  • Measurement of branching fractions for psi(3686) -> gamma eta ', gamma eta, and gamma pi(0)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 96:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a data sample of 448 x 10(6) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, the decays psi(3686) -> gamma eta and psi(3686) -> gamma pi(0) are observed with a statistical significance of 7.3 sigma and 6.7 sigma, respectively. The branching fractions are measured to be B(psi(3686) -> gamma eta) = (0.85 +/- 0.18 +/- 0.05) x 10(-6) and B(psi(3686) ->gamma pi(0)) = (0.95 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.05) x 10(-6). In addition, we measure the branching fraction of psi(3686) -> gamma eta' to be B(psi(3686) -> gamma eta') = (125.1 +/- 2.2 +/- 6.2)x10(-6), which represents an improvement of precision over previous results.

  • Search for Dark Matter Annihilations towards the Inner Galactic Halo from 10 Years of Observations with HESS
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 117:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inner region of the Milky Way halo harbors a large amount of dark matter (DM). Given its proximity, it is one of the most promising targets to look for DM. We report on a search for the annihilations of DM particles using gamma-ray observations towards the inner 300 pc of the Milky Way, with the H.E.S.S. array of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. The analysis is based on a 2D maximum likelihood method using Galactic Center (GC) data accumulated by H.E.S.S. over the last 10 years (2004-2014), and does not show any significant gamma-ray signal above background. Assuming Einasto and Navarro-Frenk-White DM density profiles at the GC, we derive upper limits on the annihilation cross section . These constraints are the strongest obtained so far in the TeV DM mass range and improve upon previous limits by a factor 5. For the Einasto profile, the constraints reach values of 6 x 10(-26) cm(3) s(-1) in the W+W- channel for a DM particle mass of 1.5 TeV, and 2 x 10(-26) cm(3) s(-1) in the tau(+)tau(-) channel for a 1 TeV mass. For the first time, ground-based gamma-ray observations have reached sufficient sensitivity to probe values expected from the thermal relic density for TeV DM particles.

  • Acceleration of petaelectronvolt protons in the Galactic Centre
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 531:7595, s. 476-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Galactic cosmic rays reach energies of at least a few petaelectronvolts(1) (of the order of 1015 electronvolts). This implies that our Galaxy contains petaelectronvolt accelerators ('PeVatrons'), but all proposed models of Galactic cosmic-ray accelerators encounter difficulties at exactly these energies(2). Dozens of Galactic accelerators capable of accelerating particles to energies of tens of teraelectronvolts (of the order of 10(13) electronvolts) were inferred from recent gamma-ray observations(3). However, none of the currently known accelerators-not even the handful of shell-type supernova remnants commonly believed to supply most Galactic cosmic rays-has shown the characteristic tracers of petaelectronvolt particles, namely, power-law spectra of.-rays extending without a cut-off or a spectral break to tens of teraelectronvolts(4). Here we report deep.-ray observations with arcminute angular resolution of the region surrounding the Galactic Centre, which show the expected tracer of the presence of petaelectronvolt protons within the central 10 parsecs of the Galaxy. We propose that the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* is linked to this PeVatron. Sagittarius A* went through active phases in the past, as demonstrated by X-ray outbursts(5) and an outflow from the Galactic Centre(6). Although its current rate of particle acceleration is not sufficient to provide a substantial contribution to Galactic cosmic rays, Sagittarius A* could have plausibly been more active over the last 10(6)-10(7) years, and therefore should be considered as a viable alternative to supernova remnants as a source of petaelectronvolt Galactic cosmic rays.

