  • Emotional labour and emotional strain in late-modern prison work
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores emotional labour strategies among Swedish prison officers, and how these affect the emotional strain. Case studies of five Swedish prisons and a national survey of prison officers are used. Analysis indicates that prison officers perform complex emotional labour. Due to differences in subcultures and informal norms, the strategies officers use in managing their emotional display vary between wings and roles. Different strategies may also cause different kinds of emotional strain. Emotional surface acting may lead to cynicism and alienation tendencies, while deep acting may lead to stress and exhaustion.

  • Treating Drug Abusers in Prison: Competing Paradigms Anchored in Different Welfare Ideologies : The Case of Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian penal history, culture and prison practice. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9781137585288 ; , s. 177-204
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The number of prisoners in Sweden categorized as drug abusers have increased substantially in the last 20 years according to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service (SPPS). Drug abusers are defined by SPPS as those who have used illicit drugs during the previous 12 months (Ekbom et al. 2006). In 1970 about 20 % of the prisoners could be classified as drug abusers, while they made up 28 % of the prison population in 1997 (Amilon and Edstedt 1998). In 2010 the number of prisoners with drug problems had risen to 60 % (Ekbom et al. 2011). One reason for this increase may be the sentencing policy.

  • Mobbning och socialt stöd från lärare och klasskamrater : en longitudinell studie av barns erfarenheter av mobbning
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Sosiologi i dag. - 0332-6330 .- 1893-4617. ; 44:4, s. 79-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Social support from teachers as a buffering factor for bullied victim’s well-being
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A significant body of research indicates that being victim of bullying increases the risk for negative health consequences, short term as well as throughout the lifespan. Children involved in bullying either as victims or bully-victims have higher risk for psychosomatic problems than their uninvolved peers. This risk is evenly distributed among victims of all different age groups, for both genders and between countries world over. Depression, psychosomatic problems, low self esteem and even thoughts of suicide are common consequences of being the victim of bullying. It is therefore important to study factors that may improve or protect these victims well-being. Social support has proven to be an important factor for handling different kind of stressors as well as being positive correlated with academics achievements and health. However little research has studied how social support may influence bullied children’s well being, especially social support deriving from teachers. The aim of this study is to explore the effects that social support from teachers may have on bullied children’s health, in particular, to explore if there are differences between bullied children experiences high or low levels of social support from teachers in relation to their well-being.Method: Data were collected during the spring of 2013 by using an online web-based questionnaire containing a variety of questions. The sample included all children in elementary schools, grades 4 to 9 in a mid-size Swedish m. In total, 5078 pupils completed the survey which gives a response rate at 82,01 %.Result: The result will explore how social support from teacher may serve as a protective factor for bullied children in relation to their total well-being as well as show how bullied children experiences different levels of victimization benefits from teachers social support. We will also discuss which implications the results gives to the importance of taking teacher and pupils relation into consideration when formulation anti bullying prevention programs and policies.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Tidskrift for Kriminalvidenskab. - Odense. - 0029-1528. ; 101:2, s. 183-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over tha past 10 years drug treatment programmes have been exstensivly developed in Swedish prisons. Thsi article highlights how prison officers working in treatment wings think and act in relation to their professional role, their relations to the prisoners and the organisation of drug treatment within the prison.  Data consists of interviews and observations from three Swedish prisons in different security categories. The study examines the significance of secdurity categorie, overall prison-staff culture, treatment wing culture, inmate gender and the treatment role and officers work identity in the treatment wings. The ways in which prison officers think and act depends on how their professional roles are defined at the different prisons. Definitins differ in regard to views on addiction, preferences fo the ways in which treatment should be performed and organized and ideas about how ideal levels of staff-prisoner interaction are best accomplished within the treatment context.

  • Officers and drug counsellors : new occupational identities in Nordic prisons
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Criminology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-0955 .- 1464-3529. ; 55:2, s. 303-320
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasingly, prison drug treatment is introduced in European prisons. This increase may begin to change the prison as officers and drug counsellors are given new occupational responsibilities. Based on six month of observational studies and qualitative interviews with 104 prison employees in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway in 12 prisons, this article investigates the practices and values of drug counsellors and officers. This shows that increasingly, counsellors integrate the control and disciplinary sanctions of the prison environment into their treatment approach. Simultaneously, officers working in drug treatment wings highlight the importance of the treatment ethos in their control work, adjusting the social representations of their professional identities accordingly. We discuss whether the concepts of treatment and control should be rethought.

