  • Holocaust education and the Palestinian cause: young Palestinian people in Sweden, and their perceptions of Holocaust education
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Intercultural Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1467-5986 .- 1469-8439. ; 32:1, s. 17-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper investigates the experiences, perceptions and responses of immigrants with a Palestinian background in relation to learning about the Holocaust and the Palestinian cause in Swedish schools and visiting Holocaust sites. Data were collected from 50 immigrant students using audio-recorded and open-structured interviews. The results indicate that most informants had learned about the Holocaust in various classes, through readings, discussions and assignments, but very little about the Palestinian cause in textbooks or in school activities. The majority of informants were never asked to take part in Holocaust site visits, but if they were to be asked, 84% were willing make such visits. The majority of informants expressed sympathy with Holocaust victims, but they were not satisfied, as they felt there was too much focus on the Holocaust and too little on the Palestinian cause. This lived experience of imbalance between the two subjects resulted in reluctant attitudes towards Holocaust education among the Palestinian pupils, but this should not mainly be understood as a result of anti-Semitic sentiments among them. The results indicate that Holocaust education in Swedish schools among youngsters with a Palestinian background can hardly be treated separately from the question of the Israeli and Palestinian conflict.

  • Grain Alignment in the Circumstellar Shell of IRC+10 degrees 216
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 931:2, s. 80-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dust-induced polarization in the interstellar medium (ISM) is due to asymmetric grains aligned with an external reference direction, usually the magnetic field. For both the leading alignment theories, the alignment of the grain's angular momentum with one of its principal axes and the coupling with the magnetic field requires the grain to be paramagnetic. Of the two main components of interstellar dust, silicates are paramagnetic, while carbon dust is diamagnetic. Hence, carbon grains are not expected to align in the ISM. To probe the physics of carbon grain alignment, we have acquired Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy/Higch-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera-plus far-infrared photometry and polarimetry of the carbon-rich circumstellar envelope (CSE) of the asymptotic giant branch star IRC+10 degrees 216. The dust in such CSEs are fully carbonaceous and thus provide unique laboratories for probing carbon grain alignment. We find a centrosymmetric, radial, polarization pattern, where the polarization fraction is well correlated with the dust temperature. Together with estimates of a low fractional polarization from optical polarization of background stars, we interpret these results to be due to a second-order, direct radiative external alignment of grains without internal alignment. Our results indicate that (pure) carbon dust does not contribute significantly to the observed ISM polarization, consistent with the nondetection of polarization in the 3.4 mu m feature due to aliphatic CH bonds on the grain surface.

  • From subcultures to common culture : Bodybuilders, skinheads and the normalization of the marginal
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Youth Research Symposium (NYRIS), Youth Moves. Voices, Spaces, Subjectivities. Trollhättan, Sweden, 15-17 june, 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using bodybuilding and skinheads/neo-Nazis as two rather diverse examples of subcultures, this study is a theoretical exploration of our understanding of the concept of subculture and common culture. The aim is to explore how the concept of subculture can be used in relation to processes of normalization and marginalisation. The focus is on the historical, symbolic and biographical relation between the subculture and the subcultural response, and socio-political transformations in society and culture. We are interested in understanding the processes in which for example bodybuilding has moved back and forth between a subcultural position and more common fitness culture, over time. As a parallel to this, we are also interested in how subcultures centred on skinheads, neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists influence and are connected to more general political transformations and opinions in contemporary society, blurring the distinction between subculture and common culture. The results indicate a complex relation between subcultures and the mainstreaming of certain values, opinions and practices. Deviance is sometimes, over time, renegotiated within common culture, turned into normality , and whereas extreme parts and contents of subcultures may be toned down in this process, core points and values may be extracted and generalized. Bodybuilding is for example transformed into fitness, but the core values of hard bodies, muscle training, health and asceticism are highly present in fitness culture, as well as in more common and dominant socio-cultural patterns. In a similar vein, the core values and sentiments in skinhead and right-wing subcultures xenophobia and nationalism are today becoming a part of the political culture in many European countries.

