  • Integration of generic skills in engineering education : Increased student engagement using a CDIO approach
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The 13th International CDIO Conference. - Calgary AB, Canada : University of Calgary. - 9780889533998 ; , s. 386-395
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To be able to successfully pursue a future career within engineering, students need to acquire not only disciplinary knowledge but also generic skills to become professionals. The CDIO model provides a foundation of generic skills that can be expected by the students’ future employers. This paper presents pros and cons when integrating generic skills in disciplinary projects and is based on surveys and interviews with students and teachers on two integrated courses, Project management and Interactivity in smart environments, on an integrated five-year Master of Science program at Umeå University. The results show that integrating two courses to give disciplinary meaning to projects make the students maintain their motivation during the course in Project management. In addition, the integration of the courses led to more time for the students for the actual project work. Lastly, both students and teachers also had the possibility to provide a better formal project structure on the disciplinary course. However, the results also show that the confusion among the students increased due to different requirements in each course. Thus, a high level of communication and a holistic view among the involved teachers is desirable to improve the overall success in course integration.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The digitalization of society is constantly increasing. Even though this is something that is affecting most industries, the newspaper industry has suffered a great deal during the last 20 years. It is, therefore, essential that both current business and revenue model change. This case study illustrates and analyses how opening up the innovation at a newspaper increased customer value and facilitated a change of business model. The study is based on action research in cooperation with Västerbottens-Kuriren, a top-10 news website in Sweden. The result show that the open innovation and design process used, provided new insights into the industry as well as produced an appreciated website that facilitated the transition into a changed revenue model using a paywall for digital content.

  • The media consumers’ conscious and unconscious choices : a key to understanding the news media consumption of tomorrow
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Colloque International Communication Électronique Cultures et Identités, 11, 12 & 13 juin 2014. - : The IUT of Le Havre : Information-Communication Department CIRTAI IDEES (UMR6228). ; , s. 1-8, s. 521-528
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The digital society of today is dramatically different than that of a decade ago. During the past decades computers have gone from being clearly visible and at the center of attention to becoming an integrated and omnipresent part of our everyday lives. Today, individuals are catching up on a reality where homes, workplaces and society to a large extent consist of microprocessors that collect, analyze and present information. With regards to news and information sharing, it may seem that the users, thanks to greater ability to choose content, hold the upper hand in this process. However, since these data are constantly collected and analyzed for various purposes by companies, for example in the media industry, the users’ choices may not be as unconditional as they may think they are. Using the Swedish media market as an example, this exploratory paper discusses the interdependency between people’s choices and the market-driven choices made by the media industry in relation to news, and the impact these choices may have on media consumption and the media market.

  • Python in a week : Conceptual tests for learning and course development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International CDIO Conference. - : NTNU SEED. - 9788230361863 ; , s. 470-480
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Programming has gradually become an essential skill for engineers and scientists across disciplines and is an important part of the CDIO Syllabus covering fundamental knowledge and reasoning. Recently, there has been a shift away from introductory programming languages like C and Java towards Python, especially in programs where the focus lies on handling and analysing large quantities of data, such as energy technology, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. This paper illustrates the successful setup of a one-week-long introductory Python programming course with a hands-on approach. Given the limited time, a challenge is how to effectively teach students a meaningful set of skills that enables them to self-guide their future learning. Moreover, since the course does not include any summative assessment, we need other means of measuring students’ learning and guiding course development. We address these challenges by coupling short lectures with short quizzes for formative assessment, adding another learning activity to the course. We find that, in the absence of summative assessment, short, frequent quizzes with immediate feedback are an excellent tool to track the learning of a class as a whole. Students report that the quizzes, albeit challenging, improved their understanding of programming concepts, made them aware of potential mistakes, and were a fun learning experience. Furthermore, the results from this paper illustrate how a new programming language can be taught to students without prior programming skills in a short period of time. We summarise our lessons learnt for designing and integrating quizzes in short-format programming courses.

