  • Mothers' Adaptation to a Late Preterm Infant When Breastfeeding
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Perinatal & Neonatal Nursing. - : Wolters Kluwer. - 0893-2190 .- 1550-5073. ; 34:1, s. 88-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to psychometrically test the Adaptation to the Late Preterm Infant when Breastfeeding Scale (ALPIBS) and also to test how a mother's self-efficacy predicts adaptation to a late preterm infant when breastfeeding. This study had a longitudinal and prospective design, and data collection was consecutive. Mothers (n = 105) with infants born between and weeks were recruited from a neonatal intensive care unit or a maternity unit. The ALPIBS was developed using exploratory factor analysis, and the association between breastfeeding self-efficacy and ALPIBS score was examined using linear regression analysis. The Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form instrument was used to measure self-efficacy in breastfeeding. A higher degree of self-efficacy was significantly associated with a higher degree of adaptation to the late preterm infant's breastfeeding behavior (P < .001). We identified 4 separate underlying factors measured by 11 items in the ALPIBS: (A) breastfeeding is a stressful event; (B) the infant should breastfeed as often as he or she wants; (C) a mother has to breastfeed to be a good mother; and (D) it is important to ensure control over the infant's feeding behavior. There is a link between self-efficacy and ALPIBS score, and self-efficacy is a modifiable factor that influences breastfeeding.

  • Mindfulness Mechanisms in Sports: Mediating Effects of Rumination and Emotion Regulation on Sport-Specific Coping
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mindfulness. - New York, NY : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1868-8527 .- 1868-8535. ; 8:5, s. 1354-1363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main objective of the project was to examine a proposed theoretical model of mindfulness mechanisms in sports. We conducted two studies (the first study using a cross-sectional design and the second a longitudinal design) to investigate if rumination and emotion regulation mediate the relation between dispositional mindfulness and sport-specific coping. Two hundred and forty-two young elite athletes, drawn from various sports, were recruited for the cross-sectional study. For the longitudinal study, 65 elite athletes were recruited. All analyses were performed using Bayesian statistics. The path analyses showed credible indirect effects of dispositional mindfulness on coping via rumination and emotion regulation in both the cross-sectional study and the longitudinal study. Additionally, the results in both studies showed credible direct effects of dispositional mindfulness on rumination and emotion regulation. Further, credible direct effects of emotion regulation as well as rumination on coping were also found in both studies. Our findings support the theoretical model, indicating that rumination and emotion regulation function as essential mechanisms in the relation between dispositional mindfulness and sport-specific coping skills. Increased dispositional mindfulness in competitive athletes (i.e. by practicing mindfulness) may lead to reductions in rumination, as well as an improved capacity to regulate negative emotions. By doing so, athletes may improve their sport-related coping skills, and thereby enhance athletic performance.

  • Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, and Psychometric Analysis of the Attitudes Towards Homelessness Inventory for Use in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing. - : Wiley. - 1545-102X .- 1741-6787. ; 18:1, s. 42-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Homelessness is an increasing problem worldwide, and the origins of homelessness in high-income countries are multifaceted. Due to stigma and discrimination, persons in homelessness delay seeking health care, resulting in avoidable illness and death. The Attitudes Towards Homelessness Inventory (ATHI) was developed to cover multiple dimensions of attitudes toward persons in homelessness and to detect changes in multiple segments of populations. It has, however, not previously been translated to Swedish.AIMS: The aim of the present study was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and psychometrically test the ATHI for use in a Swedish healthcare context.METHODS: The project used a traditional forward- and back-translation process in six stages: (1) two simultaneous translations by bilingual experts; (2) expert review committee synthesis; (3) blind back-translation; (4) expert review committee deliberations; (5) pre-testing with cognitive interviews including registered nurses (n = 5), nursing students (n = 5), and women in homelessness (n = 5); and (6) psychometric evaluations. The final ATHI questionnaire was answered by 228 registered nurses and nursing students in the year 2019.RESULTS: The translation process was systematically conducted and entailed discussions regarding semantic, idiomatic, experiential, and conceptual equivalence. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine if the collected data fitted the hypothesized four-factor structure of the ATHI. Overall, it was found that the model had an acceptable fit and that the Swedish version of ATHI may be used in a Swedish healthcare context.LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: The ATHI has been shown to be a psychometrically acceptable research instrument for use in a Swedish healthcare context. The systematic and rigorous process applied in this study, including experts with diverse competencies in translation proceedings and testing, improved the reliability and validity of the final Swedish version of the ATHI. The instrument may be used to investigate attitudes toward women in homelessness among nursing students and RNs in Sweden.

  • Chemogenetic modulation of cholinergic interneurons reveals their regulating role on the direct and indirect output pathways from the striatum
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Neurobiology of Disease. - : Elsevier BV. - 0969-9961. ; 109, s. 148-162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intricate balance between dopaminergic and cholinergic neurotransmission in the striatum has been thoroughly difficult to characterize. It was initially described as a seesaw with a competing function of dopamine versus acetylcholine. Recent technical advances however, have brought this view into question suggesting that the two systems work rather in concert with the cholinergic interneurons (ChIs) driving dopamine release. In this study, we have utilized two transgenic Cre-driver rat lines, a choline acetyl transferase ChAT-Cre transgenic rat and a novel double-transgenic tyrosine hydroxylase TH-Cre/ChAT-Cre rat to further elucidate the role of striatal ChIs in normal motor function and in Parkinson's disease. Here we show that selective and reversible activation of ChIs using chemogenetic (DREADD) receptors increases locomotor function in intact rats and potentiate the therapeutic effect of L-DOPA in the rats with lesions of the nigral dopamine system. However, the potentiation of the L-DOPA effect is accompanied by an aggravation of L-DOPA induced dyskinesias (LIDs). These LIDs appear to be driven primarily through the indirect striato-pallidal pathway since the same effect can be induced by the D2 agonist Quinpirole. Taken together, the results highlight the intricate regulation of balance between the two output pathways from the striatum orchestrated by the ChIs.

