  • Loess and geotourism potential of the Braničevo District (NE Serbia) : From overexploitation to paleoclimate interpretation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Open Geosciences. - 2391-5447. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of loess as a resource for paleoclimatic research is quite well established. In Serbia, a significant number of loess sequences have been preserved in old brickyards. The results of the previously conducted research indicate extremely valuable data that enable a better understanding of the mid- to late Pleistocene climatic evolution in this part of Europe, as well as human dispersal from Africa to Europe via the so-called Danubian migration corridor. The aim of this study is to evaluate the geotourism potentials of the loess profiles in Pożarevac (northeastern Serbia). The goal is to determine their geotourism potential for paleoclimate interpretation. The Modified Geoheritage Assessment Model method has identified exceptional geotourism potentials that can be implemented in the tourism market. Paleoclimatic data can serve as indicators for the development of scientific visitor centers for the promotion and popularization of paleoclimate science and museums, which will affirm sustainable socio-economic development through multidisciplinary interpretation. By combining geological, paleoclimatic, archaeological, biological, and other values that reveal natural and anthropogenic events from the distant past, it is possible to create a very competitive geotourism destination, whose sustainability can be passed on to future generations.

  • Aeolian dynamics at the northern edge of Deliblato (Banat) Sand Sea, Vojvodina, Serbia, at the time of the last deglaciation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Quaternary Research (United States). - 0033-5894.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Deliblato (Banat) Sand Sea, which is one of the largest areas of aeolian sand in Europe, is located near the Iron Gate, which marks the crossing of the Danube River through the biggest gorge of this river. Here, Danubian alluvium has served as the sand source for the Banat Sand Sea, which was formed primarily through southeasterly (Košava) winds. Utilizing a multi-proxy approach, the objective of this study is to gain a better understanding of the environmental dynamics of the Banat Sand Sea. To achieve this goal, we conducted an analysis of an archive representing an approximately 20-m-thick dune formation on the northern edge of this dune field. Using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, we calculated aeolian sedimentation rates and dune ages. Sand was deposited here approximately between 17 ka and 13 ka. Magnetic susceptibility, grain size, and colorimetric analyses were interpreted in terms of local paleoenvironmental conditions. Calculated sedimentation rates (SR) indicate intensive aeolian deposition during the study period that range from 483 cm/ka to 502 cm/ka. We compared our data with regional and other European archives, as well as with climatic variations recorded in the Greenland ice core North Greenland Ice Core Project (NGRIP).

  • Local Differentiation in the Loess Deposition as a Function of Dust Source : Key Study Novo Orahovo Loess Paleosol Sequence (Vojvodina, Serbia)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Quaternary. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-550X. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Typical patterns of the Late Pleistocene loess–paleosol units are preserved in the Novo Orahovo brickyard, Northern Serbia. Presented preliminary luminescence chronology supports the chronostratigraphic interpretations of global isotopic marine climate reconstructions. Magnetic susceptibility and sedimentological evidence exhibit general similarities with the marine oxygen-isotope stratigraphy. These records provide new insights into the dust accumulation regimes over the eastern side of the Bačka loess plateau and offer new paleoenvironmental information for the region. They represent an important step forward towards the establishment of a catena from the thin loess-like sediments of the Banat foothills in the east towards the thicker and seemingly more complete loess sections of the southeastern and central Carpathian Basin. Grain-size data from the loess record of Nova Orahovo explain the regional differentiation in dust deposition.