  • Detailed spectral and morphological analysis of the shell type supernova remnant RCW 86
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. We aim for an understanding of the morphological and spectral properties of the supernova remnant RCW 86 and for insights into the production mechanism leading to the RCW 86 very high-energy gamma-ray emission. Methods. We analyzed High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.) data that had increased sensitivity compared to the observations presented in the RCW 86 H.E.S.S. discovery publication. Studies of the morphological correlation between the 0.5-1 keV X-ray band, the 2-5 keV X-ray band, radio, and gamma-ray emissions have been performed as well as broadband modeling of the spectral energy distribution with two different emission models. Results. We present the first conclusive evidence that the TeV gamma-ray emission region is shell-like based on our morphological studies. The comparison with 2-5 keV X-ray data reveals a correlation with the 0.4-50 TeV gamma-ray emission. The spectrum of RCW 86 is best described by a power law with an exponential cutoff at E-cut = (3.5 +/- 1.2(stat)) TeV and a spectral index of Gamma approximate to 1.6 +/- 0.2. A static leptonic one-zone model adequately describes the measured spectral energy distribution of RCW 86, with the resultant total kinetic energy of the electrons above 1 GeV being equivalent to similar to 0.1% of the initial kinetic energy of a Type Ia supernova explosion (10(51) erg). When using a hadronic model, a magnetic field of B approximate to 100 mu G is needed to represent the measured data. Although this is comparable to formerly published estimates, a standard E-2 spectrum for the proton distribution cannot describe the gamma-ray data. Instead, a spectral index of Gamma(p) approximate to 1.7 would be required, which implies that similar to 7 x 10(49)/n(cm-3) erg has been transferred into high-energy protons with the effective density n(cm-3) = n/1 cm(-3). This is about 10% of the kinetic energy of a typical Type Ia supernova under the assumption of a density of 1 cm(-3).

  • Discovery of variable VHE gamma-ray emission from the binary system 1FGL J1018.6-5856
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Series. - : EDP Sciences. - 0365-0138 .- 1286-4846. ; 577
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Re-observations with the HESS telescope array of the very high-energy (VHE) source HESS J1018-589 A that is coincident with the Fermi-LAT γ-ray binary 1FGL J1018.6-5856 have resulted in a source detection significance of more than 9σ and the detection of variability (χ$^2$/ν of 238.3/155) in the emitted γ-ray flux. This variability confirms the association of HESS J1018-589 A with the high-energy γ-ray binary detected by Fermi-LAT and also confirms the point-like source as a new VHE binary system. The spectrum of HESS J1018-589 A is best fit with a power-law function with photon index Γ = 2.20 \plusmn 0.14$_stat$ \plusmn 0.2$_sys$. Emission is detected up to ~20 TeV. The mean differential flux level is (2.9 \plusmn 0.4) \times 10$^-13$ TeV$^-1$ cm$^-2$ s$^-1$ at 1 TeV, equivalent to ~1% of the flux from the Crab Nebula at the same energy. Variability is clearly detected in the night-by-night light curve. When folded on the orbital period of 16.58 days, the rebinned light curve peaks in phase with the observed X-ray and high-energy phaseograms. The fit of the HESS phaseogram to a constant flux provides evidence of periodicity at the level of N$_sigma$\gt 3σ. The shape of the VHE phaseogram and measured spectrum suggest a low-inclination, low-eccentricity system with amodest impact from VHE γ-ray absorption due to pair production (τ \lsim 1 at 300 GeV).

  • Evolution of genes and genomes on the Drosophila phylogeny
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 450:7167, s. 203-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comparative analysis of multiple genomes in a phylogenetic framework dramatically improves the precision and sensitivity of evolutionary inference, producing more robust results than single-genome analyses can provide. The genomes of 12 Drosophila species, ten of which are presented here for the first time (sechellia, simulans, yakuba, erecta, ananassae, persimilis, willistoni, mojavensis, virilis and grimshawi), illustrate how rates and patterns of sequence divergence across taxa can illuminate evolutionary processes on a genomic scale. These genome sequences augment the formidable genetic tools that have made Drosophila melanogaster a pre-eminent model for animal genetics, and will further catalyse fundamental research on mechanisms of development, cell biology, genetics, disease, neurobiology, behaviour, physiology and evolution. Despite remarkable similarities among these Drosophila species, we identified many putatively non-neutral changes in protein-coding genes, non-coding RNA genes, and cis-regulatory regions. These may prove to underlie differences in the ecology and behaviour of these diverse species.

  • 3D genomics across the tree of life reveals condensin II as a determinant of architecture type
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 372:6545, s. 984-989
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated genome folding across the eukaryotic tree of life. We find two types of three-dimensional (3D) genome architectures at the chromosome scale. Each type appears and disappears repeatedly during eukaryotic evolution. The type of genome architecture that an organism exhibits correlates with the absence of condensin II subunits. Moreover, condensin II depletion converts the architecture of the human genome to a state resembling that seen in organisms such as fungi or mosquitoes. In this state, centromeres cluster together at nucleoli, and heterochromatin domains merge. We propose a physical model in which lengthwise compaction of chromosomes by condensin II during mitosis determines chromosome-scale genome architecture, with effects that are retained during the subsequent interphase. This mechanism likely has been conserved since the last common ancestor of all eukaryotes.

