  • Altered energy partitioning across terrestrial ecosystems in the European drought year 2018 : Energy partitioning in the drought 2018
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8436 .- 1471-2970. ; 375:1810
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drought and heat events, such as the 2018 European drought, interact with the exchange of energy between the land surface and the atmosphere, potentially affecting albedo, sensible and latent heat fluxes, as well as CO 2 exchange. Each of these quantities may aggravate or mitigate the drought, heat, their side effects on productivity, water scarcity and global warming. We used measurements of 56 eddy covariance sites across Europe to examine the response of fluxes to extreme drought prevailing most of the year 2018 and how the response differed across various ecosystem types (forests, grasslands, croplands and peatlands). Each component of the surface radiation and energy balance observed in 2018 was compared to available data per site during a reference period 2004-2017. Based on anomalies in precipitation and reference evapotranspiration, we classified 46 sites as drought affected. These received on average 9% more solar radiation and released 32% more sensible heat to the atmosphere compared to the mean of the reference period. In general, drought decreased net CO 2 uptake by 17.8%, but did not significantly change net evapotranspiration. The response of these fluxes differed characteristically between ecosystems; in particular, the general increase in the evaporative index was strongest in peatlands and weakest in croplands. This article is part of the theme issue 'Impacts of the 2018 severe drought and heatwave in Europe: from site to continental scale'.

  • ForestClim : Bioclimatic variables for microclimate temperatures of European forests
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 29:11, s. 2886-2892
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Microclimate research gained renewed interest over the last decade and its importance for many ecological processes is increasingly being recognized. Consequently, the call for high-resolution microclimatic temperature grids across broad spatial extents is becoming more pressing to improve ecological models. Here, we provide a new set of open-access bioclimatic variables for microclimate temperatures of European forests at 25 x 25 m2 resolution.

  • Temperature thresholds of ecosystem respiration at a global scale
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Ecology and Evolution. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-334X. ; 5:4, s. 487-494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ecosystem respiration is a major component of the global terrestrial carbon cycle and is strongly influenced by temperature. The global extent of the temperature–ecosystem respiration relationship, however, has not been fully explored. Here, we test linear and threshold models of ecosystem respiration across 210 globally distributed eddy covariance sites over an extensive temperature range. We find thresholds to the global temperature–ecosystem respiration relationship at high and low air temperatures and mid soil temperatures, which represent transitions in the temperature dependence and sensitivity of ecosystem respiration. Annual ecosystem respiration rates show a markedly reduced temperature dependence and sensitivity compared to half-hourly rates, and a single mid-temperature threshold for both air and soil temperature. Our study indicates a distinction in the influence of environmental factors, including temperature, on ecosystem respiration between latitudinal and climate gradients at short (half-hourly) and long (annual) timescales. Such climatological differences in the temperature sensitivity of ecosystem respiration have important consequences for the terrestrial net carbon sink under ongoing climate change.

  • Integration of High-Tc Superconductors with High-Q-Factor Oxide Mechanical Resonators
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - 1616-3028 .- 1616-301X. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Micro-mechanical resonators are building blocks of a variety of applications in basic science and consumer electronics. This device technology is mainly based on well-established and reproducible silicon-based fabrication processes with outstanding performances in term of mechanical Q-factor and sensitivity to external perturbations. Broadening the functionalities of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) by the integration of functional materials is a key step for both applied and fundamental science. However, combining functional materials with silicon-based devices is challenging. An alternative approach is directly fabricating MEMS based on compounds inherently showing non-trivial functional properties, such as transition metal oxides. Here, a full-oxide approach is reported, where a high- (Formula presented.) superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) is integrated with high Q-factor micro-bridge resonators made of single-crystal LaAlO3 (LAO) thin films. LAO resonators are tensile strained, with a stress of about 350 MPa, show a Q-factor above 200k, and have low roughness. YBCO overlayers are grown ex situ by pulsed laser deposition and YBCO/LAO bridges show zero resistance below 78 K and mechanical properties similar to those of bare LAO resonators. These results open new possibilities toward the development of advanced transducers, such as bolometers or magnetic field detectors, as well as experiments in solid state physics, material science, and quantum opto-mechanics.

  • Strain, Young’s modulus, and structural transition of EuTiO 3 thin films probed by micro-mechanical methods
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: APL Materials. - 2166-532X. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • EuTiO3 (ETO) is a well-known complex oxide mainly investigated for its magnetic properties and its incipient ferro-electricity. In this work, we demonstrate the realization of suspended micro-mechanical structures, such as cantilevers and micro-bridges, from 100 nm-thick single-crystal epitaxial ETO films deposited on top of SrTiO3(100) substrates. By combining profile analysis and resonance frequency measurements of these devices, we obtain the Young’s modulus, strain, and strain gradients of the ETO thin films. Moreover, we investigate the ETO anti-ferro-distortive transition by temperature-dependent characterizations, which show a non-monotonic and hysteretic mechanical response. The comparison between experimental and literature data allows us to weight the contribution from thermal expansion and softening to the tuning slope, while a full understanding of the origin of such a wide hysteresis is still missing. We also discuss the influence of oxygen vacancies on the reported mechanical properties by comparing stoichiometric and oxygen-deficient samples.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Conference, NMDC 2023. ; , s. 770-771
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the results of the OXiNEMS project (www.oxinems.eu) concerning the realization of a high-sensitivity magnetometer made by a magnetic nanomechanical resonator coupled to a nanopatterned superconducting thin film structure integrated with a superconducting loop. We discuss the basic working principle of the device, its first characterizations and the instrumentation we developed to measure the device performances in view of its application in the field of biomagnetism.
