  • Extending Rigor and Relevance: Towards Credible, Contributory and Communicable Research
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There are many ways to discuss research quality. This paper aims at presenting an actionable framework for research quality, which can be used as guiding principles for identifying important dimensions when evaluating research. The framework takes its starting point in prior suggestions that research should be rigorous, relevant and consumable. When examining the rigor aspect it is argued that this is a means rather than an end. By being rigorous, research strives to be credible. This also calls for consistency and transparency. Similarly, it is argued that relevance is a means for research to be contributory. To be contributory research also has to be original and generalizable. Research has to be consumable in order to be communicable, but to become a consumed piece of research it must also be accessible. Starting out with the agenda of discussing research being rigorous, relevant and consumable, the paper instead ends up with a call for research being credible, contributory and communicable. By using the dimensions presented in the paper, researchers may increase the quality of research efforts both in research design, as well as research execution and research presentation.

  • Generic modelling of cell control systems and production resources
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th Conference on Flexible Automation andIntelligent Manufacturing, FAIM ´97, 1997. ; , s. 123-134
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Frequent changes regarding products, processes, and technologies require the manufacturing systems and the control systems to be inexpensive, flexible, and easy to re-configure. The major aim of the research presented in this paper is to define a generic reference architecture that supports design and implementation of highly flexible control-systems for manufacturing cells. Based on the analyses of two machining cells, a preliminary version of such an architecture has been developed. The main features of this are: (I) modular control structure with one module for each resource in the cell, (2) message-based, generic communication between the system's modules, (3) separation of generic and specific control activities, and (4) separation of the products' operation lists from the description of the resources' capabilities. Among manufacturing cells in the industry, there is a great variety considering system layout, product flow, and the resources' capacity, flexibility, and operation. Therefore, in order to gain a more generic architecture for manufacturing systems, different types of production resources available, processes, manufacturing system layouts, and product flows have been analysed and classified based on information gathered in an industrial survey. Based on this analysis, the applicability of the architecture is discussed. It is concluded that the architecture is directly applicable to most cells, and if some modifications are made in the architecture in order to handle specific features observed, the architecture could be made applicable to all cell types defined except one.

  • A Longitudinal Investigation Of Business Angel Relationship Risk Mitigation Strategies Within Investments - A Three-dimensional Approach
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business angel (BA) investing is associated with various types of risks, where relationship risk often is highlighted as being especially critical (Fiet, 1995). Three investor strategies for mitigating relationship risks associated with BA investing in young private firms can be traced in the literature: (i) indirect control through monitoring and rewarding/punishing entrepreneur behavior and output, (ii) direct control through active involvement, and (iii) relying on mutual trust (Van Osnabrugge and Robinson, 2000; Maxwell and Lévesque, 2011). While early research in the field adopted a rather static view on BA categorization (Coveney and Moore, 1998; Sørheim and Landström, 2001), more contemporary research shows that BAs change investment roles across investments (Avdeitchikova, 2008; Lahti, 2011). However, whether BAs behave differently regarding risk mitigation within investments is less explored. This explorative study contributes to the opening of the black box of how BAs may shift risk mitigation strategies over time within single investments.

  • Functional coupling in manufacturing systems and its implications
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part B, journal of engineering manufacture. - : SAGE Publications. - 0954-4054 .- 2041-2975. ; 216:4, s. 623-626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The axiomatic design theory as stated by Suh has proven useful when designing products, and this success has led to an increasing interest in applying the theory to manufacturing systems development. The theory states that functional couplings should be avoided in general. However, manufacturing systems are potentially coupled in many ways, the most obvious being that manufacturing operations usually are performed in a sequence. Functional coupling is defined as a dependence between functional requirements. The subject of couplings in manufacturing systems is not extensively explored or described in the literature, and specifically not in relation to the axiomatic design theory. Five different categories of couplings in manufacturing systems are described and exemplified in this paper. Couplings can be designed into the manufacturing system for a diverse range of reasons, e.g. selection of manufacturing processes or materials, but they may also be irrational, e.g. decisions based on political opinions.

