  • Templated Growth of Covalently Bonded Three-Dimensional Carbon Nanotube Networks Originated from Graphene
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 24:12, s. 1576-1581
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A template-assisted method that enables the growth of covalently bonded three-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) originating from graphene at a large scale is demonstrated. Atomic force microscopy-based mechanical tests show that the covalently bonded CNT structure can effectively distribute external loading throughout the network to improve the mechanical strength of the material.

  • LCOE distribution of PV for single-family dwellings in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Reports. - 2352-4847. ; 10, s. 1951-1967
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, the installations of solar photovoltaic systems are growing rapidly, and especially the market segment of small-scale distributed systems is experiencing positive growth. The current installation volumes exceed the expectations of the Swedish authorities. This study presents an up-to-date assessment of the levelized cost of electricity to be used for both agencies in their long-term scenario work of PV development and for private investors for estimating the upfront and future costs and risks associated with photovoltaic systems. The analysis is based on the turnkey system cost of 6,098 single-family dwelling photovoltaic systems commissioned in Sweden between the 1st of January 2019 and 1st of July 2020. The statistics of system investments costs are complemented by literature studies and by interviews of relevant stakeholders for the other input parameters needed to calculate the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). A Monte Carlo analysis was applied on all the input parameters provides relevant insight into the range of LCOE values. The unsubsidized levelized cost of electricity for most systems ranged from 0.85 SEK/kWh (25th percentile) to 1.15 SEK/kWh (75th percentile), with a mean at 1.02 SEK/kWh at reasonable real discount rate of 2%, but that extreme values can reach 0.30 SEK/kWh at a 0% discount rate and 5.70 SEK/kWh at a 5% discount rate. Taking into account the current (2023) Swedish tax reduction for investment in green technologies that amounts to an effective deduction of 19.4% of the total system investment costs lowers the LCOE to mean at 0.82 SEK/kWh at real discount rate of 2%. The LCOE for single-family dwelling photovoltaic systems are generally lower than the assumed LCOE in long-term scenario studies of the Swedish electricity system. This finding helps to explain to the authorities the unexpected fast deployment of distributed photovoltaic systems in Sweden.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The appendix introduces our empirical study of the coalition life cycle.  The structure of each country chapter is based on six core tables, each one capturing a major stage in the coalition life cycle.  In the book chapters, the tables help structure the analysis and provide wealth of information and details of the coalition cycle. Nevertheless, the book chapters and this appendix only present a sample of the data and information that we have collected for this research project. For reasons of space, we have had to limit the presentation in the book chapters in terms of time-periods and variables. This appendix presents many more details that are important for readers who are not familiar with the definitions used in coalition research or interested in how particular variables where measured. In addition to the definitions and measurements presented in this appendix, all the data and all the variables are presented in an on-line data appendix at www.erdda.org.

  • Kinetics of the low-pressure chemical vapor deposited tungsten nitride process using tungsten hexafluoride and ammonia precursors
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology A. - : American Vacuum Society. - 1520-8559 .- 0734-2101. ; 39:6, s. 063403-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tungsten nitride (WNx) is a hard refractory material with low electrical resistance that can be deposited using multiple methods. This study focuses on the microstructrual development of low pressure chemical vapor deposition grown WNx coatings. Also, the growth kinetics is studied and discussed in terms of the resulting microstructures. Samples of WNx were deposited using WF6, NH3, and Ar at 592–887 K in a hot-wall reactor with variable gas mixture compositions (NH3:WF6 = 0.5–25). The coatings were nitrogen-rich (x ∼ 1.65) and oxygen-free as determined by time-of-flight-elastic recoil detection analysis. X-ray diffraction showed that the coatings transformed from being amorphous to crystallizing as β-W2N at 641–690 K. The morphologies changed with deposition temperature. Being very fine grained and nodular at deposition temperatures 740 K and below, increasing the deposition temperature to 789 K while employing a NH3:WF6 molar ratio of 1, large disc-shaped protrusions were formed. When increasing the NH3:WF6 molar ratio to 25, striped facets became increasingly dominant. Investigating the latter by transmission electron microscopy, a microstructure of smaller ridges formed by twinning, oriented as <211> in the out-of-plane direction, was revealed across the facet surfaces. Transmission Kikuchi diffraction confirmed that <211> was the texture of these coatings. The partial reaction order of WF6 and NH3 at 740 K was determined to be close to 1/6 and 1/2, respectively. The apparent activation energy ranged from 82 to 12 kJ/mol corresponding to deposition temperatures from 592 to 887 K.