  • Circulating sex hormones and breast cancer risk factors in postmenopausal women: reanalysis of 13 studies
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1532-1827 .- 0007-0920. ; 105:5, s. 709-722
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Breast cancer risk for postmenopausal women is positively associated with circulating concentrations of oestrogens and androgens, but the determinants of these hormones are not well understood. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of breast cancer risk factors and circulating hormone concentrations in more than 6000 postmenopausal women controls in 13 prospective studies. RESULTS: Concentrations of all hormones were lower in older than younger women, with the largest difference for dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS), whereas sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) was higher in the older women. Androgens were lower in women with bilateral ovariectomy than in naturally postmenopausal women, with the largest difference for free testosterone. All hormones were higher in obese than lean women, with the largest difference for free oestradiol, whereas SHBG was lower in obese women. Smokers of 15+ cigarettes per day had higher levels of all hormones than non-smokers, with the largest difference for testosterone. Drinkers of 20+ g alcohol per day had higher levels of all hormones, but lower SHBG, than non-drinkers, with the largest difference for DHEAS. Hormone concentrations were not strongly related to age at menarche, parity, age at first full-term pregnancy or family history of breast cancer. CONCLUSION: Sex hormone concentrations were strongly associated with several established or suspected risk factors for breast cancer, and may mediate the effects of these factors on breast cancer risk. • Mutual Coupling in Antenna Arrays 2013
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Antennas and Propagation. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1687-5869 .- 1687-5877. ; 2014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The invention of antenna arrays opened up the door for microwave sensing and communications. Most applications of antenna arrays are in the defense and wireless communications areas. The introduction of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) concept in recent years has opened up further opportunities in that the system performance can be maintained with a smaller number of antennas. The existence of mutual coupling effect, that is, the electromagnetic interaction between antenna elements, appears as an undesirable effect in most of these cases. The transmitted and received signals can be significantly distorted such that the signals no longer depend solely on the antenna elements, but also on the array structure and the surrounding environment. Such distortions result in the reduction of channel capacities in communications applications, as well as poor accuracies in ranging and direction finding. In most applications, the mutual coupling effect is unknown. A major challenge is then to characterize this undesirable effect and to accurately estimate the unknown parameters (range, direction) without a priori knowledge of the signal environment. This special issue, which is the third one in its series, provides an international forum for researchers to disseminate their results and ideas to tackle some of these challenging research problems. Five dedicated papers have contributed to this special issue. These papers concern the mutual coupling and its impacts on MIMO communications, direction finding, and MIMO radar. To help interested readers with a quick reference to the main themes of these papers, we briefly introduce them as follows. The first paper entitled “Self-interference cancellation-based mutual-coupling model for full-duplex single-channel MIMO systems,” concerns the mutual coupling problem in MIMO communications. The paper addresses the self-interference and mutual-interference of a full-duplex single-channel MIMO communications system. In the presence of mutual coupling, the array manifold is perturbed, which results in poor accuracies in direction finding. The paper “Accurate DOA estimations using microstrip adaptive arrays in the presence of mutual coupling effect” proposes a method to calibrate the undesirable mutual coupling effect for arrays with non-omni-directional radiating elements. The third paper, entitled “2-D direction of arrival estimation for cross array in the presence of mutual coupling,” introduces a noniterative algorithm based on the Propagation Method for accurate two-dimensional direction finding problems using a cross array in the presence of mutual coupling. The paper “AR model-based direction-of-arrival estimation of coherent signals in the presence of unknown mutual coupling” provides a novel signal processing solution based on a spatial autoregression (AR) model for coherent direction finding of uniform linear arrays. The fifth paper of this special issue, entitled “Root-MUSIC based angle estimation for MIMO radar with unknown mutual coupling,” explores the direction finding solutions in MIMO radar. A Root-MUSIC based solution is proposed to estimate the incoming signal direction with unknown mutual coupling. All papers appearing in this special issue have been subject to a strict peer-reviewing process. They are of high quality and address the mutual coupling problem from different perspectives. Through this special issue, we have provided a medium of dissemination for valuable ideas and conclusions on mutual coupling research. At the same time, we hope that more research innovations can be stimulated for future advances on this subject.

