  • Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: eLife. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions.

  • Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 569:7755, s. 260-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities(.)(1,2) This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity(3-6). Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean BMI segregated by place of residence (a rural or urban area) from 1985 to 2017. We show that, contrary to the dominant paradigm, more than 55% of the global rise in mean BMI from 1985 to 2017-and more than 80% in some low- and middle-income regions-was due to increases in BMI in rural areas. This large contribution stems from the fact that, with the exception of women in sub-Saharan Africa, BMI is increasing at the same rate or faster in rural areas than in cities in low- and middle-income regions. These trends have in turn resulted in a closing-and in some countries reversal-of the gap in BMI between urban and rural areas in low- and middle-income countries, especially for women. In high-income and industrialized countries, we noted a persistently higher rural BMI, especially for women. There is an urgent need for an integrated approach to rural nutrition that enhances financial and physical access to healthy foods, to avoid replacing the rural undernutrition disadvantage in poor countries with a more general malnutrition disadvantage that entails excessive consumption of low-quality calories.

  • Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents' growth and development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 615:7954, s. 874-883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

  • European fitness landscape for children and adolescents: updated reference values, fitness maps and country rankings based on nearly 8 million test results from 34 countries gathered by the FitBack network
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: British journal of sports medicine. - : BMJ. - 1473-0480 .- 0306-3674. ; 57:5, s. 299-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (1) To develop reference values for health-related fitness in European children and adolescents aged 6–18 years that are the foundation for the web-based, open-access and multilanguage fitness platform (FitBack); (2) to provide comparisons across European countries.MethodsThis study builds on a previous large fitness reference study in European youth by (1) widening the age demographic, (2) identifying the most recent and representative country-level data and (3) including national data from existing fitness surveillance and monitoring systems. We used the Assessing Levels of PHysical Activity and fitness at population level (ALPHA) test battery as it comprises tests with the highest test–retest reliability, criterion/construct validity and health-related predictive validity: the 20 m shuttle run (cardiorespiratory fitness); handgrip strength and standing long jump (muscular strength); and body height, body mass, body mass index and waist circumference (anthropometry). Percentile values were obtained using the generalised additive models for location, scale and shape method.ResultsA total of 7 966 693 test results from 34 countries (106 datasets) were used to develop sex-specific and age-specific percentile values. In addition, country-level rankings based on mean percentiles are provided for each fitness test, as well as an overall fitness ranking. Finally, an interactive fitness platform, including individual and group reporting and European fitness maps, is provided and freely available online (www.fitbackeurope.eu).ConclusionThis study discusses the major implications of fitness assessment in youth from health, educational and sport perspectives, and how the FitBack reference values and interactive web-based platform contribute to it. Fitness testing can be conducted in school and/or sport settings, and the interpreted results be integrated in the healthcare systems across Europe.

  • Magnetoelectrics and multiferroics : theory, synthesis, characterisation, preliminary results and perspectives for all-optical manipulations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 56:27
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solid state compounds exhibiting multiple and coupled macroscopic orders, named multiferroics, represent a challenge for both theoretical and experimental modern condensed-matter physics. Spins and the electric polarisation in conventional magnetic and ferroelectric materials can be manipulated on their fundamental timescales, by means of femtosecond laser pulses. In view of the resounding success and popularity of the all-optical approach, it is only natural to wonder about the application of this scheme to study the intrinsic coupling between spins and charges in multiferroics. Deeply fundamental questions arise: can ultrashort laser pulses deterministically activate, enhance or suppress the magnetoelectric coupling on the femtosecond timescale? Can these processes be triggered in a fully coherent fashion, thus being unrestrained by any thermal load? Which mechanism of spin-charge coupling is most favourable to overcome these overarching and daunting challenges? This problem is interdisciplinary in nature, requiring contributions from materials science and condensed matter physics from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. High-quality materials suitable for optical investigations have to be identified, synthetized and characterised. General and valid models offer then a guide to the plethora of possible light-induced processes, resulting in the desired ultrafast multiferroic manipulations. Finally, healthy experimental schemes, able to unambiguously track the ultrafast dynamics of either the ferroelectric or the magnetic order parameter have to be developed and implemented. Our motivation to write this review is to lay a broad and multidisciplinary foundation, which may be employed as a starting point for non-equilibrium approaches to the manipulation of the multiferroicity on the femtosecond timescale. This was also one of the main goals of the COST Action MAGNETOFON, whose network constitutes the core of the authors of this review. The present work thus represents a part of the scientific legacy of MAGNETOFON itself.

  • Lifetime measurements of low-lying states in 73Ga and 70,72,74Zn isotopes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica B. - 0587-4254. ; 51:3, s. 837-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lifetimes of low-lying states in 73Ga and 70,72,74Zn were measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method. These nuclei were produced in deep-inelastic reactions in inverse kinematics with a 208Pb beam impinging on a 76Ge target. Prompt γ rays were detected using the AGATA tracking array coupled to the VAMOS++ spectrometer. Lifetime of the 5/2- state in 73Ga, measured for the first time, provides additional evidence for the existence of a 1/2-, 3/2- ground-state doublet. The lifetimes of the 4+ states in 70,72,74Zn were remeasured in an attempt to understand the discrepancies observed between earlier measurements. Our results are in agreement with those of previous plunger experiments.