  • Curriculum agility at faculty, department, program and course level
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 50th annual conference of the European society for engineering education. - 9788412322262 ; , s. 1872-1877
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This short paper describes the first prototyping of a self-evaluation process of Curriculum Agility at a Faculty of Technology in Sweden. The process comprises guided, semi-structured, individual interviews at different organisational levels within the faculty, a joint narrative based on those interviews, prioritizing development strategies per level, and jointly mapping them on importance and implementation time. The self-evaluation is part of and based on the research on the principles of Curriculum Agility. The results show the interplay in timely curriculum change for futureproof engineering education between the teaching staff, the systems and the people who control the systems. The self-evaluation brings together the different perspectives and perceptions within the faculty and gives insight in how those affect the willingness towards and occurrence of curriculum development. This work in progress indicates how doing such a qualitative self-evaluation paves the road for transparent strategic dialogues on a holistic level about what to give attention and organize differently.

  • Ingår i: Marketing Intelligence & Planning. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0263-4503 .- 1758-8049. ; 38:5, s. 587-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of Twitter in business as a medium for knowledge sharing and to crowdsource information to support innovation and enhance business relationships in the context of business-to-business (B2B) marketing.Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a combination of methodologies for gathering data in 52 face-to-face interviews across five countries and the downloaded posts from each of the interviewees' Twitter accounts. The tweets were analysed using structural topic modelling (STM), and then compared to the interview data. This method enabled triangulation between stated use of Twitter and respondent's actual tweets.Findings: The research confirmed that individuals used Twitter as a source of information, ideas, promotion and innovation within their industry. Twitter facilitates building relevant business relationships through the exchange of new, expert and high-quality information within like-minded communities in real time, between companies and with their suppliers, customers and also their peers.Research limitations/implications: As this study covered five countries, further comparative research on the use of Twitter in the B2B context is called for. Further investigation of the formalisation of social media strategies and return on investment for social media marketing efforts is also warranted.Practical implications: This research highlights the business relationship building capacity of Twitter as it enables customer and peer conversations that eventually support the development of product and service innovations. Twitter has the capacity for marketers to inform and engage customers and peers in their networks on wider topics thereby building the brand of the individual users and their companies simultaneously.Originality/value: This study focuses on interactions at the individual level illustrating that Twitter is used for both customer and peer interactions that can lead to the sourcing of ideas, knowledge and ultimately innovation. The study is novel in its methodological approach of combining structured interviews and text mining that found the topics of the interviewees' tweets aligned with their interview responses.

  • Evaluation of Push Notifications for Social Media Applications
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 31st Bled eConference Digital Transformation. - Maribor : University of Maribor Press. - 9789612861704 ; , s. 317-330
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of social media has impacted on people’s everyday life, precipitating the development of a new set of guidelines for designing applications (apps), creating heightened user engagement without crossing the line to frustration. This study focuses on how push notifications from social media apps should be designed in order to keep the user intrigued and returning to the app, without annoying the user to the point where they turn the push notifications off. The exponential growth in the usage of social media has emphasised the importance of designing apps with a user-centred functionality. The study used a combination of a survey questionnaire and a qualitative perception study, with the results collected as both data and extracts from interviews. This study identified that a high frequency of notifications from social media apps has led to resentment by users against pushes notifications in general. The app-user relationship is cemented from the beginning of the experience and the action the user takes in relation to notifications depends on their perception of the senders’ intentions. Younger users’ actions are also predominately driven by the phenomena Fear of Missing Out.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 2011 IEEE International Conferences on Internet of Things, and Cyber, Physical and Social Computing. - Los Alamitos : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769545806 ; , s. 170-177
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a conceptual model for a social media game will be illustrated. The idea is to find a way to integrate our physical and digital world in a way that will involve the environment around us containing both artifacts and people and become a natural part of our daily lives. We want to show that by integrate ubiquitous information and social media in a game idea, it is possible to create a concept for a social media game application that could be used at a tourist attraction, e.g. a zoo. The value that is received from this application is both educative for the visitors and marketing for the tourist attraction. The conceptual model of the social media game builds upon the foundations of internet of things for the future version of a tourist attraction, such as the Digital Zoo.

