  • 13.6% Efficient Organic Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells by Minimizing Energy Losses of the Excited State

    • The electron-injection energy losses of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are among the fundamental problems hindering their successful breakthrough application. Two triazatruxene (TAT)-based sensitizers, with one containing a flexible Z-type double bond and another a rigid single bond, coded as ZL001 and ZL003, respectively, have been synthesized and applied in DSSCs to probe the energy losses in the process of electron injection. Using time-resolved laser spectroscopic techniques in the kinetic study, ZL003 with the rigid single bond promotes much faster electron injection into the conductive band of TiO2 especially in the locally excited state (hot injection), which leads to higher electron density in TiO2 and a higher V-oc. The devices based on ZL003 exhibited a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.6% with V-oc = 956 mV, J(sc) = 20.73 mA cm(-2), and FF = 68.5%, which are among the highest recorded results to date on single dye-sensitized DSSCs. An independent certified PCE of 12.4% has been obtained for devices based on ZL003.

  • CBL/CAP Is Essential for Mitochondria Respiration Complex I Assembly and Bioenergetics Efficiency in Muscle Cells

    • CBL is rapidly phosphorylated upon insulin receptor activation. Mice whole body CBL depletion improved insulin sensitivity and glucose clearance; however, the precise mechanisms remain unknown. We depleted either CBL or its associated protein SORBS1/CAP independently in myocytes and assessed mitochondrial function and metabolism compared to control cells. CBL- and CAP-depleted cells showed increased mitochondrial mass with greater proton leak. Mitochondrial respiratory complex I activity and assembly into respirasomes were reduced. Proteome profiling revealed alterations in proteins involved in glycolysis and fatty acid degradation. Our findings demonstrate CBL/CAP pathway couples insulin signaling to efficient mitochondrial respiratory function and metabolism in muscle.

  • Past, present, and future geo-biosphere interactions on the Tibetan Plateau and implications for permafrost

    • Interactions between the atmosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere are most active in the critical zone, a region extending from the tops of trees to the top of unweathered bedrock. Changes in one or more of these spheres can result in a cascade of changes throughout the system in ways that are often poorly understood. Here we investigate how past and present climate change have impacted permafrost, hydrology, and ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau. We do this by compiling existing climate, hydrologic, cryosphere, biosphere, and geologic studies documenting change over decadal to glacial-interglacial timescales and longer. Our emphasis is on showing present-day trends in environmental change and how plateau ecosystems have largely flourished under warmer and wetter periods in the geologic past. We identify two future pathways that could lead to either a favorable greening or unfavorable degradation and desiccation of plateau ecosystems. Both paths are plausible given the available evidence. We contend that the key to which pathway future generations experience lies in what, if any, human intervention measures are implemented. We conclude with suggested management strategies that can be implemented to facilitate a future greening of the Tibetan Plateau.

  • Heavy silicone oil versus standard silicone oil in as vitreous tamponade in inferior PVR (HSO Study) : interim analysis

    • PURPOSE: The Heavy Silicone Oil versus Standard Silicone Oil Study (HSO study) is designed to answer the question whether a heavier-than-water tamponade improves the prognosis of eyes with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) of the lower retina.METHODS: The HSO Study is a multicentre, randomized, prospective, controlled clinical trial stratified by surgeon comparing two endotamponades within a two-arm parallel-group design. Patients with inferiorly and posteriorly located PVR grade C-A6 were randomized to either HSO or standard silicone oil as a tamponading agent. The main end-point criteria are complete retinal attachment at 12 months and change in visual acuity (VA) 12 months postoperatively compared to the preoperative VA.RESULTS: Forty-six patients treated with HSO were compared to 47 patients treated with standard silicone oil. There was no difference among the groups regarding baseline data. Three patients in the HSO and five patients in the standard silicone oil group fulfilled intraoperative exclusion criteria. There was no significant difference between both groups regarding anatomical success. Neither noninferiority nor superiority was shown with regard to final acuity.CONCLUSIONS: The HSO Study is the first randomized prospective clinical trial to compare heavy and standard silicone oil in patients with PVR of the lower retina. The intermediate results failed to demonstrate superiority of a heavy tamponade.