  • Cluster observations in the inner magnetosphere during the 18 April 2002 sawtooth event : Dipolarization and injection at r=4.6 R-E
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 112:A8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examines a sawtooth injection event that took place around 0800 UT on 18 April 2002 when the Cluster spacecraft were located in the inner magnetosphere in the premidnight sector. In association with this injection, Cluster, at a radial distance of 4.6 RE, observed that the local magnetic field became more dipolar and that both ion and electron fluxes increased without notable energy dispersion. These features were accompanied by intensifications of the equatorward component of a double- oval structure and also by an enhancement of the ring- current oxygen ENA flux. The event was also accompanied by large magnetic field ( a few tens of nT) and electric field ( a few tens of mV/ m) fluctuations with characteristic timescales of a few tens of seconds. These observations strongly suggest that this sawtooth injection extended not only widely in local time but also deeply into the inner magnetosphere. Interestingly, Cluster repeatedly observed dipolarization- like signatures afterward, which, however, were not associated with enhancements of local energetic ion flux or with geosynchronous dipolarization or injection signatures. Instead, these magnetic signatures were accompanied by oscillatory plasma motion in the radial direction with a characteristic timescale of about 10 min, which appears to be related to the westward propagation of a spatially periodic auroral structure. The associated azimuthal electric field component was well correlated with the time derivative of the north- south magnetic field component, suggesting that the observed electric field is inductive. These findings suggest that electromagnetic processes far inside geosynchronous orbit play an important role in energization of energetic ions and auroral dynamics during magnetospheric storms.

  • Role of microRNAs and microRNA machinery in the pathogenesis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Blood Cancer Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2044-5385. ; 3, s. e152-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deregulation of microRNA (miRNA) expression has been documented in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). However, the impact of miRNAs and their machinery in DLBCL is not fully determined. Here, we assessed the role of miRNA expression and their processing genes in DLBCL development. Using microarray and RT-qPCR approaches, we quantified global miRNAs and core components of miRNA-processing genes expression in 75 DLBCLs (56 de novo and 19 transformed) and 10 lymph nodes (LN). Differential miRNA signatures were identified between DLBCLs and LNs, or between the de novo and transformed DLBCLs. We also identified subsets of miRNAs associated with germinal center B-cell phenotype, BCL6 and IRF4 expression, and clinical staging. In addition, we showed a significant over-expression of TARBP2 in de novo DLBCLs as compared with LNs, and decreased expression of DROSHA, DICER, TARBP2 and PACT in transformed as compared with de novo cases. Interestingly, cases with high TARBP2 and DROSHA expression had a poorer chemotherapy response. We further showed that TARBP2 can regulate miRNA-processing efficiency in DLBCLs, and its expression inhibition decreases cell growth and increases apoptosis in DLBCL cell lines. Our findings provide new insights for the understanding of miRNAs and its machinery in DLBCL.