  • Effects of melagatran, a novel direct thrombin inhibitor, during experimental septic shock
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs. - : Informa Healthcare. - 1354-3784 .- 1744-7658. ; 9:5, s. 1129-1137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sepsis and endotoxaemia initiate the generation of thrombin, which is responsible for the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, platelet aggregation and acts as an inflammatory mediator affecting numerous types of cells, including myocardial, smooth muscle and endothelial cells. Human Gram-negative septic shock, frequently seen in intensive care units, is a condition with high mortality. This condition can be replicated in the endotoxaemic pig. As many of the toxic effects of sepsis are due to thrombin generation, it was of interest to study, using this porcine experimental septic shock model, whether inhibition of thrombin could alleviate the effects of endotoxaemia. For this purpose melagatran, a direct synthetic thrombin inhibitor with a molecular weight of 429 Da, was employed. Melagatran does not significantly interact with any other enzymes in the coagulation cascade or fibrinolytic enzymes aside from thrombin. Furthermore, melagatran does not require endogenous co-factors such as antithrombin or heparin co-Factor II for its antithrombin effect, which is important, as these inhibitors are often consumed in septic patients. We have shown that melagatran exerts a beneficial effect on renal function, as evaluated by plasma creatinine and urinary output, during experimental septic shock. These effects were most pronounced during the later phase of the experimental period, after the infusion of melagatran had been discontinued. Prevention of intrarenal coagulation may be attributable to this finding. In addition, melagatran had beneficial effects on systemic haemodynamics (left ventricular stroke work index, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and systemic vascular resistance index) in endotoxaemic pigs. This result may be explained by the ability of melagatran to inhibit thrombin, thereby counteracting thrombin's cellular effects. Thus, it can be seen, using this experimental model of septic shock, that melagatran may help to alleviate some of the damaging effects of endotoxaemia, although more research is required to test this further.

    • OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of amyloid positivity, defined by positron emission tomography (PET)/cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and/or neuropathological examination, in primary progressive aphasia (PPA) variants. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis with individual participant data from 1,251 patients diagnosed with PPA (including logopenic [lvPPA, n = 443], nonfluent [nfvPPA, n = 333], semantic [svPPA, n = 401], and mixed/unclassifiable [n = 74] variants of PPA) from 36 centers, with a measure of amyloid-β pathology (CSF [n = 600], PET [n = 366], and/or autopsy [n = 378]) available. The estimated prevalence of amyloid positivity according to PPA variant, age, and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4 status was determined using generalized estimating equation models. RESULTS: Amyloid-β positivity was more prevalent in lvPPA (86%) than in nfvPPA (20%) or svPPA (16%; p

  • Levels of Interaction in Supply Chain Relations
  • 2007
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To be able to retain the manufacturing industry durably, in Europe in general and in Sweden in specific, manufacturing companies have to be competitive also on the global market. One way for companies to realize this ambition is to interact with suppliers and customers in different kinds of supply chains. In the dyadic relation between two companies, three different levels of interaction have been identified. To be able to enhance the competitiveness instead of requiring excess workload, the level of interaction has to be adequate for the specific company and their market conditions. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the characteristics of supply chain interaction, both in terms of different levels of interaction and concerning the factors affecting the appropriate level of interaction. A basic prerequisite to enable companies to select an appropriate level of interaction within their supply chain is also to clarify the present use of terminology. This research is conducted through theoretical studies. The theoretical findings are synthesized in order to fulfill the research objective. Characteristics of supply chain interaction in terms of affecting categories and factors are identified. The factors are sorted according to the category they support. An interaction framework that can be used to gain an overview over the categories and factors affecting the level of interaction in a specific situation is developed. The resulting interaction framework is aiming at industry applicability but is based only on theoretical studies (which in turn are based on empirical data). The aim is to support the interaction level decision for, primarily, small and medium sized manufacturing companies in order to increase their competitiveness. Despite the amount of research within the supply chain area, the question how companies should select the way to interact within their supply chain has so far been left unanswered. In this thesis, a number of categories and factors that affects the appropriate level of interaction are identified and listed.

  • Language policy for a bilingual faculty
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Bi- and multilingual universities, Helsinki, Finland, Sept 1-3, 2005.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Faculty of Science and Technology of Uppsala University is for all practical purposes a bilingual institution, using both Swedish and English in education and research. Extensive use of English in teaching, and also in intrauniversity communication, permits recruitment of nonSwedishspeaking students, researchers and professors, and also prepares our students forinternational careers. However, the introduction of English has been somewhat haphazard, not taking into account possible negative effects on communication in Swedish, nor on students'learning. In order to improve students' and professors' language skills, and achieve a good balance between Swedish and English, the faculty board appointed a language committee in 2003 whose task was to propose a language policy for the faculty. A first part, stating as a main goal that all communication from and within the faculty should have the highest quality possible, has been adopted by the board. A second part including language planning with respect to status, corpus, and acquisition for both Swedish and English to accomplish this goal was sent to the board of the faculty in May, 2005. Implementation of this policy will affect all faculty activities, especially education. Suggestedannual reports on language status will raise our present minimal knowledge about possible domain losses and allow for relevant countermeasures.