  • The relationship between the loess stratigraphy in the Vojvodina region of northern Serbia and the Saalian and Rissian Stage glaciations – a review
  • Ingår i: Boreas. - 0300-9483.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The regional loess stratigraphy in the Vojvodina region, in the southeastern Carpathian Basin, has often been successfully correlated to the global palaeoclimate. This is a quasi-continuous sedimentary record that provides detailed environmental reconstruction during the last four glacial/interglacial cycles. In this study, we present a standardized loess stratigraphy and illustrate how it correlates with the marine oxygen isotope and Chinese loess stratigraphical records. We argue that the loess stratigraphy in Vojvodina region is an important link in the integration of European terrestrial stratigraphical schemes and the deep-sea stratigraphical model. We highlight how the loess record can better illustrate terrestrial environmental change through multiple glacial cycles than other records, such as glacial records. The investigated loess record enables direct links to be made between the loess sediments and their glacial sources. This reveals evidence of glaciations during every glacial cycle of the Saalian Stage complex, equivalent to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 10, 8 and 6. Therefore, Serbian loess has the potential to provide a direct link between terrestrial glaciations and wider records of global climate change, which is an enigma for many other continental records. These loess records display a strong relationship with the intensity of European glaciations during different glacial cycles. Loess sedimentation rates are highest in the most intensive European glaciation of the Saalian complex (MIS 6) and much lower during the weaker ‘missing’ glaciations equivalent to MIS 8 and 10. A key observation from the Vojvodina loess is the gradual increase in interglacial aridity through the late Middle Pleistocene. The explanation for the progressively increasing aridity in the investigated region at this time is still unclear. However, this trend is consistent with the idea of the Saalian complex as representing a 400 ka mega glacial cycle modulated by shorter classic 100 ka glacial cycles.

  • Reconstructed Malacothermometer July Paleotemperatures from the Last Nine Glacials over the South-Eastern Carpathian Basin (Serbia)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Atmosphere. - 2073-4433. ; 14:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the compiled malacological record of the two most important loess–palaeosol sequences (LPS) in Serbia was used to reconstruct the Malacothermometer July Paleotemperature (MTJP) of the last nine glacials. The sieved loess samples yielded shells of 11 terrestrial gastropod species that were used to estimate the MTJP. Veliki Surduk (covering the last three glacial cycles) and Stari Slankamen (covering the last fourth to ninth glacial cycle) LPSs previously lacked the malacological investigations. After the sieving, a total of 66,871 shells were found, from which 48,459 shells were used for the estimation of the MTJP. Through the studied period, the reconstructed MTJP was ranging from 14.4 °C to 21.5 °C. The lowest temperature was recorded during the formation of the loess unit L5, equivalent to the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 12. The second-coldest summers were occurring during the MIS 16 glacial. Although the warmest glacial was L8 (MIS 20) according to MTJP, these July temperatures might be overestimated due to only two samples from the poorly preserved L8 unit. The malacological material derived from the loess units at Veliki Surduk and Stari Slankamen LPSs showed great potential for July temperature reconstruction, as the comparison with other regional records showed similar climate changes. Further work is necessary to validate the age scale of the oldest samples, and a higher resolution sampling could lead to more detailed July temperature fluctuations, as was shown for the youngest glacial in this study. Likewise, estimating the July temperature using different proxies (e.g., pollen) from the same LPSs could be used to confirm the observed climate trends.

  • Care of patients with inborn errors of immunity in thirty J Project countries between 2004 and 2021
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in immunology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-3224. ; 13, s. 1032358-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The J Project (JP) physician education and clinical research collaboration program was started in 2004 and includes by now 32 countries mostly in Eastern and Central Europe (ECE). Until the end of 2021, 344 inborn errors of immunity (IEI)-focused meetings were organized by the JP to raise awareness and facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of patients with IEI.ResultsIn this study, meeting profiles and major diagnostic and treatment parameters were studied. JP center leaders reported patients’ data from 30 countries representing a total population of 506 567 565. Two countries reported patients from JP centers (Konya, Turkey and Cairo University, Egypt). Diagnostic criteria were based on the 2020 update of classification by the IUIS Expert Committee on IEI. The number of JP meetings increased from 6 per year in 2004 and 2005 to 44 and 63 in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The cumulative number of meetings per country varied from 1 to 59 in various countries reflecting partly but not entirely the population of the respective countries. Altogether, 24,879 patients were reported giving an average prevalence of 4.9. Most of the patients had predominantly antibody deficiency (46,32%) followed by patients with combined immunodeficiencies (14.3%). The percentages of patients with bone marrow failure and phenocopies of IEI were less than 1 each. The number of patients was remarkably higher that those reported to the ESID Registry in 13 countries. Immunoglobulin (IgG) substitution was provided to 7,572 patients (5,693 intravenously) and 1,480 patients received hematopoietic stem cell therapy (HSCT). Searching for basic diagnostic parameters revealed the availability of immunochemistry and flow cytometry in 27 and 28 countries, respectively, and targeted gene sequencing and new generation sequencing was available in 21 and 18 countries. The number of IEI centers and experts in the field were 260 and 690, respectively. We found high correlation between the number of IEI centers and patients treated with intravenous IgG (IVIG) (correlation coefficient, cc, 0,916) and with those who were treated with HSCT (cc, 0,905). Similar correlation was found when the number of experts was compared with those treated with HSCT. However, the number of patients treated with subcutaneous Ig (SCIG) only slightly correlated with the number of experts (cc, 0,489) and no correlation was found between the number of centers and patients on SCIG (cc, 0,174).Conclusions1) this is the first study describing major diagnostic and treatment parameters of IEI care in countries of the JP; 2) the data suggest that the JP had tremendous impact on the development of IEI care in ECE; 3) our data help to define major future targets of JP activity in various countries; 4) we suggest that the number of IEI centers and IEI experts closely correlate to the most important treatment parameters; 5) we propose that specialist education among medical professionals plays pivotal role in increasing levels of diagnostics and adequate care of this vulnerable and still highly neglected patient population; 6) this study also provides the basis for further analysis of more specific aspects of IEI care including genetic diagnostics, disease specific prevalence, newborn screening and professional collaboration in JP countries.

