    • The study aims to conduct big data analysis (BDA) on the massive data generated in the smart city Internet of things (IoT), make the smart city change to the direction of fine governance and efficient and safe data processing. Aiming at the multi-source data collected in the smart city, the study introduces the deep learning (DL) algorithm while using BDA, and puts forward the distributed parallelism strategy of convolutional neural network (CNN). Meantime, the digital twins (DTs) and multi-hop transmission technology are introduced to construct the smart city DTs multi-hop transmission IoT-BDA system based on DL, and further simulate and analyze the performance of the system. The results reveal that in the energy efficiency analysis of model data transmission, the energy efficiency first increases and then decrease as the minimum energy collected α0 increases. But a more suitable power diversion factor ρ is crucial to the signal transmission energy efficiency of the IoT-BDA system. The prediction accuracy of the model is analyzed and it suggests that the accuracy of the constructed system reaches 97.80%, which is at least 2.24% higher than the DL algorithm adopted by other scholars. Regarding the data transmission performance of the constructed system, it is found that when the successful transmission probability is 100% and the exponential distribution parameters λ is valued 0.01∼0.05, it is the closest to the actual result, and the data delay is the smallest, which is maintained at the ms level. To sum up, improving the smart city’s IoT-BDA system using the DL approach can reduce data transmission delay, improve data forecasting accuracy, and offer actual efficacy, providing experimental references for the digital development of smart cities in the future.

  • The Genome of Artemisia annua Provides Insight into the Evolution of Asteraceae Family and Artemisinin Biosynthesis

    • Artemisia annua, commonly known as sweet wormwood or Qinghao, is a shrub native to China and has long been used for medicinal purposes. A. annua is now cultivated globally as the only natural source of a potent anti-malarial compound, artemisinin. Here, we report a high-quality draft assembly of the 1.74-gigabase genome of A. annua, which is highly heterozygous, rich in repetitive sequences, and contains 63 226 protein-coding genes, one of the largest numbers among the sequenced plant species. We found that, as one of a few sequenced genomes in the Asteraceae, the A. annua genome contains a large number of genes specific to this large angiosperm clade. Notably, the expansion and functional diversification of genes encoding enzymes involved in terpene biosynthesis are consistent with the evolution of the artemisinin biosynthetic pathway. We further revealed by transcriptome profiling that A. annua has evolved the sophisticated transcriptional regulatory networks underlying artemisinin biosynthesis. Based on comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analyses we generated transgenic A. annua lines producing high levels of artemisinin, which are now ready for large-scale production and thereby will help meet the challenge of increasing global demand of artemisinin.

  • Amplitude analysis of the pi(0)pi(0) system produced in radiative J/psi decays

    • An amplitude analysis of the pi(0)pi(0) system produced in radiative J/psi decays is presented. In particular, a piecewise function that describes the dynamics of the pi(0)pi(0) system is determined as a function of M pi(0)pi(0) from an analysis of the (1.311 +/- 0.011) x 10(9) J/psi decays collected by the BESIII detector. The goal of this analysis is to provide a description of the scalar and tensor components of the pi(0)pi(0) system while making minimal assumptions about the properties or number of poles in the amplitude. Such a model-independent description allows one to integrate these results with other related results from complementary reactions in the development of phenomenological models, which can then be used to directly fit experimental data to obtain parameters of interest. The branching fraction of J/psi -> pi(0)pi(0) is determined to be (1.15 +/- 0.05) x 10(-3), where the uncertainty is systematic only and the statistical uncertainty is negligible.

  • An improved limit for Gamma(ee) of X(3872) and Gamma(ee) measurement of psi(3686)

    • Using the data sets taken at center-of-mass energies above 4 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we search for the reaction e(+)e(-) -> gamma(ISR) X(3872) -> gamma(ISR)pi(+)pi(-) J/psi via the Initial State Radiation technique. The production of a resonance with quantum numbers J(PC) = 1(++) such as the X(3872) via single photon e(+)e(-) annihilation is forbidden, but is allowed by a next-to-leading order box diagram. We do not observe a significant signal of X(3872), and therefore give an upper limit for the electronic width times the branching fraction Gamma B-X(3872)(ee)(X(3872) -> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi) < 0.13 eVat the 90% confidence level. This measurement improves upon existing limits by a factor of 46. Using the same final state, we also measure the electronic width of the psi(3686) to be Gamma(psi)(ee)(3686) ee = 2213 +/- 18(stat) +/- 99(sys) eV.

  • Dark photon search in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/c

    • Using a data set of 2.93 fb taken at a center-of-mass energy root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. We examine the initial state radiation reactions e(+)e(-) -> e(+)e(-) gamma(ISR) and e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-) gamma(ISR) for this search, where the dark photon would appear as an enhancement in the invariant mass distribution of the leptonic pairs. We observe no obvious enhancement in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/c(2) and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the mixing strength of the dark photon and the Standard Model photon. We obtain a competitive limit in the tested mass range.