  • Information management for the factory planning process
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on the present needs for the factory planning support, of which the most important ones are: • A structured reuse of knowledge and support for industries. Because today the industry handbook in factory planning is not satisfying enough to support this complex process. • Better methods to represent and communicate data between software within the factory layout area for easier data communication and thereby information access, exchange and reuse. To support the factory planning, based on the mentioned needs, a mapping of the present factory planning process is made based on knowledge from industry and academy. Since the factory planning process is a huge and complex process that no one can handle by themself, a puzzle work is performed. Based on gathered information and knowledge an activity model is developed, to structure the data and information. The model gives a better overview on the actual course of events and in this way also “captures” the most important information to be represented for data exchange among different software applications and different people. In this thesis the most important information in factory layout is gathered and structured in a concept model for factory layout. Since the concepts depend on the context in which they are used, it is extremely important to present every concept in its relationship with other related concepts within the area.  A general theory and state-of-the-art definitions in the area is presented and discussed for a factory planning information management system. An evaluation and discussion is made for the state-of-the-art software in the area of concern.

  • Puzzle or Mosaic? : On Managerial Information Patterns
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Managers and information are key components in most management control literature, and a range of tools and concepts have been developed to better accommodate the information needs of managers so as to ensure efficient action and intelligent decisions. At the same time, the managerial work is often described as highly fragmented, unstructured and interpersonal, with little time for planning and isolated reflection. It is therefore relevant to explore how and to what extent new technologies come into play in managerial information patterns. Furthermore, new management concepts and tools could potentially give rise to new control practices, resulting from e.g. novel relations between managers and other actors, new influential roles, and alternative forms of information flows. These issues are addressed in three papers. The first paper examines the portfolio of information that managers use in their daily work, thereby putting formal information systems into the context of less formal sources. The study is based on interviews with a variety of managers in different organisations. The second paper discusses the interplay between formally designed information-based practices, and the individual perceptions and habits that emerge in relation to the formalised. People at different levels in two public-sector organisations form the basis of the second paper. The third paper explores how various control practices operate together in a government agency, thereby providing new perspectives on how management control is exercised in a knowledge-intensive organisation. It is suggested that managerial information patterns evolve slowly compared to the technological development. Obtaining an overview of one’s area of responsibility is mainly achieved through dialogue and interaction with others. However, new technologies have influenced the more routine exchange of information, thereby causing increased dispersion among users and creating new roles. Subordinates constitute a vital influence on the managerial role and on how managers reason concerning their use of information. This people-oriented type of management results in the use of a multitude of pieces of information that is sometimes very subtle and retrieved in spontaneous interaction. The multidimensional and emerging nature of information provides insight into both the strengths and the limitations of formalising managerial information patterns. Furthermore, various information patterns are interrelated, e.g., they complement each other, substitute each other, or serve different purposes at different times. In total, managerial information patterns resemble a mosaic rather than a puzzle that can be solved by specific pieces. Management information should therefore be viewed from a broader perspective in order to better understand managers’ information needs, how control practices emerge and how information systems come into play.