  • A new reaction path for the C + NO reaction: dynamics on the 4A'' potential-energy surface.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical chemistry chemical physics : PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 10:30, s. 4400-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a new reaction path without significant barriers for the C + NO reaction, forming ground state N((4)S) and CO. Electronic structure (CASPT2) calculations have been performed for the two lowest (4)A'' states of the CNO system. The lowest of these states shows no significant barriers against reaction in the C + NO or O + CN channels. This surface has been fitted to an analytical function using a many-body expansion. Using this surface, and the previously published (2)A' and (2)A'' surfaces [Andersson et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2000, 2, 613; Andersson et al., Chem. Phys., 2000, 259, 99], we have performed quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations, obtaining rate coefficients for the C((3)P) + NO(X(2)Pi) --> CO(X(1)Sigma(+)) + N((4)S,(2)D) and C((3)P) + NO(X(2)Pi) --> O((3)P) + CN(X(2)Sigma(+)) reactions. We have also simulated the crossed molecular beam experiments of Naulin et al. [Chem. Phys., 1991, 153, 519] The inclusion of the (4)A'' surface in the QCT calculations gives excellent agreement with experiments. This is the first time an adiabatic pathway from C((3)P) + NO(X(2)Pi) to CO(X(1)Sigma(+))+N((4)S) has been reported.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Chemical Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0301-0104. ; 324:2-3, s. 507-514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electronic structure (CASPT2) calculations have been performed for the (2)Pi and (4)Sigma(-) states of the NCO system. To create the potential energy surfaces, the generalized discrete variable representation (GDVR) method has been used. Wave packet calculations have been performed for the collinear O + CN reaction on both surfaces. These are the first reported quantum dynamics calculations on this reaction. State-to-state reaction probabilities are presented. On the (2)Pi surface, which has an almost 6 eV deep well, we obtain structure in the reaction probabilities at low kinetic energies but at higher energies they are smooth. The (4)Sigma(-) surface is highly exoergic and vibrationally non-adiabatic dynamics is observed. The (4)Sigma(-) surface has an early barrier and as a result we find that translational energy more efficiently promotes the reaction than vibrational energy does. The wave packet results are compared with QCT results. Generally the agreement is good as would be expected but some notable differences are found, particularly for reaction out of the vibrational ground state. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: J. Phys. Chem. A. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1089-5639 .- 1520-5215. ; 113:52, s. 14824-14830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spin−orbit coupling between the two collinear 2Π and 4Σ− potential energy surfaces for the NCO system are calculated using the RASSI method with CASSCF wave functions as basis set. The GDVR method has been used to interpolate a spin−orbit coupling surface. Wave packet and quasi-classical trajectory surface hopping calculations have been performed and compared for both the O(3P) + CN(X2Σ+) → N(4S) + CO(X1Σ+) reaction and for electronically inelastic scattering in the N + CO channels. The O + CN nonadiabatic reaction probabilities are small. The wavepacket study gives a resonance structure. Also for the N + CO electronically inelastic scattering the wave packet calculations give a distinct resonance structure with peak transition probabilities up to around 10%, which is somewhat lower than the trajectory surface hopping results.