    • We report a measurement of the branching fraction for psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c1) and search for the transition psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c2) based on 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) data accumulated at root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. We measure B(psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c1)) = (2.48 +/- 0.15 +/- 0.23) x 10(-3), which is the most precise measurement to date. The upper limit on the branching fraction of psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c2) at a 90% confidence level is B(psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c2)) < 0.64 x 10(-3). The corresponding partial widths are Gamma(psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c1)) = (67.5 +/- 4.1 +/- 6.7)keV and Gamma(psi(3770) -> gamma chi(c2)) < 17.4 keV.

  • Measurement of the branching fractions of D-s(+) -> eta ' X and D-s(+) -> eta 'rho(+) in e(+)e(-) -> Ds+Ds-

    • We study D-s(+) decays to final states involving the eta' with a 482 pb(-1) data sample collected at root s = 4.009 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. We measure the branching fractions B(D-s(+) -> eta'X) = (8.8 +/- 1.8 +/- 0.5)% and B(D-s(+) > eta'rho(+)) = (5.8 +/- 1.4 +/- 0.4)% where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, we estimate an upper limit on the non-resonant branching ratio B(D-s(+) -> eta'pi(+)pi(0)) < 5.1% at the 90% confidence level. Our results are consistent with CLEO's recent measurements and help to resolve the disagreement between the theoretical prediction and CLEO's previous measurement of B(D-s(+) -> eta'rho(+)).

  • Measurement of the leptonic decay width of J/psi using initial state radiation

    • Using a data set of 2.93 fb(-1) taken at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the process e(+) e(-) -> J/psi gamma -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma and determine the product of the branching fraction and the electronic width B-mu mu . Gamma(ee) = (333.4 +/- 2.5(stat) +/- 4.4(sys)) eV. Using the earlier-published BESIII result for B-mu mu = (5.973 +/- 0.007(stat) +/- 0.037(sys))%, we derive the J/psi electronic width Gamma(ee) = (5.58 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.08(sys)) keV.     • Based on a sample of 1.31 x 10(9) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, Dalitz plot analyses of selected 79,625 eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) events, 33,908 eta -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) events, and 1,888 eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) events are performed. The measured matrix elements of eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) are in reasonable agreement with previous measurements. The Dalitz plot slope parameters of eta -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) and eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) are determined to be -0.055 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.004 and -0.640 +/- 0.046 +/- 0.047, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both values are consistent with previous measurements, while the precision of the latter one is improved by a factor of 3. Final state interactions are found to have an important role in those decays.

  • Measurement of the proton form factor by studying e(+)e(-) -> p(p)over-tilde

    • Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the Born cross section of e(+)e(-) -> p (p) over tilde at 12 center-of-mass energies from 2232.4 to 3671.0 MeV. The corresponding effective electromagnetic form factor of the proton is deduced under the assumption that the electric and magnetic form factors are equal (vertical bar G(E)vertical bar = vertical bar G(M)vertical bar). In addition, the ratio of electric to magnetic form factors, vertical bar G(E)/G(M)vertical bar, and vertical bar G(M)vertical bar are extracted by fitting the polar angle distribution of the proton for the data samples with larger statistics, namely at root s = 2232.4 and 2400.0 MeV and a combined sample at root s = 3050.0, 3060.0 and 3080.0 MeV, respectively. The measured cross sections are in agreement with recent results from BABAR, improving the overall uncertainty by about 30%. The vertical bar G(E)/G(M)vertical bar ratios are close to unity and consistent with BABAR results in the same q(2) region, which indicates the data are consistent with the assumption that vertical bar G(E)vertical bar = vertical bar G(M)vertical bar within uncertainties.

    • Using a sample of 1.06 x 10(8) psi(3686) events produced in e(+)e(-) collisions at root s = 3.686 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present studies of the decays psi(3686) -> K-Lambda(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c. and psi(3686) -> gamma K-Lambda(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c. We observe two hyperons, Xi(1690)(-) and Xi(1820)(-), in the K-Lambda invariant mass distribution in the decay psi(3686) -> K-Lambda(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c. with significances of 4.9 sigma and 6.2 sigma, respectively. The branching fractions of psi(3686) -> K-Lambda(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c., psi(3686) -> K-Sigma(0)(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c, psi(3686) -> gamma chi cJ -> gamma K-Lambda(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c (J = 0, 1, 2), and psi(3686) -> Xi(1690/1820)(-)(Xi) over bar (+) + c.c with sub-sequent decay Xi(1690/1820)(-) -> K-Lambda are measured for the first time.

