- We present an experiment designed for extracting construction candidates for a Swedish constructicon from text corpora. We have explored the use of hybrid n-grams with the practical goal to discover previously undescribed partially schematic constructions. The experiment was successful, in that quite a few new constructions were discovered. The precision is low, but as a push-button tool for construction discovery, it has proven a valuable tool for the work on a Swedish constructicon.

- This article addresses the possibility of linking constructicon resources for different languages, in particular English and Swedish. The entries in Berkeley's English constructicon have been compared to Swedish, with focus on potential correspondences in a Swedish constructicon. In most cases, approximately corresponding Swedish constructions could be established, although typically with minor differences, often concerning grammatical markers. The closest equivalents are, typically, relatively general grammatical constructions, whereas constructions containing specific lexical elements tend to differ more. In order to link all corresponding constructions between the two resources, a combination of strategies seems to be required. Constructions with a referential meaning may be linked via FrameNet frames, while those with a more abstract grammatical function may be related in terms of their grammatical properties.

- This paper presents the integrated Swedish resource network of Språkbanken in general, and its latest addition – a constructicon – in particular. The constructicon, which is still in its early stages, is a collection of (partially) schematic multi-word units, constructions, developed as an addition to the Swedish FrameNet (SweFN). SweFN and the constructicon are integrated with other parts of Språkbanken, both lexical resources and corpora, through the lexical resource SALDO. In most respects, the constructicon is modeled on its English counterpart in Berkeley, and, thus, following the FrameNet format. The most striking differencies are the inclusion of so-called collostructional elements and the treatment of semantic roles, which are defined globally instead of locally as in FrameNet. Incorporating subprojects such as developing methods for automatic identification of constructions in authentic text on the one hand, and accounting for constructions problematic for L2 acquisition on the other, the approach is highly cross-disciplinary in nature, combining various theoretical linguistic perspectives on construction grammar with language technology, lexicography, and L2 research.

- This paper introduces the Swedish Constructicon (SweCxn), a database of Swedish constructions currently under development. We also present a small study of the treatment of constructions in Swedish (paper) dictionaries, thus illustrating the need for a constructionist approach, and discuss three different methods used to identify potential constructions for inclusion in the constructicon. SweCxn is a freely available electronic resource, with a particular focus on semi-general linguistic patterns of the type that are difficult to account for from a purely lexicographic or a purely grammatical perspective, and which therefore have tended to be neglected in both dictionaries and grammars. Far from being a small set of borderline cases, such constructions are both numerous and common. They are also quite problematic for second language acquisition as well as LT applications. Accordingly, various kinds of multi-word units have received more attention in recent years, not least from a lexicographic perspective. The coverage, however, is only partial, and the productivity of many constructions is hard to capture from a lexical viewpoint. To identify constructions for SweCxn, we use a combination of methods, such as working from existing construction descriptions for Swedish and other languages, applying LT tools to discover recurring patterns in texts, and extrapolating constructional information from dictionaries.

- Constructicography can be defined as a blend between Construction Grammar and Practical Lexicography, which aims at developing constructicons: repositories of form and function pairings in a language. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of this emerging field by (i) tracking the origins of both Frame Semantics and Construction Grammar and the repercussions of their intertwined developments to Computational Lexicography and Constructicography; (ii) comparing the impacts of the different degrees of interconnection between constructicons and framenets and (iii) discussing the possible applications of these resources. Also, we argue that Constructicography, while obviously building on the accumulated knowledge compiled by numerous Construction Grammar approaches to language, also contributes to its mother theory, since the effort to build coherent formalized computational resources forces constructionist analysis to go beyond describing families of constructions into the enterprise of describing a coherent construction grammar of a language.

