  • Monitoring compliance with labour standards : restriction of economic freedoms or effective protection of rights?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Regulating transnational labour in Europe. - Oslo : Privaträttsfondet. - 9788272362392 - 8272362392 ; , s. 187-216
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • From a labour law perspective different institutional arrangements for monitoring employment conditions are analysed primarily as means of effective protection of rights. From the perspective of market integration and particularly the free mobement of services, on the other hand, national monitoring measures are analysed primarily as restrictions of economic freedoms. The aim of this chapter is to analyse how these different perspectives on arrangements for monitoring labour standards for posted workers are reflected in the position taken by the EU institutions and the Member States.

  • Sömnstörningar hos barn : kunskapsdokument
  • 2015

  • EPA supplementation improves teacher-rated behaviour and oppositional symptoms in children with ADHD
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 99:10, s. 1540-1549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: Measure efficacy of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 0.5 g EPA or placebo (15 weeks) in 92 children (7-12 years) with ADHD. Efficacy measure was Conners' Parent/Teacher Rating Scales (CPRS/CTRS). Fatty acids were analysed in serum phospholipids and red blood cell membranes (RBC) at baseline and endpoint with gas chromatography. Results: EPA improved CTRS inattention/cognitive subscale (p = 0.04), but not Conners' total score. In oppositional children (n = 48), CTRS total score improved >= 25% in 48% of the children receiving EPA vs. 9% for placebo [effect size (ES) 0.63, p = 0.01]. In less hyperactive/impulsive children (n = 44), >= 25% improvement was seen in 36% vs. 18% (ES 0.41, n.s.), and with both these types of symptoms 8/13 with EPA vs. 1/9 for placebo improved >= 25% (p = 0.03). Children responding to treatment had lower EPA concentrations (p = 0.02), higher AA/EPA (p = 0.005) and higher AA/DHA ratios (p = 0.03) in serum at baseline. Similarly, AA/EPA (p = 0.01), AA/DHA (p = 0.038) and total omega-6/omega-3 ratios (p = 0.028) were higher in RBC, probably because of higher AA (p = 0.011). Conclusion: Two ADHD subgroups (oppositional and less hyperactive/impulsive children) improved after 15-week EPA treatment. Increasing EPA and decreasing omega-6 fatty acid concentrations in phospholipids were related to clinical improvement.

  • The educational challenge in "education for sustainable development" : qualification, social change and the political
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores how Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an overarching perspective makes meaningof educational aims and purposes. Sustainable development, as a concept, is by necessity complex, and deals withintegrated dimensions of environmental, social-cultural and economic sustainability. It involves a diverse range ofembedded values and ideologies and calls for engagement in value-related and political issues relating to environment, equality and lifestyle. In my thesis, I have turned to the actors in social practice who are set to realise the educationalperspectives of ESD – the teachers. Accordingly, the analyses departure from secondary and upper secondary schoolteachers’ reciprocal meaning-making when discussing the desirable aims of teaching and ESD. Building upon previouseducational research, the thesis has three purposes, and the results are presented in four articles. The results of thestudies bring new empirical knowledge and perspectives to educational research and practice, by adding furtherunderstanding of the political and democratic dimensions of ESD.The first purpose is to investigate and describe the complexity of the concept of sustainable development from a conflictperspective and to analyse meaning-making discussions of sustainability in an educational context. This is elaborated inthe first study (Article I). To achieve this, a Conflict Reflection Tool (CRT) has been developed, by combining theconflicting dynamics of sustainable development with dialogic and univocal functions of speech. In the included casestudy, the CRT analysis of teachers’ discussions shows how fact-based, univocal science utterances closed thediscussion for conflicting perspectives to emerge. However, conflicting views did emerge and were re-valued in adialogic genre through the interplay of different dimensions of sustainability and different societal levels of conflicts. The second purpose is to investigate how the desired aims of ESD are (re)articulated in areas of educational tension inorder to make particular meaning by teachers with experience in ESD practice. Three complex ESD areas are in focus, namely, the development of students as political subjects (Article II), qualification in relation to ESD (Article III), andeducation for social change in relation to ‘sustainable’ living (Article IV). In each of these areas, the functions ofqualification, socialisation and subjectification (c.f. Biesta) are relationally analysed to further problematise educationalpurposes. Through analyses with inpiration from discourse theory, the results show in Article II the emerging discourse ofcritical thinking as room for subjectification where students were invited to be adressed as political subjects. This discoursewas articulated in struggle with the aims of qualification and socialisation, i.e. challenged by elements articulating a morescientific and rational worldview. Article III shows three discourses of qualification. Of these three, scientific reasoningand awareness of complexity are articulated as contrasting epistemological discourses of qualification. However, in thethird discourse, qualification as critical thinking, these different epistemological views are articulated as intertwined asdifferent ways to view sustainability. Article IV shows how the teachers struggle between three positions: the rationalsubject, as a neutral conductor; the responsible subject, as a role model, or the reconstructing subject, as a reconstructor. The overlapping positions depend upon how socialisation towards sustainable lifestyles, political and ethical perspectivesare identified in relation to the educational aims and the emerging myths of social change. The third purpose is to develop analytical methods where conflicting articulations of environmental issues andsustainability are taken into account based on language and discourse theory for conducting empirical investigations ofmeaning-making.