  • Significance of Print Quality in Variable Data Printing
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Taga Journal of Graphic Technology. - 1748-0345. ; 4:4, s. 179-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Print quality and variable data printing are two important topics when discussing digitalprinting and its ability to be a commercially successful printing technology. The aim ofthis paper is to determine the significance of print quality when using variable dataprinting to customize printed matters. In this study three levels of colour print quality andthree levels of personalization; entirely static, personalized with name, and personalizedwith name, text and image, were established. Sample material was obtained by creatingfictitious advertisements in the personalization levels, which were then printed at the printquality levels. A panel of respondents was asked to arrange the fictitious advertisementsin order of preference. At all print quality levels, personalizing with only name led to arather small increase in respondent preference compared to the static advertisements. However, personalizing with name, text and image led to a significant increase inpreference compared to a static or name personalized advertisements. Hence, to attractthe respondents a higher level of personalization should be used. The respondents weremore forgiving towards low print quality when the advertising information waspersonalized. Furthermore, personalization contributes more at lower print quality levels, indicating that print quality is more significant in static printed matters or printed matterswith a low level of personalization.

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For several hundreds of years printing has been the only effective channel for spreading mass communication. During the 1900s several new media channels have been invented and, with the addition of the Internet, this has both changed the way media is consumed and has increased the competition between different channels. This qualitative case study of 37 firms reports on how relationships are used in the printing industry to relieve some of the impact of the competitive forces from new, and easily accessible, media as a means for marketing and, furthermore, on the impact on the printing industry as an industry. The results from the case study show that there are both internal and external effects of forming relationships and those vertical, as well as horizontal, relationships are of great importance to create a sustainable competitive situation for the printing industry. Relationships are used to increase both the strategic flexibility of the firm and the flexibility of the print media channel. Furthermore, the study illustrates that the printing industry, and print as a medium of communication, is drifting gradually away from the actual customer due to the new paradigm of value creation.

  • Collaborative teaching project to increase students’ international experience : Experience from interweaving units in Australia and Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Abstrakt – NU 2018.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The global nature of business means getting international experience during studies at the universityis continuously increasing in importance. This project seeks to investigate the possibility of increasing students’ motivation to take responsibility for the learning process by creating “real” situations including international experience without having to travel abroad (Wen, Zaid & Harun, 2015; De-Marcos et al, 2014).This project involved the interweaving of the content of two units: Prototyping for Mobile Applications at Umeå University, Sweden, a fourth year unit on the five-year MSc engineering program in interaction technology and design and Current Issues in Marketing at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia, a third year marketing unit. Consequently, the engineering students created prototypes for mobile apps while the marketing students created marketing material. The virtual communication platform Slack was used to assist collaboration between students (Labus et al,2015).The challenge in the design of this collaborative curriculum was that the students must be able to finish their unit in case of collaborative problems. Hence, there was no total dependence between the two units and the lecturers used ad hoc flexibility over the course of the collaboration. It was also decided not to give the students all information about the project at the start of the units but rather on a need-to-know basis. The student review of the project showed that they liked the idea of the project but a more structured approach would be beneficial. Students on both sides of dyad often struggled with the unknowns, as they were reliant on students half a world away. However, from the communication platform it could be observed that the students exhibited skills in finding solutions and workarounds to complete their assessments.Analysing the project among teachers involved, revealed some challenges, however all teachers consider that this type of international collaborative curriculum can benefit the students (Chang &Lee, 2013). Challenges during the collaborative project included, stilted exchanges on issues due to time differences, differing understandings of cultural priorities and aligning the timing of assessment of the units’ requirements. However, benefits to the students included, experience to give and receive feedback, experiencing a new business culture and technologies, development of online media skills and having to solve real world problems. For the Australian students an added benefit was the visit to Perth of one of the Swedish teachers, which supplement their online experience (Lin, 2016). This may have contributed to a greater positivity toward the project reflected in their course evaluation.Experiences and learnings from the project include (1) the need to explicitly explain how all parts of project is going to work and how the students execute their role, (2) supervise a formal introduction of the students in each location so all students have the same knowledge about each other, (3) provide real-time opportunities by setting Swedish lectures in the morning and Australia lectures inthe afternoon, and (4) set joint deadlines between the two units and make clear the consequences offailing to meet deadlines.