  • A new spectrophotometric method for improved indirect measurement of low levels of vitellogenin using malachite green
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1029-0397 .- 0306-7319. ; 92:7, s. 894-908
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vitellogenin (VTG) is a well-known biomarker for endocrine disruption and the measurement of alkali-labile protein bound phosphate (ALP) has been used as an indirect quantification method for VTG in fish, clam and mussel. One limitation of the ALP method has been the insufficient detection limit but with the method presented here this obstacle has been overcome, enabling measurement in fish species with very low background levels and hence a wider usage of ALP measurements in the future. In a previous publication, relying on spectrophotometric measurement with molybdate, we presented an improved protocol for ALP measurement in fish plasma. The sample preparation in that paper has here been combined with an improved spectrophotometric determination using malachite green as colour reagent. The spectrophotometric measurement was optimised with respect to acidity and reagent concentration. The validated method has a detection limit of 0.3 mu g PO43- ml(-1) plasma, which is 10 times lower than previous spectrophotometric methods using molybdate reagent, and an intra-assay variation of 7%. The new method was used for screening of endocrine effects by placing juvenile rainbow trout at three locations along the Vallkarra brook, Lund Sweden, which receives leachate water from a nearby covered landfill. In comparison with reference fish, ALP was significantly higher (66%) at the 99% confidence level in fish placed close to the landfill. ALP was also significantly higher (33%) at the 95% confidence level in fish from the group placed further downstream. Fish placed in a brook branch not receiving leachate were unaffected. The low levels of ALP in reference fish (5.5 +/- 0.7 SD PO43- mu g/ml plasma) could not have been quantified with such precision with another method for ALP measurement. The indirect quantification of VTG as ALP is a more economic alternative compared to quantification with immunological methods.

  • Improved spectrophotometric vitellogenin determination via alkali-labile phosphate in fish plasma : a cost effective approach for assessment of endocrine
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry. - 0306-7319 .- 1029-0397. ; 89:14, s. 1023-1042
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vitellogenin (VTG) is a well known protein biomarker for exposure to environmental estrogens and possible endocrine disruption in fish. VTG is very dominant in plasma after the onset of vitellogenesis and the protein is heavily phosphorylated. This enables indirect quantification through measurement of alkali-labile protein bound phosphate (ALP) as an alternative to the more expensive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Good correlation has previously been shown between ALP and actual VTG levels but little effort has been made to investigate the method in an analytical way e.g., to assure the origin of the measured phosphate. During this method development care has been taken to rule out non-VTG sources of phosphate such as phospholipids and free phosphate in the blood plasma. Sample preparation has been simplified and unnecessary steps have been omitted. The common spectrophotometric measurement for ALP involves measurement at two wavelengths and calculation of corrected absorbance values. With a quick phase separation step the spectrophotometric phosphate determination using molybdic acid and ascorbic acid has been improved and all matrix interference has been eliminated. The final ALP method presented here has a detection limit of 3.2 µg PO43-/ml plasma which is six times lower than similar methods and it also has less variability. A high sample throughput in comparison to previous ALP methods is possible after scaling down sample and reagent volumes to fit in a 96 well microtiter plate. The cost for buying all chemicals and plastic consumer goods for setting up the indirect protocol for the analysis of 1000 samples is only circa 350 euro. This is only 1% of the material cost for buying commercially available test kit for direct quantification of VTG in the same number of samples. The ALP method should thus be of interest also for applied scientists outside advanced research laboratories.

  • An Ontological Approach to support Knowledge Sharing between Product Design and Assembly Process Planning (APP)
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Modern manufacturing organizations have to cope with several critical issues arising from the need for mass customization such as short product life-cycles, an increasing number of product variants and frequently changing customer requirements. One of the main factors that could aid overcoming those challenges is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) applications over a collaborative manufacturing environment, in which all stakeholders share and exchange knowledge across different manufacturing domains and applications. However, the use of ICT applications over a collaborative manufacturing environment is limited at the domain level by semantic conflicts arising from the use of different ways to describe the same objects and facts arising from different conceptualizations. Similarly, ICT usage is limited on the application level by interoperability problems arising from diverse heterogeneity between different ICT applications and tools. This research presents a semantic approach to support knowledge sharing within the assembly domain. More specifically, this research is focusing on capturing and sharing assembly design knowledge and integrating the assembly design domain and the Assembly Process Planning (APP) domain. Assembly design and APP are very important engineering domains for successful manufacturing system design, which requires an efficient collaborative environment for best utilization of the assembly resources. However, though these domains represent different perspectives in understanding of the same concepts, both domains use different software applications, which might cause interoperability issues. In this thesis, a novel integration approach has been proposed; this approach is composed of two stages: the first stage includes modelling and recognition of assembly knowledge semantics from SolidWorks (SW) CAD software by using SolidWorks’ Application Programmable Interface (SW-API). The second stage includes sharing the recognized assembly knowledge semantics by using a knowledge-based system in the form of a three-layer ontology architecture which provides a common semantic base to support knowledge sharing across assembly design and APP both on the domain and the application level. Each ontology layer shares a set of concepts from the most generic level to the most specialized level. The foundation ontology layer represents the general key concepts in the assembly design and APP domains. More specialized assembly design concepts and APP concepts are represented both in the domain ontology layer, and the application ontology layer. In the latter, concepts related to SolidWorks CAD software and to assembly robotic devices are represented.

