Linguistically based scales for assessment of young students’ writing

- This study addresses the question of how different aspects of students’ writing achievement can be recognised and evaluated. We developed a linguistically based framework for criteria-based assessment, anchored in a functional view of language and language learning. The framework was used to determine what traits characterise texts at different Proficiency Groups based on comparative judgement and what traits characterise texts assessed differently. Altogether, 100 texts (written by students ages 6–9) representing four text genres were assessed and ranked using both comparative judgement (holistic assessment) and criteria-based analysis. The results indicate that texts generally are assessed as stronger (i.e., placed in a higher Proficiency Group) when comparative judgement is used than what the assessment of a specific language resource indicates. The results also indicate that assessment differences might be a result of different quality expectations for different genres. This points towards the need for genre- and subject-specific assessment criteria to scaffold students in their emergent disciplinary writing development.

- Scandinavian writing research forms a relatively new field, with an increased num-ber of studies conducted in the last two decades. In this qualitative synthesis review of 87 peer reviewed journal articles from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden published between 2010 and 2020, the aim was to outline the landscape of current educational writing research from the region. The sample included research articles published in both Scandinavian and international journals. Our analysis focused on the articles' research approaches and main themes regarding the object of investigation. The main themes identified were Writing Instruction, Writing Assessment, and Students' Text. We found a predominance of studies conducted in the context of language arts/first language (L1) education, concerning either disciplinary or general aspects of writing. We also found a predominance of approaches based on either sociocul-tural or social semiotic theory. Furthermore, a majority of the reviewed studies were explorative and small-scale, and, for the Writing Assessment studies in particular, directed at the secondary stages of school. The results suggest a call for future studies focusing on writing interventions and studies deploying a wide range of method-ological approaches, as well as studies based on inter-Scandinavian collaborations across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

- We report on results from using the multi-variate readability model SVIT to classify texts into various levels. We investigate how the language features integrated in the SVIT model can be transformed to values on known criteria like vocabulary, grammatical fluency and propositional knowledge. Such text criteria, sensitive to content , readability and genre in combination with the profile of a student's reading ability form the base of individually adapted texts. The procedure of levelling texts into different stages of complexity is presented along with results from the first cycle of tests conducted on 8th grade students. The results show that SVIT can be used to classify texts into different complexity levels.

- We report results from ongoing research on developing sophisticated measures for assessing a student's reading ability and a tool for the student and teacher to create a profile of this ability. In the project we will also investigate how these measures can be transformed to values on known criteria like vocabulary, grammatical fluency and so forth, and how these can be used to analyse texts. Such text criteria, sensitive to content, readability and genre in combination with the profile of a student's reading ability will form the base to individually adapted texts. Techniques and tools will be developed for selecting suitable texts, automatic summarisation of texts and automatic transformation to easy-to-read Swedish.

- A slight decrease in Swedish students’ reading ability has recently been shown in national as well as international reading tests, e.g. PIRLS 2006. It is thus of great importance to refine the knowledge of what type of reading comprehension Swedish students at the four different levels of the international benchmarks are able to carry out. This is therefore the overall purpose of this study. Another purpose is to create a theoretical framework and a method for keeping track within a qualitative perspective of changes in students’ reading comprehension by e.g. studying trends in PIRLS. Reading comprehension is in this study discussed in terms of ‘text movability’. This is a notion inspired by the work of several researchers, e.g. Langer (1995) and her identification of four different ways of moving in a text in order to build an envisionment or a mental textworld. The results show that it is quite common that many students, even those at the low international benchmark, manage to get one point in a complex constructed response question. But very few manage to get two or three points, even though the only extra load in some questions is to find the answers at two or more different locations in the text. This would be of great interest to compare in an international context. Another result is that some of the Swedish students especially at the low and intermediate international benchmark have a broader repertoire of reading ability than expected.

- Det finns än i dag inte mycket forskat kring hur lärare för de tidiga skolåren samtalar om barns skrivande av berättande texter. Därför vill vi med den här studien bidra till ökade insikter genom att undersöka hur lågstadielärare förändrar sitt sätt att tala om elevers berättande texter efter en kortare fortbildning kring sådana språkliga resurser, som tidigare forskning pekar ut som viktiga att lyfta i skrivundervisningen. Resultaten visar att lärarna i fortbildningen breddar sin repertoar av språkliga resurser som rör narratologiska aspekter, om än i olika grad beroende på vilken typ av elevtext de talar om. Det ligger i linje med tidigare forskning som visar på lärares vana och vilja att använda litterärt metaspråk vilket de kopplar till kreativitet, medan det grammatiska metaspråket kopplas till regler och restriktioner. Lärarna blir också mer precisa i sina uttalanden genom att oftare dels använda formellt metaspråk, dels ge exempel från de elevtexter de diskuterar. Resultaten bidrar således med underlag för fortsatta diskussioner om vad som behöver betonas inom fortbildning och lärarutbildning och understryker betydelsen av långsiktighet inom sådan utbildning. Studien ger också underlag för diskussioner om synsätt på elevers tidiga skrivande i undervisningen, styrdokument och läromedel.

I förgrunden ställs centrala språkliga förmågor som intresse och motivation för att läsa och skriva, läs- och skrivförståelse samt av- och inkodning. De här dimensionerna av läs- och skrivutvecklingen bildar förgrund och är beroende av bakgrunden som utgörs av de texter man får möta och i vilka sammanhang de här mötena sker. Artikeln avslutas med en betraktelse över ett utökat läraruppdrag som en konsekvens av vad vi idag vet om läs- och skrivutveckling.