  • Competitive and Flexible Company Structures using Vertical Integration and Cooperation : Empirical studies of the Commercial Printing Industry
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 23rd ANZAM Conference 2009.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates how company structures, with respect to vertical integration and cooperation, affect the competitive advantages and resource flexibility within the fragmented and highly competitive Swedish printing industry. The results are based on five qualitative case studies and one quantitative survey study. The results demonstrate that vertical integration is widely used and is important to get competitive advantages within the industry. The main reasons are customers call for a full service provider and the need for integrating adjacent activities in the value chain to ensure fast deliveries and steady and appropriate input to production units. However, the findings suggest that due to heavy costs, cooperation is used to increase firms’ resource flexibility to control necessary resources.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ANZMAC 2013 Conference Proceedings. - Auckland : The University of Auckland Business School.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a case study showing how the printing industry, by arranging their organizations, cope with the competition from new media and enable a high value proposition to their customers in terms of database driven print. The study is based on interviews with 24 firms in the graphic arts industry and a survey of 136 firms. The results show that even though the use of print in general is declining, print in campaigns is sometimes regarded as exclusive due to general noise in digital channels. The firms in the printing industry have engaged in partial vertical integration to get closer customer contact and, thus, increase the amount of customized print for marketing purposes.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ECCE '23. - New York, NY : ACM Digital Library. - 9798400708756
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was passed in 2016 to regulate companies’ use and storage of personal data, such as cookies, which are a common feature of the modern internet used to track user’s activity and preferences. This paper aims to examine people’s perspectives on cookie consent prompts and the effects of using deceptive design in cookie consent prompts. The results suggest that the design, rather than trust in the website’s organization, is crucial for users’ decisions to accept, decline, or manage cookies. Honest design is emphasized, and the dangers of deceptive design in cookie consent prompts are highlighted. Prompts that require full attention from the user and cover the content of the page are more likely to result in reflective and active decisions, but design friction that forces users to make a reflective choice causes irritation. The study also reveals a discrepancy between self-reported and observed behavior regarding cookie acceptance, as users tend to accept more cookies than they say they do.

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: TAGA Journal. - 1748-0337 .- 1748-0345. ; 3:3, s. 128-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital printing is used most successfully with a differentiated strategy that delivers high customer value whenprinting short runs or customized printed matters. This qualitative case study of a customer – supplierrelationship aims to identify and analyze how digital printing can be utilized as a business tool in therelationship between a service provider and a customer in a dynamic business environment. The service provider in this case has strategically changed the focus of the company from a production to aservice company with the focus on customer contact. Even though the service provider had an advantage on themarket, they choose to create disruption since they realized that they could not sustain this advantage forever ontheir dynamic market. This was realized even though it meant cannibalizing on their former core business –printing. The study indicates that a hypercompetitive-like behavior is becoming increasingly important to be able tosurvive in the dynamic and changing printing industry. The industry is today influenced by, and competingwith many companies that are not in-industry. By reengineering their products and services and moving fromthe cost-quality arena to timing and know-how it is possible for the service provider to control the outcome ofthe industry in a more successful manor. This study concludes that digital printing is used successfully when the customer’s main objective is not to printat all. Printed material will probably not disappear in a foreseeable future and therefore digital printing mostcertainly will increase its importance as a production technology. In the strive towards a paperless office, digitalprinting is a natural, convenient and profitable way of producing a non-electronic output is digital printing.