  • Observation and Spin-Parity Determination of the X(1835) in J/psi -> gamma(KSKS0)-K-0 eta

    • We report an observation of the process J/psi -> gamma X(1835) -> gamma(KSKS0)-K-0 eta at low (KSKS0)-K-0 mass with a statistical significance larger than 12.9s using a data sample of 1.31 x 109 J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector. In this region of phase space the (KSKS0)-K-0 system is dominantly produced through the f (0)(980). By performing a partial wave analysis, we determine the spin parity of the Xd1835_ to be J(PC) = 0(-+). The mass and width of the observed X(1835) are 1844 +/- 9(stat)(-25)(+16)(syst) MeV/c(2) and 192(-17)(+20)(sta)(-43)(+62)(syst) MeV, respectively, which are consistent with the results obtained by BESIII in the channel J/psi -> gamma pi(+)pi(-)eta'.

  • Observation of a Neutral Charmoniumlike State Z(c)(4025)(0) in e(+)e(-) -> (D*(D)over-bar*)(0)pi(0)

    • We report a study of the process e(+)e(-) -> (D*(D) over bar*)(0)pi(0) using e(+)e(-) collision data samples with integrated luminosities of 1092 pb(-1) at root s = 4.23 GeV and 826 pb(-1) at root s = 4.26 GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. We observe a new neutral structure near the (D*(D) over bar*)(0) mass threshold in the pi(0) recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as Z(c)(4025)(0). Assuming a Breit-Wigner line shape, its pole mass and pole width are determined to be (4025.5(-4.7)(+2.0) +/- 3.1) MeV/c(2) and (23.0 +/- 6.0 +/- 1.0) MeV, respectively. The Born cross sections of e(+)e(-) -> Z(c)(4025)(0)pi(0) -> (D*(D) over bar*)(0)pi(0) are measured to be (61.6 +/- 8.2 +/- 9.0) pb at root s = 4.23 GeV and (43.4 +/- 8.0 +/- 5.4) pb at root s = 4.26 GeV. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

  • Observation of the Dalitz decay eta ' -> gamma e(+)e(-)

    • We report the first observation of the Dalitz decay eta' -> gamma e(+)e(-), based on a data sample of 1.31 billion J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector. The eta' mesons are produced via the J/psi -> gamma eta' decay process. The ratio (eta' -> gamma e(+)e(-))/Gamma (eta' -> gamma gamma) is measured to be (2.13 +/- 0.09(stat) +/- 0.07(sys)) x 10(-2). This corresponds to a branching fraction B(eta' -> gamma e(+)e(-)) = (4.69 +/- 0.20(stat) +/- 0.23(sys)) x 10(-4). The transition form factor is extracted and different expressions are compared to the measured dependence on the e(+)e(-) invariant mass. The results are consistent with the prediction of the vector meson dominance model.

  • Observation of the electromagnetic doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/psi -> phi pi(0)

    • Using a sample of 1.31 billion J/psi events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we report the observation of the decay J/psi -> phi pi(0), which is the first evidence for a doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka suppressed electromagnetic J/psi decay. A clear structure is observed in the K+K- mass spectrum around 1.02 GeV/c(2), which can be attributed to interference between J/psi -> phi pi(0) and J/psi -> K+K- pi(0) decays. Due to this interference, two possible solutions are found. The corresponding measured values of the branching fraction of J/psi -> phi pi(0) are [2.94 +/- 0.16(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)] x 10(-6) and [1.24 +/- 0.33(stat) +/- 0.30(syst)] x 10(-7).

    • Using a sample of 1.31 x 10(9) J/psi events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the decays J/psi -> phi pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and J/psi -> phi pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) are investigated. The isospin- violating decay J/psi -> phi pi(0)f(0)(980) with f(0)(980)-> pi pi is observed for the first time. The width of the f(0)(980) obtained from the dipion mass spectrum is found to be much smaller than the world average value. In the pi(0)f(0)(980) mass spectrum, there is evidence of f(1)(1285) production. By studying the decay J/psi ->eta', the branching fractions of eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0), as well as their ratio, are also measured.

    • We report the observation of the X(3823) state in the process e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-) X(3823) pi(+)pi(-)gamma chi(c1) with a statistical significance of 6.2 sigma, in data samples at center-of-mass energies root s = 4.230, 4.260, 4.360, 4.420, and 4.600 GeV collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII electron positron collider. The measured mass of the X(3823) state is (3821.7 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.7) MeV/c(2), where the first error is statistical and the second systematic, and the width is less than 16 MeV at the 90% confidence level. The products of the Born cross sections for e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-) X(3823) and the branching ratio B [X(3823) -> gamma X-c1c2] are also measured. These measurements are in good agreement with the assignment of the X(3823) state as the Psi(1(3)D(2)) charmonium state.

  • Observation of Z(c)(3900)(0) in e(+)e(-) -> pi(0)pi(0) J/Psi

    • Using a data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we observe a new neutral state Z(c)(3900)(0) with a significance of 10.4 sigma. The mass and width are measured to be 3894.8 +/- 2.3 +/- 3.2 MeV/c(2) and 29.6 +/- 8.2 +/- 8.2 MeV, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The Born cross section for e(+)e(-) -> pi(0)pi(0) J/Psi and the fraction of it attributable to pi(0)Z(c)(3900)(0) -> pi(0)pi(0) J/Psi in the range E-c.m. = 4.19-4.42 GeV are also determined. We interpret this state as the neutral partner of the four-quark candidate Z(c)(3900)(+/-).