  • Chemical Vapor Deposition of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays: Critical Effects of Oxide Buffer Layers

    • Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) were synthesized on different oxide buffer layers using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The growth of the VACNTs was mainly determined by three factors: the Ostwald ripening of catalyst nanoparticles, subsurface diffusion of Fe, and their activation energy for nucleation and initial growth. The surface roughness of buffer layers largely influenced the diameter and density of catalyst nanoparticles after annealing, which apparently affected the lifetime of the nanoparticles and the thickness of the prepared VACNTs. In addition, the growth of the VACNTs was also affected by the deposition temperature, and the lifetime of the catalyst nanoparticles apparently decreased when the deposition temperature was greater than 600 °C due to their serious Ostwald ripening. Furthermore, in addition to the number of catalyst nanoparticles, the density of the VACNTs was also largely dependent on their activation energy for nucleation and initial growth.

    • The ultrafast transient dynamics of a free-base tetraphenylporphyrin (H2TPP) surface-mounted metal organic framework (SURMOF) is spectroscopically characterized and compared with that of H2TPP in ethanol solution. A dramatic increase of the quantum yield of the Soret band fluorescence (S-2 -> S-0) is observed in the H2TPP-SURMOF, which is accompanied by an increase of the S-2 fluorescence lifetime and a broadening of the fluorescence spectra. In contrast, the Q band (S-1) fluorescence is strongly quenched in the H2TPP SURMOF compared with the fluorescence of H(2)TPPin ethanol solution. The observed transient absorption kinetics supports the fluorescence data. The enhanced fluorescence in the SURMOF compared with H2TPP in solution is attributed to the combination of two factors: the alignment of the vibrational energy levels of the dominant Franck-Condon active mode of the Soret and Q bands and the weaker coupling of these modes to the environment.

    • Ordered porphyrin-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) may serve as a model for mimicking the natural photosynthesis with highly ordered chlorophylls, i.e., porphyrin-like chromophores. Study of light harvesting and energy transfer as the primary event of photosynthesis is of great importance leading to improvement of photovoltaics overall performance. Detailed characterization of ultrafast dynamics of zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) surface mounted metal organic framework (SURMOF) is reported by using various steady-state and time-resolved laser spectroscopic techniques, i.e., time correlated single photon counting, fluorescence up-conversion and transient absorption pump-probe with 20 fs resolution. Obtained results in these nanoporous materials were compared with corresponding results for ZnTPP in ethanol measured under the same conditions. Dramatic quenching of both upper excited singlet state S-2 and first excited state SI was observed. Subpicosecond and picosecond lifetimes were detected in transient fluorescence and absorption. Analytical formulas are derived for the linear absorption, steady-state fluorescence, and fluorescence up-conversion signals. Theoretical description excellently reproduces experimental time and frequency resolved signals. Strong quenching of the femtosecond transients in SURMOF is explained in terms of highly efficient Forster resonance energy transfer between the neighboring porphyrin moieties which is caused by a strong spectral overlap of absorption and steady-state fluorescence spectra and quantum coherent energy transfer and redistribution.

    • Singlet fission directly from the upper excited vibrational and electronic states of cofacial perylene dimers, bypassing the relaxed state S-1, was detected within 50 fs. This process competes well with vibrational cooling in S-1 (4.7-7.0 ps) and S-2 -> S-1 internal conversion (380 fs). The singlet fission has the energy threshold E = 3.06 eV. Other competitive relaxation processes are excimer and dimer cation formation on an ultrafast time scale. Excitation to higher energy levels (4.96 eV) leads to a higher efficiency of singlet fission.

  • Global area boom for greenhouse cultivation revealed by satellite mapping

    • Greenhouse cultivation has been expanding rapidly in recent years, yet little knowledge exists on its global extent and expansion. Using commercial and freely available satellite data combined with artificial intelligence techniques, we present a global assessment of greenhouse cultivation coverage and map 1.3 million hectares of greenhouse infrastructures in 2019, a much larger extent than previously estimated. Our analysis includes both large (61%) and small-scale (39%) greenhouse infrastructures. Examining the temporal development of the 65 largest clusters (>1,500 ha), we show a recent upsurge in greenhouse cultivation in the Global South since the 2000s, including a dramatic increase in China, accounting for 60% of the global coverage. We emphasize the potential of greenhouse infrastructures to enhance food security but raise awareness of the uncertain environmental and social implications that may arise from this expansion. We further highlight the gap in spatio-temporal datasets for supporting future research agendas on this critical topic.

