  • Small Region, Big Impact : Highly Anisotropic Lyman-continuum Escape from a Compact Starburst Region with Extreme Physical Properties
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 955:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extreme, young stellar populations are considered to be the primary contributor to cosmic reionization. How the Lyman continuum (LyC) escapes these galaxies remains highly elusive, and it is challenging to observe this process in actual LyC emitters without resolving the relevant physical scales. We investigate the Sunburst Arc, a strongly lensed LyC emitter at z = 2.37 that reveals an exceptionally small-scale (tens of parsecs) region of high LyC escape. The small (<100 pc) LyC-leaking region has extreme properties: a very blue UV slope (β = −2.9 ± 0.1), a high ionization state ([O iii] λ5007/[O ii] λ3727 = 11 ± 3 and [O iii] λ5007/Hβ = 6.8 ± 0.4), strong oxygen emission (EW([O iii]) = 1095 ± 40 Å), and a high Lyα escape fraction (0.3 ± 0.03), none of which are found in nonleaking regions of the galaxy. The leaking region's UV slope is consistent with approximately "pure" stellar light that is minimally contaminated by the surrounding nebular continuum emission or extinguished by dust. These results suggest a highly anisotropic LyC escape process such that LyC is produced and escapes from a small, extreme starburst region where the stellar feedback from an ionizing star cluster creates one or more "pencil-beam" channels in the surrounding gas through which LyC can directly escape. Such anisotropic escape processes imply that random sight-line effects drive the significant scatters between measurements of galaxy properties and LyC escape fraction, and that strong lensing is a critical tool for resolving the processes that regulate the ionizing budget of galaxies for reionization.

  • The Cosmic Telescope That Lenses the Sunburst Arc, PSZ1 G311.65-18.48 : Strong Gravitational Lensing Model and Source Plane Analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 941:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a strong-lensing analysis of the cluster PSZ1 G311.65−18.48, based on Hubble Space Telescope imaging, archival VLT/MUSE spectroscopy, and Chandra X-ray data. This cool-core cluster (z = 0.443) lenses the brightest lensed galaxy known, dubbed the "Sunburst Arc" (z = 2.3703), a Lyman continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy multiply imaged 12 times. We identify in this field 14 additional strongly lensed galaxies to constrain a strong-lens model and report secure spectroscopic redshifts of four of them. We measure a projected cluster core mass of M(<250 kpc) = M⊙. The two least magnified but complete images of the Sunburst Arc's source galaxy are magnified by ∼13×, while the LyC clump is magnified by ∼4–80×. We present time delay predictions and conclusive evidence that a discrepant clump in the Sunburst Arc, previously claimed to be a transient, is not variable, thus strengthening the hypothesis that it results from an exceptionally high magnification. A source plane reconstruction and analysis of the Sunburst Arc finds its physical size to be 1 × 2 kpc and that it is resolved in three distinct directions in the source plane, 0°, 40°, and 75° (east of north). We place an upper limit of r ≲ 50 pc on the source plane size of unresolved clumps and r ≲ 32 pc for the LyC clump. Finally, we report that the Sunburst Arc is likely in a system of two or more galaxies separated by ≲6 kpc in projection. Their interaction may drive star formation and could play a role in the mechanism responsible for the leaking LyC radiation.

  • Anti-phosphatidylserine/prothrombin antibodies and thrombosis associate positively with HLA-DRB1*13 and negatively with HLA-DRB1*03 in SLE
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Rheumatology. - : Oxford University Press. - 1462-0324 .- 1462-0332. ; 62:2, s. 924-933
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Emerging evidence demonstrates that aPS-PT associate with thrombotic events. Genetic predisposition, including HLA-DRB1 alleles, is known to contribute to the occurrence of conventional aPL [anti-beta(2)glycoprotein-I (anti-beta(2)GPI) and aCL]. We investigated associations between aPS-PT and HLA-DRB1* alleles and thrombosis in SLE. Conventional aPL were included for comparison. Methods: We included 341 consecutive SLE patients, with information on general cardiovascular risk factors, including blood lipids, LA and thrombotic events. aPS/PT, anti-beta(2)GPI and aCL of IgA/G/M isotypes and LA were quantified. Results: aPS/PT antibodies associated positively with HLA-DRB1*13 [odds ratio (OR) 2.7, P = 0.002], whereas anti-beta(2)GPI and aCL antibodies associated primarily with HLA-DRB1*04 (OR 2.5, P = 0.0005). These associations remained after adjustment for age, gender and other HLA-DRB1* alleles. HLA-DRB1*13, but not DRB1*04, remained as an independent risk factor for thrombosis and APS after adjustment for aPL and cardiovascular risk factors. The association between DRB1*13 and thrombosis was mediated by aPS-PT positivity. HLA-DRB1*03, on the other hand, associated negatively with thrombotic events as well as all aPL using both uni- and multivariate analyses. HLA-DRB1*03 had a thrombo-protective effect in aPL-positive patients. Additionally, HLA-DRB1*03 was associated with a favourable lipid profile regarding high-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. Conclusions: HLA-DRB1*13 confers risk for both aPS-PT and thrombotic events in lupus. The association between HLA-DRB1*13 and thrombosis is largely, but not totally, mediated through aPS-PT. HLA-DRB1*03 was negatively associated with aPL and positively with favourable lipid levels. Thus, HLA-DRB1*03 seems to identify a subgroup of SLE patients with reduced vascular risk.