  • Search for D-0 -> gamma gamma and improved measurement of the branching fraction for D-0 -> pi(0)pi(0)

    • Using 2.92 fb(-1) of electron-positron annihilation data collected at root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the results of a search for the flavor-changing neutral current process D-0 -> gamma gamma using a double-tag technique. We find no signal and set an upper limit at 90% confidence level for the branching fraction of B(D-0 -> gamma gamma < 3.8 x 10(-6). We also investigate D-0-meson decay into two neutral pions, obtaining a branching fraction of B(D-0 -> pi(0)pi(0)) = (8.24 +/- 0.21(stat) +/- 0.30(syst)) x 10(-4), the most precise measurement to date and consistent with the current world average.

No significant signal for the Z(c)(3900)(+/-) is found, and upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the Born cross section for the process e(+)e(-) -> Z(c)(3900)(+/-) pi(-/+) -> omega pi(+)pi(-) are determined to be 0.26 and 0.18 pb at root s = 4.23 and 4.26 GeV, respectively.

The measurements are performed using 106 x 10(6) psi(3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the psi(3686) mass. We obtained upper limits on the branching fractions at a 90% confidence level of B(chi(c0) -> pi(0)eta(c)) < 1.6 x 10(-3) and B(chi(c2) -> pi(0)eta(c)) < 3.2 x 10(-3).

    • Using a data sample of 106 million psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII storage ring, we study for the first time the decays chi(cJ) -> phi(KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) and chi(cJ) -> phi K+K-pi(0) in the E1 radiative transition psi(3686) -> gamma chi(cJ). The decays are dominated by the three-body decay chi(cJ) -> phi K*(892)(K) over bar. We measure branching fractions for this reaction via the neutral and charged K*(892) and find them consistent with each other within the expectation of isospin symmetry. In the K (K) over bar pi invariant mass distribution, a structure near the K*(892)(K) over bar mass threshold is observed, and the corresponding mass and width are measured to be 1412 +/- 4(stat) +/- 8(sys) MeV/c(2) and Gamma = 84 +/- 12(stat) +/- 40(sys) MeV, respectively. The observed state favors an assignment to the h(1)(1380), considering its possible J(PC) and comparing its mass, width and decay mode to those reported in the Particle Data Group.

However, limited human data with inconsistent findings have examined the developmental effects of CPs exposure.Objective: To explore associations between prenatal and postnatal CPs exposure and anthropometric parameters in children aged 3 years.Methods: A subset of 377 mother-child pairs with urinary five CP concentrations were enrolled from a prospective birth cohort. Generalized linear models were conducted to evaluate associations of CPs exposure with children's anthropometric measures.Results: Maternal urinary 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) concentrations were significantly negatively associated with weight z scores [regression coefficient (beta)=-0.51, 95% confidence interval (Cl): -0.96, -0.05; p = 0.01], weight for height z scores (beta = -0.54, 95% Cl:-1.02, -0.06; p= 0.01) and body mass index (BMI) z scores (beta = -0.53, 95% CI;-1.03, 0.03; p = 0.01) of children aged 3 years, after adjustment for potential confounders and postnatal CPs exposure. In the sex-stratified analyses, these inverse associations remained among boys, while in girls, positive associations of prenatal 2,4,6-TCP exposure with weight for height z scores and BMI z scores were observed. Postnatal exposure to 2,5-diclorophenol (2,5-DCP) was positively associated with weight z scores (beta = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.50; p = 0.04), after controlling for possible confounders and maternal CPs exposure during pregnancy. Considering potential sex-specific effects, these associations were only observed in girls.Conclusions: Our findings indicate that prenatal 2,4,6-TCP exposure and postnatal 2,5-DCP exposure may have adverse and sex-specific effects on children's physical development.

    • Chlorpyrifos (CPF), an organophosphate insecticide, has been linked to adverse neurodevelopmental effects in animal studies. However, little is known about long-term neurotoxicity of early-life CPF exposure in humans. We aimed to evaluate the associations of both prenatal and early childhood CPF exposure with neurodevelopment of children. In this observational study based on Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort, pregnant women were recruited from an agricultural region between June 2009 and January 2010, and their children were followed up from birth to age three. Urinary 3,5,6-Trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), a specific metabolite of CPF, was quantified using large-volume-injection gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Developmental quotients (DQs) of children in motor, adaptive, language, and social areas were assessed by trained pediatricians. Data from 377 mother-child pairs were used in the current study. Associations between CPF exposure and neurodevelopmental indicators were estimated using generalized linear models with adjustment for potential confounders. The median concentrations of TCPy in maternal and children's urine were 5.39 mu g/L and 5.34 mu g/L, respectively. No statistically significant association was found between maternal urinary TCPy concentrations and children neurodevelopment. While for postnatal exposure, we found lower motor area DQ score 0.61 [95% confidence interval (CI): -1.13, -0.09; p = 0.02] and social area DQ score 0.55 (95% CI: -1.07, -0.03; p = 0.04) per one-unit increase in the In-transformed childhood urinary TCPy concentrations. Further stratification by sex indicated that the inverse associations were only observed in boys, but not in girls. Our findings suggest that adverse neurodevelopmental effects were associated with early childhood CPF exposure, but not prenatal exposure. Additional longitudinal studies are needed to replicate these results and to further understand the toxicological mechanisms of CPF.