  • Prison-based drug treatment in Nordic political discourse : an elastic discursive construct
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Criminology. - : SAGE Publications. - 1477-3708 .- 1741-2609. ; 10:6, s. 659-674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prison-based drug treatment (PDT) has increased markedly in the Nordic countries over the last 15 years. Based on data from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, we outline the historical development of PDT and analyse the rationales employed in the political discourse in the Nordic countries legitimizing this development. These rationales relate to the reduction of criminality zero tolerance, rights and the modern welfare state, and managerialism. Though these rationales may appear dissimilar, they have been combined with relative ease in the political discourse. Actually, this elasticity may partly explain the popularity of PDT. We discuss whether the increased use of PDT reflects a criminalization of social problems and signals a rebirth of the treatment ideology in Nordic prisons.

  • Prison cultures and social representations : the case of Hinseberg, a women's prison in Sweden
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Prisoner Health. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1744-9200 .- 1744-9219. ; 1:2-4, s. 143-161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women represent approximately 6% of the prison population of Sweden (total = 5000). This article presents a study of female inmates in the closed prison for women, Hinseberg, in Sweden. The study examines the inmates and staff culture on the basis of concepts such as interaction rituals, status, role conflicts and social representations. The methodology included questionnaires to all inmates, qualitative interviews with inmates and staff and observation within the prison. Among the findings, it was clear that some inmates have a higher status than others, which is linked to the type of crime committed, years of imprisonment, previous imprisonment, relations to male gang members, and charisma. So-called ‘Queens’ rule the wings and maintain the inmates’ codes. Examples of these codes are: do not associate with the staff, do not talk too long with staff, do not be an informer, do not seek treatment programmes, and do not trust anybody. Those who challenge the codes are seen as an informer or traitor, and the culture in the prison was found to be oppressive towards women who want to seek treatment and support from staff. The study also shows that there are similarities in the staff and the inmates’ cultures. Experienced prison officers often have a significant impact on the staff culture, and among staff there are informal codes, i.e. that you should not be ‘too close’ to the inmates and do not trust the inmates. This leads to an objectifying and distancing approach in relation to the inmates. In both cultures stereotypical social representations of ‘the other’ is created, which have a negative impact on the possibilities for working with rehabilitation.

  • Prisoners experience of the life in treatment wings
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the presentation is to analyze prisoners’ experiences of being involved in treatment programs in prison. Are there differences in the climate in a regular wing and a treatment wing? How do the prisoners describe their interactions with other prisoners in the wing and prison officers and therapists? How do the prisoners’ experience the conflict between control and rehabilitation in a treatment wing? The data consists of 20 face to face interviews with male and female prisoners in three Swedish prison security category 1 and 2. The prisoners age ranged from 23 to 45 years and their sentence ranged from 2 years to life in prison (minimum 18 years). The results show that the cultures in the treatment wings were different deepening on security category and how the treatment was organized. In two prisons the drug treatment program was run by a 12- step therapist (AA/NA) and the prison officers working in the wing were involved in the treatment. In one prison the prison officers in the wing were not involved in the treatment. The drug treatment program was based on cognitive behavioral theory and run by specially trained prison officers. The prisoners’ interactions with the prison officers were also different in the prisons depending of what kind of rituals the prisoners and staff were involved in. We can also see that the prisoners’ roles and interactions with staff are much more hostile in regular wings than in treatment wings. This can also be explained by the rituals that prisoners and staff are involved in the two types of wings. Concerning the control acts like visitations and urine samples in the treatment wings the prisoners get somewhat frustrated but at the same time they see these acts as positive to prevent drugs coming into the wing.

