  • Report on volcanic plume measurements on volcanoes in Papua New Guinea

    • This report summarizes the findings of plume gas measurements conducted on volcanoes of Papua New Guinea (PNG) during September 2016, as part of the DECADE project. The total sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas fluxes of Tavurvur, Bagana and Ulawun volcanoes were determined by combining ground- remote sensing and ground-/airborne direct sampling, depending on the particular conditions on each volcano. During the campaign Tavurvur was degassing passively, without forming a continuous plume, and it was accessible for direct sampling in the crater. Its SO2 emission was found to be 0.19 ± 0.05 kg/s from scanning-DOAS and a stationary wide-field-of-view (WFOV) DOAS monitor, and the fraction of CO2/SO2 molar ratios was 2.6, obtained with a compact multi-GAS instrument. Bagana, on the other hand, had permanent degassing, producing occasional explosions and ash emission. The plume was measured by ground-based scanning-DOAS and a compact multi-GAS instrument aboard a multi-rotor UAV, resulting in a SO2 flux of 13 ± 5 kg/s and a CO2/SO2 of 15. Ulawun presented continuous passive degassing, forming an elevated plume which flux and composition were measured by car-traverses with a mobile-DOAS, a stationary dual-beam scanning DOAS, and a multi-GAS/UAV sensor. The SO2 flux of Ulawun was 11 ± 2 kg/s and the CO2/SO2 equal to 4.8. A stationary WFOV-DOAS instrument was left with the Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO) for longer-term monitoring of the SO2 flux from Tavurvur.

    • The unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, and the unprecedented social and economic costs it has inflicted, provide an important opportunity to scrutinize the interplay between the resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the resilience of the communities they are embedded in. In this article, we articulate the specific ways that SMEs play a crucial, and underappreciated role in building resilience to human and natural hazards, and provide new opportunities to accelerate the adoption of sustainability practices through the configuration of 'enabling ecosystems' geared towards promoting sustainability in the private sector. We argue that capacity-building and experimentation are not only required within companies, but also throughout this emerging supportive ecosystem of policies, resources (i.e. finance, materials, skills), governance actors, and intermediaries to adequately focus investment, technical capabilities and innovation. Ultimately, we call for a new transdisciplinary action research agenda that centers on SMEs as pivotal actors and amplifiers of community resilience; while recognizing that these firms are themselves in need of support to secure their own capacity to respond to, and transform in light of, crises. This research program calls for recognizing and applying the lessons that the pandemic presents to the urgent need for accelerated climate action. This will be enabled by developing more targeted approaches to collaborative capacity-building activities in SMEs that feed into experimentation and allow for the accelerated adoption of deliberate and strategic resilient business practices and models.

    • A segmented labour market model is presented, where discrimination of secondary sector workers in endogenous. Workers who are laid off from the primary sector are unwilling to take jobs in the secondary sector since this reduces their chance to return to the primary sector. Temporary shocks have persistent effects on the sectoral allocation of workers and on aggregate output.

    • Jobs in the primary sector require firm-specific training, with wages determined as a result of bargaining. Firms pay for the training and since they are imperfectly informed about worker productivity, they test workers before hiring them. The secondary sector is competitive. Taking a job in the secondary sector signals low productivity, and therefore workers in the secondary sector are unable to get jobs in the primary sector. Open unemployment coexists with unfilled vacancies for low wage jobs.

    • We report the discovery and analysis of the planetary microlensing event OGLE-2017-BLG-0406, which was observed both from the ground and by the Spitzer satellite in a solar orbit. At high magnification, the anomaly in the light curve was densely observed by ground-based-survey and follow-up groups, and it was found to be explained by a planetary lens with a planet/host mass ratio of q = 7.0 x 10(-4) from the light-curve modeling. The ground-only and Spitzer-only data each provide very strong one-dimensional (1D) constraints on the 2D microlens parallax vector pi(E). When combined, these yield a precise measurement of pi(E) and of the masses of the host M-host = 0.56 +/- 0.07 M-circle dot and planet M-planet = 0.41 +/- 0.05 M-Jup. The system lies at a distance D-L = 5.2 +/- 0.5 kpc from the Sun toward the Galactic bulge, and the host is more likely to be a disk population star according to the kinematics of the lens. The projected separation of the planet from the host is a(perpendicular to) = 3.5 +/- 0.3 au (i.e., just over twice the snow line). The Galactic-disk kinematics are established in part from a precise measurement of the source proper motion based on OGLE-IV data. By contrast, the Gaia proper-motion measurement of the source suffers from a catastrophic 10 sigma error.

  • Outcomes after perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with proximal femoral fractures: an international cohort study

    • Studies have demonstrated high rates of mortality in people with proximal femoral fracture and SARS-CoV-2, but there is limited published data on the factors that influence mortality for clinicians to make informed treatment decisions. This study aims to report the 30-day mortality associated with perioperative infection of patients undergoing surgery for proximal femoral fractures and to examine the factors that influence mortality in a multivariate analysis.SettingProspective, international, multicentre, observational cohort study.ParticipantsPatients undergoing any operation for a proximal femoral fracture from 1 February to 30 April 2020 and with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection (either 7 days prior or 30-day postoperative).Primary outcome30-day mortality. Multivariate modelling was performed to identify factors associated with 30-day mortality.ResultsThis study reports included 1063 patients from 174 hospitals in 19 countries. Overall 30-day mortality was 29.4% (313/1063). In an adjusted model, 30-day mortality was associated with male gender (OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.68 to 3.13, p<0.001), age >80 years (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.1 to 2.31, p=0.013), preoperative diagnosis of dementia (OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.16, p=0.005), kidney disease (OR 1.73, 95% CI 1.18 to 2.55, p=0.005) and congestive heart failure (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.06 to 2.48, p=0.025). Mortality at 30 days was lower in patients with a preoperative diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 (OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.6 (0.42 to 0.85), p=0.004). There was no difference in mortality in patients with an increase to delay in surgery (p=0.220) or type of anaesthetic given (p=0.787).ConclusionsPatients undergoing surgery for a proximal femoral fracture with a perioperative infection of SARS-CoV-2 have a high rate of mortality. This study would support the need for providing these patients with individualised medical and anaesthetic care, including medical optimisation before theatre. Careful preoperative counselling is needed for those with a proximal femoral fracture and SARS-CoV-2, especially those in the highest risk groups.Trial registration numberNCT04323644

    • Recently, a rare variant in the amyloid precursor protein gene (APP) was described in a population from Iceland. This variant, in which alanine is replaced by threonine at position 673 (A673T), appears to protect against late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD). We evaluated the frequency of this variant in AD cases and cognitively normal controls to determine whether this variant will significantly contribute to risk assessment in individuals in the United States.