  • DREADD Modulation of Transplanted DA Neurons Reveals a Novel Parkinsonian Dyskinesia Mechanism Mediated by the Serotonin 5-HT6 Receptor
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Neuron. - : Elsevier BV. - 0896-6273. ; 90:5, s. 955-968
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transplantation of DA neurons is actively pursued as a restorative therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Pioneering clinical trials using transplants of fetal DA neuroblasts have given promising results, although a number of patients have developed graft-induced dyskinesias (GIDs), and the mechanism underlying this troublesome side effect is still unknown. Here we have used a new model where the activity of the transplanted DA neurons can be selectively modulated using a bimodal chemogenetic (DREADD) approach, allowing either enhancement or reduction of the therapeutic effect. We show that exclusive activation of a cAMP-linked (Gs-coupled) DREADD or serotonin 5-HT6 receptor, located on the grafted DA neurons, is sufficient to induce GIDs. These findings establish a mechanistic link between the 5-HT6 receptor, intracellular cAMP, and GIDs in transplanted PD patients. This effect is thought to be mediated through counteraction of the D2 autoreceptor feedback inhibition, resulting in a dysplastic DA release from the transplant.

  • Magnetic characterisation of magnetite and hematite from the Blötberget apatite-iron-oxide deposits (Bergslagen), south-central Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Canadian journal of earth sciences (Print). - : Canadian Science Publishing. - 0008-4077 .- 1480-3313. ; 56:9, s. 948-957
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rock magnetic measurements were carried out on drill core material and hand specimens from the Blötberget apatite-iron oxide deposit in the Bergslagen ore province, south-central Sweden, to characterise their magnetic properties. Measurements included several kinds of magnetic susceptibility and hysteresis parameters. Petrographic and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to independently identify and quantify the amount and type of magnetite and hematite. Two hematite-rich samples were studied with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to quantify the trace element chemistry in hematite and investigate the potential influence of trace elements on magnetic properties. Three aspects of this study are noteworthy. 1) Hematite-rich samples display strong anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, which is likely to affect the appearance and modelling of magnetic anomalies. 2) The magnitude-drop in susceptibility across Curie and Néel temperature transitions show significant correlation with the respective weight percent (wt%) of magnetite and hematite. Temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements can therefore be used to infer the amounts of both magnetite and hematite. 3) observations of a strongly depressed Morin transition at ca -60 to -70 C (200 to 210 K) are made during low-temperature susceptibility measurements. This anomalous Morin transition is most likely related to trace amounts of V and Ti that substitute for Fe in the hematite. When taken together, these magnetic observations improve the understanding of the magnetic anomaly signature of the Blötberget apatite-iron oxide deposits and may potentially be utilised in a broader context when assessing similar (Paleoproterozoic) apatite-iron oxide systems.

  • A novel ATR-FTIR method for functionalised surface characterisation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Surface and Interface Analysis. - : Wiley. - 0142-2421 .- 1096-9918. ; 40:3-4, s. 623-626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate a novel method to analyse ex situ prepared chips by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), which circumvents tedious functionalisation steps of internal reflection elements (IREs), and simultaneously allows for complementary measurements by other analytical techniques. This concept is proved by utilising immobilised metal affinity capture (IMAC) chips containing about 10 gm thick films of copolymers coated with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) groups. With this so-called 'upside-down' ATR-FTIR technique, each chemical modification step can be followed and optimised with respect to concentration, buffer, pH, ionic strength, and so on, and there are no limitations in variations or numbers of functionalised surfaces that can be generated. We have demonstrated the feasibility of this approach to determine the molecular structure of ligand bonded to immobilised polypeptide, directly observed in the raw ATR-FTIR spectrum. Peptide adsorption in a thick NTA-copolymer matrix yields a high peptide concentration as determined by the analysis of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Combined with the 'upside-down' ATR-FTIR approach which samples the outermost region of the exposed NTA-copolymer film, this generates well-resolved amide I and II absorption bands that reduce the necessity of using D2O based buffers, which otherwise is common in mid-IR spectroscopy of proteins. We believe that this new optical surface characterisation method has a great potential as a stand-alone or complementary analytical tool. We emphasise further that with this approach no chemical treatment of IREs is needed; the chips can be regenerated and reused, and analysed by complementary analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry.

  • Surface modification of SU-8 for metal/SU-8 adhesion using RF plasma treatment for application in thermopile detectors
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Express. - : Institute of Physics (IOP). - 2053-1591. ; 2:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on plasma treatment of SU-8 epoxy in order to enhance adhesive strength for metals. Its samples were fabricated on standard silicon wafers and treated with (O2 & Ar) RF plasma at a power of 25W at a low pressure of (3×10-3 torr) for different time spans (10 sec – 70 sec). The sample surfaces were characterized in terms of contact angle, surface (roughness and chemistry) and using a tape test. During the contact angle measurement, it was observed that the contact angle was reduced from 73° to 5° (almost wet) and 23° for (O2 & Ar) treated samples, respectively. The RMS surface roughness was significantly increased by 21.5% and 37.2% for (O2 & Ar) treatment, respectively. A pattern of metal squares was formed on the samples using photolithography for a tape test. An adhesive tape was applied to the samples and peeled off at 180o. The maximum adhesion results, more than 90%, were achieved for the O2-treated samples, whereas the Ar-treated samples showed no change. The XPS study shows the formation of new species in the O2-treated sample compared to the Ar-treated samples. The high adhesive results were due to the formation of hydrophilic groups and new O2 species in the O2-treated samples, which were absent in Ar-treated samples.