  • Ingår i: Gender-Competent Legal Education. - Cham : Springer. - 9783031143595 - 9783031143601 ; , s. 429-465
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The following chapter deals with the general and special part of criminal law from a gender perspective. It analyses, in particular, the provisions from the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, the Istanbul Convention, from 2011. The Istanbul Convention is the most comprehensive international legal instrument that outlines binding obligations to states to prevent and combat violence against women and girls. Furthermore, the Istanbul Convention contains several institutes and behaviours that have to be criminalised in the respective national jurisdictions, covering and combining dogmatics and criminal policy issues with a foundation substantially based on gender. The chapter also explores gender issues in a more general way, interpreting criminal law and its challenges towards gender equality. The special part raises questions regarding criminal law and its compatibility with the Istanbul Convention and national laws.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Living Reviews in Relativity. - : Springer. - 1433-8351 .- 2367-3613. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Euclid is a European Space Agency medium-class mission selected for launch in 2020 within the cosmic vision 2015–2025 program. The main goal of Euclid is to understand the origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe. Euclid will explore the expansion history of the universe and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and red-shifts of galaxies as well as the distribution of clusters of galaxies over a large fraction of the sky. Although the main driver for Euclid is the nature of dark energy, Euclid science covers a vast range of topics, from cosmology to galaxy evolution to planetary research. In this review we focus on cosmology and fundamental physics, with a strong emphasis on science beyond the current standard models. We discuss five broad topics: dark energy and modified gravity, dark matter, initial conditions, basic assumptions and questions of methodology in the data analysis. This review has been planned and carried out within Euclid’s Theory Working Group and is meant to provide a guide to the scientific themes that will underlie the activity of the group during the preparation of the Euclid mission.

  • Chocolate or Succulent Chocolate : the impact of sensory descriptions on choice
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Social Science. - : Center for Promoting Ideas. - 2219-1933 .- 2219-6021. ; 7:6, s. 213-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to test the impact of sensory descriptions on customer propensity to select among appetizers, main courses and desserts in restaurants. It is proposed that sensory descriptions lead to decreased customer propensity to select an appetizer, unchanged customer propensity to select a main dish, and increased customer propensity to select a dessert. A field experimental design was used to test the hypotheses on menus through Chi-square on a total of 1367 measures. The results show, in line with the hypotheses, that sensory descriptions have a statistically significant negative impact on propensity to select an appetizer; virtually no impact on the propensity to select a main course; and a positive but not statistically significant impact on the propensity to select a dessert. The results problematize the notion that sensory descriptions make customers choose a specific dish from a restaurant’s menu. The results are limited to the field setting in that original menus were used as controls. Managers may want to be cautious when deploying sensory descriptions on appetizers and more generous when deploying them on desserts.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1948-7185. ; 1:17, s. 2519-2523
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The internal energy distribution of ammonia formed in the dissociative recombination (DR) of NH4+ with electrons has been studied by an imaging technique at the ion storage ring CRYRING. The DR process resulted in the formation of NH3 + H (0.90 ± 0.01), with minor contributions from channels producing NH2 + H2 (0.05 ± 0.01) and NH2 + 2H (0.04 ± 0.02). The formed NH3 molecules were highly internally excited, with a mean rovibrational energy of 3.3 ± 0.4 eV, which corresponds to 70% of the energy released in the neutralization process. The internal energy distribution was semiquantitatively reproduced by ab initio direct dynamics simulations, and the calculations suggested that the NH3 molecules are highly vibrationally excited while rotational excitation is limited. The high internal excitation and the translational energy of NH3 and H will influence their subsequent reactivity, an aspect that should be taken into account when developing detailed models of the interstellar medium and ammonia-containing plasmas.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Formation of water/ice layers on graphite has been studied in the temperature range from 90 to 180 K by elastic helium scattering, light scattering, and molecular dynamics simulations. Combined helium- and light-scattering experiments show that an ice film that wets the graphite surface is formed at surface temperatures of 100-140 K, whereas three-dimensional ice structures are formed at 140-180 K. Desorption of adsorbed water molecules competes with water incorporation into the ice film, and the ice formation rate is strongly temperature dependent. At 150 K, ice-layer formation takes place at the same time scale as layer reconstruction, and its properties are sensitive to the water deposition rate. The experimental results are compared with kinetics models, and the Johnston-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov model is concluded to well describe the ice-layer formation kinetics in the whole temperature range. Molecular dynamics simulations of water-cluster formation on graphite at 90-180 K show that water molecules and small clusters are highly mobile on the surface, which rapidly results in the nucleation of large and less mobile clusters on the surface. Clusters formed at low temperature tend to have the most molecules in direct contact with the uppermost graphite layer, while multilayer cluster structures are preferred at high temperatures. The results are discussed and compared with earlier studies of water ice formation on solid surfaces.