Gesell Developmental Schedules (GDS) were used to assess child neurodevelopment at 3 years of age. Multivariate linear regression models were applied to estimate associations of prenatal and postnatal urinary triclosan concentrations with children's developmental quotients (DQs).RESULTS: Detection frequencies of triclosan in maternal and childhood urine samples were 100% and 99.5%, respectively. The median values of prenatal and postnatal urinary triclosan levels were 0.65 and 0.44 μg/L, respectively. One ln-unit increase of maternal urinary triclosan concentration was associated with increase of DQ scores in motor area of children (regression coefficient, β = 0.28, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.03, 0.54; p = 0.03). In sex-stratified analyses, maternal urinary triclosan levels were significantly related to increases in DQ scores in motor area among boys (β = 0.25, 95%CI: 0.01, 0.50; p = 0.04), while postnatal urinary triclosan concentrations were inversely associated with DQ scores in social area in boys (β = -0.37, 95%CI: -0.72, -0.03; p = 0.03).CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggested that prenatal triclosan exposure predicted increases in motor scores, while postnatal triclosan exposure was related to reductions in social scores of 3-year-old children. These associations were only observed in boys. The biological mechanisms linking triclosan exposure to neurodevelopment await further studies.

    • BACKGROUND: Environmental phenols, bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan (TCS), and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), are known as emerging endocrine-disrupting chemicals; however, their impacts on thyroid hormones and children's neurobehaviors are still unclear.OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the associations of prenatal and childhood exposure to phenols with neonatal thyroid function and childhood behavioral problems aged 10 years.METHODS: A total of 386 mother-singleton pairs were included from Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort Study (SMBCS), a longitudinal birth cohort in China. We quantified urinary BPA, TCS and BP-3 concentrations in maternal and 10-year-old children's urine samples using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and thyroid function parameters in cord serum samples. Caregivers completed the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) for their children at 10 years of age. Multivariable linear regression models and logistic regression models were applied to estimate associations of urinary phenol concentrations with thyroid hormones and risks of children's behavioral problems, respectively.RESULTS: The median values of urinary BPA, TCS and BP-3 concentrations for pregnant women were 1.75 μg/L, 0.54 μg/L and 0.37 μg/L, while 1.29 μg/L, 6.64 μg/L and 1.39 μg/L for children, respectively. Maternal urinary BPA concentrations were in associations with 1.00% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.20%, 1.92%] increases in cord serum FT4 concentrations and significantly associated with increased risks of total difficulties [odds ratio (OR): 1.45, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.97], while maternal urinary levels of BP-3 were significantly related to poorer prosocial behaviors (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.39) of children at 10 years of age. In sex-stratified analyses, maternal urinary BPA concentrations were related to increased total difficulty subscales only in boys.CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicated that higher prenatal urinary BPA concentrations were associated with increased risks of total difficulties, especially in boys and maternal urinary BP-3 concentrations were related to poorer prosocial behaviors at 10 years.

    • Select phenols are known to possess hormone-disrupting properties, but no previous study has addressed the potential effects of prenatal exposure to phenol mixtures on fetal reproductive hormones and children's second to fourth digit (2D: 4D) ratio, a marker for in utero testosterone (T) exposure. We aimed to explore interrelations of prenatal phenol exposures individually and in mixtures, cord serum reproductive hormones, and 2D: 4D ratio of children aged 10 years. Urinary 11 phenol concentrations were determined from 392 pregnant women participating in a longitudinal birth cohort. We estimated associations of prenatal phenol exposures individually and in mixtures with cord reproductive hormones and children's 2D:4D ratio using three statistical approaches, including generalized linear models (GLMs), elastic net regression (ENR) models and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models. In female newborns, the three models showed that maternal triclosan (TCS) concentrations were significantly negatively associated with cord serum T levels [regression coefficient (β) = -0.076, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.138, -0.013; p = 0.018]. Additionally, maternal urinary bisphenol A (BPA) levels were related to decreases in 2D:4D ratio of the left hand in girls by GLMs (β = -0.003, 95% CI: 0.007, -0.001; p = 0.024) and ENR models, but not BKMR models. We provided evidence that prenatal TCS exposure predicted lower cord serum T levels, and maternal BPA exposure was related to decreased 2D:4D ratio of the left hand in females.