  • The construction of social representations : prison culture and feeling rules
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden there are 55 prisons with different security levels. There are six prisons for women.  The prisons holds about 5600 places were some 6 % are women. There are approximately 4000 prison officers who work with the prisoners on a day to day basis in the prisons. The number of female prison officers has increased in Swedish prisons and has now reached about 35% of the work force. The last years security has been a priority within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. The question is what impact the priority for security routines has on the daily practice in the prisons were rehabilitation also should be a central aim.  How do prison officers think, feel and act in their daily work with prisoners and colleagues? How do prison officers navigate in the contradictory, emotionally demanding and very complex landscape that prisons are?  With the use of theoretical concepts like; social representations, emotional work and interaction rituals the work culture of prison officers will be examined. In  relation to the questions put forward above the questions is also if prison officers work culture is developing towards integration and consensus or towards an increased division and sub cultural grouping between different kinds of wings such as special security wings, treatment wings and normal wings. The data is collected in five prisons with different security levels. The project is financed by the Swedish council for working life and social research (FAS)

  • The prison as an emotional arena
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women who are placed in prison usually have a much more problematic situation compared to men concerning addiction, housing, economy, work and social relations. Many suffer from anxiety and depression. *Women in prison have a greater need to talk about traumatic child experiences, being exposed to violence by  men and having their children placed in foster care. They also have deep feelings of quilt and shame in relation to not being bale to live up to the conventional expectation of the role of motherhood. Shame seems s to be an emotion that has always been present in their life career. The staff often experience feelings of fear anxiety, frustration, disgust and depression and more seldom happiness, hope and satisfaction. An objectification and dissociation from the inmates is not unusual. Often the "feeling rules" that exists in the staff and inmate culture are discussed after dramatic escapes or riots. It should be noted though that women in prison in Sweden never have organised riots or violent escapes. it is according to Crawley (2004) much more interesting to examine these emotional experiences "when everything is as usual". What emotions are allowed to be expressed, when and under what circumstances?  The purpose of this paper is to discuss the front stage "feeling rules" of the inmate and staff culture  and how these rules becomes hindrance for creating deeper relations to "the other" and relations which are built on mutual respect, humanism and that can lead to a more rehabilitation oriented attitude from both inmates and staff.

  • Ingår i: Nordic studies on alcohol and drugs. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 1458-6126 .- 1455-0725. ; 29:6, s. 561-574
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: This article reviews the development in Sweden of prison-based drug treatment (PBDT) from the 1970s to the present situation.Data: The data consists of committee reports, white papers, research reports and interviews with two senior managers from the Swedish Prison and Probation Services (SPPS).Results: The 1970s and 1980s trials with milieu therapy in prisons were followed by the introduction of cognitive programmes in the 1990s. Due to the growing number of prisoners with drug problems, the Prison Anti-Drug Effort increased the number of places and programmes for drug treatment in prisons. As of 2000, the scientific evaluation of all prison-based drug treatment has been strongly emphasised. Drug control has increased since 2004, and the very concept of PBDT is now approached rather more rigorously and scientifically. Conclusion: The SPPS programme evaluations are scientifically formed, but changes in practice are slow to emerge. The SPPS runs a more restricted policy compared to treatment outside, which leads to some evidence-based treatment methods being rejected. Also, PBDT is somewhat under threat by changes in the prisons' internal organisation with growing specialisation in different wings, as well as by the poor financial situation of the SPPS.

    • Purpose: This study aims to analyze prisoners’ experiences of prison drug-treatment programs in Sweden. How do they describe their personal relationships with the prison staff and with other prisoners in the wings? How do they describe the social climate and the control in drug-treatment wings? How could differences between these wings be understood?Design/methodology/approach: The data consist of observations and face-to-face interviews with male and female prisoners in three Swedish prison drug-treatment wings. Analytical concepts used are roles, relationships and rituals.Findings: The prisoners’ relationships with prison officers seemed connected to what kinds of rituals the prisoners and staff engaged in. In all three treatment wings, the staff and prisoners were involved in natural rituals. This was most frequent in the women’s prison with a 12-step program. The prisoners were frustrated with control measures but were mainly positive to the measures as preventing drugs from coming into the wing.Research limitations/implications: Only three prison wings, however in varying prisons, have been studied.Originality/value: These results gives a useful prisoners’ perspective on the development of drug-prevention and treatment in different kinds of prisons.
