  • Combination of Tevatron Searches for the Standard Model Higgs Boson in the W+W- Decay Mode
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 104:6, s. 061802-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We combine searches by the CDF and D0 Collaborations for a Higgs boson decaying to W+W-. The data correspond to an integrated total luminosity of 4.8 (CDF) and 5.4 (D0) fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No excess is observed above background expectation, and resulting limits on Higgs boson production exclude a standard model Higgs boson in the mass range 162-166 GeV at the 95% C.L.

  • Overview of the JET preparation for deuterium-tritium operation with the ITER like-wall
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 59:11
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D-T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D-T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D-T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D-T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D-T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfven eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems...) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D-T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D-T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

  • Evidence of 9 Be + p nuclear reactions during 2ω CH and hydrogen minority ICRH in JET-ILW hydrogen and deuterium plasmas
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 58:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intensity of 9Be + p nuclear fusion reactions was experimentally studied during second harmonic (2ω CH) ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) and further analyzed during fundamental hydrogen minority ICRH of JET-ILW hydrogen and deuterium plasmas. In relatively low-density plasmas with a high ICRH power, a population of fast H+ ions was created and measured by neutral particle analyzers. Primary and secondary nuclear reaction products, due to 9Be + p interaction, were observed with fast ion loss detectors, γ-ray spectrometers and neutron flux monitors and spectrometers. The possibility of using 9Be(p, d)2α and 9Be(p, α)6Li nuclear reactions to create a population of fast alpha particles and study their behaviour in non-active stage of ITER operation is discussed in the paper.

  • Beryllium coatings on metals for marker tiles at JET : development of process and characterization of layers
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T128, s. 157-161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preparatory study for the operation of the JET tokamak with a full metal wall (ITER-like wall project) also comprises several activities aiming at the development of thin beryllium coatings. The purpose is 2-fold: ( i) to coat Inconel (R) tiles of the inner wall cladding; (ii) to develop methods for production of films for so-called marker tiles in order to enable monitoring of Be erosion from limiters. Properties of the marker film must match, as closely as possible, those of bulk Be. The first step in the R&D process was to assess coating methods and the quality of layers deposited on test coupons. Smooth, dense Be films of high purity and good adhesion to the substrate were deposited with an average deposition rate of 5 +/- 0.5 nm s(-1) to a thickness of 7.5 mu m. A marker structure consisting of a 7.5 mu m Be film on top of a 2.5 mu m Ni interlayer deposited on a bulk Be block has been developed and characterized by means of material analysis methods. An overview of manufacturing processes and properties of the marker coatings is presented.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report for the first time on the ability of Raman microscopy to give information on the structure and composition of Be related samples mimicking plasma facing materials that will be found in ITER. For that purpose, we investigate two types of material. First: Be, W, Be1W9, and Be5W5 deposits containing a few percents of D or N, and second: a Mo mirror exposed to plasma in the main JET chamber (in the framework of the first mirror test in JET with ITER-like wall). We performed atomic quantifications using ion beam analysis for the first samples. We also did atomic force microscopy. We found defect induced Raman bands in Be, Be1W9, and Be5W5 deposits. Molybdenum oxide has been identified showing an enhancement due to a resonance effect in the UV domain.

  • Tevatron Run II combination of the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 97:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced in the process p (p) over bar -> l(+)l(-) + X through an intermediate gamma*/Z boson have an asymmetry in their angular distribution related to the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the electroweak force and the associated mixing of its neutral gauge bosons. The CDF and D0 experiments have measured the effective-leptonic electroweak mixing parameter sin(2) theta(lept)(eff) using electron and muon pairs selected from the full Tevatron proton-antiproton data sets collected in 2001-2011, corresponding to 9-10 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The combination of these measurements yields the most precise result from hadron colliders, sin(2)theta(lept)(eff) = 0.23148 +/- 0.00033. This result is consistent with, and approaches in precision, the best measurements from electron-positron colliders. The standard model inference of the on-shell electroweak mixing parameter sin(2) theta(W), or equivalently the W-boson mass M-W, using the ZFITTER software package yields sin(2) theta(W) = 0.22324 +/- 0.00033 or equivalently, M-W = 80.367 +/- 0.017 GeV/c(2).

