  • Attrition during Basic Military Training in the Swedish Armed Forces
  • 2018
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Attrition from basic military training is a serious and costly problem for Armed Forces. When the Swedish Armed Forces transformed from a conscript-based force to an all-volunteer force in 2010 the knowledge about reasons for attrition decreased, due to changed procedures. Today a recruit can leave basic military training within 24 hours and without further explanations. The project “Systematic follow-up of the psychological selection”, aims at developing the admission tests, the basic military training and the work environment at the military units in order to reduce attrition. The project is a collaboration between the Swedish Armed Forces including the Internal Occupational Health Care Center and Human Resources, the Swedish Defence Recruitment Agency and the Swedish Defence University.Data is collected from the admission tests, questionnaires (first week/baseline, and last week of training) and interviews with recruits who drop out. The project aims to predict attrition caused by other factors than injuries and to predict further engagement/employment in the Swedish Armed Forces.Partly due to difficulties to employ sufficient numbers to the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Government have decided to reestablish the conscription in 2018. The conscription will be gender neutral and work as a complement to the volunteer recruitment. We believe that the methods of this project and the knowledge gained are as reliable for a conscript-based training as for a volunteer training.

  • Systematic follow-up of the psychological selection to the Swedish Armed Forces
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The transition from a conscript-based force to an all-volunteer force in Sweden 2010 implied changes for selection and training as well as for the procedure for attrition from the basic military training. Today a recruit can leave basic military training within 24 hours and without further explanations. As a consequence, the changed procedure when a recruit leaves training has caused a lack of information of reasons for attrition and lack of feedback to the Swedish Defence Recruitment Agency who is responsible for the assessments and selection of recruits. The first step to re-establish a systematic follow-up of the psychological selection and to validate the selection procedure has started. The aim of this project is to gain knowledge of reasons for attrition from basic military training in order to predict attrition and to predict successful 76 recruitment (defined as signing a contract with the Swedish Armed Forces). Results from 2015 (478 questionnaires and 36 interviews) indicate that it is not only the selection that contributes to successful recruitment, but also the training period and the leadership of the officers. Further, the results have facilitated the development of questionnaires, interview guides, instructions and methods for future studies. The project is a collaboration between the Swedish Armed Forces including the Internal Occupational Health Care Center and Human Resources, the Swedish Defence Recruitment Agency and the Swedish Defence University.

  • Struggling for hopefulness : a qualitative study of Swedish women who self-harm
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. - Oxford : Blackwell Scientific. - 1351-0126 .- 1365-2850. ; 11:3, s. 284-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increase in the number of Swedish psychiatric patients who self-harm, yet self-harm is seldom described in published research. The aim of this study was to describe how people who self-harm experience received care and their desired care. Nine participants, all Swedish women who had been treated for inpatient or outpatient psychiatric care, narrated their experiences of care for self-harm. Using qualitative content analysis, two themes were formulated: 'Expecting to be confirmed while being confirmed fosters hopefulness'; and, 'Expecting to be confirmed while not being confirmed stifles hopefulness'. Each of these themes emerged from five subthemes that clustered around positive and negative aspects of being seen-not being seen, being valued-being stigmatized, being connected-disconnected, being believed-doubted, and being understood-not being understood. Of significance is for nurses to view persons who self-harm as human beings and to grasp the importance of being confirmed by staff that can foster hopefulness in persons who self-harm, yet realize the possibility of the paradoxical nature of hopefulness and being confirmed.

  • PeRL : a circum-Arctic Permafrost Region Pond and Lake database
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Earth System Science Data. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1866-3508 .- 1866-3516. ; 9:1, s. 317-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ponds and lakes are abundant in Arctic permafrost lowlands. They play an important role in Arctic wetland ecosystems by regulating carbon, water, and energy fluxes and providing freshwater habitats. However, ponds, i. e., waterbodies with surface areas smaller than 1.0 x 10(4) m(2), have not been inventoried on global and regional scales. The Permafrost Region Pond and Lake (PeRL) database presents the results of a circum-Arctic effort to map ponds and lakes from modern (2002-2013) high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery with a resolution of 5m or better. The database also includes historical imagery from 1948 to 1965 with a resolution of 6m or better. PeRL includes 69 maps covering a wide range of environmental conditions from tundra to boreal regions and from continuous to discontinuous permafrost zones. Waterbody maps are linked to regional permafrost landscape maps which provide information on permafrost extent, ground ice volume, geology, and lithology. This paper describes waterbody classification and accuracy, and presents statistics of waterbody distribution for each site. Maps of permafrost landscapes in Alaska, Canada, and Russia are used to extrapolate waterbody statistics from the site level to regional landscape units. PeRL presents pond and lake estimates for a total area of 1.4 x 10(6) km(2) across the Arctic, about 17% of the Arctic lowland (<300ma. s.l.) land surface area. PeRL waterbodies with sizes of 1.0 x 10(6) m(2) down to 1.0 x 10(2) m(2) contributed up to 21% to the total water fraction. Waterbody density ranged from 1.0 x 10 to 9.4 x 10(1) km(-2). Ponds are the dominant waterbody type by number in all landscapes representing 45-99% of the total waterbody number. The implementation of PeRL size distributions in land surface models will greatly improve the investigation and projection of surface inundation and carbon fluxes in permafrost lowlands. Waterbody maps, study area boundaries, and maps of regional permafrost landscapes including detailed metadata are available at https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.868349.

