  • Digital Tools and Information Needs Assessment for Efficient Deviation Handling in SMEs
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering at SPS2020. - : IOS Press BV. - 9781614994398 ; , s. 24-35
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a time of change focusing on the application of technology, there is a high risk of underestimating the compliance of internal needs and adaption to context. The research study employs a qualitative approach using the case study methodology. The source of data comes from five different manufacturing companies categorized as Small to Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs). A multidisciplinary team performed semi-structured interviews and fieldwork at each site, along with regular online meetings with the partners. The study employs five dimensions of the information quality perspective to assess information utilized to support deviation handling and connects the information quality deficiencies to the digital tools' impact. The empirical findings indicate the need for the companies to perform a requirement analysis of information needs before the adoption of digital systems or digital tools, to assess their current state in terms of data and information. The paper discusses the impact digital tools may have on deviation management in SMEs and under which circumstances digital tools could improve deviation management. Lastly, this paper intends to shed light on the utilization of digital technologies for disturbance handling on the production shop floor. © 2020 The authors

  • Inter-Relation Between Product Variant Codification and Assembly Work for Flexible Manufacturing in Autonomous Group
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Processing Technology. ; 52, s. 133 - 140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The most socio-technically advanced assembly system designs inventible requires reformed/reconfigured information systems dealing with product data (which in turn defines the product architecture and product variation). In fact, no any such (real-life) plant or assembly system would work as anticipated otherwise. And this publication is to some extent describing some selected aspects of this (very) dilemma (changing information systems are usually not something considered than designing assembly systems) (thus are totally new plants – and in turn totally new information systems – most often the real practical change to create something unorthodox) (however, which scientist will gain such opportunities, this is really rare, i.e. the projection of the Volvo Uddevalla plant was thus an exception and the trust given by the industry – by Volvo Uddevalla project organisation – was appreciated by some of the authors).

  • Assembly station design: A quantitative comparison of the effects of kitting and continuous supply
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management. - : Emerald. - 1741-038X. ; 23:3, s. 315-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine how kitting, compared to continuous supply, affects the time spent by the assembler fetching parts in manual assembly. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on an experimental setup at the Saab Automobile assembly plant in Trollhättan, Sweden. Experienced assemblers were studied as they performed the same assembly operations in ten different configurations. Each configuration consisted of a different arrangement in terms of how parts were presented. The use of kits to present parts was compared to parts presentation through continuous supply, where each part number was presented in a separate container. Findings – The time for fetching parts is significantly shorter when parts are presented through kitting instead of through continuous supply. Furthermore, the shorter fetching time is not just related to a shorter distance between assembly object and parts presentation, which can often be achieved through kitting. The reduction of time spent searching for parts is also considerable. Practical implications – The results of the paper provide valuable input in the design of assembly and materials supply systems, as they enable a better understanding of the relative performance of the materials feeding principles of kitting and continuous supply. Originality/value – Previous studies of kitting and its impact on assembly are mostly conceptual or qualitative, whereas quantitative studies are scarce. The current paper provides a substantial contribution by quantifying the effects that kitting, compared to continuous supply, has on the time spent fetching parts.

  • Avenues of entry: how industrial engineers and ergonomists access and influence human factors and ergonomics issues
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Industrial Engineering. - 1751-5262 .- 1751-5254. ; 8:3, s. 325-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study compares how Canadian industrial engineers (IEs) and ergonomists ‘position themselves’ to influence human factors and ergonomics (HFE) issues. The study examined how these stakeholders perceived their influence on HFE issues, constraints they operated under, and strategies used. The results contribute to an understanding of decisions and processes surrounding HFE practices, showing that organisational entry points and stakeholder expectations on IEs and ergonomists affect their influence on HFE issues. Ergonomists influenced HFE issues by leveraging their knowledge of other stakeholders’ priorities, and were more dependent on accessing the issue via a ‘problem owner’. IEs were often entrusted with greater freedom to act on improvements. Expressing HFE improvements in terms of business benefits was a successful strategy for both. It was found that ergonomists operated as ‘partial solution builders’, trying to influence the HFE issue as an expert, lobbyist or facilitator. Based on the results, an existing framework was modified.