    • The Third Pole (TP) is experiencing rapid warming and is currently in its warmest period in the past 2,000 years. This paper reviews the latest development in multidisciplinary TP research associated with this warming. The rapid warming facilitates intense and broad glacier melt over most of the TP, although some glaciers in the northwest are advancing. By heating the atmosphere and reducing snow/ice albedo, aerosols also contribute to the glaciers melting. Glacier melt is accompanied by lake expansion and intensification of the water cycle over the TP. Precipitation has increased over the eastern and northwestern TP. Meanwhile, the TP is greening and most regions are experiencing advancing phenological trends, although over the southwest there is a spring phenological delay mainly in response to the recent decline in spring precipitation. Atmospheric and terrestrial thermal and dynamical processes over the TP affect the Asian monsoon at different scales. Recent evidence indicates substantial roles that mesoscale convective systems play in the TP’s precipitation as well as an association between soil moisture anomalies in the TP and the Indian monsoon. Moreover, an increase in geohazard events has been associated with recent environmental changes, some of which have had catastrophic consequences caused by glacial lake outbursts and landslides. Active debris flows are growing in both frequency of occurrences and spatial scale. Meanwhile, new types of disasters, such as the twin ice avalanches in Ali in 2016, are now appearing in the region. Adaptation and mitigation measures should be taken to help societies’ preparation for future environmental challenges. Some key issues for future TP studies are also discussed.

    • In this work, we have successfully introduced 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) as an efficient p-type dopant for donor-acceptor (D-A) co-polymer poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2ethylhexyl)- 4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b; 3,4-b'] dithiophene)-alt-4,7(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) as an HTM in mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The bulk conductivity is significantly enhanced by 4 orders of magnitude when PCPDTBT is doped with F4TCNQ (6%, w/w). UV-vis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicate the occurrence of p-doping, which results in higher bulk conductivity. The high conductivity leads to an impressive overall efficiency of 15.1%, which is considerably higher than the pristine PCPDTBT based devices (9.2%). The superior performance obtained should be largely attributed to the significant enhancement of the photocurrent density strongly correlated with a more efficient charge collection. This is the highest efficiency reported so far for PCPDTBT-based PSCs. Thus, molecularly p-doping has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy for further improving the performance of a wide range of D-A and other types of polymeric HTMs in PSCs.

  • Expanding the mutation and phenotype spectrum of MYH3-associated skeletal disorders

    • Pathogenic variants in MYH3 cause distal arthrogryposis type 2A and type 2B3 as well as contractures, pterygia and spondylocarpotarsal fusion syndromes types 1A and 1B. These disorders are ultra-rare and their natural course and phenotypic variability are not well described. In this study, we summarize the clinical features and genetic findings of 17 patients from 10 unrelated families with vertebral malformations caused by dominant or recessive pathogenic variants in MYH3. Twelve novel pathogenic variants in MYH3 (NM_002470.4) were identified: three of them were de novo or inherited in autosomal dominant way and nine were inherited in autosomal recessive way. The patients had vertebral segmentation anomalies accompanied with variable joint contractures, short stature and dysmorphic facial features. There was a significant phenotypic overlap between dominant and recessive MYH3-associated conditions regarding the degree of short stature as well as the number of vertebral fusions. All monoallelic variants caused significantly decreased SMAD3 phosphorylation, which is consistent with the previously proposed pathogenic mechanism of impaired canonical TGF-β signaling. Most of the biallelic variants were predicted to be protein-truncating, while one missense variant c.4244T>G,p.(Leu1415Arg), which was inherited in an autosomal recessive way, was found to alter the phosphorylation level of p38, suggesting an inhibition of the non-canonical pathway of TGF-β signaling. In conclusion, the identification of 12 novel pathogenic variants and overlapping phenotypes in 17 affected individuals from 10 unrelated families expands the mutation and phenotype spectrum of MYH3-associated skeletal disorders. We show that disturbances of canonical or non-canonical TGF-β signaling pathways are involved in pathogenesis of MYH3-associated skeletal fusion (MASF) syndrome.
