- The original AIDAH environment intends to generate cross-disciplinary research and implementation projects for a sustainable built environment that confront three major challenges. (1) Increasingly diverse demands on the housing market call for flexibility and adaptability in resilient ways. (2) An ageing society requires new residential models that combine dignity and appropriate care but also provide good working environments for personnel. (3) Profound changes in technical conditions for caring and medical treatment necessitate rethinking traditional healthcare situations, developing new situations ranging from complex care in residence to intensive care units in hospital and patient hotels. Sustainability issues at stake in patterns of residential behaviour must be considered to have paramount importance in any strategy for a resilient urban future. The involved teams provide different and complementary perspectives focusing on the common notion of quality of residence considered in architectural, spatial and experiential properties of built environments for housing and healthcare contexts. The applied conceptual and theoretical framework focuses on architectural and caring innovations for reconfigured spatial situations that enhance sustainable caring, and improve health, welfare, and living quality. Our research effort will focus on identifying and characterizing strategies directed towards the integration of different ways of residing. The scientific integration in conceptual and methodological terms between architecture qualitative research, sociology of residence, and caring sciences is intended to bridge gaps and initiate cross disciplinary approaches. Objectives include identifying and articulating new resilient qualities in designs supporting care processes and healing environments, thereby providing new operational knowledge developed in close collaboration with diverse stakeholders. International exchanges will provide further strategic evidence-based design support for decision makers in planning, building and healthcare services. The cross-disciplinary teams of researchers from architectural design, social and caring sciences are based at the Centre for Healthcare Architecture and the CIB W069 Residential Studies, both hosted by Chalmers.

The present study protocol, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods, was developed in order to explore the impact of architectural design on enablers and barriers in the delivery of home healthcare services. An interdisciplinary research team, drawn from the fields of architecture, healthcare, and occupational sciences, will execute the forthcoming study. This study protocol describes the design of that study, which will explore the relation between residential design and the conditions for care in ordinary housing.

- Our aim was to explore enablers and barriers in ordinary housing for older people in care. We systematically searched Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for relevant published research and gray material. The search resulted in a final sample of eight publications, four of which focused on accessibility for older people with dementia. Thematic analysis resulted in two themes: safety and accessibility. Future studies should focus on modifications to ordinary housing to achieve safe and comfortable environments for people who want to age in place and those who provide them with care.

- A growing number of old citizens and fewer working to support them is a reality in Sweden. More knowledge about assisted living facilities is crucial in creating appropriate care environments for the oldest. The study is part of a PhD project that explores use and usability in assisted living facilities for the old in Gothenburg, Sweden. This paper reports upon the observation study conducted November 2009-February 2010 in five facilities in Gothenburg, along with the other methods used in the PhD project. The aim of this study is to observe the daily use and thereby identify factors in the physical environment, affecting usability. Some preliminary findings are accounted for. Semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire survey are scheduled for 2011-2012. The city of Gothenburg and Chalmers finance the project and are the primary users of the results.

- OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study examines the function and use of common spaces in assisted living facilities (ALFs) from the residential and workplace perspectives.BACKGROUND: The impact of the physical environment on human activities in healthcare settings has been emphasized in many studies. Few studies, however, have explored the daily use of common spaces and theimpact on the usability of ALFs.METHODS: Four explorative methods–observation, group interviews, individual interviews, and questionnaires—were used to investigate 14 ALFs in Sweden. The study involves residents, staff, relatives, architects, and people responsible for planning and construction of eldercare.This research strategy combines quantitative and qualitative methods to enhance the validity of the results. Method triangulation and data triangulationwere used and the data were analyzed using Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA).RESULTS: The results show that residents and staff have different objectives for use and these differences affect usability, although explicit conflicts are rare. The residents, staff, and other stakeholders have differentviews about the demarcation of home and workplace and the role of common spaces as venues for social interaction.CONCLUSIONS: Both the residential and the workplace perspective must be considered when planning assisted living facilities. Otherwise, inherent conflicts between these perspectives will manifest as a result of thephysical design. Common spaces have diverse functions that are reflected in their spatial organization. Therefore, ALFs should be designed so the intended function of a specific space is apparent to all users.

- Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to map significant features of the physical design of nine recently planned facilities for forensic psychiatric care in Sweden. The present paper is focused on differences in the physical design, static security adaptations, visions and goals for the projects, economy and steering processes. Design/methodology/approach – In June 2008, records concerning major forensic psychiatric construction projects, planned or carried out between 1970 and 2008, were requested from all 21 regions in Sweden. The documents were collected, organized, critically examined, and analyzed in their contexts. Extensive data have also been retrieved from the internet. Findings – In spite of the common national legislation governing forensic psychiatric care, the projects show great diversity in the physical design and, after 2006, increasing emphasis on static security. The collected material indicates different visions and goals and little coordination between them. It also suggests that the decisions rarely have been preceded by scientific studies or, as it appears, systematic needs assessments. There were also considerable variations in the interpretation of the legislation stipulating public access to official documentation and the time-frame allowed for such requests. Research limitations/implications – Limitations of the project especially relate to the incompleteness of the documents received. Originality/value – This mainly descriptive paper provides an overview of contemporary Swedish forensic psychiatric construction projects, planned for or realized after 2000. This paper points out structural and physical differences between these projects. The systematised documents are made available for research purposes within different disciplines.

- This participant observation study was conducted November 2009-February 2010 in 14 units in five assistantliving facilities for the old in Gothenburg, Sweden. The aim is to study the daily use and aspects of use, related tothe design of the physical environments. Areas of interest, based upon these aspects and related to usability, arepresented and discussed in this paper. The study is the first part of a case study, within a PhD-project, comprisingparticipant observations and qualitative interviews. More knowledge about assisted living facilities is asked forboth by the eldercare providers and by the construction clients in order to enable appropriate care environmentsfor the oldest. This knowledge is now produced in the architecture academies. The City of Gothenburg andChalmers jointly finance the project and are the primary users of the project results. This paper presents anddiscusses some preliminary findings and gives a short description of methods and the research field.

- This study explores how common spaces in assisted living schemes for older persons are used by the residents. Observation studies, group interviews with staff and individual interviews with residents, relatives, architects and key stakeholders in the context of Swedish elder-care were conducted. Common spaces are the major location for in-house social interaction on the units. The results show a higher presenceon the dementia units, compared to the somatic units. No significant correlation was found between the residents’ mobility limitations and their degree of presence in the common spaces. The results also suggest a contradiction between the staff’s intentions to provide a social context and the capabilities of the residents. Although common spaces are not used much between meals, the residents stress their importance for social interaction, suggesting that common spaces have important qualitative aspects, rather than quantitative. The results also how that few of the residents used the common spaces together with their relatives. The increasing use of assistive technology creates a shortage of space, suggesting a conflict between the efforts to create a home-like environment and the use of assistive technology.

- To meet the demographic development, measures were initiated by the Swedish government entailing changed conditions for municipal eldercare, such as assisted living. Participant observation is used to study the daily use of common spaces in 14 assisted living units in Gothenburg. The results show examples where the currentuse diverges from the intended use and suggest diverging objectives and conflicts of use. The observations indicate that the degree of usability is determined by the physical environment itself in some cases, by the users and by changes in use in other cases, and by a combination of both in some cases.

- Purpose: Initial briefs (programs) were examined in order to obtain an overview of current practice in documenting the briefing process for new health care buildings in Sweden. Methodology: An audit instrument was developed and used to examine briefs for the content and quality of information and to determine whether and to what extent the information was comprehensive and patient oriented. Findings: The results indicate that few strategic briefs make use of evidence to support their statements. Moreover, few briefs had an explicitly patient-focused goal for the project or measurable outcomes. Implication for practice: This new audit approach can be applied in various organisations and over time to improve the briefing process and create clearer goals and guidelines. Originality/value: The present study contributes with an audit of written briefs. The question of whether the use of briefing and a systematic brief make a significant contribution to the high quality of design solutions remains unanswered, as is also the case of whether the brief, in general, reflects the briefing process. Despite the recent focus on improving the quality of the briefing process, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the documentation resulting from the briefing process. Studies are needed that employ different approaches in order to accept or reject the assumption that the briefs are an accurate reflection of the briefing process.

- Problem and rationale The pre-design phase, before architectural design details are presented is important for the success of the entire construction process. In this phase, it is important to identify the needs of the users and the organization. The present project describes a group-modeling project with system dynamics (SD) in the pre-design phase of a new dementia care environment. The aim was to support a dynamic design process that was oriented towards the users needs. SD uses models to create scenarios and experiment with different solutions to understand complex problems. The method is interactive and suited for group- modeling. The tools used are a construction of a diagram depicting the system and a mathematical model for scenario experiments. Methods and procedureThe group- modeling was performed during five workshops with stakeholders from the organization. The data for the model was collected through discussions with the modeling group, a questionnaire, literature reviews and documents. The process was documented by video-recording and field notes. The participants were interviewed at the end of the project. The data was analyzed by content analysis. ResultsResult show that the modeling process supported the group to explicitly express their goal regarding care. The modeling process moved the group discussions from space solutions and square meters to the goals of the care process. The model developed illustrates a modern perspective of dementia care. Conclusions Group-modeling using SD is interesting for the pre-design process. It can be feasible for linking strategic planning of the organization with the plan over the new healthcare environment since it moves the participants in the pre-design phase to focus on important issues about the care and away from a wish list of various needed spaces, commonly achieved in traditional planning processes.