  • The MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Field Survey XII. Mg II emission and absorption in star-forming galaxies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 617
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physical origin of the near-ultraviolet Mg II emission remains an underexplored domain, unlike more typical emission lines that are detected in the spectra of star-forming galaxies. We explore the nebular and physical properties of a sample of 381 galaxies between 0.70 < z < 2.34 drawn from the MUSE Hubble Ultra Deep Survey. The spectra of these galaxies show a wide variety of profiles of the Mg II lambda lambda 2796, 2803 resonant doublet, from absorption to emission. We present a study on the main drivers for the detection of Mg II emission in galaxy spectra. By exploiting photoionization models, we verified that the emission-line ratios observed in galaxies with Mg II in emission are consistent with nebular emission from HII regions. From a simultaneous analysis of MUSE spectra and ancillary Hubble Space Telescope information through spectral energy distribution fitting, we find that galaxies with Mg II in emission have lower stellar masses, smaller sizes, bluer spectral slopes, and lower optical depth than those with absorption. This leads us to suggest that Mg II emission is a potential tracer of physical conditions that are not merely related to those of the ionized gas. We show that these differences in Mg II emission and absorption can be explained in terms of a higher dust and neutral gas content in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies showing Mg II in absorption, which confirms the extreme sensitivity of Mg II to the presence of the neutral ISM. We conclude with an analogy between the Mg II doublet and the Ly alpha line that lies in their resonant nature. Further investigations with current and future facilities, including the James Webb Space Telescope, are promising because the detection of Mg II emission and its potential connection with Ly alpha could provide new insights into the ISM content in the early Universe.

  • The Extended [C II] under Construction? : Observation of the Brightest High-z Lensed Star-forming Galaxy at z=6.2
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 961:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results of [C ii] 158 μm emission line observations, and report the spectroscopic redshift confirmation of a strongly lensed (μ ∼ 20) star-forming galaxy, MACS0308-zD1 at z = 6.2078 ± 0.0002. The [C ii] emission line is detected with a signal-to-noise ratio >6 within the rest-frame UV-bright clump of the lensed galaxy (zD1.1) and exhibits multiple velocity components; the narrow [C ii] has a velocity full width half maximum (FWHM) of 110 ± 20 km s−1, while broader [C ii] is seen with an FWHM of 230 ± 50 km s−1. The broader [C ii] component is blueshifted (−80 ± 20 km s−1) with respect to the narrow [C ii] component, and has a morphology that extends beyond the UV-bright clump. We find that, while the narrow [C ii] emission is most likely associated with zD1.1, the broader component is possibly associated with a physically distinct gas component from zD1.1 (e.g., outflowing or inflowing gas). Based on the nondetection of λ158μm dust continuum, we find that MACS0308-zD1's star formation activity occurs in a dust-free environment indicated by a strong upper limit of infrared luminosity ≲9 × 108L⊙. Targeting this strongly lensed faint galaxy for follow-up Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and JWST observations will be crucial to characterize the details of typical galaxy growth in the early Universe.

  • The clinical utility of anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies and the challenges of their determination.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: JIM - Journal of Immunological Methods. - : Elsevier. - 0022-1759 .- 1872-7905. ; 459, s. 11-19
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Autoantibodies against double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) were first described >60 years ago and although they are still one of the most clinically relevant autoantibodies, test results may be more challenging to interpret compared to other autoantibody tests. They are a serological hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and are included in both the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC) classification criteria for SLE. Furthermore, anti-dsDNA antibodies (a-dsDNA) have been shown to associate with SLE disease activity and coincide with renal involvement. Given their importance and long history, one might assume that immunological tests for a-dsDNA are standardized and give comparable results. However, even though there has been an international reference standard serum (the WHO Wo/80), different methods for the detection of a-dsDNA and tests from different manufacturers give different results for the same samples. This disparity is due to the diversity of possible antibodies generated to this biochemically complex antigen, which may have different clinical associations. The goal of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding the clinical associations with a-dsDNA, highlight challenges in a-dsDNA testing, and elucidate the reasons for discrepant results between methods or manufacturers.

