  • An updated classification for the hyper‐diverse genus Corydalis (Papaveraceae: Fumarioideae) based on phylogenomic and morphological evidence
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Integrative Plant Biology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1672-9072 .- 1744-7909. ; 65:9, s. 2138-2156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The genus Corydalis, with ca. 530 species, has long been considered taxonomically challenging because of its great variability. Previous molecular analyses, based on a few molecular markers and incomplete taxonomic sampling, were clearly inadequate to delimit sections and subgenera. We have performed phylogenetic analyses of Corydalis and related taxa, using 65 shared protein-coding plastid genes from 313 accessions (including 280 samples of ca. 226 species of Corydalis) and 152 universal low-copy nuclear genes from 296 accessions (including 271 samples of Corydalis) covering all 42 previously recognized sections and five independent “series”. Phylogenetic trees were inferred using Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood. Eight selected morphological characters were estimated using ancestral state reconstructions. Results include: (i) of the three subgenera of Corydalis, two are fully supported by both the plastid and nuclear data; the third, subg. Cremnocapnos, is weakly supported by plastid DNA only, whereas in the nuclear data the two included sections form successive outgroups to the rest of the genus; (ii) among all 42 sections and five “series”, 25 sections and one “series” are resolved as monophyletic in both data sets; (iii) the common ancestor of Corydalis is likely to be a perennial plant with a taproot, yellow flowers with a short saccate spur, linear fruits with recurved fruiting pedicels, and seeds with elaiosomes; (iv) we provide a new classification of Corydalis with four subgenera (of which subg. Bipapillatae is here newly described), 39 sections, 16 of which are consistent with the previous classification, 16 sections have been recircumscribed, one section has been reinstated and six new sections are established. Characters associated with lifespan, underground structures, floral spur, fruit and elaiosomes are important for the recognition of subgenera and sections. These new phylogenetic analyses combined with ancestral character reconstructions uncovered previously unrecognized relationships, and greatly improved our understanding of the evolution of the genus.

  • Corydalis sunhangii (Papaveraceae) : A new species from Xizang, China, based on plastome and morphological data
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2045-7758. ; 14:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new species of Papaveraceae, Corydalis sunhangii, in the section Trachycarpae, is described and illustrated from Nyingchi City, Xizang, China. The new species has some resemblance to Corydalis kingdonis, but differs by radical leaves prominent, usually several, blade tripinnate (vs. insignificant, few, blade bi- to triternate); cauline leaf usually one, much smaller than radical leaves, usually situated in lower half of stem (vs. usually two, larger than radical leaves, concentrated in upper third of stem); racemes densely 13-35-flowered (vs. rather lax, 4-11-flowered); claw of lower petal shallowly saccate (vs. very prominently and deeply saccate); capsule oblong, with raised lines of dense papillae (vs. broadly obovoid, smooth). Phylogenetic analysis, based on 68 protein-coding plastid genes of 49 samples, shows that C. sunhangii is not closely related to any hitherto described species, which is consistent with our morphological analysis.

  • Three new species of Corydalis (Fumariaceae) from northwestern Sichuan China
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Novon. - : Missouri Botanical Garden Press. - 1055-3177 .- 1945-6174. ; 18:3, s. 330-335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The jiuding Ridge (Sichuan, China) has been explored during the past several years by a team from chengdu Institute of Biology. Chinese Academy of Sciences, and three undescribed species of Corydalis DC. (Fumariaceae) have been revealed and are apparently endemic to this mountain. The new species were observed in forest (C. capitata X.F. Cao, Liden & Y.W. Wang), and alpine rocky limestone areas (C. schistostigma X.F. Cao, Liden, Y.W. Wang & Y.L. Peng). The two first species have their closest relatives in the Wolong-Balangshan District in the Wolong-Balangshan District (Wenchuan. Sichuan). Corydalis aeaeae differs from C. panada Liden & Y.W. Wang in its small size, few-flowered racemes, and broadly obtuse outer petals with low, short erests. Corydalis capitata differs from the C. flexuosa Franchet complex in the capitate racemes, small flowers with deeply serrate petals, and the peculiar, thin, strictly ecect lateral branches. corydalis schistostinma is unique in the C. curviflora Maximowicz ex Hemsley group, in the deeply cleft stigma and very forward-projecting crests to the inner petals, and possibly has iits affinities more to the north and northwest in the Hengduan Mountains.