  • Sweden : the rise and fall of block politics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Coalition governance in Western Europe. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780198868484 ; , s. 574-610
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter examines coalition formation and coalition governance in Sweden. Swedish coalition politics have historically been characterized by a near-unidimensional political conflict along the left-right policy dimension, along with minority government rule (and a high share of minority cabinets). This remains unchanged over the last three decades. In addition, Swedish politics has long been characterized by "two-bloc politics", where the socialist and the non-socialist bloc have competed for power. However, the growing electoral successes for the populist radical right party, the Sweden Democrats, has recently and at least temporary, ended this. Although, the increasing fragmentation and polarisation of Swedish politics has made bargaining over government more difficult, it has not changed how coalition cabinets work and the existing practices of coalition governance since early 1990s remains intact. Collegiality and consensus are still the dominant characteristics of Swedish coalition governance.

  • Soft X-ray characterization of Zn1-xSnxOy electronic structure for thin film photovoltaics
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 14:29, s. 10154-10159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zinc tin oxide (Zn1-xSnxOy) has been proposed as an alternative buffer layer material to the toxic, and light narrow-bandgap CdS layer in CuIn1-x,GaxSe2 thin film solar cell modules. In this present study, synchrotron-based soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies have been employed to probe the densities of states of intrinsic ZnO, Zn1-xSnxOy and SnOx thin films grown by atomic layer deposition. A distinct variation in the bandgap is observed with increasing Sn concentration, which has been confirmed independently by combined ellipsometry-reflectometry measurements. These data correlate directly to the open circuit potentials of corresponding solar cells, indicating that the buffer layer composition is associated with a modification of the band discontinuity at the CIGS interface. Resonantly excited emission spectra, which express the admixture of unoccupied O 2p with Zn 3d, 4s, and 4p states, reveal a strong suppression in the hybridization between the O 2p conduction band and the Zn 3d valence band with increasing Sn concentration.

  • Atomic layer deposition of zinc tin oxide buffer layers for Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to provide an in-depth investigation of zinc tin oxide, Zn1-xSnxOy or ZTO, grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a buffer layer in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells. The thesis analyzes how changes in the ALD process influence the material properties of ZTO, and how these in turn affect the performance of CIGS solar cells. It is shown that ZTO grows uniformly and conformably on CIGS and that the interface between ZTO and CIGS is sharp with little or no interdiffusion between the layers. The band gap and conduction band energy level of ZTO are dependent both on the [Sn]/([Zn]+[Sn]) composition and on the deposition temperature. The influence by changes in composition is non-trivial, and the highest band gap and conduction band energy level are obtained at a [Sn]/([Zn]+[Sn]) composition of 0.2 at 120  °C. An increase in optical band gap is observed at decreasing deposition temperatures and is associated with quantum confinement effects caused by a decrease in crystallite size. The ability to change the conduction band energy level of ZTO enables the formation of suitable conduction band offsets between ZTO and CIGS with varying Ga-content.It is found that 15 nm thin ZTO buffer layers are sufficient to fabricate CIGS solar cells with conversion efficiencies up to 18.2 %. The JSC is in general 2 mA/cm2 higher, and the VOC 30 mV lower, for cells with the ZTO buffer layer as compared to cells with the traditional CdS buffer layer. In the end comparable efficiencies are obtained for the two different buffer layers. The gain in JSC for the ZTO buffer layer is associated with lower parasitic absorption in the UV-blue region of the solar spectrum and it is shown that the JSC can be increased further by making changes to the other layers in the traditional CdS/i-ZnO/ZnO:Al window layer structure. The ZTO is highly resistive, and it is found that the shunt preventing i-ZnO layer can be omitted, which further increases the JSC. Moreover, an additional increase in JSC is obtained by replacing the sputtered ZnO:Al front contact with In2O3 deposited by ALD. The large gain in JSC for the ZTO/In2O3 window layer stack compensates for the lower VOC related to the ZTO buffer layer, and it is demonstrated that the ZTO/In2O3 window layer structure yields 0.6 % (absolute) higher conversion efficiency than the CdS/i-ZnO/ZnO:Al window layer structure.