    • Thermal rate coefficients for the reactions C(3P) + NO(X2Π) → CN(X2Σ+) + O(3P), C(3P) + NO(X2Π) → CO(X1Σ+) + N(2D), and O(3P) + CN(X2Σ+) → CO(X1Σ+) + N(2D) in the temperature range from 5 to 5000 K have been obtained using quasiclassical trajectory calculations. Results are reported for two ab initio potential energy surfaces corresponding to states of 2A‘ and 2A‘ ‘ symmetry. Good agreement between calculated and experimental rate coefficients are obtained for the C + NO reactions for all temperatures, whereas the rate coefficient for the O + CN reaction at room temperature is larger than that found experimentally. The dynamics is considerably different on the two potential energy surfaces with the 2A‘ ‘ giving rate coefficients in better agreement with experiments. The quality of the potential energy surfaces are discussed in the light of new electronic structure calculations including spin−orbit coupling.

    • Environmentally induced changes in the epigenome help individuals to quickly adapt to fluctuations in the conditions of their habitats. We explored those changes in Arabidopsis thaliana plants subjected to multiple biotic and abiotic stresses, and identified transposable element (TE) activation in plants infested with the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae. We performed a genome-wide analysis mRNA expression, small RNA accumulation and DNA methylationOur results demonstrate that aphid feeding induces loss of methylation of hundreds of loci, mainly TEs. This loss of methylation has the potential to regulate gene expression and we found evidence that it is involved in the control of plant immunity genes. Accordingly, mutant plants deficient in DNA and H3K9 methylation (kyp) showed increased resistance to M. persicae infestation.Collectively, our results show that changes in DNA methylation play a significant role in the regulation of the plant transcriptional response and induction of defense response against aphid feeding.

    • Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are renowned for their rich and varied bulk properties, while their single-layer variants have become one of the most prominent examples of two-dimensional materials beyond graphene. Their disparate ground states largely depend on transition metal d-electron-derived electronic states, on which the vast majority of attention has been concentrated to date. Here, we focus on the chalcogen-derived states. From density-functional theory calculations together with spin- and angle-resolved photoemission, we find that these generically host a co-existence of type-I and type-II three-dimensional bulk Dirac fermions as well as ladders of topological surface states and surface resonances. We demonstrate how these naturally arise within a single p-orbital manifold as a general consequence of a trigonal crystal field, and as such can be expected across a large number of compounds. Already, we demonstrate their existence in six separate TMDs, opening routes to tune, and ultimately exploit, their topological physics.

    • Background Anaphylaxis, which is rare, has been reported after COVID-19 vaccination, but its management is not standardized.Method Members of the European Network for Drug Allergy and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology interested in drug allergy participated in an online questionnaire on pre-vaccination screening and management of allergic reactions to COVID-19 vaccines, and literature was analysed. Results No death due to anaphylaxis to COVID-19 vaccines has been confirmed in scientific literature. Potential allergens, polyethylene glycol (PEG), polysorbate and tromethamine are excipients. The authors propose allergy evaluation of persons with the following histories: 1-anaphylaxis to injectable drug or vaccine containing PEG or derivatives; 2-anaphylaxis to oral/topical PEG containing products; 3-recurrent anaphylaxis of unknown cause; 4-suspected or confirmed allergy to any mRNA vaccine; and 5-confirmed allergy to PEG or derivatives. We recommend a prick-to-prick skin test with the left-over solution in the suspected vaccine vial to avoid waste. Prick test panel should include PEG 4000 or 3500, PEG 2000 and polysorbate 80. The value of in vitro test is arguable. Conclusions These recommendations will lead to a better knowledge of the management and mechanisms involved in anaphylaxis to COVID-19 vaccines and enable more people with history of allergy to be vaccinated.