  • Ingår i: Theoretical Computer Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0304-3975 .- 1879-2294. ; 164:1-2, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show how to improve the complexity of heap operations and heapsort using extra bits. We first study the parallel complexity of implementing priority queue operations on a heap. The tradeoff between the number of extra bits used, the number of processors available, and the parallel time complexity is derived. While inserting a new element into a heap in parallel can be done as fast as parallel searching in a sorted list, we show how to delete the smallest element from a heap in constant time with a sublinear number of processors, and in sublogarithmic time with a sublogarithmic number of processors. The models of parallel computation used are the CREW PRAM and the CRCW PRAM. Our results improve those of previously known algorithms. Moreover, we study a variant, the fine heap, of the traditional heap structure. A fast algorithm for constructing this new data structure is designed using an interesting technique, which is also used to develop an improved heapsort algorithm. Our variation of heapsort is faster than I. Wegener's (1993) heapsort and requires less extra space.

  • Cancer Risk Assessment of Airborne PAHs Based on in Vitro Mixture Potency Factors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 51:15, s. 8805-8814
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Complex mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common environmental pollutants associated with adverse human health effects including cancer. However, the risk of exposure to mixtures is difficult to estimate, and risk assessment by whole mixture potency evaluations has been suggested. To facilitate this, reliable in vitro based testing systems are necessary. Here, we investigated if activation of DNA damage signaling in vitro could be an endpoint for developing whole mixture potency factors (MPFs) for airborne PAHs. Activation of DNA damage signaling was assessed by phosphorylation of Chid and H2AX using Western blotting. To validate the in vitro approach, potency factors were determined for seven individual PAHs which were in very good agreement with established potency factors based on cancer data in vivo. Applying the method using Stockholm air PAH samples indicated MPFs with orders of magnitude higher carcinogenic potency than predicted by established in vivo-based potency factors. Applying the MPFs in cancer risk assessment suggested that 45.4 (6% of all) cancer cases per year in Stockholm are due to airborne PAHs. Applying established models resulted in <1 cancer case per year, which is far from expected levels. We conclude that our in vitro based approach for establishing MPFs could be a novel method to assess whole mixture samples of airborne PAHs to improve health risk assessment.

  • Ingår i: Educational review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0013-1911 .- 1465-3397. ; 75:3, s. 429-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on Swedish students’ understanding of study trips to Holocaust memorial sites. Although about a quarter of all Swedish teenagers visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum each year, with the majority visiting as students as part of their school curriculum, this study is the first to examine these study trips from a student perspective. By applying critical discourse analysis, this article analyses 49 students’ reflections, written before, during, and after two study trips. The results suggest that the study trips’ discursive practice, which constitutes and is constituted by the study trips’ social practice, is regulated by a discursive order termed democratic pilgrimage. In addition, this article reveals two didactic deviations from previous research on study trips: the students’ positive feelings in relation to the Polish environment and the balance between victim and perpetrator perspectives. The latter creates tension within the students and is solved via articulations of democratic values.

    • Although about a quarter of all Swedish teenagers visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum each year, with the majority visiting as students as part of their school curriculum, there are up until now no previous research on this matter from a student perspective. The number of students participating on these study trips exceed the number of teenager being confirmed in the Church. In regard to the number of students, and also content vice, this pedagogical activity could be understood as the single largest intervention conducted in order to foster democratic values. This study is based on a critical discourse analysis of the diaries of 49 students’ taking part in two different study trips, written before, during, and after two study trips. The results suggest that the study trips’ discursive practice, which constitutes and is constituted by the study trips’ social practice, is regulated by a discursive order termed democratic pilgrimage. This democratic pilgrimage can also be understood as a ritual being part of a pedagogical grass root movement.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article focuses on teaching and learning about the Holocaust in Sweden, conducted as study trips to Holocaust memorial sites. Although about a quarter of Swedish teenagers visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum each year, this study is the first to examine these Swedish study trips. Since there are no centralised systems for arranging these study trips, this study regards dedicated teachers as the main stakeholders. By deploying critical discourse analysis of transcripts of nine in-depth interviews with teachers, the study terms the discursive order of the teachers’ talk about the study trips ritual democratic catharsis. The teachers’ two main purposes are the use of the study trips as a vehicle for the social dynamics in the group to evolve in order to promote personal growth among the students, and the students’ learning about democracy and human rights. Their overarching didactic strategy of focusing on the suffering of the victims is meant to evoke empathy among the students, but lacks an explanatory aim. The study critically points out the teachers’ unreflected relationship to historiographic Holocaust content as a subject, making their teaching vulnerable to contemporary political influences, jeopardising the democratic purpose of these trips.