  • Tailored approaches grounded on immunogenetic features for refined prognostication in chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Haematologica. - : Ferrata Storti Foundation (Haematologica). - 1592-8721 .- 0390-6078. ; 104:2, s. 360-369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients with differential somatic hypermutation status of the immunoglobulin heavy variable genes, namely mutated or unmutated, display fundamental clinico-biological differences. Considering this, we assessed prognosis separately within mutated (M-CLL) and unmutated (U-CLL) CLL in 3015 patients, hypothesizing that the relative significance of relevant indicators may differ between these two categories. Within Binet A M-CLL patients, besides TP53 abnormalities, trisomy 12 and stereotyped subset #2 membership were equivalently associated with the shortest time-to-first-treatment and a treatment probability at five and ten years after diagnosis of 40% and 55%, respectively; the remaining cases exhibited 5-year and 10-year treatment probability of 12% and 25%, respectively. Within Binet A U-CLL patients, besides TP53 abnormalities, del(11q) and/or SF3B1 mutations were associated with the shortest time-to-first-treatment (5- and 10-year treatment probability: 78% and 98%, respectively); in the remaining cases, males had a significantly worse prognosis than females. In conclusion, the relative weight of indicators that can accurately risk stratify early-stage CLL patients differs depending on the somatic hypermutation status of the immunoglobulin heavy variable genes of each patient. This finding highlights the fact that compartmentalized approaches based on immunogenetic features are necessary to refine and tailor prognostication in CLL.

  • Acute reduction of cerebrospinal fluid volume prior to spinal anesthesia : implications for sensory block extent
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Minerva Anestesiol. - 1827-1596. ; 86:6, s. 636-644
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Multiple patient and clinical characteristics contribute to the variable outcome of spinal anesthesia (SPA). Acute reduction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume may alter the effect of SPA. The objective of the present study was to test if aspiration of 10 mL CSF immediately prior to SPA is associated with higher extent of sensory block. METHODS: Interventional cohort study. One hundred and two patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) were included. Fifty-one patients underwent sampling of 10 mL CSF prior to SPA (CSF aspiration group); 51 consecutive patients were used as controls. The primary outcome was the extent of sensory block to cold stimulus 20 minutes after injection of hyperbaric bupivacaine. Secondary outcome measures included duration of motor block and incidence of failed SPA. RESULTS: Acute reduction of CSF volume by 10 mL increased the extent of sensory anesthesia (mean thoracic level [T] 4.3+/-2.4 vs. 7.1+/-2.6, P<0.001). There were no significant between-group differences regarding motor block duration (P>/=0.30) or failed SPA (three of 51 [CSF aspiration group] vs. one of 51 [control group], P=0.31). In a retrospective data analysis, 10 of 13 patients in the CSF aspiration group who had previously received SPA had a higher sensory block after 10 mL CSF aspiration compared to the previous SPA (T4.1 [range, 0-11] vs. T8.2 [4-10], P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Acute reduction of CSF volume by 10 mL prior to SPA leads to a higher thoracic level of sensory block.

  • Differential expression of cerebrospinal fluid neuroinflammatory mediators depending on osteoarthritis pain phenotype
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Pain. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1872-6623 .- 0304-3959. ; 161:9, s. 2142-2154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neuroinflammation is implicated in the development and maintenance of persistent pain states, but there are limited data linking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory mediators with neurophysiological pain processes in humans. In a prospective observational study, CSF inflammatory mediators were compared between patients with osteoarthritis (OA) who were undergoing total hip arthroplasty due to disabling pain symptoms (n = 52) and pain-free comparison controls (n = 30). In OA patients only, detailed clinical examination and quantitative sensory testing were completed. Cerebrospinal fluid samples were analyzed for 10 proinflammatory mediators using Meso Scale Discovery platform. Compared to controls, OA patients had higher CSF levels of interleukin 8 (IL-8) (P = 0.002), intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (P = 0.007), and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (P = 0.006). Osteoarthritis patients with central sensitization possibly indicated by arm pressure pain detection threshold <250 kPa showed significantly higher CSF levels of Fms-related tyrosine kinase 1 (Flt-1) (P = 0.044) and interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10) (P = 0.024), as compared to subjects with PPDT above that threshold. In patients reporting pain numerical rating scale score >/=3/10 during peripheral venous cannulation, Flt-1 was elevated (P = 0.025), and in patients with punctate stimulus wind-up ratio >/=2, CSF monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 was higher (P = 0.011). Multiple logistic regression models showed that increased Flt-1 was associated with central sensitization, assessed by remote-site PPDT and peripheral venous cannulation pain, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 with temporal summation in the area of maximum pain. Multiple proinflammatory mediators measured in CSF are associated with persistent hip OA-related pain. Pain phenotype may be influenced by specific CSF neuroinflammatory profiles.

  • Diagnostic Value of Cerebrospinal Fluid Neurofilament Light Protein in Neurology : A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: JAMA Neurology. - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 2168-6149 .- 2168-6157. ; 76:9, s. 1035-1048
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Importance  Neurofilament light protein (NfL) is elevated in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a number of neurological conditions compared with healthy controls (HC) and is a candidate biomarker for neuroaxonal damage. The influence of age and sex is largely unknown, and levels across neurological disorders have not been compared systematically to date. Objectives  To assess the associations of age, sex, and diagnosis with NfL in CSF (cNfL) and to evaluate its potential in discriminating clinically similar conditions.Data Sources  PubMed was searched for studies published between January 1, 2006, and January 1, 2016, reporting cNfL levels (using the search terms neurofilament light and cerebrospinal fluid) in neurological or psychiatric conditions and/or in HC.Study Selection  Studies reporting NfL levels measured in lumbar CSF using a commercially available immunoassay, as well as age and sex.Data Extraction and Synthesis  Individual-level data were requested from study authors. Generalized linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the fixed effects of age, sex, and diagnosis on log-transformed NfL levels, with cohort of origin modeled as a random intercept.Main Outcome and Measure  The cNfL levels adjusted for age and sex across diagnoses. Results  Data were collected for 10 059 individuals (mean [SD] age, 59.7 [18.8] years; 54.1% female). Thirty-five diagnoses were identified, including inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (n = 2795), dementias and predementia stages (n = 4284), parkinsonian disorders (n = 984), and HC (n = 1332). The cNfL was elevated compared with HC in a majority of neurological conditions studied. Highest levels were observed in cognitively impaired HIV-positive individuals (iHIV), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Huntington disease. In 33.3% of diagnoses, including HC, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer disease (AD), and Parkinson disease (PD), cNfL was higher in men than women. The cNfL increased with age in HC and a majority of neurological conditions, although the association was strongest in HC. The cNfL overlapped in most clinically similar diagnoses except for FTD and iHIV, which segregated from other dementias, and PD, which segregated from atypical parkinsonian syndromes. Conclusions and Relevance  These data support the use of cNfL as a biomarker of neuroaxonal damage and indicate that age-specific and sex-specific (and in some cases disease-specific) reference values may be needed. The cNfL has potential to assist the differentiation of FTD from AD and PD from atypical parkinsonian syndromes.