  • The der(17)t(X;17)(p11;q25) of human alveolar soft part sarcoma fuses the TFE3 transcription factor gene to ASPL, a novel gene at 17q25
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Oncogene. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-5594 .- 0950-9232. ; 20:1, s. 48-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is an unusual tumor with highly characteristic histopathology and ultrastructure, controversial histogenesis, and enigmatic clinical behavior. Recent cytogenetic studies have identified a recurrent der(17) due to a non-reciprocal t(X;17)(p11.2;q25) in this sarcoma. To define the interval containing the Xp11.2 break, we first performed FISH on ASPS cases using YAC probes for OATL1 (Xp11.23) and OATL2 (Xp11.21), and cosmid probes from the intervening genomic region. This localized the breakpoint to a 160 kb interval. The prime candidate within this previously fully sequenced region was TFE3, a transcription factor gene known to be fused to translocation partners on 1 and X in some papillary renal cell carcinomas. Southern blotting using a TFE3 genomic probe identified non-germline bands in several ASPS cases, consistent with rearrangement and possible fusion of TFE3 with a gene on 17q25. Amplification of the 5' portion of cDNAs containing the 3' portion of TFE3 in two different ASPS cases identified a novel sequence, designated ASPL, fused in-frame to TFE3 exon 4 (type 1 fusion) or exon 3 (type 2 fusion). Reverse transcriptase PCR using a forward primer from ASPL and a TFE3 exon 4 reverse primer detected an ASPL-TFE3 fusion transcript in all ASPS cases (12/12: 9 type 1, 3 type 2), establishing the utility of this assay in the diagnosis of ASPS. Using appropriate primers, the reciprocal fusion transcript, TFE3-ASPL, was detected in only one of 12 cases, consistent with the non-reciprocal nature of the translocation in most cases, and supporting ASPL-TFE3 as its oncogenically significant fusion product. ASPL maps to chromosome 17, is ubiquitously expressed, and matches numerous ESTs (Unigene cluster Hs.84128) but no named genes. The ASPL cDNA open reading frame encodes a predicted protein of 476 amino acids that contains within its carboxy-terminal portion of a UBX-like domain that shows significant similarity to predicted proteins of unknown function in several model organisms. The ASPL-TFE3 fusion replaces the N-terminal portion of TFE3 by the fused ASPL sequences, while retaining the TFE3 DNA-binding domain, implicating transcriptional deregulation in the pathogenesis of this tumor, consistent with the biology of several other translocation-associated sarcomas.

  • Isolation of Alkaline-tolerant Bacteria from Primary Infected Root Canals
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Endodontics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0099-2399. ; 41:4, s. 451-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Alkaline-tolerant bacteria in primary infected root canals could have enhanced survival capacity against antimicrobials commonly used in root canal treatment. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterize alkaline-tolerant bacteria before endodontic treatment (S1), after chemomechariital root canal preparation (S2), and after calcium hydroxide dressing (S3). Methods: Bacteriologic samples were obtained from 43 primary infected root canals. Samples were inoculated into culture media at a pH of 9 and incubated anaerobically. The identities of bacterial isolates were determined by 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Results: All S1 samples were culture positive, with 70% harboring bacteria tolerating a pH of 9. Gram-positive bacteria Pseudoramibacter alactolyticus and Streptococcus spp were the most frequently isolated strains with a prevalence of 54%. Of 13 culture-positive S2 samples, 8 isolates tolerated a pH of 9, namely Streptococcus sanguinis, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterobacter cancerogen us, Streptococcus oralis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Seven of these 8 isolates (88%) were correspondingly isolated at S1. All 3 culture-positive S3 samples tolerated a pH of 9, namely S. sanguinis and E. faecalis, which were also isolated in the corresponding S1 and S2 samples. Conclusions: We showed that the presence of alkaline-tolerant Streptococcus and Enterococcus spp in primary infected root canals could lead to their persistence during and after root canal treatment and could pose a challenge to current treatment efficacy.