  • Talent management i organisationer : Ett kritiskt managementperspektiv
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is about talent management. It is focusing on the provisioning of talented managers to the global executive level. The aim is to increase the understanding of how talent management is practiced, with consequences for organizations and employees. In order to meet this purpose, three inquiries have guided the research process. The first inquiry examines the practice of talent management, the management practice. The second inquiry examines the construction of talent management with a power-perspective. The third inquiry examines how challenges can arise when doing talent management.A multinational company constitutes the empirical field, specifically the management of its local branch with head-office in Sweden. One result of this dissertation is an inventory of the assessment tools and other guiding principles uses by the company’s actors in the daily work with talent management. The dissertation applies a relational perspective. It is a multi-level study based on Bourdieu’s theoretical framework. For this purpose, Bourdieu’s triad of central concepts is used: fields, habitus and capital, as well as doxa and symbolic violence. To create the empirical material, critical ethnographic method was chosen. The method has the potential to give close descriptions of the ordinary practice in everyday life in the workplace. An inside-perspective on management was enabled by participatory inquiry.A survey was made of tools, including assessment instruments, used in the company. The analysis showed that talent management was dominated by a mainstream management perspective. By applying a critical management perspective, power was analyzed and the importance of language was emphasized. In this way, we investigated how talent management was constructed in the management practice in the Swedish branch of a multinational company. This have resulted in identification of an elite-paradox, HRM-paradox and KPI (metrics)-paradox. Also, several repertoires to cope with power-games was identified. Paradoxes could have consequences for both the organization and the employees. Power perspectives also highlight challenges with gender equality that can result in women’s talent being an untapped source. As a result, the study raises questions about inclusion and exclusion. It has shown that power-fields emerged in the organisation, leading to that talent-capital was valued and gained in a relational power-game. One result is to shed light on the power of the doxa, that is norms taken for granted, and that the doxan hides paradoxes that can cause challenges for organizations and individuals. This result is interpreted in a model that illustrates a power-surface showing that talent management can serve as a façade with a cosmetic function, hiding paradoxes caused by power. The dissertation provides several possible contributions to theory and practice. It theoretically links talent management to critical management studies (CMS) in general and especially to power-analysis theory of a Bourdieuan type. Contribution to the field of practice (and theory) could be to provide a foundation for further development of a guide to analyse talent management in organizations from a critical management perspective. Keywords: Talent Management, Global Talent Management (GTM), Critical Management Studies (CMS), Bourdieu, Power, Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM), Critical Ethnographic Method

  • Function and importance of p63 in normal oral mucosa and squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Advances in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. - Basel : KARGER. - 0065-3071 .- 1662-2847. ; 62, s. 49-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND/AIMS: Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) is the 6th most common malignancy worldwide with a 5-year survival that has not improved over the last 20-25 years. Factors of prognostic significance for this tumour type include the presence of regional lymph node metastasis and amplification of chromosome 3q21-29, where the p63 gene is located. This gene encodes 6 proteins and is crucial for formation of the oral mucosa, teeth, salivary glands and skin. Each of the 6 different p63 proteins has different characteristics and functions, where some resemble the tumour suppressor protein p53, whilst others have functions that oppose p53. METHODS: To understand the function and importance of p63 in oral mucosa and tumour development we have studied protein as well as mRNA expression in normal oral mucosa and tumours. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Expression of p63 proteins differs between the cell layers in normal oral mucosa, and primary HNSCC has a high expression level of p63 isoforms normally expressed in basal cells. Data suggest that p63 expression in HNSCC influences tumour cell differentiation.