    • We analyse the extent of the annual net cost reductions stemming from the introduction of four FTTH- enabled digital services for home care, as recently introduced in the Swedish city of Västerås. In total, between 2014 and 2020, it is projected that Sweden could save up to between €3 and €6 billion if such services were massively deployed today. The cost reductions are analysed for three different types of municipality. The article also shows that there is a significant cost reductions potential for a less extensive (and more realistic) deployment scenario with only 10% of users using digital services.

  • 2023

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interagency collaboration among social workers, teachers, and police is key to countering violent extremism in the Nordic countries by securing comprehensive assessment of cases of concern. Yet, previous research indicates that different institutional logics—perceptions of fundamental goals, strategies, and grounds for attention in efforts to counter violent extremists—exist across professions and challenge collaboration and trust building in practice. In this article, we empirically investigate these claims across social workers (n=1,105), teachers (n=1,387), and police (n=1,053) in four Nordic countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Using results from online surveys with professionals, we investigate the distribution of a ‘societal security logic’ and a ‘social care logic’ across professions and the degree to which these institutional logics translate into mutual trust. Through a comparison of institutional logics among practitioners with and without practical experience of interagency collaboration, we investigate whether and how institutional logics tend to mix and merge in hybrid organizational spaces. We conclude that differences in institutional logics across professions are differences in degree rather than in kind, but that such differences are important in shaping mutual trust and that experiences of interagency collaboration are correlated with a convergence toward a ‘social care logic’ conception of countering violent extremism.

  • Spectral characterisation of inertial particle clustering in turbulence
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluid Mechanics. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-1120 .- 1469-7645. ; 934
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clustering of inertial particles is important for many types of astrophysical and geophysical turbulence, but it has been studied predominately for incompressible flows. Here, we study compressible flows and compare clustering in both compressively (irrotationally) and vortically (solenoidally) forced turbulence. Vortically and compressively forced flows are driven stochastically either by solenoidal waves or by circular expansion waves, respectively. For compressively forced flows, the power spectrum of the density of inertial particles is a useful tool for displaying particle clustering relative to the fluid density enhancement. Power spectra are shown to be particularly sensitive for studying large-scale particle clustering, while conventional tools such as radial distribution functions are more suitable for studying small-scale clustering. Our primary finding is that particle clustering through shock interaction is particularly prominent in turbulence driven by spherical expansion waves. It manifests itself through a double-peaked distribution of spectral power as a function of Stokes number. The two peaks are associated with two distinct clustering mechanisms; shock interaction for smaller Stokes numbers and the centrifugal sling effect for larger values. The clustering of inertial particles is associated with the formation of caustics. Such caustics can only be captured in the Lagrangian description, which allows us to assess the relative importance of caustics in vortically and compressively forced turbulence. We show that the statistical noise resulting from the limited number of particles in the Lagrangian description can be removed from the particle power spectra, allowing us a more detailed comparison of the residual spectra. We focus on the Epstein drag law relevant for rarefied gases, but show that our findings apply also to the usual Stokes drag.

  • “When neo-Nazis march on Norwegian streets, you hear a lot of Swedish”: Pan-Nordic and transnational dimensions of right-wing extremism
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This report constitutes the first comprehensive review of right-wing extremism (RWE) in the Nordics (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden). In it, a team of 13 leading researchers have compiled and reviewed academic texts written about the topic. The result is a descriptive and analytical report of how the Nordic RWE milieu has developed from 1918 until today, with a specific focus on the pan-Nordic and transnational dimensions of the milieu. In the report, we also compile the practices used to prevent RWE in the Nordics, and analyze how well they are situated to handle the threat RWE poses to society.

  • Point Dose Profile Measurments using Solid State Detectors in Characterization of Computed Tomograhy Systems
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elesevier. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 607:1, s. 223-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing solid-state detectors for point dose measurements are typically mounted in a package with a high Z material acting as the back contact causing unsymmetrical response. In the Computed Tomography (CT) dose profile application this is a major drawback. A new silicon detector has been constructed without this disturbing element. The new detector has been mounted in a cylindrical tube and its characteristics are presented in this paper. The conclusion is that this new detector design is a major improvement for correct dose and dose profile measurements in CT systems.