  • Current practice and future challenges for power quality monitoring - CIGRE WG C4.112 perspective
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 15th International Conference on Harmonics and Quality of Power (ICHQP). - : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467319447 ; , s. 390-397
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the initial activities of the recently created CIGRE WG C4.112 “Guidelines for Power quality monitoring - measurement locations, processing and presentation of data”. The WG was created in January 2011 in recognition of demand for coherent set of guidelines for power quality monitoring in existing and future power networks to meet increasing customers' and the regulatory agencies' demands to provide information on the actual power quality level in power networks. Though still at early stages of the work the members of the WG compiled an extensive material about the state of the art of power quality monitoring. This paper summarizes current understanding of power quality monitoring issues and points out directions in which the WG will continue to work over next couple of years in order to provide answers to outstanding questions.

  • Changes in fusimotor activity during repetitive lengthening muscle contractions in decerebrate cats
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience. - 0306-4522 .- 1873-7544. ; 86:4, s. 1337-1342
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Responses of fusimotor neurons to lengthening vs isometric contractions have been studied in decerebrate cats. Spike discharges of fusimotor neurons to the medial gastrocnemius muscle were recorded from this muscle nerve filament during sequences of contractions and/or stretches of the lateral gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. The sequences lasted for 250-450s (duty cycle 4:2 s). Isometric contractions were elicited by electrical stimulation (40 Hz, 1.3 times motor threshold) of the muscle nerves. Lengthening contractions were elicited in the same way while the muscles were stretched by 4 mm at a velocity of 1 mm/s. Of 25 fusimotor neurons studied, 23 responded to muscle contractions with an increase in firing rate, subsiding towards the end of the sequence. The increase was either modulated with each subsequent contraction or smooth throughout the sequence. Approximately 64% of fusimotor neurons, responding to muscle contractions, responded in a similar way to the sequences of muscle stretches, applied alone. Responses to sequences of the lengthening contractions were significantly larger, on average, than those to the isometric ones, but smaller than the sum of the responses to the contractions and stretches applied separately. On the other hand, they were also larger in fusimotor units, showing no overt responses to muscle stretches alone.

  • Effects of cutaneous afferent input on fatigue-induced changes in fusimotor activity of decerebrate cats
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience. - 0306-4522 .- 1873-7544. ; 79:3, s. 935-942
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interaction of cutaneous and small-diameter, primarily fatigue-induced, muscle afferent inputs on fusimotor neurons has been studied in decerebrate cats. Spike discharges of fusimotor neurons to medial gastrocnemius were recorded from filaments dissected free from this muscle nerve. Non-noxious mechanical stimuli (10 Hz, 2 mm vibration) were applied to the skin area on the lateral side of the heel, innervated by sural nerve, during long-lasting (250 s) fatiguing contraction of lateral gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, elicited by electrical stimulation (40 Hz, 1.3 x motor threshold) of the muscle nerves. In 15 units (58%) the pattern of responses to muscle contraction and/or fatigue (initial transient, and late long-lasting increase in firing rate, respectively) was preserved in the presence of skin vibration which, by itself, provoked either a slight increase or no changes in fusimotor discharge rate. Pattern of the response to skin vibration prevailed in the presence of muscle contraction and fatigue only if the vibration by itself induced marked increase in fusimotor discharge rate (three units). In the remaining eight units the responses to both stimuli applied simultaneously were dissimilar in pattern to the response to either stimulus applied alone: the initial, tension-related, increase in firing rate was prolonged, while the late, fatigue-induced one was attenuated and its post-contraction part almost abolished. Possible mechanisms and functional role of interaction between cutaneous and muscle afferent inflows are discussed.

  • Relationships between the Pathogen Erysiphe alphitoides, the Phytophagous Mite Schizotetranychus garmani (Acari: Tetranychidae) and the Predatory Mite Euseius finlandicus (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in Oak
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Insects. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-4450. ; 12:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Food webs on forest trees include plant pathogens, arthropods, and their natural enemies. To increase the understanding of the impact of a plant pathogen on herbivore-natural enemy interactions, we studied the powdery mildew fungus Erysiphe alphitoides, the phytophagous mite Schizotetranychus garmani, and the predatory and mycophagous mite Euseius finlandicus in pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) leaves. In June, July and August of 2016, we assessed the severity of powdery mildew, mite population density and adult female mite size in 30 trees in three forests near Belgrade, Serbia. In August, the infection severity of E. alphitoides related positively to the population density of S. garmani and negatively to the body size of S. garmani females. Throughout the vegetative season, the infection severity of E. alphitoides related positively to the population density of E. finlandicus but not to its body size. The effect of E. alphitoides on the population density and adult size of S. garmani was not mediated by the population density of E. finlandicus, and vice versa. Interactions were consistent in all forests and varied with the summer month. Our findings indicate that E. alphitoides can influence the average body size and population densities of prey and predatory mites studied, irrespective of predator-prey relationships.