  • Characterization and heat flux testing of beryllium coatings on Inconel for JET ITER-like wall project
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949 .- 1402-4896. ; T128, s. 166-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to perform a fully integrated material test, JET has launched the ITER-like wall project with the aim of installing a full metal wall during the next major shutdown. The material foreseen for the main chamber wall is bulk Be at the limiters and Be coatings on inconel tiles elsewhere. R&D process comprises global characterization ( structure, purity etc) of the evaporated films and testing of their performance under heat loads. The major results are (i) the layers have survived energy loads of 20 MJ m(-2) which is significantly above the required level of 5 - 10 MJ m(-2), (ii) melting limit of beryllium coating would be at the energy level of 30 MJ m(-2), (iii) cyclic thermal load of 10 MJ m(-2) for up to 50 cycles have not induced any noticeable damage such as flaking or detachment.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Fusion engineering and design. - : Elsevier BV. - 0920-3796 .- 1873-7196. ; 83:7-9, s. 1072-1076
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ITER-Like Wall Project has been launched at JET in order to perform a fully integrated test of plasma-facing materials. During the next major shutdown a full metal wall will be installed: tungsten in the divertor and beryllium in the main chamber. Beryllium erosion is one of key issues to be addressed. Special marker tiles have been designed for this purpose. Test coupons of such markers have been manufactured and examined. The performance test under high power deposition was carried in the electron beam facility JUDITH. The results of material characterization before and after high heat flux loads are presented. The samples survived, without macroscopic damage, power loads of up to 4.5 MW/m(2) for 10s (surface temperature similar to 650 degrees C) and 50 cyclic loads at 3.5 MW/m(2) lasting 10s each (surface temperature similar to 600 degrees C).

  • Beryllium melting and erosion on the upper dump plates in JET during three ITER-like wall campaigns
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 59:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data on erosion and melting of beryllium upper limiter tiles, so-called dump plates (DP), are presented for all three campaigns in the JET tokamak with the ITER-like wall. High-resolution images of the upper wall of JET show clear signs of flash melting on the ridge of the roofshaped tiles. The melt layers move in the poloidal direction from the inboard to the outboard tile, ending on the last DP tile with an upward going waterfall-like melt structure. Melting was caused mainly by unmitigated plasma disruptions. During three ILW campaigns, around 15% of all 12376 plasma pulses were catalogued as disruptions. Thermocouple data from the upper dump plates tiles showed a reduction in energy delivered by disruptions with fewer extreme events in the third campaign, ILW-3, in comparison to ILW-1 and ILW-2. The total Be erosion assessed via precision weighing of tiles retrieved from JET during shutdowns indicated the increasing mass loss across campaigns of up to 0.6 g from a single tile. The mass of splashed melted Be on the upper walls was also estimated using the high-resolution images of wall components taken after each campaign. The results agree with the total material loss estimated by tile weighing (similar to 130 g). Morphological and structural analysis performed on Be melt layers revealed a multilayer structure of re-solidified material composed mainly of Be and BeO with some heavy metal impurities Ni, Fe, W. IBA analysis performed across the affected tile ridge in both poloidal and toroidal direction revealed a low D concentration, in the range 1-4 x 10(17) D atoms cm(-2).

  • Erosion at the inner wall of JET during the discharge campaign 2011-2012 in comparison with previous campaigns
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3115 .- 1873-4820. ; 456, s. 106-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The erosion of Be and W marker layers was investigated using long-term samples during the first ITER-like wall discharge campaign 2011-2012. The markers were mounted in Be coated Inconel tiles between the inner wall guard limiters (IWGL). They were analyzed using Rutherford backscattering (RBS) before and after exposure. All samples showed strong erosion. The results were compared to the data for Be and W erosion rates for the 2005-2009 and the 2001-2004 campaigns, respectively, when JET was operated with a carbon wall. In 2005-2009 Be and C samples were used, and W samples were used in 2001-2004. The mean W erosion rates and the toroidal and poloidal distributions of the W erosion were the same for the 2001-2004 and the 2011-2012 campaigns. The mean erosion rate of Be during the 2011-2012 campaign was smaller by a factor of about two compared to the 2005-2009 campaign and showed a different poloidal distribution. The mean erosion rate of the inner JET ITER-like wall was about 4-5 times smaller than the mean erosion rate of the carbon wall.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The erosion of Be and W marker layers was investigated using long-term samples containing marker layers during the second ITER-like wall discharge campaign 2013-2014 (ILW-2). The samples were mounted in Be coated Inconel tiles between the inner wall guard limiters (IWGL). They were analyzed using elastic backscattering (EBS) before and after exposure. All samples showed noticeable erosion. The results were compared to the data for Be and W erosion rates for the first 2011-2012 JET ITER-like wall (ILW-1) campaign, and to the data for C erosion during the 2005-2009 campaign when JET was operated with a carbon wall. The mean W erosion rates and the toroidal and poloidal distributions of the W erosion were nearly the same for the ILW-1 and ILW-2 campaigns. The mean erosion rate of Be during the ILW-2 campaign was smaller by a factor of about two compared to the ILW-1 campaign.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 47:3, s. 222-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the ITER-like wall project at JET the present main chamber CFC tiles will be exchanged with Be tiles and in parallel a fully tungsten-clad divertor will be prepared. Therefore three R&D programmes were initiated: Be coatings on Inconel as well as Be erosion markers were developed for the first wall of the main chamber. High heat flux screening and cyclic loading tests carried out on the Be coatings on Inconel showed excellent performance, above the required power and energy density. For the divertor a conceptual design for a bulk W horizontal target plate was investigated, with the emphasis on minimizing electromagnetic forces. The design consisted of stacks of W lamellae of 6 mm width that were insulated in the toroidal direction. High heat flux tests of a test module were performed with an electron beam at an absorbed power density Up to 9 MW m(-2) for more than 150 pulses and finally with increasing power loads leading to surface temperatures in excess of 3000 degrees C. No macroscopic failure occurred during the test while SEM showed the development of micro-cracks on the loaded surface. For all other divertor parts R&D was performed to provide the technology to coat the 2-directional CFC material used at JET with thin tungsten coatings. The W-coated CFC tiles were subjected to heat loads with power densities ranging up to 23.5 MW m(-2) and exposed to cyclic heat loading for 200 pulses at 10.5 MW m(-2). All coatings developed cracks perpendicular to the CFC fibres due to the stronger contraction of the coating upon cool-down after the heat pulses.