    • With the rapid deployment of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), security has become a more critical problem than ever before, as such devices are interconnected and have access to a broad range of critical data. A well-known attack is Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) which can diverge the control flow of a program by exploiting the buffer overflow vulnerability. To protect a program from ROP attacks, a useful method is to instrument code into the protected program to do run-time control flow checking (known as Control Flow Integrity, CFI). However, instrumented code brings extra execution time, which has to be properly handled, as most CPS systems need to behave in a real-time manner. In this paper, we present a technique to efficiently compute an execution plan, which maximizes the number of executions of instrumented code to achieve maximal defense effect, and at the same time guarantees real-time schedulability of the protected task system with a new response time analysis. Simulation-based experimental results show that the proposed method can yield good quality execution plans, but performs orders of magnitude faster than exhaustive search. We also built a prototype in which a small auto-drive car is defended against ROP attacks by the proposed method implemented in FreeRTOS. The prototype demonstrates the effectiveness of our method in real-life scenarios.

    • Electronic doping of conjugated semiconductor plays a critical role in the fabrication of high efficiency organic optoelectronic devices. Here, we report an organic solar cell (OSC) by doping n-type DMBI-BDZC into one host binary bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photoactive layer comprised of a polymer donor PM6 and a nonfullerene acceptor Y6. The resulting champion device yields a significantly improved power conversion efficiency from 17.17% to 18.33% with an impressive fill factor of 80.20%. It is found that the electrically doped photoactive layer exhibits enhanced and balanced charge carrier mobilities, more effective exciton dissociation, longer carrier lifetime, and suppressed charge recombination with smaller energy loss. The dopant molecule DMBIBDZC also act as a surface morphology modifier of the photoactive layer with enhanced charge transport. This work demonstrates that manipulation of charge transport via adding a low concentration dopant into photoactive layer is a promising approach for further improvement of BHJ OSC performance.

    • BACKGROUND: Parabens, suspected as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, are nearly ubiquitous in the human body and exposure to these chemicals during pregnancy may disrupt thyroid hormones homeostasis and even affect fetal growth, although the impacts are still unclear.OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate associations of maternal urinary paraben concentrations with cord serum thyroid hormones and birth weight.METHODS: A subset of 437 mother-newborn pairs were included from a prospective birth cohort with five parabens quantified in maternal urine and seven thyroid function indicators measured in cord serum samples. Multivariable linear regression models and elastic net regression (ENR) models were applied to explore associations between individual and mixtures of prenatal urinary paraben concentrations and thyroid hormones and birth weight, respectively.RESULTS: Maternal urinary ethyl-paraben (EtP) concentrations were associated with increased cord serum total triiodothyronine levels (TT3) [percent change: 1.51%; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.20%, 2.74%; p=0.017]. Urinary propyl-paraben (PrP) levels predicted higher thyroid peroxidase antibodies (percent change: 4.19%, 95% CI: 0.20%, 8.44%; p=0.041). Maternal urinary EtP and butyl-paraben (BuP) concentrations were significantly positively associated with birth weight [regression coefficient, (β)=40.9g, 95% CI: 3.99, 76.6; p=0.030; β=62.1g, 95% CI: 8.70, 115; p=0.023, for EtP and BuP, respectively]. In sex-stratified analyses, positive relationship between EtP levels and birth weight was observed in boys. Urinary EtP concentrations predicted higher TT3 levels in cord serum samples, assessing parabens as a chemical mixture with ENR models.CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal exposure to parabens may affect thyroid hormone indicators with increased serum TT3 levels and associate with higher birth weight, especially in boys. The underlying biological mechanisms and effects of prenatal paraben exposures on disruption of thyroid function homeostasis and potential impacts of childhood growth and development needed to be further investigated.

    • Pushing NAND flash memory to higher density, manufacturers are aggressively enlarging the flash page size. However, the sizes of I/O requests in a wide range of scenarios do not grow accordingly. Since a page is the unit of flash read/write operations, traditional flash translation layers (FTLs) maintain the page mapping regularity. Hence, small random write requests become common, leading to extensive partial logical page writes. This write inefficiency significantly degrades the performance and increases the write amplification of flash storage. In this paper, we first propose a configurable mapping layer, called minipage, whose size is set to match I/O request sizes. The minipage-level mapping provides better flexibility in handling small writes at the cost of sequential read performance degradation and a larger mapping table. Then, we propose a new FTL, called PM-FTL, that exploits the minipage-level mapping to improve write efficiency and utilizes the page-level mapping to reduce the costs caused by the minipage-level mapping. Finally, trace-driven simulation results show that compared to traditional FTLs, PM-FTL reduces the write amplification and flash storage response time by an average of 33.4% and 19.1%, up to 57.7% and 34%, respectively, under 16KB flash pages and 4KB minipages.

