  • Bidirectional associations of intellectual and social activities with cognitive function among middle-aged and elderly adults in China
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Affective Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-0327. ; 319, s. 83-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Previous studies evaluating the association between leisure activities and cognitive function produced conflicting results. Different types of leisure activities may have different effects on cognition, and very few studies have explored their bidirectional associations. Our study aimed to explore whether intellectual and social activities had bidirectional associations with cognitive function among the middle-aged and elderly adults in China. Methods: Data was derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The data in this study were based on 11,549 participants aged 45 or older whose intellectual and social activities and cognitive function were assessed at baseline. Cross-lagged panel model was used to examine the temporal relationship of intellectual and social activities with cognitive function. Results: Totally, 5624 participants completed the third follow-up in 2018. The results showed that the better the cognitive function they had at baseline, the more intellectual activities they were engage in (β = 0.044, P < 0.001) and vice versa (β = 0.042, P = 0.001). Additionally, better cognitive function at baseline was significantly associated with more engagement in social activities (β = 0.028, P = 0.030); in contrast, higher engagement in social activities at baseline was not related to better cognitive function (β = −0.008, P = 0.523). Limitations: Engagement in social and intellectual activities was assessed via questionnaire. Conclusions: Our findings indicated that there was a bidirectional relationship between intellectual activities and cognitive function. However, participation in social activities did not slow down the decline in cognitive function. Participating in intellectual activities, compared to social activities, is especially beneficial for cognitive function.

  • Prevalence of Abdominal Obesity in Chinese Middle-Aged and Older Adults with a Normal Body Mass Index and Its Association with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : A Nationally Representative Cohort Study from 2011 to 2018
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity: Targets and Therapy. - 1178-7007. ; 14, s. 4829-4841
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Few studies have focused on the prevalence of abdominal obesity in Chinese middle-aged and older adults with a normal body mass index (BMI). Furthermore, it is still unclear whether abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Participants with a normal BMI are usually neglected during assessments of abdominal obesity-associated T2DM risk since the current recommendations for medical interventions are mainly focused on overall body mass index rather than fat deposition patterns. Methods: In this study, 7942 normal-BMI participants aged over 45 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included to assess the prevalence of abdominal obesity defined by waist circumference (WC) or waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). In addition, 4348 normal-BMI individuals with no diabetes at baseline were included to evaluate the association between abdominal obesity and the risk of T2DM with the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The prevalence (95% confidence interval, CI) of increased WC and substantially increased WC among adults with a normal BMI was 22.0% (21.1%-22.9%) and 18.1% (17.3%-19.0%), respectively. The adjusted hazard ratios and 95% CIs for T2DM incidence were 1.39 (1.05–1.85) and 1.89 (1.42–2.53) for those with increased WC and substantially increased WC, respectively, compared to the individuals with a normal WC. Similar HRs were obtained for the association between WHtR and the risk of T2DM. In prediabetic patients, the HRs (95% CIs) for new-onset T2DM for those with increased WC and substantially increased WC were 1.85 (1.27–2.69) and 2.46 (1.67–3.61), respectively, when compared with individuals with normal WC. This positive association was observed in women but not in men or adults with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). Conclusion: Abdominal obesity is highly prevalent among middle-aged and older Chinese adults with a normal BMI, and maintaining a normal waist circumference may be beneficial in the prevention of T2DM.

  • Inheritance patterns of the transcriptome in hybrid chickens and their parents revealed by expression analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although many phenotypic traits of chickens have been well documented, the genetic patterns of gene expression levels in chickens remain to be determined. In the present study, we crossed two chicken breeds, White Leghorn (WL) and Cornish (Cor), which have been selected for egg and meat production, respectively, for a few hundred years. We evaluated transcriptome abundance in the brain, muscle, and liver from the day-old progenies of pure-bred WL and Cor, and the hybrids of these two breeds, by RNA-Seq in order to determine the inheritance patterns of gene expression. Comparison among expression levels in the different groups revealed that most of the genes showed conserved expression patterns in all three examined tissues and that brain had the highest number of conserved genes, which indicates that conserved genes are predominantly important compared to others. On the basis of allelic expression analysis, in addition to the conserved genes, we identified the extensive presence of additive, dominant (Cor dominant and WL dominant), over-dominant, and under-dominant genes in all three tissues in hybrids. Our study is the first to provide an overview of inheritance patterns of the transcriptome in layers and broilers, and we also provide insights into the genetics of chickens at the gene expression level.

