  • Weakened growth of cropland-N2O emissions in China associated with nationwide policy interventions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 25:11, s. 3706-3719
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • China has experienced rapid agricultural development over recent decades, accompanied by increased fertilizer consumption in croplands; yet, the trend and drivers of the associated nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remain uncertain. The primary sources of this uncertainty are the coarse spatial variation of activity data and the incomplete model representation of N2O emissions in response to agricultural management. Here, we provide new data-driven estimates of cropland-N2O emissions across China in 1990-2014, compiled using a global cropland-N2O flux observation dataset, nationwide survey-based reconstruction of N-fertilization and irrigation, and an updated nonlinear model. In addition, we have evaluated the drivers behind changing cropland-N2O patterns using an index decomposition analysis approach. We find that China's annual cropland-N2O emissions increased on average by 11.2 Gg N/year(2) (p < .001) from 1990 to 2003, after which emissions plateaued until 2014 (2.8 Gg N/year(2), p = .02), consistent with the output from an ensemble of process-based terrestrial biosphere models. The slowdown of the increase in cropland-N2O emissions after 2003 was pervasive across two thirds of China's sowing areas. This change was mainly driven by the nationwide reduction in N-fertilizer applied per area, partially due to the prevalence of nationwide technological adoptions. This reduction has almost offset the N2O emissions induced by policy-driven expansion of sowing areas, particularly in the Northeast Plain and the lower Yangtze River Basin. Our results underline the importance of high-resolution activity data and adoption of nonlinear model of N2O emission for capturing cropland-N2O emission changes. Improving the representation of policy interventions is also recommended for future projections.

  • Phospholipid film in electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistors
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Organic electronics. - : Elsevier. - 1566-1199 .- 1878-5530. ; 13:4, s. 638-644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A totally innovative electrolyte-gated field effect transistor, embedding a phospholipid film at the interface between the organic semiconductor and the gating solution, is described. The electronic properties of OFETs including a phospholipid film are studied in both pure water and in an electrolyte solution and compared to those of an OFET with the organic semiconductor directly in contact with the gating solution. In addition, to investigate the role of the lipid layers in the charge polarization process and quantify the field-effect mobility, impedance spectroscopy was employed. The results indicate that the integration of the biological film minimizes the penetration of ions into the organic semiconductor thus leading to a capacitive operational mode as opposed to an electrochemical one. The OFETs operate at low voltages with a field-effect mobility in the 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 range and an on/off current ratio of 103. This achievement opens perspectives to the development of FET biosensors potentially capable to operate in direct contact with physiological fluids.

  • Temperature thresholds of ecosystem respiration at a global scale
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Ecology and Evolution. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-334X. ; 5:4, s. 487-494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ecosystem respiration is a major component of the global terrestrial carbon cycle and is strongly influenced by temperature. The global extent of the temperature–ecosystem respiration relationship, however, has not been fully explored. Here, we test linear and threshold models of ecosystem respiration across 210 globally distributed eddy covariance sites over an extensive temperature range. We find thresholds to the global temperature–ecosystem respiration relationship at high and low air temperatures and mid soil temperatures, which represent transitions in the temperature dependence and sensitivity of ecosystem respiration. Annual ecosystem respiration rates show a markedly reduced temperature dependence and sensitivity compared to half-hourly rates, and a single mid-temperature threshold for both air and soil temperature. Our study indicates a distinction in the influence of environmental factors, including temperature, on ecosystem respiration between latitudinal and climate gradients at short (half-hourly) and long (annual) timescales. Such climatological differences in the temperature sensitivity of ecosystem respiration have important consequences for the terrestrial net carbon sink under ongoing climate change.

  • A nanotube/polymer composite biosensing thin-film transistor platform for C-reactive protein detection
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE-NANO 2015 - 15th International Conference on Nanotechnology. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467381550 ; , s. 1282-1284
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, a back-gate thin-film transistor (TFT) based on a single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)/poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-bithiophene) (F8T2) composite semiconductor is proposed as electronic label-free immunosensor for the detection of the C-reactive protein (CRP). The nano-composite semiconducting ultra-thin film is deposited on the channel area of the TFT and is functionalized with a monoclonal anti-CRP antibody coating acting as biorecognition layer. The immunesensor was then used for the selective detection of the CRP both in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution and in human serum samples. The proposed immunosensor exhibits high current (10 - 20 μA) and good field-effect carriers mobility. Furthermore, the CRP could be revealed at a detection limit as low as 1 mg/L and in a wide dynamic range (from 0.4 nM to 2.2 μM).

  • Cardiovascular effects of treadmill exercise in physiological and pathological preclinical settings
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: American journal of physiology. Heart and circulatory physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 1522-1539 .- 0363-6135. ; 300:6, s. H1983-H1989
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Exercise adaptations result from a coordinated response of multiple organ systems, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine-metabolic, immunologic, and skeletal muscle. Among these, the cardiovascular system is the most directly affected by exercise, and it is responsible for many of the important acute changes occurring during physical training. In recent years, the development of animal models of pathological or physiological cardiac overload has allowed researchers to precisely analyze the complex cardiovascular responses to stress in genetically altered murine models of human cardiovascular disease. The intensity-controlled treadmill exercise represents a well-characterized model of physiological cardiac hypertrophy because of its ability to mimic the typical responses to exercise in humans. In this review, we describe cardiovascular adaptations to treadmill exercise in mice and the most important parameters that can be used to quantify such modifications. Moreover, we discuss how treadmill exercise can be used to perform physiological testing in mouse models of disease and to enlighten the role of specific signaling pathways on cardiac function.

  • An underestimated role of precipitation frequency in regulating summer soil moisture
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9326. ; 7:2, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil moisture induced droughts are expected to become more frequent under future global climate change. Precipitation has been previously assumed to be mainly responsible for variability in summer soil moisture. However, little is known about the impacts of precipitation frequency on summer soil moisture, either interannually or spatially. To better understand the temporal and spatial drivers of summer drought, 415 site yr measurements observed at 75 flux sites world wide were used to analyze the temporal and spatial relationships between summer soil water content (SWC) and the precipitation frequencies at various temporal scales, i.e., from half-hourly, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h measurements. Summer precipitation was found to be an indicator of interannual SWC variability with r of 0.49 (p < 0.001) for the overall dataset. However, interannual variability in summer SWC was also significantly correlated with the five precipitation frequencies and the sub-daily precipitation frequencies seemed to explain the interannual SWC variability better than the total of precipitation. Spatially, all these precipitation frequencies were better indicators of summer SWC than precipitation totals, but these better performances were only observed in non-forest ecosystems. Our results demonstrate that precipitation frequency may play an important role in regulating both interannual and spatial variations of summer SWC, which has probably been overlooked or underestimated. However, the spatial interpretation should carefully consider other factors, such as the plant functional types and soil characteristics of diverse ecoregions.