    • Rational design and synthesis of noble metal nanomaterials with desired crystal phases (atomic level) and controllable structures/morphologies (mesoscopic level) are paramount for modulating their physiochemical properties. However, it is challenging to simultaneously explore atomic crystal-phase structures and ordered mesoscopic morphologies. Here, we report a simple synergistic templating strategy for the preparation of palladium-boron (Pd-B) nanoparticles with precisely controllable crystal-phases and highly ordered mesostructures. The engineering of crystal-phase structures at atomic levels is achieved by interstitially inserting metallic B atoms into face-centered cubic mesoporous Pd (fcc-mesoPd) confined in a mesoporous silica template. With the gradual insertion of B atoms, fcc-mesoPd is transformed into fcc-mesoPd(5)B, hcp-mesoPd(2)B with randomly distributed B atoms (hcp-mesoPd(2)B-r), and hcp-mesoPd(2)B with an atomically ordered B sequence (hcp-mesoPd(2)B-o) while preserving well-defined mesostructures. This synergistic templating strategy can be extended to engineer crystal-phase structures with various mesostructures/morphologies, including nanoparticles, nanobundles, and nanorods. Moreover, we investigate the crystal-phase-dependent catalytic performance toward the reduction reaction of p-nitrophenol and find that hcp-mesoPd(2)B-o displays much better catalytic activity. This work thus paves a new way for the synthesis of hcp-Pd2B nanomaterials with mesoscopically ordered structure/morphology and offers new insights of fcc-to-hcp evolution mechanisms which could be applied on other noble metal-based nanomaterials for various targeted applications.

    • Background: Growing evidence suggests an association between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and diabetes mellitus (DM). At the cellular level, long-term elevated levels of glucose have been shown to lead to nigrostriatal degeneration in PD models. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Previously, we have elucidated the potential of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in facilitating PD progression, involving aggregation of both alpha-synuclein (α-syn) and islet amyloid polypeptide in the pancreatic and brain tissues. However, due to the complicated effect of insulin resistance on PD onset, the actual mechanism of hyperglycemia-induced dopaminergic degeneration remains unknown. Methods: We employed the type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) model induced by streptozotocin (STZ) injection in a transgenic mouse line (BAC-α-syn-GFP) overexpressing human α-syn, to investigate the direct effect of elevated blood glucose on nigrostriatal degeneration. Results: STZ treatment induced more severe pathological alterations in the pancreatic islets and T1DM symptoms in α-syn-overexpressing mice than in wild-type mice, at one month and three months after STZ injections. Behavioral tests evaluating motor performance confirmed the nigrostriatal degeneration. Furthermore, there was a marked decrease in dopaminergic profiles and an increase of α-syn accumulation and Serine 129 (S129) phosphorylation in STZ-treated α-syn mice compared with the vehicle-treated mice. In addition, more severe neuroinflammation was observed in the brains of the STZ-treated α-syn mice. Conclusion: Our results solidify the potential link between DM and PD, providing insights into how hyperglycemia induces nigrostriatal degeneration and contributes to pathogenic mechanisms in PD.

    • In automotive industry, the production line for assembling mechanical parts of vehicles must place and weld hundreds of components on the right positions of the platform. The accuracy of deploying the components has great impact on the quality and performance of the produced vehicle. To ensure the assembly accuracy, a critical task in the production process is the so-called dimension quality control. The current state of practice in automotive industries is mainly based on a manual process where experienced engineers use production data to identify accuracy problems and suggest solutions for corrections on fixture adjustment in the assembly line. It is an extremely inefficient process, which typically takes the engineers around ten days for one batch of vehicles and a year to achieve the required assembly accuracy for final production. In this article, we present an automatic technique for dimension control. We formulate the dimension control problem as a constraint programming problem and present a refinement method to prune the exploration space. Our technique can not only identify the wrongly deployed parts leading to dimensional defects, but also provide high-quality fixture adjustment decisions. Experiments conducted on industrial production data from BMW Brilliance Automotive demonstrate the significantly improved efficiency and effectiveness of dimension control in automotive industries with our approach.

    • Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

    • Multi-twisted molecules, especially those with more than four branched rotation axes, have served as superior prototypes in diverse fields like molecular machines, optical materials, sensors, and so forth. However, due to excessive non-radiative relaxation of these molecules, it remains challenging to address their persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (pRTP), which limits their further development. Herein, we develop a host-guest energy-transfer relay strategy to improve the phosphorescence lifetime of multi-twisted luminophores by over thousand-fold to realize pRTP, which can be witnessed by the naked eye after removing the excitation light source. Moreover, we employ photoexcitation-induced molecular rearrangement to further prolong the phosphorescence lifetime, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first example of photoactivation in ordered host-guest systems. Our systems show superior humidity and oxygen resistance, enabling long-term (at least over 9-12 months) stability of the pRTP properties. By achieving pRTP of multi-twisted luminophores, this work can advance the understanding of molecular photophysical mechanisms and guide the study of more molecular systems that are difficult to achieve pRTP.