Using statistical process control, we found different improvement trajectories following attention training in a group of relatively homogeneous patients early after acquired brain injury (ABI). ObjectiveTo examine the contribution of pre-injury factors and clinical characteristics to differences in outcome after early attention training. Materials and MethodsData collected in a clinical trial comparing systematic attention training (APT) with activity-based attention training (ABAT) early after brain injury were reanalyzed. ResultsStroke patients (p = 0.004) with unifocal (p = 0.002) and right hemisphere lesions (p = 0.045), and those with higher mental flexibility (TMT 4) (p = 0.048) benefitted most from APT training. Cognitive reserve (p = 0.030) was associated with CHANGE and APT as the sole pre-injury factor. For TBI patients, there was no statistical difference between the two treatments. ConclusionOur study identifies indiscernible factors predicting improvement after early attention training. APT is beneficial for patients with right-hemispheric stroke in an early recovery phase. Knowledge of prognostic factors, including the level of attention deficit, diagnosis, and injury characteristics, is vital to maximizing the efficiency of resource allocation and the effectiveness of rehabilitative interventions to enhance outcomes following stroke and TBI.

  • Pottery versus sediment : Optically stimulated luminescence dating of the Neolithic Vinca culture, Serbia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Quaternary International. - : Elsevier BV. - 1040-6182 .- 1873-4553. ; 429, s. 45-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was applied to the Neolithic Vinca culture's type-site, Vinca Belo-Brdo, to establish best protocols for routine luminescence dating of similar Holocene sites, critical in understanding Neolithic to Chalcolithic cultural development. Equivalent dose (De) values were investigated for sediment samples using 63-90 mm grains on large and small aliquots, and single-grain laser luminescence (SGLL), and for pottery samples using large aliquots of 4-11 mm grains. The effects of changing water content and the different techniques available to establish radionuclide concentration were explored for their impacts on dose rate (Dr) estimates. Ages for two pottery samples of 6.74 +/- 0.37 ka and 7.04 +/- 0.47 ka are in line with the existing AMS radiocarbon chronology for the site and are regarded as the best dates available. Sediment samples at Vinca show poor signal strength, and the uncertainty over past water content, in addition to the possibility of mixing and/or partial bleaching of the quartz, means that we do not recommend the use of sediment-derived ages at complex archaeological sites such as Vinca. OSL dating of fired pottery however, presents a powerful tool for generating independent chronologies at archaeological sites as well as providing additional constraints for Bayesian age models.

  • Ultrafast Triggering of Insulator-Metal Transition in Two-Dimensional VSe2
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 21:5, s. 1968-1975
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transition-metal dichalcogenide VSe2 exhibits an increased charge density wave transition temperature and an emerging insulating phase when thinned to a single layer. Here, we investigate the interplay of electronic and lattice degrees of freedom that underpin these phases in single-layer VSe2 using ultrafast pump-probe photoemission spectroscopy. In the insulating state, we observe a light-induced closure of the energy gap, which we disentangle from the ensuing hot carrier dynamics by fitting a model spectral function to the time-dependent photoemission intensity. This procedure leads to an estimated time scale of 480 fs for the closure of the gap, which suggests that the phase transition in single-layer VSe2 is driven by electron-lattice interactions rather than by Mott-like electronic effects. The ultrafast optical switching of these interactions in SL VSe2 demonstrates the potential for controlling phase transitions in 2D materials with light.

  • Comparison of classical and quantum dynamics for collinear cluster scattering
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7690 .- 0021-9606. ; 122:14, s. 144711 (1-9)
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The collinear dynamics of a cluster of four particles colliding with a fixed particle representing a surface is investigated using a four-dimensional wave packet approach. The properties of the system are chosen to resemble a water cluster interacting with graphite, but a deeper surface-particle potential is also considered causing significant dissociation of the cluster. Having four different product arrangement channels the system is quantum mechanically demanding but still manageable. The dynamical richness makes it a suitable benchmark system for evaluation of classical and quantum/classical schemes. The average energy transferred to the cluster and the three dissociation probabilities are presented as function of the initial state of the cluster. In addition to wave packet data, results obtained using quasiclassical as well as Wigner sampled classical trajectories are presented. The main conclusion is that classical mechanics can describe the dynamics of the system in a very satisfactory way. Including zero-point energy in the classical simulations is particularly important for a good description of dissociation but less important for energy transfer.