  • Deposition temperature induced conduction band changes in zinc tin oxide buffer layers for Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-0248 .- 1879-3398. ; 144, s. 684-690
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin film Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells with ALD-deposited Zn1-xSnxOy buffer layers were fabricated and the solar cell properties were investigated for varying ALD deposition temperatures in the range from 90 °C up to 180 °C. It was found that a process window exists between 105 °C and 135 °C, where high solar cell efficiency can be achieved. At lower ALD deposition temperatures the solar cell performance was mainly limited by low fill factor and at higher temperatures by low open circuit voltage. Numerical simulations and electrical characterization were used to relate the changes in solar cell performance as a function of ALD deposition temperature to changes in the conduction band energy level of the Zn1-xSnxOy buffer layer. The Zn1-xSnxOy films contain small ZnO or ZnO(Sn) crystallites (~10 nm), resulting in quantum confinement effects influencing the optical band gap of the buffer layer. The ALD deposition temperature affects the size of these crystallites and it is concluded that most of the changes in the band gap occur in the conduction band level.

  • Economic analysis of the early market of centralized photovoltaic parks in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Renewable Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-1481 .- 1879-0682. ; 185, s. 1192-1208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is one of the countries that experience growing installation volumes of Solar photovoltaic. Traditionally, in Sweden, most of the solar photovoltaic investments and policy incentives have focused on distributed photovoltaic systems. Yet, despite limited policy incentives and pessimistic forecasts, an increasing number of centralized photovoltaic parks have been commissioned and plans for substantial new capacities are communicated. Hence, the current paper investigates why. Detailed information about the underlying costs of six PV parks commissioned in2019 and 2020 in Sweden were obtained by in-depth interviews with stakeholders and were analysed through levelized cost of electricity calculations. We conclude that the unsubsidised levelized cost of electricity ranged from 27.37 to 49.39 €/MWh, with an average of 40.79 €/MWh. This is lower than what are assessed for photovoltaic parks in some recent Swedish electricity system scenario studies. The main reason for the discrepancy is identified to be the assumed interest rates in the system scenario studies and the actual cost of capital experienced in the market. Comparing the levelized cost of electricity values with the market value of solar photovoltaic electricity on the spot market show that four of the six studied parks would be profitable under a merchant business model with the last years spot prices. If the downward price trend continues, Sweden may face an unexpected expansion of photovoltaic parks.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Coalition Government as a Reflection of a Nation’s Politics and Society. - London : Routledge. - 9781138392113 - 9780429422379 ; , s. 127-146
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish coalition politics is markedly influenced both by a historically strong emphasis on near-unidimensional political conflict along the left-right economic dimension, the once-dominant position of the Social Democrats, and a negative parliamentarism system. These factors have contributed to most governments formed during the post-World War Two period comprising a minority of seats in parliament. Often, governments have been single-party Social Democrat cabinets, who have relied on support from one or more parties outside government. Swedish politics has long been characterized by “bloc politics”, where the socialist and the non-socialist bloc have competed for power. However, with the entry and growth of the populist radical-right party, the Sweden Democrats, the future of bloc politics has become more uncertain. Consequently, after the 2018 election, the formation of a centre-left, red-green government required drawn-out negotiations across and within the two blocs in order to obtain the necessary support of several non-socialist parties.

  • The effect of substrate temperature on atomic layer deposited zinc tin oxide
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 586, s. 82-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by atomic layer deposition (ALD), and the film properties were investigated for varying deposition temperatures in the range of 90 to 180 degrees C. It was found that the [Sn]/([Sn] + [Zn]) composition is only slightly temperature dependent, while properties such as growth rate, film density, material structure and band gap are more strongly affected. The growth rate dependence on deposition temperature varies with the relative number of zinc or tin containing precursor pulses and it correlates with the growth rate behavior of pure ZnO and SnOx ALD. In contrast to the pure ZnO phase, the density of the mixed ZTO films is found to depend on the deposition temperature and it increases linearly with about 1 g/cm(3) in total over the investigated range. Characterization by transmission electron microscopy suggests that zinc rich ZTO films contain small (similar to 10 nm) ZnO or ZnO(Sn) crystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix, and that these crystallites increase in size with increasing zinc content and deposition temperature. These crystallites are small enough for quantum confinement effects to reduce the optical band gap of the ZTO films as they grow in size with increasing deposition temperature.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 40th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EUPVSEC). - : EU PVSEC. - 3936338884 ; , s. 020527-001-020527-015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Understanding the photovoltaic (PV) power generation's temporal and spatial patterns is vital for grid balancing. This study aims to validate a simulation model for historical decentralized PV power generation, extending it to encompass the unique orientation of all PV systems within the Swedish municipality Knivsta. In a previous research project, a Convolutional Neural Network exhibited a 95% accuracy of identifying PV systems within Knivsta. In this project, using Light Detection and Ranging data, the orientation and area of detected PV systems was estimated. By combining this information with local weather and irradiance data, historical PV power generation was simulated. The regression analysis demonstrates strong correspondence between simulated and measured hourly generation for six reference systems, with coefficients of determination between 0.69–0.83. This study derives generic module parameters based on installation year and an average DC-to-AC ratio, enabling municipal-level simulations. Simulations for 2022, considering one scenario with optimal orientation for all PV systems and one scenario with derived real-condition orientations, reveal a smoothing effect in the daily pattern of aggregated PV generation, if considering real orientations. At the peak hour, power generation was found to be 10% lower when considering individual orientations compared to assuming optimal orientation across all facilities.