- Background: Current research shows a relationship between healthcare architecture and patient-related outcomes. The planning and designing of new healthcare environments is a complex process. The needs of the various end users of the environment must be considered, including the patients, the patients' significant others, and the staff. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of healthcare professionals participating in group modeling utilizing system dynamics in the predesign phase of new healthcare environments. We engaged healthcare professionals in a series of workshops using system dynamics to discuss the planning of healthcare environments in the beginning of a construction and then interviewed them about their experience. Methods: An explorative and qualitative design was used to describe participants' experiences of participating in the group-modeling projects. Participants (N = 20) were recruited from a larger intervention study using group modeling and system dynamics in planning and designing projects. The interviews were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Results: Two themes were formed, representing the experiences in the group-modeling process: Participation in the group modeling generated knowledge and was empowering and Participation in the group modeling differed from what was expected and required the dedication of time and skills. Conclusions: The method can support participants in design teams to focus more on their healthcare organization, their care activities, and their aims rather than focusing on detailed layout solutions. This clarification is important when decisions about the design are discussed and prepared and will most likely lead to greater readiness for future building process.

- This paper presents a pilot study on the process of providing premises and its result in means of meeting the clients´ expectations. The pilot study is part of a larger study investigating the efficiency in processes of providing facilities in the healthcare sector. The outset for the larger study is that a common opinion among representatives of core business and corporate real estate is that the finished projects do not meet expectations regarding usability and function for core business. A small number of Swedish public real estate companies have been transformed into service organizations. .A discussion whether to use a real estate organizational form or a service organization is rooted in the increased demands of achieving efficient and usable buildings satisfying the users needs. Two main questions were set up in this pilot study: i) In which ways does the organization form or structures impact the process of providing premises? and ii) How does the way of organization impact the individuals possibilities to act in the process of providing premises? The purpose of the study presented is thus to analyse the role of the organizational form and the individuals possibilities to act in the process of providing premises in terms of how they achieve fulfilment of expectations regarding usability for the healthcare core business. Tentative results in this paper based on the pilot study are that results from a project by means of meeting the clients´ expectations, quite contrary to an early assumption, do not depend on the organizational form or structure in the providing organization. The study is based on interviews and the result shows that all of the interviewed actors mean that the form of the organization has little direct impact on the result of the process of providing premises; it is how the actor views their work tasks that make the difference for the result. On the other hand, these views depend on the fundamental values in the organization.

Med Klokboken vill vi inspirera, bredda kunskaperna och bidra till mer kunskapsbaserade beslutsunderlag. Den är tänkt att underlätta för byggherrar, arkitekter, planerare, beslutsfattare med flera som vill skapa bostäder för seniorer. Vi tror att det finns ett behov av Klokboken för seniorbostäder, för att det idag saknas en samlad plats med kunskaper i detta tema. Klokboken för seniorbostäder har kommit till som ett resultat av ett forsknings-och utvecklingsprojekt på Chalmers tekniska högskola och Göteborgsregionen – DIABAHS (Dialog Bygg Hållbart för Seniorer) . Projektet finansierades av Formas, CMB, Mistra Urban Futures, Göteborgs Stad och många fler aktörer (se DIABAHS).

- Purpose – The purpose of this study is to find out what knowledge and experience of occupational therapists, personal assistants and public health nurses/nurses in Sweden can contribute concerning the vulnerability of residents to injury in different residential care-settings. Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on a online survey. A total of 832 individuals responded to the survey. The data was analysed from a mixed-method approach, using descriptive statistics, correlations and textual-analysis. Findings –More than one in four representatives of these professions had witnessed accidents. The results show that bedrooms and bathrooms are the rooms in which accidents are most likely to occur in homes. Research limitations/implications – One limitation of the study is that the impact of educational initiatives on the different professions was not investigated, so it is not possible to ascertain what effect this may have had on risk identification and accident prevention measures in residential care-settings. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no prior study of these issues has been conducted. This study is deemed to have significant social benefit because of the steadily increasing need for care in residential settings. No other study has addressed the importance of the physical environment in this context. Collaborations involving researchers from various disciplines, professional organizations and public and private sector employers involved in personal assistance have contributed specific knowledge.