  • Tumour staging of oesophageal cancer in the Swedish Cancer Registry : a nationwide validation study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - Stockholm : Karolinska Institutet, Dept of Molecular Medicine and Surgery. - 1651-226X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Tumour stage was introduced to the Swedish Cancer Registry in 2004, but this key variable for prognostic research has not yet been validated. We validated the tumour stage data in surgically treated oesophageal cancer patients. Material and Methods: Completeness and accuracy of tumour stage according to the TNM system (“Tumour Node Metastasis”) in the Cancer Registry were compared with a cohort study including comprehensive tumour stage data based on the pathological TNM of almost all patients operated for oesophageal cancer in 2006-2010 in Sweden. Results: Of the 397 patients with pathological TNM data in the comparison cohort, the Cancer Registry reported an overall TNM stage in 390 patients (98.2%), which was based on the pathological TNM of 104 patients (26.2%), the clinical TNM of 183 patients (46.1%), and the pathological or clinical TNM (undefined) of 110 patients (27.7%). The completeness for the separate T, N, and M components was 89.4%, 90.9%, and 85.1%, respectively. The concordance with tumour stage was 98.2%, while it was 51.1%, 70.5%, and 80.4% for the separate T, N, and M components, respectively. While the concordance with tumour stage was high for all TNM assessment groups (98.1-98.4%), the concordance of the T and N components was highest when using pathological TNM (82.7% and 95.2%, respectively), and the concordance of the M component was highest when using clinical TNM (88.5%). Conclusion: Although the overall completeness of tumour stage is high, the recording of pathological TNM stage and individual components could be improved within the Swedish Cancer Registry.

  • Ni–Ag Nanostructure-Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Enhanced Performance of Solar-Driven Hydrogen Production from Ethanol
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Energy Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2574-0962. ; 3:10, s. 10131-10138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar-driven splitting of alcohol utilizing photocatalysts is a promising route to obtain H2 and fine chemicals. Ni nanoparticles have shown great potential for light-driven splitting of alcohol, and their size, exposed facets, and electronic properties play key roles in the performance of photocatalysts. Therefore, purposefully modifying Ni is of great importance. In this report, Ni–Ag nanostructures were fabricated in situ on graphitic carbon nitride by a sequential photodeposition method. The solar-driven hydrogen production from ethanol was dramatically enhanced on the Ni–Ag nanostructure-modified graphitic carbon nitride compared with pure Ni nanoparticle-modified graphitic carbon nitride. It was found that the beneficial role of Ag is to disperse and stabilize small Ni nanoparticles and, importantly, expose catalytic sites that are less prone to accumulate ethanol decomposition products (acetate species), as proven by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy.

  • Determination of volatile organic compounds in water by attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy and diamond-like carbon coated silicon wafers
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Chemosensors. - : MDPI. - 2227-9040. ; 8:3, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most commonly detected contaminants in water. The occurrence is mainly in gasoline and other petroleum-based products, fumigants, paints and plastics. Releases into the environment and the widespread use have an impact on the ecosystem such as humans and animals due to their toxicity, mutagenicity, and carcinogenicity. VOCs may persist in groundwater and may enter drinking water supplies. In this paper, a diamond-like carbon (DLC)-coated silicon waveguide in combination with a polymer film (ethylene/propylene copolymer, E/P-co) for enrichment of analytes was investigated to determine its suitability for ATR-FTIR (attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopic detection of VOCs. The DLC film was fluorine-terminated enhancing the adhesion of the hydrophobic polymer to the waveguide surface. The analytes diffuse into the hydrophobic polymer whereas water is excluded from the emanating evanescent field. Therefore, direct detection in aqueous systems is enabled. Nine VOCs, i.e., ethylbenzene (EB), trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (TeCE), the xylene isomers (p-xylene, pXYL; m-xylene, mXYL; o-xylene, oXYL), naphthalene (NAPH), toluene (TOL), and benzene (BENZ), were evaluated simultaneously qualitatively and quantitatively showing the potential of DLC coatings revealing high sensitivities in the low ppb to ppm concentration range, i.e., 50 ppb for TeCE. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time of IR spectroscopic detection of VOCs in aqueous solutions using DLC-coated waveguides in combination with a hydrophobic polymer. By utilizing a DLC-coated waveguide, a versatile sensor for real-time monitoring in harsh environments such as effluents, leaking pipelines, and underground storage tanks is feasible due to response times within a few minutes.

    • Excited states of the nucleus Er-170 have been studied by Coulomb excitation using the GASP gamma-ray detector system at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. The ground-state band along with a low-lying K-pi = 0(+) band and gamma-vibrational band were populated during the experiment. Based on the measured gamma-ray yields, a set of interband and intraband matrix elements has been extracted using the Coulomb excitation code GOSIA. The resulting E2 matrix elements are compared to collective model predictions.

  • Evolution of complex symbiotic relationships in a morphologically derived family of lichen-forming fungi
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: New Phytologist. - : Wiley. - 0028-646X .- 1469-8137. ; 208:4, s. 1217-1226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We studied the evolutionary history of the Parmeliaceae (Lecanoromycetes, Ascomycota), one of the largest families of lichen-forming fungi with complex and variable morphologies, also including several lichenicolous fungi. We assembled a six-locus data set including nuclear, mitochondrial and low-copy protein-coding genes from 293 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The lichenicolous lifestyle originated independently three times in lichenized ancestors within Parmeliaceae, and a new generic name is introduced for one of these fungi. In all cases, the independent origins occurred c. 24 million yr ago. Further, we show that the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene were key periods when diversification of major lineages within Parmeliaceae occurred, with subsequent radiations occurring primarily during the Oligocene and Miocene. Our phylogenetic hypothesis supports the independent origin of lichenicolous fungi associated with climatic shifts at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. Moreover, diversification bursts at different times may be crucial factors driving the diversification of Parmeliaceae. Additionally, our study provides novel insight into evolutionary relationships in this large and diverse family of lichen-forming ascomycetes.