  • Contrasting arctic and mainstream Swedish descriptions of Northern Sweden : the view from established domestic research
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Arctic. - : Arctic Institute of North America. - 0004-0843 .- 1923-1245. ; 66:3, s. 351-365
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2011, Sweden released its first-ever Arctic strategy, in preparation for taking over the chairmanship of the Arctic Council, an eight-state cooperation organization. The recent political development that will include Sweden more extensively in Arctic regional cooperation makes it relevant to review and comment on the image of the areas involved from a Swedish viewpoint and to improve the often very brief descriptions of northernmost Sweden in Arctic literature. In this paper, we contrast descriptions of the Arctic in the Arctic Human Development Report (AHDR) with descriptions of northern Sweden in established domestic demographic and regional development research. The study shows that many of the assumptions in the first AHDR to the effect that the eight "Arctic" regions are rather directly comparable in fact reveal substantial differences between areas, with northern Sweden standing in sharp contrast to many of the descriptions. Instead of having a population that is very small, young, and rapidly growing because of a high birth rate, northern Sweden is characterized by relatively dense habitation with a stable and aging population of long-term residents. Moreover, it has a very small and relatively integrated indigenous population with largely the same health situation as in Sweden overall. While depopulation and urbanization are evident in its less populated areas, migration from the region is partly directed at the larger regional centres in the area, following a pattern seen in the Western world at large.

  • New motives for migration? : On interregional mobility in the nordic context
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this thesis is migrants’ motives and the outcomes of interregional migration, as well as how the propensity for interregional migration has changed for different groups over the past three decades. The background consists of a discussion on the role of the labour market in long-distance migration decisions and a discussion on how social and economic change affect the context in which migration decisions are made. The thesis consists of four empirical studies presented in four separate papers. The studies derive from two sources of data. Papers I and II are based on a Nordic survey, while Papers III and IV draw from Swedish population register data. Paper I focuses on migrants’ perceptions of the migration decision, motives, voluntariness, attitudes and values, based on a survey. The conclusion of this paper is that employment is by no means a dominating motive from the migrant’s perspective. Additionally, very few migrants explicitly express a sense of being forced to migrate against their will. Paper II is also based on the survey and examines the migrants’ perceptions of the outcome of migration in economic and non-economic terms. This paper further supports the view that employment and income gain are in most cases subordinate in the migration decision from the individual migrants’ point of view. Paper III is a register study comparing the composition of interregional migrants in Sweden during the period 1970-2001. In this study, it becomes evident that the increase in migration rates in the 1990’s was an effect of increased migration among young people. Compared to 1970, increasingly more people migrated during a time in life when they were not yet established on the labour market and had no family. Paper IV is also a register study comparing the effect of commuting potential on migration propensity in Sweden during the period 1970-2001. This paper concludes that increased commuting should be interpreted as a result of, rather than an explanation for, long-distance migration reluctance. Migration literature suggests that long-distance migration is primarily labour-market induced. This is evident in the sense that long-distance migration requires a new job in a new locality for those who are in the labour force, but this study show that this does not necessarily mean that employment is the main motive in the migrant’s mind; the trigger is usually something else, often related to social relationships. The pattern of interregional migration has changed over time. Compared to the 1970’s, more people now migrate at a time when they are not established on the labour market, and other considerations besides employment are thus more relevant. An important explanation for the current immobility among families and employed persons is attributed to the increase in dual-career households during the period studied. This has changed the aggregated migration behaviour everywhere, regardless of commuting potential, but enhanced constraints for interregional migration in this group could be seen as an explanation for the observed increase in commuting.