    • Application of discrete event simulation has been widely accepted in the manufacturing industry forshop floor capacity and flow analysis. Often the models are made to analyse a limited aspects ofthe system behaviour that abstract only few factors for the sake of simplicity in the expense ofmodel accuracy. One of the prohibitive reasons for a detailed and multi objective model is thecollection and management of the input output simulation data.In this work an integrated and detailed simulation model of a machining line has been built for thepurpose of a multi objective analysis and optimization with application of thestandard simulation data schema for data management. The model incorporates detailed capacityand flow related factors as well as sustainability factors (energy usage in machine tools), Theabstraction level of the model is sufficiently low to capture the effect of operators’ movements inthe shop floor and setup procedures. To support modeling of such a detailed model enhancemodel reusability, the Core Manufacturing Simulation Data standard XML schema was used. Thisneutral format of data will also help to build model with less effort, reuse the information, andcommunicate with different application tools. A case study is carried out to illustrate the methodsand run a multi objective optimization. The results of the optimization work are reported in anotherpaper.

  • Digital support for rules and regulations when planning and designing factory layouts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier. - 2212-8271 .- 2212-8271. ; 120, s. 1445-1450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Factory layouts are frequently planned and designed in virtual environments, based on the experience of the layout planner. This planning and design process depends on information from several cross-disciplinary activities performed by several functions and experts, e.g., product development, manufacturing process planning, resource descriptions, ergonomics, and safety. Additionally, the layout planner also needs to consider applicable rules and regulations. This experience-based and manual approach to plan and design factory layouts, considering a multitude of inputs and parameters, is a cumbersome iterative process with a high risk of human error and faulty inputs and updates. The general trend in industry is to automate and assist users with their tasks and activities, deriving from concepts such as Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. This paper presents and demonstrates how digital support for rules and regulations can assist layout planners in factory layout work. The objective is to support the layout planner in accounting for area/volume reservations required to comply with rules and regulations for workers and equipment in the factory layout. This is a step in a wider initiative to provide enhanced digital support to layout planners, making the layout planning and design process more objective and efficient, and bridge gaps between cross-disciplinary planning and design activities.

  • Virtual-Simulation-Based Multi-Objective Optimization of an Assembly Station in a Battery Production Factory
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Systems. - : MDPI. - 2079-8954. ; 11:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The planning and design process of manufacturing factory layouts is commonly performed using digital tools, enabling engineers to define and test proposals in virtual environments before implementing them physically. However, this approach often relies on the experience of the engineers involved and input from various cross-disciplinary functions, leading to a time-consuming and subjective process with a high risk of human error. To address these challenges, new tools and methods are needed. The Industry 5.0 initiative aims to further automate and assist human tasks, reinforcing the human-centric perspective when making decisions that influence production environments and working conditions. This includes improving the layout planning process by making it more objective, efficient, and capable of considering multiple objectives simultaneously. This research presents a demonstrator solution for layout planning using digital support, incorporating a virtual multi-objective optimization approach to consider safety regulations, area boundaries, workers’ well-being, and walking distance. The demonstrator provides a cross-disciplinary and transparent approach to layout planning for an assembly station in the context of battery production. The demonstrator solution illustrates how layout planning can become a cross-disciplinary and transparent activity while being automated to a higher degree, providing results that support decision-making and balance cross-disciplinary requirements.

