  • The Magnitude of Global Marine Species Diversity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Current Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0960-9822 .- 1879-0445. ; 22:23, s. 2189-2202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The question of how many marine species exist is important because it provides a metric for how much we do and do not know about life in the oceans. We have compiled the first register of the marine species of the world and used this baseline to estimate how many more species, partitioned among all major eukaryotic groups, may be discovered. Results: There are similar to 226,000 eukaryotic marine species described. More species were described in the past decade (similar to 20,000) than in any previous one. The number of authors describing new species has been increasing at a faster rate than the number of new species described in the past six decades. We report that there are similar to 170,000 synonyms, that 58,000-72,000 species are collected but not yet described, and that 482,000-741,000 more species have yet to be sampled. Molecular methods may add tens of thousands of cryptic species. Thus, there may be 0.7-1.0 million marine species. Past rates of description of new species indicate there may be 0.5 +/- 0.2 million marine species. On average 37% (median 31%) of species in over 100 recent field studies around the world might be new to science. Conclusions: Currently, between one-third and two-thirds of marine species may be undescribed, and previous estimates of there being well over one million marine species appear highly unlikely. More species than ever before are being described annually by an increasing number of authors. If the current trend continues, most species will be discovered this century.

  • Reactive astrocyte nomenclature, definitions, and future directions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Neuroscience. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1097-6256 .- 1546-1726. ; 24, s. 312-325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reactive astrocytes are astrocytes undergoing morphological, molecular, and functional remodeling in response to injury, disease, or infection of the CNS. Although this remodeling was first described over a century ago, uncertainties and controversies remain regarding the contribution of reactive astrocytes to CNS diseases, repair, and aging. It is also unclear whether fixed categories of reactive astrocytes exist and, if so, how to identify them. We point out the shortcomings of binary divisions of reactive astrocytes into good-vs-bad, neurotoxic-vs-neuroprotective or A1-vs-A2. We advocate, instead, that research on reactive astrocytes include assessment of multiple molecular and functional parameters-preferably in vivo-plus multivariate statistics and determination of impact on pathological hallmarks in relevant models. These guidelines may spur the discovery of astrocyte-based biomarkers as well as astrocyte-targeting therapies that abrogate detrimental actions of reactive astrocytes, potentiate their neuro- and glioprotective actions, and restore or augment their homeostatic, modulatory, and defensive functions. Good-bad binary classifications fail to describe reactive astrocytes in CNS disorders. Here, 81 researchers reach consensus on widespread misconceptions and provide definitions and recommendations for future research on reactive astrocytes.

  • Analysis of strain and stacking faults in single nanowires using Bragg coherent diffraction imaging
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 1367-2630. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) on Bragg reflections is a promising technique for the study of three-dimensional (3D) composition and strain fields in nanostructures, which can be recovered directly from the coherent diffraction data recorded on single objects. In this paper, we report results obtained for single homogeneous and heterogeneous nanowires with a diameter smaller than 100 nm, for which we used CDI to retrieve information about deformation and faults existing in these wires. We also discuss the influence of stacking faults, which can create artefacts during the reconstruction of the nanowire shape and deformation.

  • Hydrogen-assisted spark discharge generated metal nanoparticles to prevent oxide formation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Aerosol Science and Technology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0278-6826 .- 1521-7388. ; 52:3, s. 347-358
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There exists a demand for production of metal nanoparticles for today's emerging nanotechnology. Aerosol-generated metal nanoparticles can oxidize during particle formation due to impurities in the carrier gas. One method to produce unoxidized metal nanoparticles is to first generate metal oxides and then reduce them during sintering. Here, we propose to instead prevent oxidation by introducing the reducing agent already at particle formation. We show that by mixing 5% hydrogen into the nitrogen carrier gas, we can generate single crystalline metal nanoparticles by spark discharge from gold, cobalt, bismuth, and tin electrodes. The non-noble nanoparticles exhibit signs of surface oxidation likely formed post-deposition when exposed to air. Nanoparticles generated without hydrogen are found to be primarily polycrystalline and oxidized. To demonstrate the advantages of supplying the reducing agent at generation, we compare to nanoparticles that are generated in nitrogen and sintered in a hydrogen mixture. For bismuth and tin, the crystal quality of the particles after sintering is considerably higher when hydrogen is introduced at particle generation compared to at sintering, whereas for cobalt it is equally effective to only add hydrogen at sintering. We propose that hydrogen present at particle generation prevents the formation of oxide primary particles, thus improving the ability to sinter the nanoparticles to compact and single crystals of metal. This method is general and can be applied to other aerosol generation systems, to improve the generation of size-controlled nanoparticles of non-noble metals with a suitable reducing agent.

  • Multiscale in modelling and validation for solar photovoltaics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EPJ Photovoltaics. - : EDP Sciences. - 2105-0716. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photovoltaics is amongst the most important technologies for renewable energy sources, and plays a key role in the development of a society with a smaller environmental footprint. Key parameters for solar cells are their energy conversion efficiency, their operating lifetime, and the cost of the energy obtained from a photovoltaic system compared to other sources. The optimization of these aspects involves the exploitation of new materials and development of novel solar cell concepts and designs. Both theoretical modeling and characterization of such devices require a comprehensive view including all scales from the atomic to the macroscopic and industrial scale. The different length scales of the electronic and optical degrees of freedoms specifically lead to an intrinsic need for multiscale simulation, which is accentuated in many advanced photovoltaics concepts including nanostructured regions. Therefore, multiscale modeling has found particular interest in the photovoltaics community, as a tool to advance the field beyond its current limits. In this article, we review the field of multiscale techniques applied to photovoltaics, and we discuss opportunities and remaining challenges.