  • Enhanced Metal-Insulator Transition in Freestanding VO2 Down to 5 nm Thickness
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 13:14, s. 16688-16693
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultrathin freestanding membranes with a pronounced metal-insulator transition (MIT) have huge potential for future flexible electronic applications as well as provide a unique aspect for the study of lattice-electron interplay. However, the reduction of the thickness to an ultrathin region (a few nm) is typically detrimental to the MIT in epitaxial films, and even catastrophic for their freestanding form. Here, we report an enhanced MIT in VO2-based freestanding membranes, with a lateral size up to millimeters and the VO2 thickness down to 5 nm. The VO2 membranes were detached by dissolving a Sr3Al2O6 sacrificial layer between the VO2 thin film and the c-Al2O3(0001) substrate, allowing the transfer onto arbitrary surfaces. Furthermore, the MIT in the VO2 membrane was greatly enhanced by inserting an intermediate Al2O3 buffer layer. In comparison with the best available ultrathin VO2 membranes, the enhancement of MIT is over 400% at a 5 nm VO2 thickness and more than 1 order of magnitude for VO2 above 10 nm. Our study widens the spectrum of functionality in ultrathin and large-scale membranes and enables the potential integration of MIT into flexible electronics and photonics.

  • Numerical Reconstruction of Cyclist Impact Accidents : Can Helmets Protect the Head-Neck of Cyclists?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Biomimetics. - : MDPI AG. - 2313-7673. ; 8:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyclists are vulnerable road users and often suffer head-neck injuries in car–cyclist accidents. Wearing a helmet is currently the most prevalent protection method against such injuries. Today, there is an ongoing debate about the ability of helmets to protect the cyclists’ head-neck from injury. In the current study, we numerically reconstructed five real-world car–cyclist impact accidents, incorporating previously developed finite element models of four cyclist helmets to evaluate their protective performances. We made comparative head-neck injury predictions for unhelmeted and helmeted cyclists. The results show that helmets could clearly lower the risk of severe (AIS 4+) brain injury and skull fracture, as assessed by the predicted head injury criterion (HIC), while a relatively limited decrease in AIS 4+ brain injury risk can be achieved in terms of the analysis of CSDM0.25. Assessment using the maximum principal strain (MPS0.98) and head impact power (HIP) criteria suggests that helmets could lower the risk of diffuse axonal injury and subdural hematoma of the cyclist. The helmet efficacy in neck protection depends on the impact scenario. Therefore, wearing a helmet does not seem to cause a significant neck injury risk level increase to the cyclist. Our work presents important insights into the helmet’s efficacy in protecting the head-neck of cyclists and motivates further optimization of protective equipment.

  • Development and validation of risk prediction models for new-onset type 2 diabetes in adults with impaired fasting glucose
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-8227. ; 197
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: To develop and validate sex-specific risk prediction models based on easily obtainable clinical data for predicting 5-year risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among individuals with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and generate practical tools for public use. Methods: The data used for model training and internal validation came from a large prospective cohort (N = 18,384). Two independent cohorts were used for external validation. A two-step approach was applied to screen variables. Coefficient-based models were constructed by multivariate Cox regression analyses, and score-based models were subsequently generated. The predictive power was evaluated by the area under the curve (AUC). Results: During a median follow-up of 7.55 years, 5697 new-onset T2D cases were identified. Predictor variables included age, body mass index, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting plasma glucose, and fatty liver. The proposed models outperformed five existing models. In internal validation, the AUCs of the coefficient-based models were 0.741 (95% CI 0.723–0.760) for men and 0.762 (95% CI 0.720–0.802) for women. External validation yielded comparable prediction performance. We finally constructed a risk scoring system and a web calculator. Conclusions: The risk prediction models and derived tools had well-validated performance to predict the 5-year risk of T2D in IFG adults.

  • Synthesis, structural characterization, and thermal properties of Ca- and La-doped soda-lime glasses by laser melting
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Glass Science. - : American Ceramic Society. - 2041-1286 .- 2041-1294. ; 11:4, s. 699-706
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laser melting techniques have been used in the preparation of unconventional glasscompositions with high melting temperatures. Thus, we wanted to test the feasibilityof using a CO2 laser in the preparation of nitrogen-rich oxynitride glasses and nitridesilicate glasses. Melting from oxides and metallic raw materials, we wanted to studyfirst glass formation and possible evaporation losses of the glass components. Twoglass series were prepared and studied for their structure and thermal properties, onewith Ca2+- and a higher melting La3+-doped soda-lime-silicate (SLS) series. In lessthan 3 minutes of laser melting, spheres of up to 6 mm diameter were successfullyfabricated. The obtained glass samples were homogeneous and transparent in thevisible region. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic analysis confirmed theamorphous nature of the synthesized samples. Sodium losses increase as calcium isadded to the soda-lime-silicate glass. As expected, increasing Ca2+ or La3+ additionlead to increased depolymerization of the silicate network. Moreover, the increasesin Tg with the addition of Ca2+ or La3+ ions indicating strengthening of the sodalime-silicate glass by increasing strength of the M-O bonds of divalent and trivalentions over monovalent sodium ions, weak Na-O bonds also resulting in significantevaporation loss during the short laser melting times. The thermal stability decreasesupon addition of Ca2+ or La3+ ions to the soda-lime-silicate glasses.