  • IT & Business Performance : A Dynamic Relationship
  • 2006. - 1st
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How and when does information technology (IT) contribute to the performance of the firm? Does IT provide competitive advantage? Why is IT so difficult to understand and manage? Does it have to be that way? This book explores the complex, dynamic relationship between IT and business performance. It contains studies of IT-related change in different contexts, and it also offers models, tools and approaches that further the understanding and management of IT and business performance. The book illustrates how value from IT is derived indirectly, through innovation of business processes and development of organizational capabilities. From this it follows that a deep understanding of the transformation of IT resources into business performance is crucial – because ultimately, it is the actions of people in a specific context that lead to realization of business performance improvements. The primary audience for this book is reflective practitioners working with IT & business Performance, such as chief information officers (CIOs), general managers and change agents. The book is also well suited for people studying these and related roles.

    • How and when does IT contribute to the performance of the firm? Does IT provide competitive advantage? Why is IT so difficult to understand and manage? Does it have to be that way? This chapter provides a condensed discussion of some key mechanisms in the dynamic relationship between IT, business performance and competitive advantage. It does so by employing a conceptual view that link IT resources, business processes and organizational capabilities. An underlying theme of the chapter is that managers need to have a rich understanding of how IT resources are transformed into business performance in order to adequately manage IT and integrate IT issues into strategic processes and governance activities. Knowing that IT contributes to business performance is simply not enough, because the complexity inherent in the task of transforming IT into business performance is not disappearing anytime soon. The discussion provided in this chapter is intended to contribute to a richer understanding of the transformation process.

  • Organisational Adoption of Innovations : Management Practices and IT
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes effects of use and reasons for using three different organisational innovations: ISO 9000, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and an administrative tool (the YAF-module) in the Swedish Sports Confederation’s system Swedish Sports Online. This is done through three separate studies. The first study is directed at Swedish Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SME) and the two following studies are directed at Swedish sport associations. The thesis contains three separate essays presenting the studies and an introductory part where the studies are compared. In the introductory part of the thesis the interaction patterns between organisation and innovation are compared and discussed. I discuss the level of effort put into the decision and implementation processes, and how this is related to the satisfaction with the innovations. The patterns that emerged are quite different in the three studies. Understanding these different interaction patterns between organisation and innovation is a step away from a beneficial/ detrimental dichotomy of innovations. The decision and implementation processes differ between the three studies regarding what parts of the organisations were involved. In the first study we saw top down decision and implementation processes, whereas in the second study we saw bottom or middle up processes. In the third study the decision and implementation was much narrower in scope, often involving only one person. I also describe how all perspectives (efficient choice, forced selection, fad and fashion perspective) suggested by Abrahamson (1991), bear some grain of truth for the adoption of ISO 9000 by SMEs and adoption of ICT by sport associations, whereas imitation (the fad and fashion perspectives) is less important in the adoption of the YAF-module. Furthermore, I discuss the parallels between human and organisational decisionmaking.Summary of the first essay – The aim of the first study is to investigate the effects of quality management in accordance with the ISO 9000 as viewed by both quality managers and other managers. We also consider the way companies carried out the recertification process to ISO 9001:2000 and what consequences different approaches brought. The study is based on Swedish SMEs with an ISO 9000:1994 who had recertified according to the ISO 9001:2000 standard. The strongest, most obvious and most valued effects of the ISO 9000 standard are clearer and more apparent working procedures and responsibilities. The most apparent problem is bureaucracy, which according to some managers can lead to reduced flexibility. The effects of the certification vary depending on how the certification project is conducted and how consultants are used.Summary of the second essay – This essay presents a descriptive study of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) and the change in communication patterns in Swedish sport associations over the period 1994 to 2003. The change is discussed in light of Internet and broadband diffusion. Results show that new channels for communication have been adopted, primarily Web sites and e-mail, but few established channels have been dropped. While there are associations that save time and money and increase the spirit of community using ICT, many organisations experience the increased number of communication channels as a burden since maintaining them takes extra resources but the benefits are not always easy to detect or measure. Certain characteristics common among non profit organisations (NPOs) as well as Internet and broadband access have influenced the development of ICT use.Summary of the third essay – This essay presents a new model for analysing adoption of discretionary, public information systems (PIS) with digital use patterns (such as use or non-use, as opposed to frequency of use, or degree of engaged or compliant use). The model is based on Rogers’ innovation diffusion theory (IDT) and Nilsson’s user centred access model (UCAM). The model is an alternative to the general technology acceptance model (TAM). The AKAM-Model identifies six prerequisites for use and four management approaches and describes how these are related. To illustrate its applicability, the AKAM-Model is used to analyse the adoption of a specific module, the YAF-module, in the Swedish Sports Confederation’s (SSC) system Swedish Sports Online. We present empirical results that indicate the frequency and importance of the barriers and driving forces as experienced by the YAF-module users and the potential YAF-module users.