  • The Vaxholm case from a Swedish and European perspective
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Transfer. - Brussels : European Trade Union Institute. - 1024-2589. ; 12:2, s. 155-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Vaxholm (or Laval) case concerns an industrial action undertaken on a building site in Vaxholm, a town not far from Stockholm, Sweden. The work was performed by Latvian workers employed by a Latvian company. In order to put pressure on the company to conclude a collective agreement the Swedish Building workers’ union initiated industrial action, including a ban on all building and installation. This blockade was supported by the Electricians’ Union through a secondary action. Both the primary and the secondary actions were lawful under Swedish law. The case raises the question whether the industrial action or Swedish law is contrary to Community law on the free movement of services or the Posted Workers Directive. The case is now pending before the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The aim of this article is to present the background and context of the Vaxholm case for a non-Swedish audience and to outline the main issues of legal interpretation at stake, as well as their background in the Swedish industrial relations system and in Swedish and European law. The authors also point to some probable solutions in the light of earlier case-law of the ECJ.

  • ADHD and Disruptive Behavior scores - associations with MAO-A and 5-HTT genes and with platelet MAO-B activity in adolescents
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: BMC Psychiatry. - 1471-244X. ; 8, s. 28-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Pharmacological and genetic studies suggest the importance of the dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic systems in the pathogenesis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Disruptive Behavior Disorder (DBD). We have, in a population-based sample, studied associations between dimensions of the ADHD/DBD phenotype and Monoamine Oxidase B (MAO-B) activity in platelets and polymorphisms in two serotonergic genes: the Monoamine Oxidase A Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (MAO-A VNTR) and the 5-Hydroxytryptamine Transporter gene-Linked Polymorphic Region (5-HTT LPR). METHODS: A population-based sample of twins, with an average age of 16 years, was assessed for ADHD/DBD with a clinical interview; Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). Blood was drawn from 247 subjects and analyzed for platelet MAO-B activity and polymorphisms in the MAO-A and 5-HTT genes. RESULTS: We found an association in girls between low platelet MAO-B activity and symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). In girls, there was also an association between the heterozygote long/short 5-HTT LPR genotype and symptoms of conduct disorder. Furthermore the heterozygote 5-HTT LPR genotype in boys was found to be associated with symptoms of Conduct Disorder (CD). In boys, hemizygosity for the short MAO-A VNTR allele was associated with disruptive behavior. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that the serotonin system, in addition to the dopamine system, should be further investigated when studying genetic influences on the development of Disruptive Behavior Disorders.

  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and disruptive behavior disorders in adolescence related to levels of platelet MAO-B and polymorphisms in two candidate genes
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD) (including Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD)), are common developmental and behaviour diagnoses among adolescents. Several of their symptoms, have been linked to genotypes (e.g. monoamine oxidase A Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (MAO-A VNTR) and the 5–HydroxyTryptamine Transporter gene-Linked Polymorphic Region (5-HTT LPR)) as well as to platelet Monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity. Aim: 1) To study the symptoms of ADHD and DBD phenotypes in adolescents and their association with MAO-B activity in platelets, MAO-A VNTR and 5-HTT LPR genotypes separately and in combination. 2) To describe the complexity of the phenotypes in relation to various psychiatric problems and risk behaviours. 3) To investigate psychiatric and behavioural symptoms separately, rather than the complete diagnosis and their association with individual and combinations of candidate genes. Methods: A population-based sample of twins including 177 girls and 135 boys was interviewed using the Swedish version of Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). Diagnoses of ADHD and DBD were compiled based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) diagnostic criteria. Blood was drawn from the subjects and analysed for platelet MAO-B activity and polymorphisms in the MAO-A VNTR and 5-HTT LPR genotypes. Results: 1) For both boys and girls the heterozygote 5-HTT LPR genotype was found to be related to symptoms of CD. Girls exhibited an association between low platelet MAO-B activity and symptoms of ODD and DBD. An association was found in boys between the short MAO-A VNTR allele and symptoms of DBD, as well as between ADHD-like problems and the presence of a short 5-HTT LPR or short MAO-A VNTR allele, in combination with high levels of platelet MAO-B enzyme activity. 2) In girls, subthreshold diagnoses of ADHD and DBD coexisted with symptoms of depression, mania, panic attacks, phobias, anorexia nervosa, motor tics and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while in boys with symptoms of depression and PTSD. In both boys and girls, smoking and high alcohol consumption contributed to a high risk of having these phenotypes. 3) The combination of low MAO-B activity in platelets and polymorphism in the 5- HTT LPR genotype was associated with several psychiatric symptoms. Conclusions: Polymorphisms in the 5-HTT LPR and MAO-A VNTR as well as MAO-B activity platelet separately and in combination are related to both ADHD and DBD. The complexity of the ADHD and DBD phenotypes was shown by the association with several psychiatric and behavioural problems. A broad clinical assessment is needed for adolescents with such preliminary diagnoses and the serotonergic system should be further investigated when studying genetic influences on the complex ADHD and DBD phenotypes.