  • From plasma to nanoparticles : Optical and particle emission of a spark discharge generator
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 28:47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increased demand for high purity nanoparticles (NPs) of defined geometry necessitates the continuous development of generation routes. One of the most promising physical techniques for producing metal, semiconductor or alloy NPs in the gas phase is spark discharge NP generation. The technique has a great potential for up-scaling without altering the particles. Despite the simplicity of the setup, the formation of NPs in a spark discharge takes place via complex multi-scale processes, which greatly hinders the investigation via conventional NP measurement techniques. In the present work, time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to provide information on the species present in the spark from as early as approximately 100 ns after the initiation of the discharge. We demonstrate that operando emission spectroscopy can deliver valuable insights into NP formation. The emission spectra of the spark are used to identify, among others, the main stages of material erosion and to calculate the quenching rate of the generated metal vapour. We demonstrate that the alteration of key control parameters, that are typically used to optimize NP generation, clearly affect the emission spectra. We report for Cu and Au NPs that the intensity of spectral lines emitted by metal atoms levels off when spark energy is increased above an energy threshold, suggesting that the maximum concentration of metal vapour produced in the generator is limited. This explains the size variation of the generated NPs. We report a strong correlation between the optical and particle emission of the spark discharge generator, which demonstrate the suitability of OES as a valuable characterization tool that will allow for the more deliberate optimization of spark-based NP generation.

  • Be the fairest of them all : Challenges and recommendations for the treatment of gender in occupational health research
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Industrial Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0271-3586 .- 1097-0274. ; 43:6, s. 618-629
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Both women's and men's occupational health problems merit scientific attention. Researchers need to consider the effect of gender on how occupational health issues are experienced, expressed, defined, and addressed. More serious consideration of gender-related factors will help identify risk factors for both women and men. Methods The authors, who come from a number of disciplines (ergonomics, epidemiology, public health, social medicine, community psychology, economics, sociology) pooled their critiques in order to arrive at the most common and significant problems faced by occupational health researchers who wish to consider gender appropriately. Results This paper describes some ways that gender can be and has been handled in studies of occupational health, as well as some of the consequences. The paper also suggests specific research practices that avoid errors. Obstacles to gender-sensitive practices are considered. Conclusions Although gender-sensitive practices may be difficult to operationalize in some cases, they enrich the scientific quality of research and should lead to better data and ultimately to well-targeted prevention programs. ⌐ 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

  • Effects of selenium deficiency on xenobiotic-metabolizing and other enzymes in rat liver.
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research. - 0300-9831 .- 1664-2821. ; 63:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study was undertaken to characterize effects of selenium (Se) deficiency on 16 enzymes recovered in either one or more of the subcellular fractions of rat liver (as a basis for future studies on the mechanisms underlying the observed changes). Male rats were fed a Torula-yeast based diet with 0.23 mg Se/kg or the same diet with 0.009 mg Se/kg, from weaning and for 10 weeks. Statistically significant effects of Se deficiency were the following: Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase decreased to 0.14% of the Se-adequate controls, while cytosolic glutathione transferase increased 3-fold in Se deficiency when CDNB was the substrate, but decreased significantly when trans-stilbene oxide (diagnostic for subunit 4) was used as the substrate. Cytosolic DT-diaphorase increased about 7-fold in Se deficiency. Further, DT-diaphorase in the microsomal fraction was also significantly increased in Se deficiency, as were the microsomal and mitochondrial epoxide hydrolases and microsomal glutathione transferase. Furthermore, increased activity of the peroxisomal marker enzyme catalase (P < 0.05) was noted in Se-deficient rats. It is our working hypothesis that changes in enzyme activities in Se deficiency are mainly due to changed levels of endogenously generated metabolites or altered functions of endocrine tissues.

  • Circular Economy - Sustainable Materials Management : A compendium by the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University
  • 2020. - 2021
  • Rapport (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The scope of the compendium covers many parts of theemerging circular economy. We choose to place considerablefocus on some of the substances that we extract from theground – in particular raw materials and critical materials. We focus on circularity in these areas, because presentlywe use too much, too fast, and we are not re-using nearlyenough. In turn, this approach demands that we look atthe technologies that rely on such materials, and howbusinesses are innovating to make circularity of materialsa reality. This document provides many concrete examples of whatwe mean by sustainable materials management. We presentcutting edge insights on a range of topics.• Why raw material supply chains are important to society?• How circularity can benefit us?• Where changes in our economies are required?• Who needs to be involved?• What businesses are doing to make the circular economya reality?• How governments and regulators can support the circulareconomy?

  • Synthesis and magnetic characterization of MnAs nanoparticles via nanoparticle conversion
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 22:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the synthesis of ferromagnetic manganese arsenide (MnAs) nanoparticles via the conversion of primary Mn particles which are generated in an aerosol process in a spark discharge generator. After sintering and size selection in an aerosol setup, the particles are deposited on GaAs(100) B and Si(111) substrates. Subsequent conversion to MnAs particles takes place in an annealing process under a hydrogen atmosphere with an arsine background pressure. The magnetic properties are studied using a SQUID magnetometer. The annealed MnAs particles exhibit hexagonal facets and show anisotropic magnetic behaviour on GaAs(100) B substrates, whereas on Si(111) they remain spherical and show isotropic magnetic behaviour. Scanning transmission electron microscopy studies are used to confirm the conversion from Mn to MnAs.