  • 2-loop Action Research
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper outlines a general 2-loop model of action research in order to account for two important facets of action research that traditional cycle models do not explicitly account for. One facet concerns the interplay between the processes of action research (ie diagnosing, action planning, acting, evaluating, and learning) on one hand, and their conceptual outcomes (ie the perceived real world situation, the theoretical understanding, and the observed organizational response) on the other. The second facet concerns the dynamic exchange of knowledge between the world theory and the world of practice. Both types of knowledge are necessary, but none of them are sufficient to shape the result of an action research project. We argue that the dialectic between these two worlds manifests itself in a certain point which we call “the moment of truth”, where the theoretical understanding is challenged by practical facts, and where practice is scrutinized by theoretical knowledge. We believe that by acknowledging these facets, it is possible to enhance the quality of action research.

  • Straight from the heart – a clinical group intervention to research management spirituality
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Management Research Review. - : Emerald. - 2040-8269. ; 40:8, s. 870-889
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the advancement of research methods in management spirituality by proposing a novel and innovative approach for generating empirical material on issues relevant for practitioners. Design/methodology/approach: The approach introduced is designed as a one-year group process based on Schein’s concept of clinical inquiry, primarily aimed at helping the participating managers to address challenging issues that they face in real life. When this helping process is successful, empirical material on these issues is revealed, as the participants share information to receive help themselves. Findings: Findings illustrate how the approach generates extensive, rich and broad data, guided by what becomes important for the participating managers as the process unfolds. A strong holding environment allows for urgent matters to be shared straight from the heart. Research limitations/implications: As this activity is based on the belief that the managers know best the issues relevant to them, a deviation from the assumed research direction should be seen as help to focus on relevant issues, rather than an obstacle of following an original plan. Practical implications: The proposed approach may be of particular interest to researchers who not only want to contribute to academic knowledge but also wish to work with people and facilitate transformation. Originality/value: This paper advances understandings of generating empirical material in the field of management spirituality through an innovative, client-centered research approach, rooted in well-established theories. © 2017, © Emerald Publishing Limited.

  • Straight From the Heart: Using Clinical Inquiry to Research Management Spirituality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - New York, U.S.A. : Academy of Management. - 2151-6561 .- 0065-0668.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the field of management, spirituality and religion has developed greatly during the last decades with an increasingly number of publications in special outlets as well as in highly ranked journals, the bulk of the research on workplace spirituality still relies heavily on the use of quantitative methods. The field is struggling to find methods, which allow an in-depth, first- person understanding of how spirituality relates to work. With this paper, I hope to contribute to the advancement of alternative research methods by proposing a novel and innovative approach to data generation. The suggested approach takes departure in action research and, especially, the notion of clinical inquiry, defined by Edgar Schein as “gathering useful data in settings that are defined by 'clients' who are seeking help”. If the helping process is perceived as successful, the clients will be motivated to reveal more relevant, in-depth data, also when it comes to sensitive issues, which are usually not within research of traditional research methods. In order to illustrate the approach, I draw on a longitudinal study in which the approach was used to help business leaders to integrate insights from spiritual development into their working life. This paper focuses on (1) how a clinical group setting was created, (2) the design of the intervention, (3) a particular technique called “project discussions” was employed to help clients, and (4) how the use of these techniques provided an opportunity for data generation. It is concluded clinical group setting fulfills the function of a holding environment, a safe space in the borderland between spirituality and business, which allowed them to find support in their developments. As a consequence, in-depth data about how these developments came about could be generated. I also argue that the proposed approach may be a viable way for researchers’ with the dual vocation of both facilitating change and creating academic knowledge about that change. This means, in my case, to carry out research with a method that comes straight from the heart.