  • Psychiatric problems associated with subthreshold ADHD and disruptive behaviour diagnoses in teenagers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : Wiley. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 100:11, s. 1468-1475
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: To study the coexistence of subthreshold diagnoses of both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disruptive behaviour disorders (DBD) with other symptoms of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders as well as risk behaviours associated with smoking, alcohol and drug use. Methods: A population-based sample of twins including 177 girls and 135 boys was interviewed using the Swedish version of Kiddie-SADS Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL). Subthreshold diagnoses were compiled based on the ADHD and DBD criteria, where each criterion was assessed as 'possible' or 'certain' according to K-SADS-PL. The odds ratios (OR) between the subthreshold diagnoses and each of the screening questions in K-SADS-PL were calculated. Results: Subthreshold diagnoses of ADHD and DBD coexisted with the screening questions concerning depression, mania, panic attack, phobias, anorexia nervosa, motor tics and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in girls. In boys, these subthreshold diagnoses coexisted with symptoms of depression and PTSD. For both boys and girls, smoking and high alcohol consumption contributed to a high OR with regard to ADHD and DBD. Conclusion: Subthreshold diagnoses of ADHD and DBD were risk factors for several other psychiatric symptoms as well as smoking and high alcohol consumption. Thus, a broad clinical assessment is needed for adolescents with such preliminary diagnoses.

  • Go West : East European migrants in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Many people have migrated between East and West Europe in recent decades. The daily life of these migrants is crucial not only for the migrants themselves but also for the development of future migration. The aim of this thesis is to explore the interaction between migration motives, integration, social networks and migration, and how this affects international migration processes in general. This is done using migration between Sweden on the one hand and Russia, Poland and the Baltic States on the other as a case study. The thesis consists of three empirical studies which derive from different sources of data: the first (Paper I) draws on individual Swedish register data while the second and third are based upon a questionnaire survey. Paper I explores aspects of transnational social spaces in the context of migration from the non-Baltic former Soviet republics to Sweden before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. The results of this paper show rather limited migration and a lack of a more developed transnational social space. This is partly due to weak integration on the labour market, a high degree of intermarriage, no existing migrant community and limited return migration. The following two papers (II, III) focus on migrants from Russia, Poland and the Baltic States to Sweden after 1990. Paper II analyses migration motives and the outcome of the migration decision, and reveals significant gender differences in the motives for migrating and in how men and women adapt in their new country of living. While men mainly came for economic reasons, the majority of women came for intermarriage in Sweden; however, the migration motives have changed over time towards more economic ones. The final paper (III) shows significant gender differences in the migrants’ perceived sense of belonging in Sweden. Women report a stronger sense of belonging than their male counterparts, and while men’s sense of belonging is mainly affected by duration of stay in Sweden, language proficiency and citizenship, women’s sense of belonging is shown to be mostly affected by local social networks. In sum, the results in this thesis show that migration systems and transnational social spaces between Sweden and the respective countries have not yet emerged. This is partly due to the specific migrant composition and integration that characterize this migration process. The immigrants mainly function as weak bridgeheads, and do not facilitate the development of any further migration. However, with a changing migration flow, including migrants with different motives and migration agendas, future migrants can be stronger bridgeheads and facilitate further development of migration systems and transnational social spaces.