    • Hypercrosslinked pyrrole was synthesized via the Friedel–Crafts reaction and then carbonized to obtain urchin-like nitrogen-doped carbon (UNC). Ultrasmall iron oxide nanoparticles were then supported on UNC, and the composite was used to prepare an electrochemical sensor for detecting uric acid (UA) in human urine. FexOy/UNC was characterized and analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with FexOy/UNC was used as an electrochemical sensor to effectively identify UA. The electrochemical behavior of the FexOy/UNC-based UA sensor was studied using differential pulse stripping voltammetry, and the optimal conditions were determined by changing the amount of FexOy/UNC, pH of the buffer solution, deposition potential, and deposition time. Under optimal conditions, the FexOy/UNC-based electrochemical sensor detected UA in the range of 2–200 μM, where the limit of detection (LOD) for UA was 0.29 μM. Anti-interference experiments were performed, and the sensor was applied to the actual analysis of human urine samples. Urea, glucose, ascorbic acid, and many cations and anions present at 100-fold concentrations relative to UA did not strongly interfere with the response of the sensor to UA. The FexOy/UNC electrochemical sensor has high sensitivity and selectivity for uric acid in human urine samples and can be used for actual clinical testing of UA in urine.

    • Organic solar cells have attracted academic and industrial interests due to the advantages like lightweight, flexibility and roll-to-roll fabrication. Nowadays, 18% power conversion efficiency has been achieved in the state-of-the-art organic solar cells. The recent rapid progress in organic solar cells relies on the continuously emerging new materials and device fabrication technologies, and the deep understanding on film morphology, molecular packing and device physics. Donor and acceptor materials are the key materials for organic solar cells since they determine the device performance. The past 25 years have witnessed an odyssey in developing high-performance donors and acceptors. In this review, we focus on those star materials and milestone work, and introduce the molecular structure evolution of key materials. These key materials include homopolymer donors, D-A copolymer donors, A-D-A small molecular donors, fullerene acceptors and nonfullerene acceptors. At last, we outlook the challenges and very important directions in key materials development.

    • Catalysts for photochemical reactions underlie many foundations in our lives, from natural light harvesting to modern energy storage and conversion, including processes such as water photolysis by TiO2. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted large interest within the chemical research community, as their structural variety and tunability yield advantages in designing photocatalysts to address energy and environmental challenges. Here, we report a series of novel multivariate metal–organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs), denoted as MTV-MIL-100. They are constructed by linking aromatic carboxylates and AB2OX3 bimetallic clusters, which have ordered atomic arrangements. Synthesized through a solvent-assisted approach, these ordered and multivariate metal clusters offer an opportunity to enhance and fine-tune the electronic structures of the crystalline materials. Moreover, mass transport is improved by taking advantage of the high porosity of the MOF structure. Combining these key advantages, MTV-MIL-100(Ti,Co) exhibits a high photoactivity with a turnover frequency of 113.7 molH2 gcat.–1 min–1, a quantum efficiency of 4.25%, and a space time yield of 4.96 × 10–5 in the photocatalytic hydrolysis of ammonia borane. Bridging the fields of perovskites and MOFs, this work provides a novel platform for the design of highly active photocatalysts.

    • The impact of pore structure on the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in nitrogen-doped carbon materials is currently under debate, and previous studies are mainly limited to the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) rather than the practical flow cell (FC) system. In this study, assisted by a group of reliable pore models, the impact of two pore structure parameters, that is, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (SBET) and micropore surface fraction (fmicro), on ORR activity and selectivity are investigated in both RRDE and FC. The ORR mass activity correlates positively to the SBET in the RRDE and FC because a higher SBET can host more active sites. The H2O2 selectivity is independent of fmicro in the RRDE but correlates negatively to fmicro in the FC. The inconsistency results from different states of the electrode in the RRDE and the FC. These insights will guide the design of carbon materials for H2O2 synthesis.

    • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, necessitating the identification of novel therapeutic targets. Lysosome Associated Protein Transmembrane 4B (LAPTM4B) is involved in biological processes critical to cancer progression, such as regulation of solute carrier transporter proteins and metabolic pathways, including mTORC1. However, the metabolic processes governed by LAPTM4B and its role in oncogenesis remain unknown. In this study, we conducted unbiased metabolomic screens to uncover the metabolic landscape regulated by LAPTM4B. We observed common metabolic changes in several knockout cell models suggesting of a role for LAPTM4B in suppressing ferroptosis. Through a series of cell-based assays and animal experiments, we demonstrate that LAPTM4B protects tumor cells from erastin-induced ferroptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, LAPTM4B suppresses ferroptosis by inhibiting NEDD4L/ZRANB1 mediated ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of the cystine-glutamate antiporter SLC7A11. Furthermore, metabolomic profiling of cancer cells revealed that LAPTM4B knockout leads to a significant enrichment of ferroptosis and associated metabolic alterations. By integrating results from cellular assays, patient tissue samples, an animal model, and cancer databases, this study highlights the clinical relevance of the LAPTM4B-SLC7A11-ferroptosis signaling axis in NSCLC progression and identifies it as a potential target for the development of cancer therapeutics.