    • The concept of creativity is an important part of human society and the continuous evolution of artificial minds has raised questions on creativity among machines. This aim of the this study is to explore machine learning algorithms' ability to be creative. The study reported in this paper uses short samples of music generated by IBM Watson beats that are evaluated using expert assessment of 51 music teachers together with samples generated by humans as control samples. The results show that one of the machine learning generated samples showed the same level of creativity as the human generated samples. Hence, there are indications that today machine learning algorithms can create music that is hard to distinguish from human created music and can be considered creative.

  • Ingår i: 34th Bled eConference: Digital Support from Crisis to Progressive Change. - Maribor, Slovenia : University of Maribor Press. - 9789612864859 ; , s. 397-408
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a larger proportion of our lives moves onto the web, so does important and valuable information. This has led to an increase in different kinds of manipulative patterns (dark patterns) in web design with the sole purpose of being deceptive and tricking users. This paper discusses the comprehensive suite of deceptive design patterns on Internet services where the users are expected to comply with the use of cookies. This was done by analyzing 50 different home cooking recipe websites, regarding their appliance to GDPR and how they use different dark patterns in their design. Even though legislation tries tomove the choices from the website to the user, it is clear that by using deceptive design patterns it is possible to "bypass" the legislation and trick the user into making a favorable choice for the owners behind the website. The results show that out of the websites that were GDPR approved, a majority still use two types of deceptive design patterns - misdirection and sneak into basket.

  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IVSP '23. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450398381 ; , s. 183-190
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People make a vast number of decisions every day and these decisions invoke either a reflective or automatic behavior. Using e.g., nudging to influence a person’s behavior in a positive direction can have beneficial sustainable effects. This study aims to illustrate how digital nudging and design friction can be used to induce a reflective behavior in users of digital services during their decision-making. The field of study is the user’s reflection regarding sustainable choices when ordering meals online. The results provided from this initial case study showed that the participants preferred prototypes with implemented design approaches of digital nudging and design friction over a neutral prototype. Nudging had great impact on the decision-making process and provided feelings such as guilt if the participants did not select the option with the lowest carbon footprint. The design approach also induced a reflective behavior among the participants. Introducing so-called design friction provided a reflective behavior but had no impact on the participants decisions. Results also showed that even detailed information in the neutral prototype provided an informative and reflective behavior, which in some of the cases had an impact on the participants’ decisions.

    • This paper aims to provide guidance when designing acall to action in a digital system with the purpose to create anintended feeling and user engagement. The paper is based on a test of four different simple call to action constructions. The users clearly prefer constructions that have a high explainability and feels intuitive. Hence, the design should have a high level of transparency and show the user straight away what it demands from the user and what the result of the action is. Furthermore, the design should have a high usability to make it clear how touse the call to action.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper illustrates how information from CRM systems and other customer inputs are used in print production to enhance customer relations. The results identify three common ways user data is obtained and used focusing on more advanced customized solutions; (1) Data mining of stored customer data, illustrated by a case where transpromo based on purchase patterns are sent to customers, (2) use of pre-stored data depending of e.g. customers' orders, exemplified by production of customized instruction manuals based on customers' orders, and (3) user input in connection to the production, represented by a web-based service providing customers with the opportunity to customize photo books. The identified and illustrated scenarios give good examples of the importance to use these different concepts in the marketing mix to enhance marketing efforts.

    • Providing necessary knowledge and skills for engineering students to become successful professionals is a tricky task. Besides disciplinary knowledge, e.g., communication skills, ability to work in teams, and international experience are often mentioned as important. Regarding internationalization, most engineering programs in Sweden rely on either student exchange or low-level internationalization-at-home, such as international literature and lecturers. This paper explores sustainable international experiences for students on their home turf provided through an international interdisciplinary collaboration where engineering students in Sweden and marketing students in Australia work together on a project. The setup simulates a consultancy firm with development and marketing offices in different countries that cooperate to launch an application for the Australian market. The paper is based on interviews and surveys with students and teachers participating in this, since 2017, ongoing project.Findings reveal that students encountered several challenges that are hard to simulate in an ordinary university setting, e.g., language barriers, cultural differences, time differences, differences between disciplines, and varying work habits and values. The results also highlight opportunities such as learning from each other's perspectives and expertise, developing a more professional approach, presenting to people from other industry backgrounds, and gaining a better understanding of different cultures. The results show that the students gain professional experience that is of great value for their future profession. From a teacher's perspective, the paper discusses important issues when setting up an international inter-disciplinary collaboration, e.g., alignment of exercises, building a common ground, and the need for flexibility.