- The Swedish FrameNet++ (SweFN++) project aims at developing an integrated Swedish lexical macro-resource to be used primarily in language technology R&D to build natural language processing (NLP) applications. Most of the component resources making up SweFN++ are existing digital lexical resources; in their case the central project effort is directed at making them interoperable on as many levels as possible. An important new resource being created in the project is a Swedish framenet. Now a sister project is starting with the aim of adding a Swedish constructicon (SweCxn) to the macro-resource. In this paper, we discuss some theoretical and conceptual issues which have arisen in the course of our work on the SweFN++ and the planning of the SweCxn, in the close encounter between the practical requirements of NLP and the theory and practice of linguistic – lexical and grammatical – description.

- In constructionist theory, a constructicon is an inventory of constructions making up the full set of linguistic units in a language. In applied practice, it is a set of construction descriptions – a “dictionary of constructions”. The development of constructicons in the latter sense typically means combining principles of both construction grammar and lexicography, and is probably best characterized as a blend between the two traditions. We call this blend constructicography. The present volume is a comprehensive introduction to the emerging field of constructicography. After a general introduction follow six chapters presenting constructicon projects for English, German, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, and Swedish, respectively, often in relation to a framenet of the language. In addition, there is a chapter addressing the interplay between linguistics and language technology in constructicon development, and a final chapter exploring the prospects for interlingual constructicography. This is the first major publication devoted to constructicon development and it should be particularly relevant for those interested in construction grammar, frame semantics, lexicography, the relation between grammar and lexicon, or linguistically informed language technology.

- In this introductory chapter, we first present a brief introduction to Nordic languages, highlighting some characteristic structural features.1 This part is not restricted to phenomena addressed from a constructional perspective; in fact, it reveals several striking gaps in the construction grammar (CxG) coverage of these languages. In the second part of the chapter, we provide an overview of previous work in Nordic CxG, focusing on a few major areas. Perhaps needless to say, neither of these two overviews will be anywhere near exhaustive, but hopefully they will provide enough of a taste to inspire curiosity for more. In the third and final part of the chapter, we briefly introduce the eight studies presented in this volume.

- Finding authentic examples of grammatical constructions is central in constructionist approaches to linguistics, language processing, and second language learning. In this paper, we address this problem as an information retrieval (IR) task. To facilitate research in this area, we built a benchmark collection by annotating the occurrences of six constructions in a Swedish corpus. Furthermore, we implemented a simple and flexible retrieval system for finding construction occurrences, in which the user specifies a ranking function using lexical-semantic similarities (lexicon-based or distributional). The system was evaluated using standard IR metrics on the new benchmark, and we saw that lexical-semantical rerankers improve significantly over a purely surface-oriented system, but must be carefully tailored for each individual construction.

- We present an experiment where natural language processing tools are used to automatically identify potential constructions in a corpus. e experiment was conducted as part of the ongoing efforts to develop a Swedish constructicon. Using an automatic method to suggest constructions has advantages not only for efficiency but also methodologically: it forces the analyst to look more objec-tively at the constructions actually occurring in corpora, as opposed to focusing on “interesting” constructions only. As a heuristic for identifying potential con-structions, the method has proved successful, yielding about 200 (out of 1,200) highly relevant construction candidates.

- In this paper we relate bilingual lexicography and contrastive construction grammar via bilingual constructicography, addressing the treatment of constructional and phraseological information in bilingual lexicography. After a discussion of the different notions of equivalence in lexicography and constructicography, we compare two online resources: the Swedish constructicon and the Icelandic-Swedish part of Islex.se. It is shown that although Islex.se contains a wealth of constructional information, this does not readily carry over across languages. A creative user can find correlections between constructions in Icelandic and Swedish, but these connections are indirect and somewhat ad hoc. Explicit links between the two languages mainly concern lemmas. In an online resource, it is clearly possible to also include systematic comparisons of phraseological information, and we argue that making use of constructionist resources such as constructicons would be helpful in this regard.