  • Associations of MAOA-VNTR or 5HTT-LPR alleles with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms are moderated by platelet monoamine oxidase B activity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Psychiatric Genetics. - 0955-8829 .- 1473-5873. ; 22:1, s. 42-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The monoamine systems have been suggested to play a role in the biological basis of ADHD symptoms. Thus, polymorphisms in e.g. the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) and the serotonin transporter (5HTT) genes have been associated with ADHD like phenotypes. Furthermore, platelet MAOB activity has frequently been linked to impulsiveness-related traits. In the present paper, we have studied ADHD symptoms with regard to the combination of platelet MAOB activity and MAOAVNTR or 5HTT-LPR genotype. The study group consisted of 156 adolescent twin pairs, i.e. 312 individuals, who were used in a previous study (Malmberg et al., 2008). ADHD symptoms were scored with a structured clinical interview of both the twin and a parent using Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version. Presence of a short 5HTT-LPR or short MAOA-VNTR allele, in combination with high levels of platelet MAOB enzyme activity was associated with higher scores of ADHD like problems (p<0.001; p<0.01, respectively). This reexamination of ADHD scores in a non-clinical sample suggests that effects of the MAOA-VNTR and 5HTT-LPR are moderated by platelet MAOB activity.

  • Two-Eyed Seeing and Scientific Holism in a New Science|Environment|Health Pedagogy
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Science|Environment|Health (S|E|H) is a new science pedagogy that aims at promoting the mutual benefit between the three educational fields of science education, environmental education, and health education. Holism and its conceptualisation has become an important topic in recent S|E|Hwork. In this paper, featuring the invited symposium of the ESERA special interest group 4 at the ESERA conference 2021, we suggest the concept of Two-Eyed Seeing as a basis for the definition of scientific holism in S|E|H. Two-Eyed Seeing as a metaphor was introduced by science education researchers working with Canadian aborigines. Based on Sellars’s concept of stereoscopic view, we conceptualize Two-Eyed Seeing in S|E|H through an ontological framework. We define scientificholism as the “eye switch” from the scientific image to students’ life-world image, a transition that we consider as equally important as the - more common - reductionist “eye switch” from students’ life-worlds back to the scientific image. Two-Eyed Seeing may then be understood as a continuouscirculation of repeated “eye switches” between life-world image and scientific image. We illustrate this approach by three symposium contributions - communicating the meta-organism in school, scientific holism against eco- and health depression, and a holistic visual tool to approach S|E|H competences – and we discuss consequences for teaching and research in science education. We point out that, in a new S|E|H pedagogy and beyond, Two-Eyed Seeing may be a helpful extension to the well-established socio-scientific issues approach. © 2022 by the Author(s).

    • Science|Environment|Health (S|E|H) is a new science pedagogy that aims at promoting the mutual benefit between the three educational fields of science education, environmental education, and health education. Holism and its conceptualisation have become an important topic in recent S|E|H work. In this paper, featuring the invited symposium of the ESERA special interest group 4 at the ESERA conference 2021, we suggest the concept of Two-Eyed Seeing as a basis for the definition of scientific holism in S|E|H. Two-Eyed Seeing as a metaphor was introduced by science education researchers working with Canadian Indigenous citizens. Based on Sellars’s concept of stereoscopic view, we conceptualise Two-Eyed Seeing in S|E|H through an ontological framework. We define scientific holism as the “eye switch” from the scientific image to students’ life-world image, a transition that we consider as equally important as the – more common – reductionist “eye switch” from students’ life-worlds back to the scientific image. Two-Eyed Seeing may then be understood as a continuous circulation of repeated “eye switches” between life-world image and scientific image. We illustrate this approach through three symposium contributions – communicating the meta-organism in school, scientific holism against eco- and health depression, and a holistic visual tool to approach S|E|H competencies – and we discuss consequences for teaching and research in science education. Finally, we point out that, in a new S|E|H pedagogy and beyond, Two-Eyed Seeing may be a helpful extension to the well-established socio-scientific issues approach. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
