinds of theory have been used to interpret the results. Two aspects have been found important to be able to understand how the leaders of the school act with change strategies. These aspects are the work with the local development and the role and situation of leadership in school.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - New York, NY : Elsevier BV. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 140, s. 232-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We focus on how international research and development (R&D) teams of portfolio entrepreneurs and their management controllers can help to innovate and sustain entrepreneurial activities. An algorithmic decision-making model is implemented that indicates how such portfolio entrepreneurs build complex business structures and create a context for management accounting controllers' information that is suggestive of R&D internationalization challenges. A case study is utilized to compare one large and one medium-sized business conglomerate. Open interviews were conducted with portfolio entrepreneurs and their management controllers. We found that the international R&D teams of portfolio entrepreneurs and their management controllers have different mindsets when assessing sustainable innovative approaches for the existing business and for future expansion through acquisitions. Our findings assert the importance of context when understanding the challenges of management controllers dealing with the internationalization of such R&D efforts.

  • An Information Theoretic Approach to Predict Speech Intelligibility for Listeners with Normal and Impaired Hearing
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: INTERSPEECH 2007. - BAIXAS, FRANCE : ISCA-INST SPEECH COMMUNICATION ASSOC. - 9781605603162 ; , s. 1345-1348
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A computational method to predict speech intelligibility in noisy environments has been developed. By modeling speech and noise as stochastic signals, the information transmission through a given auditory model can be estimated. Rate-distortion theory is then applied to predict speech recognition performance. Results are compared with subjective tests on normal and hearing impaired listeners. It is found that the method underestimates the supra-threshold deficits of hearing impairment, which is believed to be due to an overly simple auditory model and a small dictionary size.

  • Prediction of Speech Recognition in Cochlear Implant Users by Adapting Auditory Models to Psychophysical Data
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Eurasip Journal on Advances in Signal Processing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1687-6172 .- 1687-6180. ; 2009, s. 175243-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Users of cochlear implants (CIs) vary widely in their ability to recognize speech in noisy conditions. There are many factors that may influence their performance. We have investigated to what degree it can be explained by the users' ability to discriminate spectral shapes. A speech recognition task has been simulated using both a simple and a complex models of CI hearing. The models were individualized by adapting their parameters to fit the results of a spectral discrimination test. The predicted speech recognition performance was compared to experimental results, and they were significantly correlated. The presented framework may be used to simulate the effects of changing the CI encoding strategy.

  • Probabilistic Modelling of Hearing : Speech Recognition and Optimal Audiometry
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Hearing loss afflicts as many as 10\% of our population.Fortunately, technologies designed to alleviate the effects ofhearing loss are improving rapidly, including cochlear implantsand the increasing computing power of digital hearing aids. Thisthesis focuses on theoretically sound methods for improvinghearing aid technology. The main contributions are documented inthree research articles, which treat two separate topics:modelling of human speech recognition (Papers A and B) andoptimization of diagnostic methods for hearing loss (Paper C).Papers A and B present a hidden Markov model-based framework forsimulating speech recognition in noisy conditions using auditorymodels and signal detection theory. In Paper A, a model of normaland impaired hearing is employed, in which a subject's pure-tonehearing thresholds are used to adapt the model to the individual. In Paper B, the framework is modified to simulate hearing with acochlear implant (CI). Two models of hearing with CI arepresented: a simple, functional model and a biologically inspiredmodel. The models are adapted to the individual CI user bysimulating a spectral discrimination test. The framework canestimate speech recognition ability for a given hearing impairmentor cochlear implant user. This estimate could potentially be usedto optimize hearing aid settings.Paper C presents a novel method for sequentially choosing thesound level and frequency for pure-tone audiometry. A Gaussianmixture model (GMM) is used to represent the probabilitydistribution of hearing thresholds at 8 frequencies. The GMM isfitted to over 100,000 hearing thresholds from a clinicaldatabase. After each response, the GMM is updated using Bayesianinference. The sound level and frequency are chosen so as tomaximize a predefined objective function, such as the entropy ofthe probability distribution. It is found through simulation thatan average of 48 tone presentations are needed to achieve the sameaccuracy as the standard method, which requires an average of 135presentations.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Organizational Change Management. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0953-4814 .- 1758-7816. ; 21:3, s. 280-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this research paper is to contribute to strategy theory by differentiating different types of top management narratives and trying to understand the interplay between them as well as the dynamics over time.Design/methodology/approach: The study was designed from an interpretative narrative approach. Narratives were produced from deep interviews and organisational documents covering a period of more than 25 years.Findings: Two kinds of narratives were detected – builders and cleaners. The builders' narratives illustrate how personal life‐stories are embedded in the strategic development processes but the cleaners' narratives are organisational stories without personal life‐stories and cover no actual development. The concept meta‐narrative helped to understand strategic changes over time and was embedded in the myth‐periods involved. The meta‐narrative identified was built on an idea of a going concern and on the role to produce physical large objects for long‐term use.Research limitations/implications: Owing to the longitudinal design of the study a cyclical pattern with related managerial narratives were produced. The dichotomy builders and cleaners could be developed studying other longitudinal business strategies and also by connections to meta‐narratives derived from more general economic theories.Practical implications: Builders and cleaners focus on either business or organisational/financial aspects but neither of both. Awareness of this, learning strategic management requires co‐operation between different actors.Originality/value: The longitudinal design describes and analyzes a cyclical pattern of managerial patterns, while other studies based on narratives cover more limited organisational events in time and space.© Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • IT Managers’ Narratives on Subordinates’ Motivation at Work: A Case Study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction (IJTHI). - : IGI Global. - 1548-3908 .- 1548-3916. ; 7:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little is known about managers’ perception of their subordinates’ motivation, especially how this perception influences managerial behavior. This study, conducted in the growing IT consultancy sector, focuses on how IT consultancy first-line managers construct their subordinates’ motivation. Since work motivation is a complex phenomenon, there is variation in how managers reduce this complexity. The empirical data was collected in semi-structured interviews with six team leaders (three female, three male) and are presented as narratives. In their narratives, the female team leaders present a more transformative view of their subordinates while the male managers present a more transactional view. The authors interpret this variation in the narrations as evidence that the issue of subordinate motivation is not seen as strategically important. This interpretation cast doubts on certain assumptions in organizational psychology theory.