  • Phase Transitions of Oppositely Charged Colloidal Particles Driven by Alternating Current Electric Field
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 15:2, s. 2363-2373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study systems containing oppositely charged colloidal particles under applied alternating current electric fields (AC fields) using overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations in three dimensions. We obtain jammed bands perpendicular to the field direction under intermediate frequencies and lanes parallel with the field under low frequencies. These structures also depend upon the particle charges. The pathway for generating jammed bands follows a stepwise mechanism, and intermediate bands are observed during lane formation in some systems. We investigate the component of the pressure tensors in the direction parallel to the field and observe that the jammed to lane transition occurs at a critical value for this pressure. We also find that the stable steady states appear to satisfy the principle of maximum entropy production. Our results may help to improve the understand of the underlying mechanisms for these types of dynamic phase transitions and the subsequent cooperative assemblies of colloidal particles under such non-equilibrium conditions.

  • Gene-Viral Cancer Therapy Using Dual-Regulated Oncolytic Adenovirus with Antiangiogenesis Gene for Increased Efficacy.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Molecular Cancer Research. - 1557-3125. ; 6, s. 568-575
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conditionally replicative adenovirus (CRAD) represents a promising approach for cancer therapy. Several CRADs controlled by the human telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter have been developed. However, because of their replicative capacity, the importance of cancer specificity for CRADs needs to be further emphasized. In this study, we have developed a novel dual-regulated CRAD, CNHK500-mE, which has its E1a and E1b gene controlled by the human telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter and the hypoxia response element, respectively. It also carries a mouse endostatin expression cassette controlled by the cytomegalovirus promoter. These properties allow for increased cancer cell targeting specificity and decreased adverse side effects. We showed that CNHK500-mE preferentially replicated in cancer cells. Compared with a replication-defective vector carrying the same endostatin expression cassette, CNHK500-mE-mediated transgene expression level was markedly increased via viral replication within cancer cells. In the nasopharyngeal tumor xenograft model, CNHK500-mE injection resulted in antitumor efficacy at day 7 after therapy. Three weeks later, it led to significant inhibition of xenograft tumor growth due to the combined effects of viral oncolytic therapy and antiangiogenesis gene therapy. Pathologic examination showed that most cancer cells were positive for adenoviral capsid protein and for apoptotic terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling in the CNHK500-mE-treated tumor tissues, and the microvessels in these tumor tissues were diminished in quantity and abnormal in morphology. These results suggest that, as a potential cancer therapeutic agent, the CNHK500-mE is endowed with higher specificity to cancer cells and low cytotoxicity to normal cells. • Battery management system (BMS) is essential for the safety and longevity of lithium-ion battery (LIB) utilization. With the rapid development of new sensing techniques, artificial intelligence and the availability of huge amounts of battery operational data, data-driven battery management has attracted ever-widening attention as a promising solution. This review article overviews the recent progress and future trend of data-driven battery management from a multi-level perspective. The widely-explored data-driven methods relying on routine measurements of current, voltage, and surface temperature are reviewed first. Within a deeper understanding and at the microscopic level, emerging management strategies with multi-dimensional battery data assisted by new sensing techniques have been reviewed. Enabled by the fast growth of big data technologies and platforms, the efficient use of battery big data for enhanced battery management is further overviewed. This belongs to the upper and the macroscopic level of the data-driven BMS framework. With this endeavor, we aim to motivate new insights into the future development of next-generation data-driven battery management.

  • Real-time Reconfiguration-Based All-Cell Flexibility and Capacity Maximum Utilization of Second-Life Batteries
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification. - 2332-7782. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The capacity underutilization caused by cell inconsistency hinders the efficient utilization of lithium-ion battery packs. This is particularly critical for the second-life battery utilization where high cell inconsistency exists. To address this issue, this paper proposes a multi-scale reconfiguration control method enabled by an efficient reconfigurable battery topology, aiming to maximize the pack’s capacity utilization. In this regard, a novel 4-switch reconfigurable battery topology is proposed, offering the advantages of all-cell flexibility and reasonable complexity. Building upon this, an all-cell equalization method is proposed, combining intra-module current sharing and three forms of inter-module energy distribution to achieve maximum pack capacity utilization. Moreover, real-time reconfiguration ensures effective charge transmission when the pack voltage deviates from the expected threshold. A lab-scale prototype of the reconfigurable battery pack is tested, and experimental results confirm that the proposed design and reconfiguration control can improve pack capacity utilization and efficiency by 10.96% and 14.34%, respectively, without any redundant design. This method provides a feasible solution for grouping and system management of second-life battery systems consisting of highly inconsistent cells.