  • Data Collection and Analysis of Manual Work Using Video Recording and Personal Computer Techniques
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - 1872-8219 .- 0169-8141. ; 19:4, s. 291-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This publication initially reports on data collection and analysis of assembly systems including manual work using the so-called `loss analysis' which we have applied to the automotive industry during two decades of research and development work. In the further development of this method of analysis we have during the last few years synchronized a personal computer and a video recorder, thereby facilitating data collection of true shop floor information, as well as developing the analysis procedure to also include ergonomic aspects and work performance in the analysis. This publication reports on: (1) the background, (2) the prototype equipment used for data collection and analysis which is illustrated by empirical data using the equipment to analyze stamping of sheet metal, as well as assembly of automobile doors and drivelines, and (3) how to integrate a `loss analysis' with an ergonomic analysis of working postures (in this specific case using the so-called OWAS technique) studying assembly work on an automobile door. In this case, we noted that the division of labour loss represents over 60% of the time consumption for assembly work. This analysis indicates that from an ergonomic point of view it is primarily worth studying what activities are included in the assembly work classified as OWAS workload level 2. Relevance to industry This paper describes and illustrates methods and equipment developed consisting of a synchronized personal computer and video recorder. This promotes a design based on empirical data for specific cases through facilitating the collection and analysis of shop floor information about manual work and process efficiency of interest for the design of assembly systems.

  • Datainsamling och analys av serieproduktionssystem genom att kombinera video- och persondatorteknik
  • 1994
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This was the first attempt to publish the result of our research and development work regarding a self-developed method to synchronise a video recorder and personal computer. Which in turn gave birth to an extensive register of video-registration that still are saved at Chalmers University of Technology (this register’s existence has not been resolved after Engström’s retirement, the registrations have among other things included personal agreements with the people video-recorded) (we got the opportunity to video-record the assembly work at the Volvo Uddevalla plant, which resulted in a bewildering amount of VHS-tapes that rather obviously needed our attention in order to be evaluated) (this was the reason for this particular research and development work). The method in question has thereafter (more or less been) nicked by other scientists, which who we have cooperated at Lindholmen Utveckling in Gothenburg. Who has constructed a digitalised version of this method, our own self-developed equipment comprised usage of VHS-tapes (see some of the other publications registered in Chalmers Public Library CPL).

  • Safety stock determination during production transfer
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 22 nd International Annual EurOMA Conference, Neuchâtel, June 28 - July 1, 2015.. - Neuchatel, Schweiz.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose is to identify, through a simulation study, how the size of the extra safety stock needed when transferring production vary with uncertainties introduced by the transfer. The study shows that there is a substantial uncertainty increase during production transfer, related to the uncertainty of time to reach steady state. Learning curve factors have the largest impact, while the effects for the production yield factors are about of half their size, but still considerably large in relation to the regular safety stock. The study contributes by structuring the decision problem and indicating the importance of various uncertainties.

  • Materials flow effectiveness in press operations
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 13th ICPR Conference, Jerusalem, 1997..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with materials flow activities and efficiency within the manufacturing industry, especially where subsequent press operations are performed. The idea studied in the paper is to enable simultaneous performance of two or more press operations on the component, by equipping the press with several subsequent tools on the press table. Empirical data show that materials handling times, throughput times, internal transportation, etc., decrease considerably when this technique is implemented in a job shop environment.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th International EurOMA Conference, Porto, June 6-9, 2010.

    • AbstractThis paper deals with applicability of Kanban and Conwip for production planning in planning environments non-typical for the use of such methods by reporting a case study at a company producing complex products of high value. Simulation was applied to test the performance of the two consumption-based control logics and compare these with the present method, based on dispatch lists and supervisor-managed priority control. The result showed that Conwip outperformed Kanban, and that both methods were competitive compared to the present method and the performance targets of the case company.

  • Integrating human factors into discrete event simulations of parallel flow strategies.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Production Planning and Control. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0953-7287 .- 1366-5871. ; 20:1, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article demonstrates an approach to integrating human factors (HF) into a discrete event simulation (DES)study of semi-parallelised production strategies. Operationalised HF included operators’ autonomy at work,a known workplace health factor; and reduced operator capability, a factor for new or injured operators. TheseHF were tested in scenarios of serial flow and two degrees of semi-parallelised flow. The parallel productionsystems demonstrated better productivity than serial flow in all conditions tested and were less affected by eitherof the HF tested. It is concluded that HF can be integrated into DES which facilitates early considerationof operator risk and system vulnerabilities. Parallel production approaches, although less common in practice, appear to have advantages over serial flow in terms of productivity, injury risk and the accommodationof operators with temporarily reduced capacity. Further research should expand the range and test the validity ofHF integrated into DES modelling procedures.

  • Simulating operator learning during production ramp-up in parallel vs. serial flow production
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 55:3, s. 845-857
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this research is to demonstrate how human learning models can be integrated into discrete event simulation to examine ramp-up time differences between serial and parallel flow production strategies. The experimental model examined three levels of learning rate and minimum cycle times. Results show that while the parallel flow system had longer ramp-up times than serial flow systems, they also had higher maximum throughput capacity. As a result, the parallel flow system frequently outperformed lines within the first weeks of operation. There is a critical lack of empiricalevidence or methods that would allow designers to accurately determine what the critical learning parameters might be in their specific operations, and further research is needed to create predictive tools in this important area.