  • Design Decisions and Co-operative Development of Manufacturing Systems
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents contributions within two domains of manufacturing system development. The first domain is systematic design of product and manufacturing system. The second domain is model based co-operative development between manufacturing companies and manufacturing system suppliers. The axiomatic design framework for design is used to describe the product design and the manufacturing system design. The most important contributions are that product properties and analysis of product function are considered when specifying the manufacturing system. The systematic adaptation of product to the selected manufacturing solution is another contribution. A new concept of manufacturing phase functional requirements has been defined in order to cope with requirements from the manufacturing process on the in process product. The co-operative concept is based on the use of ISO 10303-214 for specification and communication of proposed systems and equipment. The concept has been tested using real project information in prototype implementation

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In dialogical action research, the scientific researcher does not "speak science" or otherwise attempt to teach scientific theory to the real-world practitioner, but instead attempts to speak the language of the practitioner and accepts him as the expert on his organization and its problems. Recognizing the difficulty that a practitioner and a scientific researcher can have in communicating across the world of science and the world of practice, dialogical action research offers, as its centerpiece, reflective one-on-one dialogues between the practitioner and the scientific researcher, taking place periodically in a setting removed from the practitioner's organization. The dialogue itself serves as the interface between the world of science, marked by theoria and the scientific attitude, and the world of the practitioner, marked by praxis and the natural attitude of everyday life. The dialogue attempts to address knowledge heterogeneity, which refers to the different forms that knowledge takes in the world of science and the world of practice, and knowledge contextuality, which refers to the dependence of the meaning of knowledge, such as a scientific theory or professional expertise, on its context. In successive dialogues, the scientific researcher and the practitioner build a mutual understanding, including an understanding of the organization and its problems. The scientific researcher, based on one or more of the scientific theories in her discipline, formulates and suggests one or more actions for the practitioner to take in order to solve or remedy a problem in his organization. Dialogical action research recognizes that the practitioner's experience, expertise, and tacit knowledge, or praxis, largely shapes how he understands the suggested actions and appropriates them as his own. Upon returning to his organization, he takes one or more of the suggested actions, depending on his reading of the situation at hand. The reactions or responses of the problem to the actions or stimuli of the practitioner would embody, in the practitioner's eyes, success or failure in solving or remedying the problem and, in the scientific researcher's eyes, evidence confirming or disconfirming the theory on which the action was based. The scientific researcher may then suggest, based on her theories, additional actions, hence initiating another cycle of action and learning. To illustrate dialogical action research, this paper reconstructs some dialogues between an information systems researcher and a managing director at a European company called Omega Corporation.

