- Collaboration and continuity between school types are important factors that favour long-term learning and that need to be given attention in the transition between early childhood school institutions. This study highlights teachers’ experiences of information-sharing during the transition from Swedish preschool to preschool class (i.e., from the daycare to school) with regards to children’s literacy learning. To find out and evaluate the individual child’s development, both the child’s actual and proximal development zone need to be taken into account in the transition. It appears that some preschool teachers wish to share information on children’s literacy learning but that it is mainly about the children’s interest in literacy activities. Also the preschool class teachers’ wishes to know more about the children’s literacy learning are too much on a general level as to be able to provide a good enough basis for planning literacy activities that fit every individual child. A large part of the outcomes derive from the preschool tradition that has viewed care as being core to its work, and considered learning and achievement as domains associated with compulsory school. This article discusses whether the training of teachers in early childhood education needs stronger focus on literacy learning.

- This study highlights teachers’ experiences with transition from Swedish preschool to preschool class, i. e. from the daycare centre to the formal school. One assumption was that transition activities, to favour continuity in the long-term, need to focus on children’s learning within the target areas that the policy documents specify for preschool. Empirical data were collected through a combination of a questionnaire and interviews. The study shows that transition activities occur between institutions. These are in place to allow for a safe transition for children rather than to allow for continuous and long-term learning in the target areas in the curriculum. Care for children and beliefs about the types of school activities have an impact on the activities and standpoints in the transition processes. Professional assessment of children’s learning and the need for greater consensus within various types of schools in terms of the learning of the individual child in different fields are discussed.

Överlämning av information från förskola till förskoleklass gällande elevers skriftspråkliga utveckling

- Forskning om överlämningar mellan olika skolformer har funnit att det är av betydelse för barns kontinuerliga och långsiktiga lärande att mottagande verksamhet tar tillvara de erfarenheter barnet redan erövrat. Detta eftersom lärandet gynnas av att verksamheten fortsätter på samma sätt utan onödiga avbrott. I föreliggande studie undersöks verksamma lärares erfarenheter av överlämning av information från förskola till förskoleklass gällande elevers skriftspråkliga utveckling. Traditioner, bristande samarbete och öppenhet mellan verksamheterna anges hindra samverkan kring överlämnandet. Det överlämnande som görs fokuserar i hög grad barn som ”sticker ut”, det vill säga ligger långt framme eller är sena i sin utveckling. Rädsla för bedömning uppges också vara en orsak till att överlämnandet inte genomförs mera nyanserat. Bristfällig utbildning om både skriftspråksutveckling och kontinuerligt lärande framstår emellertid som den huvudsakliga orsaken till att överlämnande vad gäller barns skriftspråkliga utveckling i det närmaste är obefintligt.

- Syftet med studien var att synliggöra verksamma förskollärares erfarenheter av överlämning från förskola till förskoleklass. Ett antagande var att överlämningen, för att gynna kontinuitet och långsiktighet, behöver fokusera barns lärande inom målområden som styrdokumenten anger för förskolans verksamhet. Empirisk data samlades in genom en kombination av frågeformulärmetod och intervjumetod. 36 förskollärare i förskolan och 38 förskollärare i förskoleklassen besvarade en enkät, medan 4 förskollärare i respektive verksamhet intervjuades. Analysen genomfördes abduktivt genom att studiens teoretiska utgångspunkter och frågeställningar utgjorde grund för teman som identifierades i det empiriska materialet. Studien visar att det genomförs överlämningar mellan verksamheterna. Dessa görs för att ge barnen en trygg övergång snarare än för att gynna kontinuerligt och långsiktigt lärande inom angivna målområden. Omsorg om barnen och föreställningar om skolformernas verksamhet ger avtryck på agerande och ställningstagande i överlämningarna. I artikeln diskuteras professionell bedömning av barns lärande samt behovet av ökad samsyn inom förskola och förskoleklass vad gäller enskilda barns lärande inom olika områden.

Ensemble Modeling of the Baltic Sea Ecosystem to Provide Scenarios for Management

- We present a multi-model ensemble study for the Baltic Sea, and investigate the combined impact of changing climate, external nutrient supply, and fisheries on the marine ecosystem. The applied regional climate system model contains state-of-the-art component models for the atmosphere, sea ice, ocean, land surface, terrestrial and marine biogeochemistry, and marine food-web. Time-dependent scenario simulations for the period 1960-2100 are performed and uncertainties of future projections are estimated. In addition, reconstructions since 1850 are carried out to evaluate the models sensitivity to external stressors on long time scales. Information from scenario simulations are used to support decision-makers and stakeholders and to raise awareness of climate change, environmental problems, and possible abatement strategies among the general public using geovisualization. It is concluded that the study results are relevant for the Baltic Sea Action Plan of the Helsinki Commission.

- Multi-model ensemble simulations for the marine biogeochemistry and food web of the Baltic Sea were performed for the period 1850-2098, and projected changes in the future climate were compared with the past climate environment. For the past period 1850-2006, atmospheric, hydrological and nutrient forcings were reconstructed, based on historical measurements. For the future period 1961-2098, scenario simulations were driven by regionalized global general circulation model (GCM) data and forced by various future greenhouse gas emission and air-and riverborne nutrient load scenarios (ranging from a pessimistic 'business-as-usual' to the most optimistic case). To estimate uncertainties, different models for the various parts of the Earth system were applied. Assuming the IPCC greenhouse gas emission scenarios A1B or A2, we found that water temperatures at the end of this century may be higher and salinities and oxygen concentrations may be lower than ever measured since 1850. There is also a tendency of increased eutrophication in the future, depending on the nutrient load scenario. Although cod biomass is mainly controlled by fishing mortality, climate change together with eutrophication may result in a biomass decline during the latter part of this century, even when combined with lower fishing pressure. Despite considerable shortcomings of state-of-the-art models, this study suggests that the future Baltic Sea ecosystem may unprecedentedly change compared to the past 150 yr. As stakeholders today pay only little attention to adaptation and mitigation strategies, more information is needed to raise public awareness of the possible impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems.

- Aim: A vital element of COST Action IS0907, "Childbirth Cultures, Concerns and Consequences: Creating a dynamic EU framework for optimal maternity care", was the engagement of servic e users and other stakeholders in the knowledge transfer associated with the Action. Strategic national seminars which took place in Sweden, Switzerland and Portugal between 2011 and 2013 and were attended by a range of local stakeholders and international COST members, prove to be an important vehicle for the sharing of experiences of childbirth cultures within and across countries as well as the dissemination of current ideas on best practice and salutogenic birth. These events involved, variously, women of reproductive age, representatives of civil society organisations concerned with pregnancy and childbirth, midwives, obstetricians, maternity unit managers, policy makers, and academics from the fields of midwifery, maternal health, sociology and anthropology. This presentation will give a multi-media flavour of the proceedings of the seminars, including the debates which occurred around "optimal" birth. A broader aim is to highlight how intra- and inter-country exchange on childbirth through public events can be catalysed by initiatives such as the COST Action. Medium: A cross-over between an artistic presentation and an informative poster, including text, photography, video and sound. Description of content: A poster-style stand will provide a visual entrypoint, presenting textual and photographic extracts of the events and their outcomes. digital sound recording will share elements of the debates which took place. Selected video presentations from the seminars related to normal birth will be shared on a loop. The audience will be invited to provide their feedback either in writing or video; these responses will become part of the presentation. This presentation can be made during break periods when the organisers of the seminars will be available to answer questions and interact with the audience.