    • In recent years, schools made large investments to increase the integration and use of contemporary technologies in teaching and learning.Today iPads and educational applications are growing in popularity and are commonly used. These technologies have a potential beneficial effect on the learning, but studies show that some applications have flaws that hinder these positive effects, for example regarding the feedback provided to the user. This study has determined a number of guidelines for effective feedback in a learning situation and has further shown how well these guidelines can be reached in an educational application today. The study shows that there are both advantages and disadvantages of feedback in an application compared to giving feedback in a more traditional learning situation. Many of the guidelines for effective feedback were found to be possible to reach in an application, and the greatest advantage found in applications is that they can provide feedback timely on each action taken by the pupils.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Just as the media industry, media technology and interaction design are fast moving areas. Even though grounded in theoretical models, the problems that the students face after graduation are constantly changing and contemporary, which makes a CDIO approach to education important. This paper reports a case study concerning a project spanning two consecutive courses with the main objective to renew the digital news platforms of the media group VK Media. The project was carried out in 2013 with students from the five-year Master of Science program in Interaction Technology and Design at Umeå University, Sweden. The results illustrate how project-based learning and real case-based group projects can enhance both students learning and the internal process at the external industry partner. The results clearly show how that not only goals in the CDIO Syllabus 2.0 have been met during the project but also actual value has been created for the industry as the students’ design proposals have been implemented and launched publicly.

  • Institutional arrangements and competitive posture : effects of company structures in the commercial printing industry
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •  The research objective of this dissertation is to investigate the impact of institutional arrangements, with respect to vertical integration and cooperation, on competitive advantages within the commercial printing industry, with specific focus on digital printing. This dissertation comprises six research papers, based on four qualitative case studies and a quantitative survey study, all carried out in Sweden in the years 2004-2008.The results show that vertical integration is a way to achieve competitive advantages in the commercial printing industry and is a widely used strategy in Sweden. Being able to contract full service companies is appreciated by customers to printing houses, especially direct customers, due to their need for a supplier of complete solutions for printed matters. Consequently, a vertically integrated company can provide value added services which makes it possible for customers to minimize their organization regarding production and purchasing of printed matters. Other reasons for vertical integration are the need to ensure fast deliveries to customers and having a steady supply of appropriate jobs. Despite the believed strategic importance by the industry, the results show that the level of vertical integration has no significant impact on profitability. Vertical integration is strategically important for digital printing houses in order to develop their business because digital printing allows for fast deliveries, on-demand printing and variable data printing. Despite the commoditization of printed matter, the findings indicate that the industry, in general, focuses on providing a high service level even though it means having to set higher prices. Furthermore, the results point toward that this strategic positioning is beneficial for digital printing houses because they experience a lower degree of competition and a lower price pressure.Vertical integration can, however create inflexibility due to ownership and employment. The findings suggest that cooperation can be used to achieve fast access to valuable resources, such as production equipment and knowledge, and, hence, increase printing houses’ resource flexibility. Even though internal control of resources is regarded as important to be able to satisfy customers’ needs and produce customers’ orders on time, cooperation with partners can create similar strategic effects. Furthermore, cooperation can give cost and flexibility advantages compared to vertical integration by reducing internal need for production capacity and allowing access to complementary resources. Nevertheless, it is common to combine vertical integration with cooperation to create competitive advantages and make a company more flexible and dynamic toward market changes.