  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3115 .- 1873-4820. ; 438, s. S1204-S1207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents scientific and technical issues related to the development of erosion-deposition diagnostic tools for JET operated with the ITER-Like Wall: beryllium and tungsten marker tiles and several types of wall probes installed in the main chamber and in the divertor. Markers tiles are the standard limiter and divertor components additionally coated first with a thin sandwich of Ni-Be and Mo-W for, beryllium and tungsten markers, respectively. Both types of markers are embedded in regular arrays of limiter and divertor tiles. Coated W-Be probes are also inserted in the Be-covered Inconel cladding tiles on the central column. Other types of erosion-deposition diagnostic tools are: rotating collectors, deposition traps, louver clips, quartz microbalance and mirrors for the First Mirror Test at JET for ITER. The specific role of these tools is discussed in detail.

  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Fusion science and technology. - 1536-1055 .- 1943-7641. ; 62:1, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chosen materials for plasma facing components for the deuterium/tritium phase of ITER are beryllium and tungsten. These materials have already been widely investigated in various devices like ion beam or electron beam tests. However, the operation of this material combination in a large tokamak including plasma wall interaction, material degradation, erosion and material mixing has not been proven yet. The ITER-like Wall, which has been recently installed in JET, consists of a combination of bulk tungsten and tungsten coated CFC divertor tiles as well as bulk beryllium and beryllium coated INCONEL in the main chamber. The experiments in JET will provide the first fully representative test of the ITER material choice under relevant conditions. This paper concentrates on material research and developments for the materials of the JET ITER-like Wall with respect to mechanical and thermal properties. The impact of these materials and components on the JET operating limits with the ITER-like Wall and implications for the ongoing scientific program will be summarised.

  • Adhesive force distributions for tungsten dust deposited on bulk tungsten and beryllium-coated tungsten surfaces
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Materials and Energy. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 2352-1791. ; 15, s. 55-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comprehensive measurements of the adhesive force for tungsten dust adhered to tungsten surfaces have been performed with the electrostatic detachment method. Monodisperse spherical dust has been deposited with gas dynamics techniques or with gravity mimicking adhesion as it naturally occurs in tokamaks. The adhesive force is confirmed to follow the log-normal distribution and empirical correlations are proposed for the size-dependence of its mean and standard deviation. Systematic differences are observed between the two deposition methods and attributed to plastic deformation during sticking impacts. The presence of thin beryllium coatings on tungsten surfaces is demonstrated to barely affect adhesion.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). ; T167
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • JET components are removed periodically for surface analysis to assess material migration and fuel retention. This paper describes issues related to handling JET components and procedures for preparing samples for analysis; in particular a newly developed procedure for cutting beryllium tiles is presented. Consideration is also given to the hazards likely due to increased tritium inventory and material activation from 14 MeV neutrons following the planned TT and DT operations (DTE2) in 2017. Conclusions are drawn as to the feasibility of handling components from JET post DTE2.