  • Reasons for Discontinuing Active Surveillance : Assessment of 21 Centres in 12 Countries in the Movember GAP3 Consortium
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Urology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0302-2838. ; 75:3, s. 523-531
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Careful assessment of the reasons for discontinuation of active surveillance (AS) is required for men with prostate cancer (PCa). Objective: Using Movember's Global Action Plan Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance initiative (GAP3) database, we report on reasons for AS discontinuation. Design, setting, and participants: We compared data from 10 296 men on AS from 21 centres across 12 countries. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Cumulative incidence methods were used to estimate the cumulative incidence rates of AS discontinuation. Results and limitations: During 5-yr follow-up, 27.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 26.4–28.6%) men showed signs of disease progression, 12.8% (95% CI: 12.0–13.6%) converted to active treatment without evidence of progression, 1.7% (95% CI: 1.5–2.0%) continued to watchful waiting, and 1.7% (95% CI: 1.4–2.1%) died from other causes. Of the 7049 men who remained on AS, 2339 had follow-up for >5 yr, 4561 had follow-up for <5 yr, and 149 were lost to follow-up. Cumulative incidence of progression was 27.5% (95% CI: 26.4–28.6%) at 5 yr and 38.2% (95% CI: 36.7–39.9%) at 10 yr. A limitation is that not all centres were included due to limited information on the reason for discontinuation and limited follow-up. Conclusions: Our descriptive analyses of current AS practices worldwide showed that 43.6% of men drop out of AS during 5-yr follow-up, mainly due to signs of disease progression. Improvements in selection tools for AS are thus needed to correctly allocate men with PCa to AS, which will also reduce discontinuation due to conversion to active treatment without evidence of disease progression. Patient summary: Our assessment of a worldwide database of men with prostate cancer (PCa) on active surveillance (AS) shows that 43.6% drop out of AS within 5 yr, mainly due to signs of disease progression. Better tools are needed to select and monitor men with PCa as part of AS.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Space-time techniques like MIMO, diversity reception and direction finding all require multiport antenna arrays. In mobile applications, the size-limited platforms demand compact arrays with element spacing significantly smaller than λ/2. The small element spacing introduces strong mutual coupling between the elements of such compact arrays. For application of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using typical DOA estimation algorithms, for example MUSIC [1], the mutual coupling effect between antenna elements significantly contributes to the estimation error. Many compensation methods have been proposed in previous studies [2] -[3]. The most commonly used one is the conventional mutual impedance method (CMIM) proposed in [4] . Recently, a modified concept of mutual impedance in receiving antenna arrays, the receiving mutual impedance, was proposed in [5]. This method is called the receiving mutual impedance method (RMIM). Theoretical studies have shown that much higher accuracies for DOA estimations can be achieved when the mutual coupling in receiving arrays are characterized using the RMIM than the CMIM. The current study is to provide experimental evidence on this. In this paper, a seven-element monopole array with element spacing of 0.2λ was used in the experiments. Both the receiving mutual impedances and the conventional mutual impedances of the array were measured. A series DOA experiments were then performed with one and two signal sources generated by transmitting antennas inside the anechoic chamber. © 2010 IEEE.

  • Improved DOA Estimations Using the Receiving Mutual Impedances for Mutual Coupling Compensation: An Experimental Study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1558-2248 .- 1536-1276. ; 10:7, s. 2228-2233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental study is performed to investigate the improvement of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation using the recently proposed receiving mutual impedances for mutual coupling compensation. A seven-monopole antenna array is constructed and used in DOA estimation employing the MUSIC algorithm. Comparisons are made with the case of using the conventional mutual impedances for mutual coupling compensation. All experiments are carried out inside an anechoic chamber. Results are obtained for one-and two-source experiments which indicate that the performance of DOA estimation in the presence of mutual coupling can be significantly improved when the mutual coupling effect is compensated by using the receiving mutual impedances.

  • Sex Differences in Overall Survival and the Effect of Radiotherapy in Merkel Cell Carcinoma-A Retrospective Analysis of a Swedish Cohort
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cancers. - : MDPI AG. - 2072-6694. ; 13:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive skin cancer where Merkel cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV) contributes to the pathogenesis. In an adjuvant setting, radiotherapy (RT) is believed to give a survival benefit. The prognostic impact of sex related to MCPyV-status and adjuvant RT were analyzed in patients referred to Karolinska University Hospital. Data were collected from 113 patients’ hospital records and MCPyV analyses were made in 54 patients (48%). We found a significantly better overall survival (OS) for women compared to men and a significant difference in OS in patients receiving adjuvant RT. Furthermore, we found that men with virus negative MCC have an increased risk for earlier death (HR 3.6). This indicates that MCPyV positive and negative MCC act as two different diseases, and it might be due to different mechanism in the immune response between male and female patients. This could have significance in tailoring treatment and follow-up in MCC patients in the future.

  • On the use of different polarization measurements in microwave imaging of breast cancer tumors
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE Conference on Antenna Measurements and Applications, CAMA 2014, Antibes Juan-les-Pins; France; 16 November 2014 through 19 November 2014. - 9781479936786 ; , s. Art. no. 7003336-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the use of different polarization data in microwave image reconstruction is investigated. The present study is based on numerical simulation data of a generic breast phantom, and a time domain FDTD based reconstruction method. In general, reconstruction results are be both application and algorithm dependent. The results show very different reconstructed images when using different polarization data. We conclude that polarization could be an important factor to consider when optimizing the design of a microwave imaging system.