    • Infrequent and rare genetic variants in the human population vastly outnumber common ones. Although they may contribute significantly to the genetic basis of a disease, these seldom-encountered variants may also be miss-identified as pathogenic if no correct references are available. Somatic and germline TP53 variants are associated with multiple neoplastic diseases, and thus have come to serve as a paradigm for genetic analyses in this setting. We searched 14 independent, globally distributed datasets and recovered TP53 SNPs from 202,767 cancer-free individuals. In our analyses, 19 new missense TP53 SNPs, including five novel variants specific to the Asian population, were recurrently identified in multiple datasets. Using a combination of in silico, functional, structural, and genetic approaches, we showed that none of these variants displayed loss of function compared to the normal TP53 gene. In addition, classification using ACMG criteria suggested that they are all benign. Considered together, our data reveal that the TP53 coding region shows far more polymorphism than previously thought and present high ethnic diversity. They furthermore underline the importance of correctly assessing novel variants in all variant-calling pipelines associated with genetic diagnoses for cancer.

  • Human Atherosclerotic Plaque Progression Is Dependent on Apoptosis According to Bomb-Pulse 14C Dating
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: JACC: Basic to Translational Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 2452-302X. ; 6:9-10, s. 734-745
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Individuals with rapidly progressing atherosclerotic plaques are at higher risk of experiencing acute complications. Currently, we lack knowledge regarding factors in human plaque that cause rapid progression. Using the 14C bomb-pulse dating method, we assessed the physical age of atherosclerotic plaques and which biological processes were associated with rapidly progressing plaques. Interestingly, increased apoptosis was the main component associated with a young physical plaque age, reflecting rapid plaque progression. Our findings in combination with recent advances in imaging techniques could guide future diagnostic imaging strategies to identify rapidly progressing plaques or therapeutic targets, halting plaque progression.

  • Reduced Risk of Sinusoidal Obstruction Syndrome of the Liver after Busulfan-Cyclophosphamide Conditioning Prior to Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Translational Science. - : Wiley. - 1752-8054 .- 1752-8062. ; 13:2, s. 293-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to evaluate the incidence of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) of the liver and the clinical outcome after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) based on several modifications in our protocols. We retrospectively investigated 372 patients undergoing myeloablative conditioning with oral busulfan (Bu) and cyclophosphamide before allogeneic HSCT during 1990-2015. Patients' supportive care was changed in order to reduce the regimen-related toxicities. Norethisterone use was terminated in 1998, therapeutic drug monitoring of Bu was initiated in 2000, and the use of liver supportive drugs, such as ursodeoxycholic acid and N-acetyl-L-cysteine, were started in 2002 and 2009, respectively. In total, 26 patients (7.0%) developed SOS at a median of 19 days after transplantation. Of these 26 patients, 20 died at a median of 119 days after HSCT and 102 days after the diagnosis of SOS. The incidence of SOS decreased over time in accordance with the improvements in supportive care. The highest incidence of SOS was during 1995-1999 (16.2%) compared with 2.3% during 2010-2015. Overall survival for patients with SOS was 62%, 46%, and 27% at 100 days, 1 year, and 5 years after HSCT, respectively, compared with 92%, 77%, and 66% for those who did not develop SOS (P < 0.001). In conclusion, the incidence of SOS and related deaths were significantly decreased over the last years. Our institution pursues massive preventative and personalized measures for SOS. This strategy may also be applicable in other conditioning protocols in order to reduce the incidence of SOS and, hence, improve the clinical outcome.

  • Single-cell transcriptomics captures features of human midbrain development and dopamine neuron diversity in brain organoids
  • 2021

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three-dimensional brain organoids have emerged as a valuable model system for studies of human brain development and pathology. Here we establish a midbrain organoid culture system to study the developmental trajectory from pluripotent stem cells to mature dopamine neurons. Using single cell RNA sequencing, we identify the presence of three molecularly distinct subtypes of human dopamine neurons with high similarity to those in developing and adult human midbrain. However, despite significant advancements in the field, the use of brain organoids can be limited by issues of reproducibility and incomplete maturation which was also observed in this study. We therefore designed bioengineered ventral midbrain organoids supported by recombinant spider-silk microfibers functionalized with full-length human laminin. We show that silk organoids reproduce key molecular aspects of dopamine neurogenesis and reduce inter-organoid variability in terms of cell type composition and dopamine neuron formation.

    • Background Women experiencing homelessness have complex and multifaceted healthcare needs and yet they are an underserved population across healthcare services. Nurses are trained to perform an integral role in the provision of equitable healthcare and their attitudes towards homelessness may therefore influence the care that women experiencing homelessness receive. This study aimed to examine correlations between attitudes towards homelessness and caring behaviours, and to test if these correlations differed between the groups of women experiencing homelessness, registered nurses, and nursing students. Methods A cross-sectional design using convenience sampling was used to recruit women experiencing homelessness (n = 37), registered nurses (n = 90), and nursing students (n = 138) in Stockholm, Sweden between August 2019 and December 2020. The participants answered two questionnaires: the Attitudes Toward Homelessness Inventory and the Caring Behaviours Inventory-24. Correlations between ordinal variables were calculated using Spearman's rank correlation rho. Tests of equality between two independent correlations were performed using a Z-test applied to Fisher's z-transformed correlations. An advisory board of women with lived experience of homelessness supported the interpretation of the results. Results Weak, negative correlations were identified between the Attitudes Toward Homelessness Inventory and Caring Behaviours Inventory-24. The Attitudes Toward Homelessness Inventory mean total scores (SD) were 4.1 (0.6), 4.2 (0.6), 4.1 (0.5) points for the women experiencing homelessness, registered nurse, and nursing student groups, respectively, with the corresponding scores for the Caring Behaviours Inventory-24 being 4.1 (1.1), 5.2 (0.5), 4.8 (0.7) points, respectively. Conclusions To promote equitable health for women experiencing homelessness, healthcare providers and nurse educators should consider the role of stigmatising attitudes in relation to caring behaviours.