  • Evaluating research : A multidisciplinary approach to assessing research practice and quality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-7333 .- 1873-7625. ; 45:3, s. 593-603
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are few widely acknowledged quality standards for research practice, and few definitions of what constitutes good research. The overall aim was therefore to describe what constitutes research, and then to use this description to develop a model of research practice and to define concepts related to its quality. The primary objective was to explore such a model and to create a multidisciplinary understanding of the generic dimensions of the quality of research practice. Eight concept modelling working seminars were conducted. A graphic representation of concepts and their relationships was developed to bridge the gap between different disciplines. A concept model of research as a phenomenon was created, which included a total of 18 defined concepts and their relationships. In a second phase four main areas were distilled, describing research practice in a multidisciplinary context: Credible, Contributory, Communicable, and Conforming. Each of these was further specified in a concept hierarchy together with a defined terminology. A comprehensive quality model including 32 concepts, based on the four main areas, was developed for describing quality issues of research practice, where the model of research as a phenomenon was used to define the quality concepts. The quality model may be used for further development of elements, weights and operationalizations related to the quality of research practice in different academic fields. (C) 2015 The Authors. • Management processes : an information perspective on managerial work
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Managers can be seen as information workers who use the raw material of information. The amount of information available for them is for all practical purposes infinite. How can they make the best use of the information available? How can they create a line of action based on that information? These are challenges today's managers are facing. It is challenges like these that justify this study's starting point in the field of information management, in contrast to much previous research on managerial work. In order to create an in-depth understanding of processes in managerial work, this dissertation describes the work of a managing director and his management team over a five year period. The research presented in Management Processes An Information Perspective on Managerial Work includes a description of the longitudinal case study and a thematic analysis of it. Theoretically the study presents a framework for management processes. The study challenges previous research on information requirements in managerial work and offers an analysis of the various roles information plays in managerial communication processes. The findings include frameworks for these roles and for the forces forming agendas in managerial work. The study suggests two layers of management processes: one execution-level and one development-level. The interplay between these layers is described as an important challenge in managerial work. Several practical implications arise from the study. One is the usefulness of searching for the triggers for managerial mindshifts, the information that helps reframe issues on the managerial agenda. Another implication is the importance of identifying driving forces for development-level issues. Identifying such driving forces can help managers to balance action and reflection. It can thus also help them to avoid the execution trap, a focus on execution at the expense of development efforts.

  • Managing Research Out of the Dark? Exploring Implications and Applications of an Objective Model for the Evaluation of Research Practice and Quality
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Rutgers Business Review. - : State University of New Jersey. - 2474-2376 .- 2474-6509. ; 2:3, s. 377-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quality of research is central to scientific organizations. But how to evaluate research practice and quality when managing research? There is not one standard for what “good research” is. In a recent study, we developed a model for evaluating research practice and quality and in this model, there are four core concepts: Credible, Contributory, Communicable, and Conforming. Based on these concepts a model including 32 sub-concepts was developed. The aim of this article is to explore implications and applications of the model using three fundamental perspectives of research management; the process, the organization, and the governance.

  • Minimising the impact of changes and disturbances on manufacturingsystem performance
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Studies in Information and Control. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shorter product life cycles and global competition require manufacturing companies to be much more dynamic. As a consequence, their manufacturing systems are subject to frequent changes (e.g. the introduction of new product variants) and disturbances (e.g. fluctuating demand). Manufacturing systems have to be able to quickly respond to this in order to minimise the impact of disturbances and changes on the manufacturing performance. The aim of this paper is to raise a profound awareness on the mutual constraints that product design, equipment design, and control logic design put upon each other. The paper lists design guidelines to relax these constraints and thereby increase the ability to handle disturbances and unforeseen changes.

    • The aim of this chapter is to investigate change processes and to reveal patterns in terms of typical traps. There are two underlying reasons for this aim: first, to increase our knowledge about change processes, and second, to offer people working with change processes in practice ideas for how their work could be improved.

  • Quality of Research Practice - An interdisciplinary face validity evaluation of a quality model
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 14:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are few acknowledged multidisciplinary quality standards for research practice and evaluation. This study evaluates the face validity of a recently developed comprehensive quality model that includes 32 defined concepts based on four main areas (credible, contributory, communicable, and conforming) describing indicators of research practice quality. Responses from 42 senior researchers working within 18 different departments at three major universities showed that the research quality model was-overall-valid. The vast majority believed all concepts in the model to be important, and did not indicate the need for further development. However, some of the sub-concepts were indicated as being slightly less important. Further, there were significant differences concerning 'communicable' between disciplines and academic levels, and for 'conforming' between genders. Our study indicates that the research quality model proposes the opportunity to move to a more systematic and multidisciplinary approach to research quality improvement, which has implications for how scientific knowledge is obtained.
