  • Prevalence of microspirometry-defined chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in two European cohorts of patients with significant smoking history hospitalised for acute myocardial infarction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Thorax. - : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 0040-6376 .- 1468-3296. ; 78:Suppl. 4, s. A66-A66

    • Introduction: Smoking is a major risk factor for both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and myocardial infarction (MI). Systemic inflammation also contributes to both diseases and has been suggested as a potential target for intervention. Prevalence of COPD in those with a significant smoking history hospitalised for MI has not been well-characterised. We sought to obtain an accurate estimate of COPD burden in this group and characterise the population. Methods: Two consecutive cohorts of patients hospitalised for MI with a smoking history of ≥10 pack-years were recruited in Sweden and the United Kingdom (UK). Baseline characteristics were recorded, including treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and eosinophil count in blood. Microspirometry was performed using the Vitalograph COPD-6 device and symptom burden assessed using the COPD Assessment Test (CAT). The primary outcome was the prevalence of a preliminary diagnosis of clinically-significant COPD, here defined as a ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 and 6 seconds (FEV1/FEV6) <0.7 and with FEV1 <80% of predicted value. Results: In the UK cohort, 216 participants with MI (26% female, median age 60 (IQR 53–67) years, smoking history 32 (23–45) pack-years) were recruited. The proportion with any COPD was 36%. Clinically-significant COPD was found in 30 participants (13.9%, 95% CI 9.5–19.2). Of these, 43% had a prior COPD diagnosis, 20% had an eosinophil count ≥300 cells/mm3, mean CAT score was 14.4 ± 9.3), 80% had high symptom burden (CAT score >10) and 23% were receiving ICS. The Swedish cohort included 302 participants with MI (24% female, median age 68 (IQR 61–76) years, 26 (15–38) pack years), and clinically-significant COPD was found in 52 (17.2%; 12.9–21.5). In these 52 participants, 17% had a prior COPD diagnosis, 20% had an eosinophil count ≥300 cells/mm3, mean CAT score was 12.9 ± 7.2, 63% had CAT score ≥10 and 15% had treatment with ICS.Conclusions: The prevalence of preliminary diagnosis of clinically-significant COPD in patients with a ≥10 pack-year smoking history hospitalised for MI is similar between two European cohorts and under-recognised. Further work is warranted to determine whether identification and treatment of COPD improves clinical outcomes following MI.

  • The Ice-Free Topography of Svalbard
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Geophysical Research Letters. - 0094-8276 .- 1944-8007. ; 45:21, s. 11760-11769
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a first version of the Svalbard ice-free topography (SVIFT1.0) using a mass conserving approach for mapping glacier ice thickness. SVIFT1.0 is informed by more than 1 million point measurements, totalling more than 8,700 km of thickness profiles. SVIFT1.0 is publicly available and represents the geometric state around the year 2010. Our estimate for the total ice volume is 6,199 km(3), equivalent to 1.5-cm sea level rise. The thickness map suggests that 13% of the glacierized area is grounded below sea level. A complementary map of error estimates comprises uncertainties in the thickness surveys as well as in other input variables. Aggregated error estimates are used to define a likely ice-volume range of 5,200-7,300 km(3). The ice front thickness of marine-terminating glaciers is a key quantity for ice loss attribution because it controls the potential ice discharge by iceberg calving into the ocean. We find a mean ice front thickness of 135 m for the archipelago (likely range 123-158 m). Plain Language Summary Svalbard is an archipelago in the Arctic, north of Norway, which is comparable in size to the New York metropolitan area. Roughly half of it is covered by glacier ice. Yet to this day, the ice volume stored in the many glaciers on Svalbard is not well known. Many attempts have been made to infer a total volume estimate, but results differ substantially. This surprises because of the long research activity in this area. A large record of more than 1 million thickness measurements exists, making Svalbard an ideal study area for the application of a state-of-the-art mapping approach for glacier ice thickness. The mapping approach computes an ice volume that will raise global sea level by more than half an inch if instantaneously melted. If spread over the metropolitan area, New York would be buried beneath a 100-m ice cover. The asset of this approach is that it provides not only a thickness map for each glacier on the archipelago but also an error map that defines the likely local thickness range. Finally, we provide the first well-informed estimate of the ice front thickness of all marine-terminating glaciers that loose icebergs to the ocean. The archipelago-wide mean ice front cliff is 135 m.

  • DC field dependent properties of Na0.5K0.5NbO3/SiO2/Si structures at millimeter-wave frequencies
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 78:13, s. 1900-1902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dielectric properties of laser-ablated 0.5-mum-thick c-axis epitaxial Na0.5K0.5NbO3 films on high-resistivity (7.7 Omega cm) silicon SiO2/Si substrate are studied experimentally at frequencies up to 40 GHz. For measurements, planar 0.5-mum-thick gold electrodes (interdigital and straight slot) are photolithography defined on the top surface of Na0.5K0.5NbO3 films. The slot width between the electrodes is 2 or 4 mum. 13% capacitance change at 40 V dc bias and Q factor more than 15 are observed at 40 GHz, which makes the structure useful for applications in electrically tunable millimeter-wave devices.

  • Low-cost Automation for Prepreg Handling - Two Cases from the Aerospace Industry
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: SAE International Journal of Materials & Manufacturing. - Warrendale, USA : SAE International. - 1946-3979 .- 1946-3987. ; 9:1, s. 68-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With an increased use of composite materials within the aerospace industry follows a need for rational and cost-effective methods for composite manufacturing. Manual operations are still common for low to medium manufacturing volumes and complex products. Manual operations can for example be found in material handling, when picking prepreg plies from a cutter table and stacking them to form a plane laminate in preparation for a subsequent forming operation. Stacking operations of this kind often involves a great number of different ply geometries and removal of backing paper and other protecting materials like plastic. In this paper two different demonstrator cells for automated picking of prepreg plies and stacking of plane laminates are presented. One demonstrator is utilizing a standard industrial robot and an advanced end-effector to handle the ply variants. The other demonstrator is using a dual arm robot which allow for simpler end-effector design. In combination with a previously developed system for automated removal of backing papers both systems have shown to be capable of automatically picking prepreg plies from a plane surface and stack them to generate a flat multistack laminate. The dual arm approach has shown advantageous since it result in simpler end-effector design and a successive lay down sequence that result in good adhesion between the plies in the laminate. null.

  • Formation and evolution of an extensive blue ice moraine in central Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Glaciology. - : CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS. - 0022-1430 .- 1727-5652. ; 66:255, s. 49-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mount Achernar moraine is a terrestrial sediment archive that preserves a record of ice-sheet dynamics and climate over multiple glacial cycles. Similar records exist in other blue ice moraines elsewhere on the continent, but an understanding of how these moraines form is limited. We propose a model to explain the formation of extensive, coherent blue ice moraine sequences based on the integration of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data with ice velocity and surface exposure ages. GPR transects (100 and 25 MHz) both perpendicular and parallel to moraine ridges at Mount Achernar reveal an internal structure defined by alternating relatively clean ice and steeply dipping debris bands extending to depth, and where visible, to the underlying bedrock surface. Sediment is carried to the surface from depth along these debris bands, and sublimates out of the ice, accumulating over time (>300 ka). The internal pattern of dipping reflectors, combined with increasing surface exposure ages, suggest sequential exposure of the sediment where ice and debris accretes laterally to form the moraine. Subsurface structure varies across the moraine and can be linked to changes in basal entrainment conditions. We speculate that higher concentrations of debris may have been entrained in the ice during colder glacial periods or entrained more proximal to the moraine sequence.