  • Developing the preterm breastfeeding attitudes instrument : A tool for describing attitudes to breastfeeding among health care professionals in neonatal intensive care
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Midwifery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0266-6138 .- 1532-3099. ; 94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop an instrument that measures health care professionals' (HCPs) attitudes to breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact in relation to the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative for neonatal intensive care.DESIGN: The study was part of a larger project aiming to revive the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding for both full-term and preterm infants. The study had a pre-test/post-test design using online questionnaires distributed by email before and after a training programme.SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 70 specialist registered nurses, registered nurses, assistant nurses and physicians working at a Swedish neonatal intensive care unit answered 55 breastfeeding attitudes questions online before the training. The Preterm Breastfeeding Attitudes Instrument (PreBAI) consists of twelve of these 55 items/questions, selected using exploratory factor analysis.MEASUREMENTS AND FINDINGS: Higher scores indicated more positive attitudes and the median total PreBAI score was 42 points (out of 48), on both the pre- and the post-test questionnaires, showing no significant difference. In the pre-test questionnaire, the majority of HCPs (84%) stated that they needed further breastfeeding training. They also stated that they perceived breastfeeding as very important, scoring a median of 10 (range 5-10) points on a 10-point scale. Three separate underlying dimensions were identified in the questionnaire, indicating different attitudes: Facilitating (five items), Regulating (four items), and Breastfeeding- and skin-to-skin contact-friendly (three items). A positive correlation was found between how many years the HCPs had worked in neonatal care, and their PreBAI score (rs = 0.383, p = 0.001). Those who had previously received extra breastfeeding education scored higher on the instrument.KEY CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Neonatal intensive care units need to increase their efforts to support breastfeeding. An important factor for mothers when establishing breastfeeding is support from well-trained professionals with a positive attitude to breastfeeding. The PreBAI could be a useful tool for identifying attitudes among HCPs before and after attending a breastfeeding training programme.

    • Objective: To explore swallowing function and risk factors associated with delayed recovery of swallowing in patients with COVID-19 post–invasive mechanical ventilation using the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS).Design: Longitudinal cohort study.Setting: Three secondary-level hospitals.Participants: Invasively ventilated patients (N=28) who were hospitalized with severe COVID-19 and referred to the hospitals’ speech and language pathology (SLP) departments after mechanical ventilation between March 5 and July 5, 2020 for an evaluation of swallowing function before commencing oral diet.Interventions: SLP assessment, advice, and therapy for dysphagia.Main Outcome Measures: Oral intake levels at baseline and hospital discharge according to the FOIS. Patients were stratified according to FOIS (1-5, dysphagia; 6-7, functional oral intake). Data regarding comorbidities, frailty, intubation and tracheostomy, proning, and SLP evaluation were collected. Results: Dysphagia was found in 71% of the patients at baseline (79% men; age, 61±12y; body mass index, 30±8 kg/m2). The median FOIS score at baseline was 2 (interquartile range [IQR], 1) vs 5 (IQR, 2.5) at hospital discharge. Patients with dysphagia were older (64±8.5y vs 53±16y; P=.019), had a higher incidence of hypertension (70% vs 12%; P=.006), and were ventilated invasively longer (16±7d vs 10±2d; P=.017) or had a tracheostomy (9±9d vs 1±2d; P=.03) longer. A negative association was found between swallowing dysfunction at bedside and days hospitalized (r=–0.471, P=.01), and number of days in the intensive care unit (ICU) (r=–0.48, P=.01).Conclusion: Dysphagia is prevalent in COVID-19 patients after invasive mechanical ventilation and is associated with number of days in hospital and number of days in the ICU. Swallowing function and tolerance of oral diet improved at discharge (P<.001).

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Considerable progress has been made in generating fully functional and transplantable dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Before these cells can be used for cell replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD), it is important to verify their functional properties and efficacy in animal models. Here we provide a comprehensive preclinical assessment of hESC-derived midbrain dopamine neurons in a rat model of PD. We show long-term survival and functionality using clinically relevant MRI and PET imaging techniques and demonstrate efficacy in restoration of motor function with a potency comparable to that seen with human fetal dopamine neurons. Furthermore, we show that hESC-derived dopamine neurons can project sufficiently long distances for use in humans, fully regenerate midbrain-to-forebrain projections, and innervate correct target structures. This provides strong preclinical support for clinical translation of hESC-derived dopamine neurons using approaches similar to those established with fetal cells for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

