  • Quality of locally designed surveys in a quality improvement collaborative : review of survey validity and identification of common errors

    • Objective: Surveys are a commonly used tool in quality improvement (QI) projects, but little is known about the standards to which they are designed and applied. We aimed to investigate the quality of surveys used within a QI collaborative, and to characterise the common errors made in survey design.Methods: Five reviewers (two research methodology and QI, three clinical and QI experts) independently assessed 20 surveys, comprising 250 survey items, that were developed in a North American cystic fibrosis lung transplant transition collaborative. Content Validity Index (CVI) scores were calculated for each survey. Reviewer consensus discussions decided an overall quality assessment for each survey and survey item (analysed using descriptive statistics) and explored the rationale for scoring (using qualitative thematic analysis).Results: 3/20 surveys scored as high quality (CVI >80%). 19% (n=47) of survey items were recommended by the reviewers, with 35% (n=87) requiring improvements, and 46% (n=116) not recommended. Quality assessment criteria were agreed upon. Types of common errors identified included the ethics and appropriateness of questions and survey format; usefulness of survey items to inform learning or lead to action, and methodological issues with survey questions, survey response options; and overall survey design.Conclusion: Survey development is a task that requires careful consideration, time and expertise. QI teams should consider whether a survey is the most appropriate form for capturing information during the improvement process. There is a need to educate and support QI teams to adhere to good practice and avoid common errors, thereby increasing the value of surveys for evaluation and QI. The methodology, quality assessment criteria and common errors described in this paper can provide a useful resource for this purpose. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2024.     • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

  • Effects of biotic interactions on tropical tree performance depend on abiotic conditions

    • Abstract Predicting biotic responses to environmental change requires understanding the joint effects of abiotic conditions and biotic interactions on community dynamics. One major challenge is to separate the potentially confounding effects of abiotic environmental variation and local biotic interactions on individual performance. The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) addresses this issue directly by predicting that the effects of biotic interactions on performance become more positive as the abiotic environment becomes more stressful. It is unclear, however, how the predictions of the SGH apply to plants of differing functional strategies in diverse communities. We asked (1) how the effect of crowding on performance (growth and survival) of trees varies across a precipitation gradient, and (2) how functional strategies (as measured by two key traits: wood density and leaf mass per area, LMA) mediate average demographic rates and responses to crowding across the gradient. We built trait-based neighborhood models of growth and survival across a regional precipitation gradient where increasing precipitation is associated with reduced abiotic stress. In total, our dataset comprised ~170,000 individual trees belonging to 252 species. The effect of crowding on tree performance varied across the gradient; crowding negatively affected growth across plots and positively affected survival in the wettest plot. Functional traits mediated average demographic rates across the gradient, but we did not find clear evidence that the strength of these responses depends on species? traits. Our study lends support to the SGH and demonstrates how a trait-based perspective can advance these concepts by linking the diversity of species interactions with functional variation across abiotic gradients.

  • A global meta-analysis of the relative extent of intraspecific trait variation in plant communities

    • Recent studies have shown that accounting for intraspecific trait variation (ITV) may better address major questions in community ecology. However, a general picture of the relative extent of ITV compared to interspecific trait variation in plant communities is still missing. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis of the relative extent of ITV within and among plant communities worldwide, using a data set encompassing 629 communities (plots) and 36 functional traits. Overall, ITV accounted for 25% of the total trait variation within communities and 32% of the total trait variation among communities on average. The relative extent of ITV tended to be greater for whole-plant (e.g. plant height) vs. organ-level traits and for leaf chemical (e.g. leaf N and P concentration) vs. leaf morphological (e.g. leaf area and thickness) traits. The relative amount of ITV decreased with increasing species richness and spatial extent, but did not vary with plant growth form or climate. These results highlight global patterns in the relative importance of ITV in plant communities, providing practical guidelines for when researchers should include ITV in trait-based community and ecosystem studies.