- In 2012, efforts to launch hen as a gender-neutral pronoun in Swedish sparked a widespread and sometimes fierce debate. This article addresses the establishment of hen in actual usage, in particular in blogs, newspapers, and students’ essays. In general, the use of hen is fairly uncommon, and the majority of occurrences are meta uses; which means the word is discussed more than it is used. In certain areas, however, such as gender oriented blogs and academic essays on Swedish, hen is somewhat more common. A comparison with alternative gender-neutral expressions is presented, based on different functions of hen, both generic and referentially specific types. Two functions unique to hen are distinguished, cross-gender specific reference and gender-neutral reference to subjects in scientific studies; with respect to other functions, hen is a stylistically marked alternative.

- This chapter addresses the need for better coverage of semi-general linguistic patterns in (second) language pedagogy, which is currently biased towards general rules on the one hand and concrete expressions on the other. Arguably, this reflects the descriptive resources available: grammars and dictionaries.Hence, we propose that L2 education should benefit from a constructionist approach, which is less restricted to distinct linguistic levels and therefore better suited to handle, in particular, patterns combining lexical and grammatical properties. We review some of the leading Swedish L2 textbooks and study aid materials, and illustrate how they tend to neglect semi-general patterns and fail to capture the productivity and variability of constructions. For future L2 education to achieve better coverage in this regard, access to constructionist descriptive resources should be helpful. As an example of such a resource, we present the Swedish constructicon (SweCcn), an electronic database of Swedish construction descriptions, and discuss its usefulness for developing construction-based teaching materials, as a complement to the grammar and dictionary approach.

- This paper presents MoCCA, a Model of Comparative Concepts for Aligning Constructicons under development by a consortium of research groups building Constructicons of different languages including Brazilian Portuguese, English, German and Swedish. The Constructicons will be aligned by using comparative concepts (CCs) providing language-neutral definitions of linguistic properties. The CCs are drawn from typological research on grammatical categories and constructions, and from FrameNet frames, organized in a conceptual network. Language-specific constructions are linked to the CCs in accordance with general principles. MoCCA is organized into files of two types: a largely static CC Database file and multiple Linking files containing relations between constructions in a Constructicon and the CCs. Tools are planned to facilitate visualization of the CC network and linking of constructions to the CCs. All files and guidelines will be versioned, and a mechanism is set up to report cases where a language-specific construction cannot be easily linked to existing CCs.

The perspective is contrastive rather than typological, with an aim towards multilingual constructicon development. - There are now so-called constructiCons in development for several different languages. Hence, there are also possibilities for multilingual application of these linguistic resources. Due to the complexity of comparing grammatical constructions in different languages, an approach of trying to establish direct construction equivalents in different languages is not practically feasible on a large scale. Instead, constructions may be connected in terms of shared properties, preferably defined in a language-neutral way. To this end, we propose a linking system based on comparative concepts (CCs) of the sort employed in language typology, enriched with semantic frames. Through this set of CCs, (partial) correspondences may be established between constructions in terms of (combinations of) semantic, functional and morphosyntactic similarities.

Particular attention is given to the description format and the treatment of constructional variation. A main theme in the chapter is the interdependence and alignment of SweCcn and related resources, on the one hand in the local context, notably the infrastructure of Språkbanken (the Swedish language bank), and on the other hand with respect to corresponding resources for other languages. Of key concern is the relation to FrameNet, both the Swedish and other framenets, and a major section is devoted to conditions for linking constructions and frames.

- A constructicon is on the one hand a theoretical conception of language as a structured inventory of constructions, and on the other hand a collection of construction descriptions, essentially a practical instantiation of the former concept. In this introductory chapter, we review the role of these notions in constructionist theory and practice, and relate it to the closely connected development of Frame Semantics into FrameNet. Practical constructicon development is characterized as a combination of construction grammar and lexicography, for which we introduce the term constructicography. Central issues in constructicography are introduced, setting the stage for the explorations in the following chapters.