  • Human Behaviour in Social-Ecological Systems : Insights from economic experiments and agent-based modelling
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Progress towards sustainability requires changes in our individual and collective behaviour. Yet, our fundamental understanding of behaviour in relation to environmental change remains severely limited. In particular, little attention has been given to how individual and collective behaviours respond to, and are shaped by, non-linear environmental change (such as ‘regime shifts’) and its inherent uncertainties. The thesis makes two main contributions to the literature: 1) it provides one of the first accounts of human behaviour and collective action in relation to ecological regime shifts and associated uncertainties; and 2) extends the incipient behavioural common-pool resource literature that acknowledges social-ecological dynamics and ecological complexity. The overarching aim of this thesis is to further advance an empirically grounded understanding of human behaviour in social-ecological systems. In particular, the thesis attempts to unravel critical social-ecological factors and mechanisms for the sustainability of common-pool resources. This is especially relevant for contexts in which livelihoods can be more directly threatened by regime shifts. The following methods are applied: behavioural economic experiments in the lab (with students; Papers I and II) and in the field (with small-scale fishers from four different communities in the Colombian Caribbean; Paper III), and agent-based modelling empirically informed by a subset of the lab experiments (Paper IV). Paper I tests the effect of an endogenously driven regime shift on the emergence of cooperation and sustainable resource use. Paper II tests the effect of different risk levels of such a regime shift. The regime shift in both papers has negative consequences for the productivity of the shared resource. Paper III assesses the effect of different degrees of uncertainty about a climate-induced threshold in stock dynamics on the exploitation patterns; as well as the role of social and ecological local context. Paper IV explores critical individual-level factors and processes affecting the simultaneous emergence of collective action and sustainable resource use. Results cumulatively suggest that existing scientific knowledge indicating the potential for ecological regime shifts should be communicated to affected local communities, including the remaining uncertainties, as this information can encourage collective action for sustainable resource use. Results also highlight the critical role of ecological knowledge, knowledge-sharing, perceived ecological uncertainties, and the role local contexts play for sustainable outcomes. This thesis enriches the literature on social-ecological systems by demonstrating how a behavioural experimental approach can contribute new insights relevant for sustainability. Overall, these insights indicate that, given the opportunity and the willingness of people to come together, share knowledge, exchange ideas, and build trust, potential ecological crises can encourage collective action, and uncertainties can be turned into opportunities for dealing with change in constructive ways. This provides a hopeful outlook in the face of escalating environmental change and inherent uncertainties.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 535, s. 326-330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Partial shading of solar modules can subject shaded cells to significant reverse bias, often large enough toforce them into electrical breakdown, possibly resulting in irreversible damage. Therefore, better understandingof reverse current–voltage characteristics might lead to improvements in the design of solar modules. Thefocus of this study is the breakdown behavior of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) cells in darkness and under illumination. Two series of CIGS cells were investigated, with CdS and Zn–Sn–O buffer layers of varying thickness. Electricalbreakdown was found to be highly dependent on the buffer layer. Under blue illumination a remarkable decreasein breakdown voltage was observed for both buffer types. Metastable defects in the buffer/CIGS interfaceregion are tentatively proposed as the source of this effect and tunnelling is suggested as the mainmechanism responsible for breakdowns.