  • 193 and 246 of Philosophia botanica do not support that Linnaeus was a "typologist"
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Taxon. - : WILEY. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 69:2, s. 213-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • 193 and 246 of Linnaeus's Philosophia botanica have recently been invoked to suggest that Linnaeus used, or even introduced, the "Method of Type", which implies that a genus is centred around a "typical" species. However, there is no support for this conclusion in either of the two paragraphs, rather the opposite. A recapitulation of the last twenty years' reassessment of Linnaeus's taxonomic philosophy is given.

  • Dionysia (Primulaceae) : the Cushion Primroses
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dionysia comprises 64 species of aromatic dwarf shrubs growing in crevices of steep or often overhanging rocks in semi-arid areas. Most species form cushions, and are covered in violet or yellow flowers in spring. They are restricted to the South-central part of the Irano-Turanian floristic region, ± corresponding to the Flora Iranica area. Several species have been used since antiquity for medicine and incense. Until the late 19th century, the drug Hamámá (Dionysia diapensiifolia) was marketed in India as an ingredient in various panaceas. It most likely corresponds to the most precious of the three kinds of ἄμωμον (latin Amomum) recorded by Dioscorides in the first century. Dionysia is a natural taxon, its monophyly well supported by DNA evidence. It is distinguished from related taxa by the apomorphies: shrubby habit with elongated woody branches, very dense amorphous burgundy or dark amber “bark”, woolly farina and ovules embedded in a fleshy placenta. The ancestral Dionysia was rock-growing with fairly large dentate leaves with revolute leaf vernation, stalked inflorescences with tiers of verticillate flowers subtended by foliaceous bracts, long-tubed yellow corollas, and many-seeded capsules (save for revolute leaf vernation, these characters are shared with the sister taxon Evotrochis). Changes to tighter cushions, small leaves, small bracts, sessile flowers, few-seeded capsules and large seeds occurred in parallel in several lineages. Like most species in the Primula group, all Dionysia species are heterostylous and obligately out-crossing, except for D. involucrata (homostylous) and D. teucrioides (mixed). Large phenotypic variation within populations, as well as in cultivated plants from single-mother seed batches, has been documented in many cases. The bulk of this book is a taxonomic treatment of Dionysia, with nomenclature, descriptions, distribution maps, photos and line drawings. The subgeneric classification is based on clearly recognizable natural entities. The enigmatic section Tapetodes is shown to be of hybridogeneous origin, based on DNA and morphology. Twelve new taxa (1 section, 9 species, 2 subspecies) are described: Dionysia sect. Primulopsis, D. tjeerdsmae, D. juniperina, D. mariae, D. moazzenii, D. revoluta ssp. ericoides, D. brinkii, D. gaubae ssp. nodosa, D. mallos, D. bokharii, D. crassifolia, D. alipourii. Four stat. and/or comb. nov. are made (D. sect. Tapetodes, D. involucrata ssp. gandzhinae, D. cespitosa ssp. isophylla and D. odora ssp. zeynepiae). Dionysia wendelboi and D. odora ssp. straussii are rehabilitated. The older name D. drabifolia replaces D. termeana, and D. bachtiarica is shown to be the correct name for “D. sawyeri” sensu Wendelbo, non Primula sawyeri G.Watt, nom. rej. prop., q.e. D. archibaldii. There are also overviews on morphology, phylogeny, biogeography, chemistry and scientific history, and finally advice on how to grow and propagate Dionysia, the latter largely informed by Marika Irvine from Göteborgs botaniska trädgård.

  • Flowers of the Se La : Alpine plants of NW Arunachal Pradesh
  • 2020
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arunachal Pradesh in NE India, the land of the rising sun, is a Paradise for botanists, still largely unexplored. In the west part of the state, the Se La straddles the Himalayan range at 4200 metres above sea level. Being the only alpine area in Arunachal accessible by road, it is far better known than the high elevations of the central and east parts of the state. Despite this, numerous novelties have been discovered in the past decade: species new to Arunachal Pradesh, to India or to science (one of them described herein). Certainly additional novelties will turn up with more research. This book aims to satisfy the need for a quick reference guide to the flora of the Se La, that will benefit students, researchers, tourists and budding botanists of the region. It depicts in colour 280 species in 128 genera of vascular plants, with emphasis on summer- and autumn-flowering herbs. Woody plants, ferns and grasses are poorly represented.