- Sammanfattningsvis kan man säga att dennakorta studie visar att en intressant utveckling ärpå gång i Göteborg vad gäller utvecklandet avtrygghetsboende för äldre. År 2010 visade studienVem ska värna om tillgängligheten? (Lindahl,Martini, Malmqvist 2010) att det i stort settsaknas incitament för att skapa bättre boendeför äldre. Ofta finns kunskaper om vad sombehöver åtgärdas, men ändå satsas inte mycketpå att förbättra det befintliga bostadsbeståndet. De faktorer i boendet som mest engagerar äldrehyresgäster är hyran, trivseln och tryggheten.Fysisk tillgänglighet engagerar först när mandrabbas av sjukdom eller liknande. Äldrehyresgäster vill inte vara till besvär och därför nåsinte fastighetsägaren av information om bristeri tillgänglighet eller användbarhet. Mycket merbehöver förbättras för att önskade effekter skauppnås i kommunen när det gäller boende förseniorer och förbättrad tillgänglighet. Det som nugörs inom bostadsföretag som Poseidon visar atten mycket positiv förändring är på gång.Denna studie pekar på några avframgångsfaktorerna när det gäller utvecklingav det befintliga bostadsbeståndet till att bättrepassa för äldre hyresgäster: Att man startarutvecklingen i stadsdelar eller bostadsområdendär goda fysiska och sociala förutsättningar finns,att bostadsföretag och äldreomsorgen samarbetar,att utvecklingsarbetet är förankrat ändå upp ibostadsföretagets ledning, inte minst, att manfinner en projektledare som har stort engagemangför att förbättra för äldre hyresgäster.

- Private homes for the elderly are becoming, more and more, the working environment for staff in homecare and home healthcare. The benefits of care in, or in the vicinity of, people’s homes are apparent: reduced personnel sick leave, patient concern, healthcare costs and ultimately improved health. For this combination of activities to work well, housing and residential areas are required to be adapted to the demands of care services. What happens to the housing of the elderly when apartments become working environments? And how is the situation experienced by the healthier spouse in the household? These questions are complex and require cooperation between several different professional skills. This chapter focuses on the role of the built environment in these new situations of caring. How can architects re-think new buildings? Experiences are presented partly from an ongoing study where observations are made in the real care situation in the homes of older people. In this project, researchers from different disciplines collaborated on observations, interviews and literature reviews. Experiences are also collected from ten years of commitment to a master’s studio education project dedicated to the design of housing for the elderly and making proposals for new long-term future solutions for healthcare at home.

- In many European countries, elderly persons will stay in their own homes as long as possible. This fact puts ordinary housing-areas under special constrains. The challenge of a rapidly increasing aging population calls for collaboration and new ways to organize and use built space. The aim of this project is to find, design and discuss solutions within built areas of housing, when homes also are workplaces. This project is in an early phase why main results not yet exist. Method in this qualitative research is use of multiple tactics: Interviews, Questionnaire survey, Observations and evaluations of authentic processes of changes as well as of Design-projects made by master-students.

- Residential Healthcare is a new, but relevant research-area with a background in the demographic situation with aging societies in most developed countries around the world. New challenges and possibilities occur when care and healthcare moves into private homes. In Sweden there is an increasing of not only home-care but also home-healthcare which will impact the layout of housing with new demands. This paper describes a recently started project with the aim to analyze, from a number of aspects, the empirical material of more than 60 different design-solutions of Housing for elderly, made by Master-students in design-project run for the last 7 years. The design-solutions are illustrating research-questions, which I, as the teacher, have stated in the course-program. Small but attractive and accessible flats for 1 and 2 persons are complemented with space for flexible use of healthcare, treatments of feet, massage, hairdresser etc and also for common activities. The need for such housing was identified a result of a recent investigation from the government of Sweden (SOU 2008:113). We have been working in existing context with real construction clients, planning to build such facilities and real sites. The focus is not only on the elderly but also on the staff in home-care and home-healthcare. What are their possibilities to perform a good work in ordinary private homes? What needs to be specifically considered in the design of new housing?The project will be using the actual design-solutions as empirical work-material, the architectural research technique Research by design. Complementing empirical materials will be the design of recently built facilities for Senior Housing in Sweden. Workshops, as a complementary method, with staff from homecare and home-healthcare will be implemented, catching the experiences from experts. Parameters for measuring the outcomes will be from the area of architectural qualities as well as from accessibility and usability in a broad perspective.