  • Investigation of quantum effects on vibrational excitation of CF3Br scattering from graphite
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Chemical Physics. - 0301-0104. ; 285:2-3, s. 233-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mixed quantum–classical molecular dynamics simulations of vibrational excitation of CF3Br in collisions with graphite have been carried out. The quantum problem is made numerically manageable by a reduced dimensionality treatment of the internal degrees of freedom including only the C–Br stretch and the umbrella motion. These two coordinates are treated quantum mechanically as a 2D wavepacket whereas the translational and rotational degrees of freedom and the surface atoms are treated classically. A 3D wavepacket scheme where the distance to the surface is included among the quantum degrees of freedom is also considered as well as purely classical trajectories. It is found that the total vibrational excitation is quite low. Excitation of the C–Br stretch dominates with only a very small fraction of the excitation energy going into the umbrella motion. The 2D wavepacket calculations and the classical trajectories (initiated without zero point energy) give nearly identical results for the total excitation but the 2D wavepacket model excites the umbrella motion to a lesser extent. The 3D wavepacket method shows a considerable dependence on the initial width of the wavepacket due to the underlying mean-field approximation. All methods show a linear increase in vibrational excitation with increasing surface temperature, in agreement with previous experimental results.

  • Euclid : cosmological forecasts from the void size function
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 667
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Euclid mission - with its spectroscopic galaxy survey covering a sky area over 15 000 deg(2) in the redshift range 0.9 < z < 1.8 - will provide a sample of tens of thousands of cosmic voids. This paper thoroughly explores for the first time the constraining power of the void size function on the properties of dark energy (DE) from a survey mock catalogue, the official Euclid Flagship simulation. We identified voids in the Flagship light-cone, which closely matches the features of the upcoming Euclid spectroscopic data set. We modelled the void size function considering a state-of-the art methodology: we relied on the volume-conserving (Vdn) model, a modification of the popular Sheth & van de Weygaert model for void number counts, extended by means of a linear function of the large-scale galaxy bias. We found an excellent agreement between model predictions and measured mock void number counts. We computed updated forecasts for the Euclid mission on DE from the void size function and provided reliable void number estimates to serve as a basis for further forecasts of cosmological applications using voids. We analysed two different cosmological models for DE: the first described by a constant DE equation of state parameter, w, and the second by a dynamic equation of state with coefficients w(0) and w(a). We forecast 1 sigma errors on w lower than 10% and we estimated an expected figure of merit (FoM) for the dynamical DE scenario FoM(w0,wa) = 17 when considering only the neutrino mass as additional free parameter of the model. The analysis is based on conservative assumptions to ensure full robustness, and is a pathfinder for future enhancements of the technique. Our results showcase the impressive constraining power of the void size function from the Euclid spectroscopic sample, both as a stand-alone probe, and to be combined with other Euclid cosmological probes.

  • Hyponatremia in Children and Adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome: A Survey Involving Seven Countries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of clinical medicine. - : MDPI AG. - 2077-0383. ; 10:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS), conditions that are associated with hyponatremia are common, such as excessive fluid intake (EFI), desmopressin use and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) caused by psychotropic medication. However, the prevalence of hyponatremia in PWS has rarely been reported. Our aim was to describe the prevalence and severity of hyponatremia in PWS. In October 2020, we performed a retrospective study based on the medical records of a large cohort of children and adults with PWS from seven countries. Among 1326 patients (68% adults), 34 (2.6%) had at least one episode of mild or moderate hyponatremia (125 ≤ Na < 135 mmol/L). The causes of non-severe hyponatremia were often multi-factorial, including psychotropic medication in 32%, EFI in 24% and hyperglycemia in 12%. No obvious cause was found in 29%. Seven (0.5%) adults experienced severe hyponatremia (Na < 125 mmol/L). Among these, five recovered completely, but two died. The causes of severe hyponatremia were desmopressin treatment for nocturnal enuresis (n = 2), EFI (n = 2), adrenal insufficiency (n = 1), diuretic treatment (n = 1) and unknown (n = 1). In conclusion, severe hyponatremia was very rare but potentially fatal in PWS. Desmopressin treatment for nocturnal enuresis should be avoided. Enquiring about EFI and monitoring serum sodium should be included in the routine follow-ups of patients with PWS.