  • Social Work as a Tool for Countering Violent Extremism in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Radicalisation, Extremism and Social Work Practice. - Abingdon, Oxon : Routledge. - 9780367409081 ; , s. 217-232
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Following a description of the historical background, with a focus on the arrival of Islam in Sweden and the diversity of Muslims in the country, this chapter provides an overview of how social workers in Sweden understand radicalisation and violent extremism. The chapter also addresses the relationship of social work to existing legal frameworks such as government action plans and policy documents. Between 2012 and 2015, approximately 300 Swedish Muslims, predominantly young men with an average age of 27.5 years, joined the Islamic State and similar movements in Syria and Iraq (Gustafson & Ranstorp, 2017). During this period, social work became increasingly important and is now a key factor in the Swedish government’s action plan for countering violent extremism (CVE). In this chapter, we outline how social workers are responding to radicalisation and violent extremism, explain the emergence of violent interpretations of Islam, and attempt to elucidate why some young Muslims are prompted to turn to violence. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Lena Robinson and M. • Another brick in the wall: The hateful other - neo-Nazis in school and teachers strategies for handling racism.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 Nordic Conference on Violent Extremism, 31 October - 1 November 2019, Aarhus.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research has shown that a young person’s situation at school, and pupils’ relationships with their teachers, have a clear impact on the processes which lead to young people being radicalized. The present study is a retrospective study, based on interviews with former neo-Nazis and their teachers at the time when they became involved in neo-Nazi organizations or milieus. In order to better understand the logics of pedagogy and what their teachers’ decisions to intervene and to confront their extremist beliefs and lifestyles led to, we have zoomed in on two extensive case studies. The results show that teachers’ attempts to isolate these students, and thereby contain the “problem”, failed. Confrontations and strategies designed to discipline the students instead led to resistance and stigmatization. Reflecting upon this situation today, both students and teachers agree that these confrontational strategies fueled the radicalization process.

  • Becoming, belonging and leaving – Exit processes among young neo-Nazis in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal for Deradicalization. - 2363-9849. ; Fall 18:16, s. 33-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing field of studies on exit processes from extremist and militant organizations. At the same time, however, what is missing is a more developed oral history of exit processes in different European countries. Interviewing individuals who left the neo-Nazi movement five or ten years ago, we have studied and analyzed how the interviewees’ narratives of exit processes are reconstructed and told today. Their reconstruction of narratives and stories on the exit process was influenced by several different factors, such as the time axis, education, intimate relations, employment situation, gender, and class. The results pointed towards a number of push and pull factors. The exit processes were seldom straightforward and linear, but instead dependent upon many social-psychological factors and processes.

  • Caught between the urgent and the comprehensible: professionals' understanding of violent extremism
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies on Terrorism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-9153 .- 1753-9161. ; 11:1, s. 111-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article focuses on how 13 professionals in key organisations in Sweden - all commissioned to design social and pedagogical efforts to prevent recruitment to terror groups that commit violence in the name of Islam - understand and reason regarding the root causes of recruitment and possible measures to counteract it. The 13 informants' reasoning is analysed through critical discourse analysis, the aim being to investigate discursive practices that influence the construction of a Swedish discourse on the "prevention of violent extremism". The analysis shows that in the informants' reasoning, a conflict can be found between security-driven doctrines that strive to individualise the issue of "violent extremism", and their understanding that segregation is the primary, though indirect, factor sparking "radicalisation". This conflict seems to impair the use of a professional language to describe and talk about the practical methodology that the informants are developing.

  • Countering Right Wing Extremism in Education Schooling in the Racist Badland
  • 2024
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book investigates how schools deal with racism and extremism, focusing on everyday life, students, and the surrounding community and geographical area. There is a lack of clarity on how racism and extremism should be managed in schools. Through extensive ethnographical data, interviews, and focus group interviews with students and school staff in mill towns and racist strongholds in Sweden, this book focuses on how racism and right-wing extremism are enacted, played out, and dealt with. It draws on theories of everyday and institutional racism as well as institutional ethnography. Formal and informal school strategies and pedagogical interventions intended to manage recurring problems in schools are discussed. The text offers a deeper insight into how racism and right-wing/neo-Nazism extremism are enacted and confronted in a rural Swedish school context and beyond. This book will be of interest to students of Terrorism Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies, and Security Studies.

  • Den hatfulle andre - Vägar in i och ut ur nynazistiska rörelser
  • 2020