    • University degrees, such as engineering, that focus on professional competences are becoming increasingly popular in Sweden. However, there is still a need to not only include but to integrate different interdisciplinary skills in courses and education programs. This paper reports and analyzes a case study of the integration of business skills in two different courses on different study programs and levels. The results show that by shifting the actual foundation of a project course from technology to business development, a high level of engagement are achieved, among the students, to work with technology in a more realistic context. By integrating teaching of different professional skills alongside disciplinary knowledge and by putting disciplinary engineering courses into context, e.g. a business context, the students tend to work more systematically and rigorously both in conceiving, designing and implementing their technical projects. Hence, the situation becomes more similar to a real situation in the industry, where value driven development is a necessity. Additionally, by integrating teaching of such skills into the curriculum of several courses during a engineering program according to the CDIO Approach, a better understanding and a shift in the students' individual choices on project courses towards value driven development can be seen.

    • The global nature of business has increased the importance ofstudents’ international experience during their studies at the university. Usinginteractive technologies the projects investigated ways to increase students’motivation to take responsibility for the learning process by creating “real”international co-creation experience online. This paper presents learningsfrom two consecutive international collaborative teaching between EdithCowan University, Australia, and Umeå University, Sweden, in 2017 and EdithCowan University and the University of Rijeka, Croatia, in 2018. Feedbackfrom the students showed they enjoyed working across cultures and academicdiscipline on simulated products and marketing campaigns. Issues raisedincluded: the need to explicitly explain how all parts of project is going to workand how the students execute their role. Incorporation of a formalintroduction process for the students in each location so all students have thesame knowledge about each other. Furthermore, the provision of real-timeopportunities to collaborate in lectures and the setting joint deadlines betweenthe units are of importance. Despite some of the shortcomings of the project,it has provided a firm foundation for the refinement of ongoing collaborativeteaching.

    • This paper introduces a discussion and a conceptual model on value creation considering the concept of the Internet of Things. It is proposed that value creation occurs in different layers that take advantage of the development of the Internet of Things. The three parts are based on manufacturing, supporting and co-creative behavior of things. These parts of value creation are not mutually exclusive and value creation can, and should, coexist in all these layers. Hence, for different phases in the development, firms and situations, the layers fit differently into a value creation process.

    • This paper reports on how company structures, with respect to combining vertical integration and cooperation, so-called concurrent sourcing, affect the competitive advantages and resource flexibility within the fragmented and highly competitive Swedish graphic arts industry. The results are based on a case study approach and consist of data from seven interview series carried out 2004-2012. The results show that vertical integration is widely used and is important to get competitive advantages within the industry. The main reasons are customers call for a full service provider and the need for integrating adjacent activities in the value chain to ensure fast deliveries and steady and appropriate input to production units. However, the findings suggest that due to heavy costs, cooperation is used to increase firms' resource flexibility to control necessary resources. In order to create flexible company structures, so-called concurrent sourcing is important to level the need for high competitive advantage and low costs.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation has become increasingly important for most industries to cope with rapid technological changes as well as changing societal needs. Even though there are many sectors with specific needs when it comes to supporting innovation, the medical technology sector is facing several unique challenges that both increases the lead-time from idea to finished product and decreases the number of innovations that are developed. This paper presents a proposed innovation guide that has been developed and evaluated as a support for the innovation process within medical technology research. The guide takes the unique characteristics of the medical technology sector into account and serves as a usable guide for the innovator. The complete guide contains both a structure for the process and a usable web application to support the journey from idea to finished products and services. The paper also includes a new readiness level, Sect. 4.2 to provide support both when developing and determining the readiness for clinical implementation of a medical technology innovation.

    • This paper reports on a study regarding how vertical integration is used to increase customer relations in the printing industry and illustrates the competitive consequences with vertical integration towards customers. Results show that since direct customers are perceived as more loyal and profitable than advertising agencies and/or print brokers, integration of content creation is common to increase relations with direct customers. However, as direct customers' part of total production is still very small, integration of content creation gives rise to a potentially competitive situation between printing firms and advertising agencies. Printing firms recognized this problem as they try to avoid this competition. Two different approaches to the problem are illustrated. Printing firms either focus on simple jobs that are not of advertising agencies' interest or they isolate these services in a separate firm, and consequently can compete for direct customers and still be a printing firm to advertising agencies.