  • Early skin-to-skin contact between healthy late preterm infants and their parents : an observational cohort study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PeerJ. - : PeerJ. - 2167-8359. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundSkin-to-skin contact (SSC) is an important factor to consider in the care of late preterm infants (born between 34 0/7 and 36 6/7 completed weeks of gestation). The literature suggests that SSC between preterm infants and their mothers facilitates breastfeeding. However, more studies are needed to explore potential dose-response effects between SSC and breastfeeding as well as studies that explicitly investigate SSC by fathers among late preterm infants. The aim was to investigate the duration of healthy late preterm infants’ SSC with the mother and father, respectively, during the first 48 h after birth and the associations with breastfeeding (exclusive/partial at discharged), clinical and demographic variables.MethodsThis was an observational cohort study in which parents to healthy late preterm infants, born between 34 5/7 and 36 6/7 completed weeks of gestation, recorded duration of SSC provided by mother and father, respectively. Demographic and clinical variables were retrieved from the medical records and were used as predictors. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to assess the association between the predictors and the outcome, SSC (hours), separately for mothers and fathers.ResultsThe mean (standard deviation [SD]) time per day spent with SSC with mothers (n = 64) and fathers (n = 64), was 14.7 (5.6) and 4.4 (3.3) hours during the first day (24 h) after birth and 9.2 (7.1) and 3.1 (3.3) hours during the second day (24 h), respectively. Regarding SSC with mothers, no variable was significantly associated with SSC during the first day, while the mean (95% confidence interval [CI]) time of SSC during the second day was 6.9 (1.4–12.4) hours shorter for each additional kg of birthweight (p = 0.014). Concerning SSC with fathers, the mean (95% CI) time of SSC during the first day was 2.1 (0.4–3.7) hours longer for infants born at night (p = 0.015), 1.7 (0.1–3.2) hours longer for boys (p = 0.033), 3.2 (1.2–5.2) hours longer for infants born by caesarean section (p = 0.003), and 1.6 (0.1–3.1) hours longer for infants exclusively breastfed at discharge (p = 0.040). During the second day, the mean (95% CI) time of SSC with fathers was 3.0 (0.6–5.4) hours shorter for each additional kg of birthweight (p = 0.014), 2.0 (0.5–3.6) hours longer for infants born during night-time (p = 0.011), 2.9 (1.4–4.4) hours longer if the mother was primipara (p < 0.001), and 1.9 (0.3–3.5) hours shorter if supplementary artificial milk feeds were given. None of the other predictors, i.e., mother’s age, gestational age, or induction of labor were significantly associated with infants’ SSC with mothers or fathers during any of the first two days after birth.ConclusionFuture studies are warranted that investigate duration of SSC between late preterm infants and their parents separately and the associations with breastfeeding and other variables of clinical importance.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hazardous Materials. - : Elsevier. - 0304-3894 .- 1873-3336. ; 359, s. 482-490
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two water-based methods were used to produce TiO2/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites with 1 and 2 wt.% GO. Both procedures exclude the use of organometallic precursors, as well as the high-pressure and high-temperature treatments, which facilitate pure and energy efficient synthesis amenable for larger scale synthesis. Nanocomposites with narrow (< 10 nm) and long spindle-like (< 100 nm) TiO2 nanoparticles supported on GO flakes were obtained (TiO2/GO), and their properties for reactive destruction of the organophosphorus simile chemical warfare agent (CWA) dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) were investigated by in situ DRIFTS spectroscopy. Both synthesis procedures yielded highly reactive nanocomposites with markedly different properties compared to similarly prepared pure TiO2 nanoparticles. GO also induced morphology and texture changes, which were observed to have a significant impact on the adsorption and reactivity of the nano composites, and which were strongly related to synthesis procedure. In particular, the reduction state of GO, as measured by Raman spectroscopy, was observed to play a major role for the reactivity of the TiO2/GO nano composites.

  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Photochemistry and Photobiology. - : Wiley. - 0031-8655 .- 1751-1097. ; 91:1, s. 48-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photocatalytic properties of bismuth-modified titania were studied by photobleaching of two aqueous azo dyes solutions (Reactive Black 5 and Acid Orange 7), and by photoinduced decomposition (PID) of acetaldehyde using in situ FTIR spectroscopy. Low bismuth doping concentrations up to 3 at.% is shown to lead to an increased photobleaching rate of both azo dyes solutions. Too high Bi dopant concentrations lead to less developed crystallite nanoparticles and exhibit weaker adsorption capacity. Bismuth doping altered the adsorption kinetics of acetaldehyde resulting in different surface products, and a modified photocatalytic reaction pathway was inferred.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 49:9, s. 3560-3571
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An environmentally benign synthesis method was used to prepare a nearly uniform dispersion of TiO2 nanoparticles modified by bismuth for photocatalytic purposes. The role of bismuth in the catalyst structure was evaluated using numerous methods such as XRPD, HTXRPD, TEM and HRTEM, and XPS, as well as Raman, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The bismuth doping significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of azo dye RB5 discoloration due to the formation of surface Bi3+ species and the abundant hydroxylation of the catalyst surface. The great advantage of this procedure lies in the low temperature preparation under ambient pressure without use of the titanium organometallic precursors. Therefore, this developed synthesis procedure could be easily adapted to the industrial scale.

  • Ingår i: Catalysis Science & Technology. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2044-4753 .- 2044-4761. ; 9:8, s. 1816-1824
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar light-induced photodecomposition of organophosphorus warfare agent simulant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) on the surfaces of TiO2/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites was studied by in situ DRIFT spectroscopy. Nanocomposites containing 1 and 2 wt% GO, respectively, were prepared by two different aqueous methods. All nanocomposites were shown to effectively adsorb and partly dissociate DMMP as shown by the formation of surface coordinated methoxy groups. Solar light illumination induced rapid decomposition of the adsorbed species to yield various ionic and surface coordinated formate and carbonate species as the main intermediate products. Both the kinetics of adsorbed species decomposition and the formation of various intermediates were strongly affected by the presence of GO, as compared to pure TiO2 nanoparticles. The two synthesis routes yielded nanocomposites with different degrees of reduction of GO that correlated with their reactivity towards DMMP adsorption and photodegradation. Upon illumination, rapid depletion of water was observed on the TiO2/GO nanocomposites and was attributed to a water splitting reaction, which competed with the DMMP photo-oxidation reaction.

  • Reactive adsorption and photodegradation of soman and dimethyl methylphosphonate on TiO2/ nanodiamond composites
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Catalysis B. - : Elsevier. - 0926-3373 .- 1873-3883. ; 259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis and characterization of TiO2/Nanodiamond (ND) nanocomposites for rapid decontamination of chemical warfare agents (CWA) and toxic industrial compounds prepared by a simple water-based, low-temperature method using urea as a homogeneous precipitating agent. The excellent water-compatibility of NDs promoted their good dispersion within the TiO2 matrix resulting in intergrown TiO2/ND nanostructures. NDs with an abundance of oxygen-containing surface moieties increased the porosity of the composites resulting in their three times more efficient spontaneous degradation of the CWA soman in solution compared to pure TiO2. In situ DRIFT spectroscopy revealed the enhanced reactive adsorption and solar light photodecomposition of dimethyl methyl phosphonate vapor on TiO2/ND. The charge transfer across TiO2/ND interfaces that hinder recombination of photo-excited electron-hole pairs was inferred from surface potential measurements. The results indicate that well-dispersed NDs forming heterojunctions together with their high porosity contribute to the reactive properties of the nanocomposites.