  • Two-Parametric Immunological Score Development for Assessing Renal Involvement and Disease Activity in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Immunology Research. - : HINDAWI LTD. - 2314-8861 .- 2314-7156.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. Anti-double-stranded (ds) DNA and anti-C1q autoantibodies are useful tools in the assessment of disease activity and nephritis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. This study aimed to explore the utility of these antibodies along with anti-Ku antibodies in an oligoparametric model approach for the assessment of disease activity and lupus nephritis. Methods. Samples from 261 well-characterized SLE patients were tested using chemiluminescent immunoassays (CIA) for anti-dsDNA and anti-Ku antibodies as well as by anti-C1q antibody ELISA (Inova Diagnostics, USA). Of these SLE patients, 26.4% had lupus nephritis (LN) at the time of blood draw or had a history of LN, and modified SLE disease activity index-2K (SLEDAI) scores were used to assess disease activity. Results. All three antibodies demonstrated higher prevalence and higher antibody levels in active versus inactive SLE patients and in LN versus non-LN patients. When oligoparametric analysis was performed, the likelihood of LN and patients with active disease increased with dual and triple positivity. Conclusions. Anti-dsDNA and anti-C1q antibodies are useful tools to identify disease activity and/or renal involvement in SLE patients. In addition, the combination of those antibodies in a two-parametric score might improve the clinical utility of those markers.

  • Partial Caging : A Clearance-Based Definition and Deep Learning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728140049 ; , s. 1533-1540

    • Caging grasps limit the mobility of an object to a bounded component of configuration space. We introduce a notion of partial cage quality based on maximal clearance of an escaping path. As this is a computationally demanding task even in a two-dimensional scenario, we propose a deep learning approach. We design two convolutional neural networks and construct a pipeline for real-time partial cage quality estimation directly from 2D images of object models and planar caging tools. One neural network, CageMaskNN, is used to identify caging tool locations that can support partial cages, while a second network that we call CageClearanceNN is trained to predict the quality of those configurations. A dataset of 3811 images of objects and more than 19 million caging tool configurations is used to train and evaluate these networks on previously unseen objects and caging tool configurations. Furthermore, the networks are trained jointly on configurations for both 3 and 4 caging tool configurations whose shape varies along a 1-parameter family of increasing elongation. In experiments, we study how the networks' performance depends on the size of the training dataset, as well as how to efficiently deal with unevenly distributed training data. In further analysis, we show that the evaluation pipeline can approximately identify connected regions of successful caging tool placements and we evaluate the continuity of the cage quality score evaluation along caging tool trajectories. Experiments show that evaluation of a given configuration on a GeForce GTX 1080 GPU takes less than 6 ms.

  • A highly magnified star at redshift 6.2
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 603:7903, s. 815-818
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Galaxy clusters magnify background objects through strong gravitational lensing. Typical magnifications for lensed galaxies are factors of a few but can also be as high as tens or hundreds, stretching galaxies into giant arcs(1,2). Individual stars can attain even higher magnifications given fortuitous alignment with the lensing cluster. Recently, several individual stars at redshifts between approximately 1 and 1.5 have been discovered, magnified by factors of thousands, temporarily boosted by microlensing(3-6). Here we report observations of a more distant and persistent magnified star at a redshift of 6.2 +/- 0.1, 900 million years after the Big Bang. This star is magnified by a factor of thousands by the foreground galaxy cluster lens WHL0137-08 (redshift 0.566), as estimated by four independent lens models. Unlike previous lensed stars, the magnification and observed brightness (AB magnitude, 27.2) have remained roughly constant over 3.5 years of imaging and follow-up. The delensed absolute UV magnitude, -10 +/- 2, is consistent with a star of mass greater than 50 times the mass of the Sun. Confirmation and spectral classification are forthcoming from approved observations with the James Webb Space Telescope.

  • JWST Imaging of Earendel, the Extremely Magnified Star at Redshift z=6.2
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 940
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gravitationally lensed star WHL 0137-LS, nicknamed Earendel, was identified with a photometric redshift z (phot) = 6.2 +/- 0.1 based on images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Camera images of Earendel in eight filters spanning 0.8-5.0 mu m. In these higher-resolution images, Earendel remains a single unresolved point source on the lensing critical curve, increasing the lower limit on the lensing magnification to mu > 4000 and restricting the source plane radius further to r < 0.02 pc, or similar to 4000 au. These new observations strengthen the conclusion that Earendel is best explained by an individual star or multiple star system and support the previous photometric redshift estimate. Fitting grids of stellar spectra to our photometry yields a stellar temperature of T (eff) similar to 13,000-16,000 K, assuming the light is dominated by a single star. The delensed bolometric luminosity in this case ranges from log(L)=5.8 L-theta, which is in the range where one expects luminous blue variable stars. Follow-up observations, including JWST NIRSpec scheduled for late 2022, are needed to further unravel the nature of this object, which presents a unique opportunity to study massive stars in the first billion years of the universe.