- Introducing this thematic issue on Swedish constructions, we first relate how construction grammar was introduced and established in Swedish linguistics. Then follows a brief introduction to construction grammar as such. By way of Swedish examples, we illustrate some of the central ideas in construction grammar, such as multigrain generalizations and intermingling of linguistic levels. Finally, we present the contributions to the volume: Jan Anward deals with recycling in conversation; Sheila Dooley accounts for the comparative correlative ju … desto construction; Björn Hammarberg treats comparative constructions from the viewpoint of acquisition; Jan Lindström and Anne-Marie Londen provide an interactional account of concessive constructions; Nina Martola addresses the relation between lexicon and grammar in the realization of passives; and Joel Olofsson discusses productivity in motion constructions.

- This thesis provides an account of control phenomena in Swedish, focusing on the interpretation of PRO in infinitival clauses. The investigation consists of a corpus-based study of approximately 20,000 Swedish infinitives and an Optimality-theoretic analysis of the same data. The corpus study shows that control depends on a combination of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors. Generally, the interpretation of PRO depends on the syntactic function/position of the infinitive, but the syntactic patterns are overridden if they do not fit with the semantics of the clause. Pragmatic factors are relevant, but crucially so only when syntax and semantics do not suffice to determine the interpretation. In the Optimality-theoretic analysis, the various empirical results are derived through a single system of interacting violable constraints. The model consists of a hierarchy of constraints, where the optimal (i.e. grammatical) interpretation of any given input is the reading that best satisfies the highest ranking constraints. As indicated by the corpus study, (lexical) semantic constraints are higher ranked than the syntactic constraints, which in turn outrank the pragmatics.

- Structures that are neither quite active nor passive, or neither quite transitive nor intransitive, are often marked morphologically. In Swedish, the typical markers are reflexives and so-called deponents. The latter are formed by an s-suffix on the verb, which is also used in passives and derives historically from the reflexive sig. This article explores the inventory of reflexive and deponent constructions in Swedish. Based on an investigation of some 400 reflexive verbs and 200 deponent verbs in a major Swedish dictionary, a Construction Grammar account of reflexives and deponents is presented. Around 30 reflexive and deponent constructions are identified and characterized, according to formal, syntactic, and semantic properties. Together, these constructions cover a wide array of more or less transitive and more or less active functions, where the reflexive or deponent element typically associate a Patient role with the subject and/or serve to relativize transitivity. The constructions are typically semiproductive, neither fully general nor restricted to specific verbs, and the distinguishing characteristics cannot be ascribed to a single linguistic level but consist of a combination of phrasal, lexical, and morphematic features. As for the reflexive and deponent elements as such, these are analyzed as three different morphematic constructions, one reflexive pronoun and two s-suffixes (of which one is identical to the suffix employed in s-passives).

- In this paper we discuss a couple of examples of morphosyntactic integration of non-verbal material in written Swedish, specifically icons and music beats. It is argued that classification in terms of parts-of-speech is not a particularly fruitful approach in these cases. Instead, we suggest a constructional perspective and briefly illustrate how these phenomena may be analyzed in terms of constructions.

- Control, the interpretation of the implicit subject of a non-finite clause, seems to depend on interaction between syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic principles. This suggests that an OT framework, which is based on the idea of constraint interaction, should be particularly suited to handle the problem. The present paper integrates configurational, lexical, and pragmatic factors in an OT analysis of control in Swedish. This approach enables the analysis to cover a broader range of control phenomena than can be accounted for from a more uniformly syntactic or semantic perspective. Since the study of control concerns syntax and semantics both, it may provide interesting insights concerning the relation between the two perspectives. Unlike most contemporary theories of grammar, the OT architecture easily lends itself to treating production and interpretation separately. This makes control, as a matter of interpretation, a separate issue from the distribution of controllable elements. By distinguishing these processes - and thereby their inputs - with respect to control, some interesting consequences for OT syntax and OT semantics in general may be revealed. In this paper, it is shown that a fully inflected input to OT syntax is not very well suited to treat the distribution of non-finite clauses (and, consequently, control phenomena). It is also proposed that syntactic structure should not be regarded as part of the input to OT semantics.