  • Simulation of IRRAS Spectra for Molecules on Oxide Surfaces : CO on TiO2(110)
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 119:10, s. 5403-5411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore a method that cart sirriulate infrared refiection absotption spectroscopy (IRRAS) spectra for molecules adsjorlied on semiconductor surfaces. The method rakes it possible to directly correlate experimental spectra with possible adsorbate structures. Our example in thiS paper is CO adsoihed on rutile TiO2(110). We present simulated IRRAS spectra for coverages in the range from 0.125 to 1.5 Monolayer (ML) An explanation is provided. for the apparent inconsistency in the literature concerning the tilting geometry of 1 ML CO on this surface. We find that a tilted structure (which is also the lowest-energy configuration) generates IRRAS spectra in excellent agreement with the experimental spectra. Furthermore, we predict the adsorption structure for 1.5 ML CO coverage over TiO2 (110), which consists of very weakly bound CO molecules on top of the monolayer. In all cases, our simulation method) which is based On density functioual theory (PFT) vibrational calculations, produces s- and p-polarized IRRAS spectra in excellent agreement with the experimental spectra.

  • Synergistic TiO2/VO2 Window Coating with Thermochromism, Enhanced Luminous Transmittance, and Photocatalytic Activity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Joule. - : Elsevier. - 2542-4351. ; 3:10, s. 2457-2471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern buildings tend to be ‘‘energy guzzlers’’ and have indoor environments with unhealthy air. Glazing with TiO2/VO2 bilayer coatings (1) exhibits enhanced photocatalytic air purification compared with single-layer TiO2 due to heating from the underlying infrared-absorbing VO2 film, (2) is thermochromic thanks to the VO2 and admits less solar energy inflow when there is a cooling demand, and (3) has significantly improved luminous transmittance as a result of antireflection due to TiO2. These coatings were deposited by reactive DC magnetron sputtering onto heated glass; they were nanocrystalline, and the anatase phase prevailed in TiO2. The VO2 coatings showed well-developed thermochromism. The photocatalytic degradation rate of stearic acid was almost doubled for the TiO2/VO2 bilayer film compared with that for single-layer TiO2. Our results demonstrate an important, and hitherto unexplored, synergy between photocatalysis, thermochromism, and high luminous transmittance which exploits spectral-selective material properties for solar illumination.

  • A Home-Based Weight Lifting Program for Patients with Arm Lymphedema Following Breast Cancer Treatment: A Pilot and Feasibility Study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Lymphology. - 0024-7766. ; 47:2, s. 51-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well documented that resistance exercise can be performed by patients with breast cancer-related arm lymphedema. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a 12-week self-administered weight lifting program for arm and shoulder, and its influence on arm lymphedema status, upper extremity muscle strength, and disability. Twenty-three patients with breast cancer-related arm lymphedema performed the program 3 times/week. The weight resistance levels were individually adjusted for shoulder flexion and adduction, and elbow extension and flexion corresponding to a repetition range of 8-12 repetition maximum. A log book was used to evaluate adherence to the program, wearing of compression sleeve and perceived exertion. Measurements were performed before a 2-week control period without intervention, and before and after intervention, and with arm volume measurements every fortnight to check for adverse events. Results revealed no significant changes during the control period. Adherence to the intervention program was excellent, and two adverse events were registered during the first weeks. After intervention, an increase of shoulder and arm strength (measured by an isometric muscle strength device) was found in all exercises (p=0.001-0.003). A reduction of excess volume was shown, in ml (p=0.03) and percentage (p=0.005), measured by water displacement method. A tendency towards reduction (p=0.07) of fat tissue in the upper arm (n=10) in both arms was found measured by MRI. In this pilot study, we concluded that a home-based weight-lifting program performed by patients with breast cancer-related arm lymphedema is feasible and safe providing that the program includes regular follow-up for safety.

  • The Importance of Oxygen Vacancies in Nanocrystalline WO3−x ThinFilms Prepared by DC Magnetron Sputtering for Achieving High Photoelectrochemical Efficiency
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 121:13, s. 7412-7420
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photoelectrochemical properties of tungsten oxide thinfilms with different stoichiometry (WO3−x) and thickness were investigated. The films were sputtered in O2/Ar gas (ratio 0.43) on glass substrates coatedwith fluorine-doped tin dioxide at two sputter pressures, Ptot = 10 and 30mTorr, yielding O/W ratios of the films, averaged over three samples, of 2.995and 2.999 (x ∼ 0.005 and x ∼ 0.001), respectively. The films were characterizedby X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and spectrophotometry. The 10 mTorr samples showed large absorption in the near-infrared (NIR)range, whereas the 30 mTorr samples had a small absorption in this region. Theconcentration of oxygen vacancy band gap states was estimated from cyclicvoltammetry and was found to correlate with the optical absorption in the NIRregion. The incident photon to current efficiency for illumination from theelectrolyte side (IPCEEE) and substrate electrode side (IPCESE) showed higherefficiency for the more stoichiometric films, indicating that oxygen vacancies in the band gap act as recombination centers.Surprisingly high values of IPCEEE and IPCESE were found, and it was concluded that efficient charge separation and transporttake place almost throughout the entire film even for film electrodes as thick as 2 μm. Analysis of the spectral distribution of thephotoresponse (action spectra) using an extended Gärtner−Butler model to calculate the IPCE for front-side and back-sideillumination was performed and showed that the diffusion length is large, of the order of the depletion layer thickness.

  • Mathematics and physics at upper secondary school : an analysis of two lectures
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainable mathematics education in a digitalized world. - Göteborg : Nationellt centrum för matematikutbildning (NCM). ; , s. 264-264
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • A physics lecture and a mathematics lecture, by the same teacher and partly the same students, were studied at upper secondary school. Both lectures covered ordinary differential equations. The main aim of the present paper was to investigate the teacher’s different and similar ways to handle related mathematical content in the two school subjects. The findings show a structural use of mathematics with an analytical approach in mathematics and an applied approach in relation to formulas in physics. This study is part of a larger study about mathematics in physics education funded by the Swedish research council.
