  • 1/J corrections to semiclassical AdS/CFT states from quantum Landau-Lifshitz model
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics B. ; 735, s. 127-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One way to relate semiclassical string states and dual gauge theory states is to show the equivalence between their low-energy effective 2d actions. The gauge theory effective action, which is represented by an effective Landau-Lifshitz (LL) model, was previously found to match with the string theory world-sheet action up to the first two orders in the effective parameter $\tilde{\lambda} ={\lambda / J^2}$, where $\lambda$ is the `t Hooft coupling and $J$ is the total $R$-charge. Here we address the question if quantizing the effective LL action reproduces the subleading 1/J corrections to the spin chain energies as well as the quantum corrections to the string energies. We demonstrate that this is indeed the case provided one chooses an appropriate regularization of the effective LL theory. Expanding near the BPS vacuum, we show that the quantum LL action gives the same 1/J corrections to energies of BMN states as found previously on the gauge theory and string theory sides. We also compute the subleading $1/J^2$ corrections and show that these too match with corrections computed from the Bethe ansatz. We also compare the results from the LL action with a more direct computation from the spin chain. We repeat the same computation for the $\beta$-deformed LL action and find that the quantum LL result is again equal to the 1/J correction computed from the $\beta$-deformed Bethe ansatz equations. We also quantize the LL action near the rotating circular and folded string solutions, generalizing the known gauge/string results for 1/J corrections to the classical energies. We emphasize the simplicity of this effective field theory approach as compared to the full quantum string computations.

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 05, s. 024-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the AdS/CFT duality from the perspective of integrable systems and establish a direct relationship between the dimension of single trace local operators composed of two types of scalar fields in = 4 super Yang-Mills and the energy of their dual semiclassical string states in AdS5 × S5. The anomalous dimensions can be computed using a set of Bethe equations, which for ``long'' operators reduces to a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We develop a unified approach to the long wavelength Bethe equations, the classical ferromagnet and the classical string solutions in the SU(2) sector and present a general solution, governed by complex curves endowed with meromorphic differentials with integer periods. Using this solution we compute the anomalous dimensions of these long operators up to two loops and demonstrate that they agree with string-theory predictions.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using N = 2 superspace techniques we compute the four-loop spectrum of single trace operators in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of ABJM and ABJ supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories. Our computation yields a four-loop contribution to the function h(2)(lambda) (and its ABJ generalization) in the magnon dispersion relation which has fixed maximum transcendentality and coincides with the findings in components given in the revised versions of arXiv:0908.2463 and arXiv:0912.3460. We also discuss possible scenarios for an all-loop function h(2)(lambda) that interpolates between weak and strong couplings.

    • We compute the three-point structure constants for short primary operators of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory to leading order in the inverse coupling by mapping the problem to a flat-space string theory calculation. We check the validity of our procedure by comparing to known results for three chiral primaries. We then compute the three-point functions for any combination of chiral and non-chiral primaries, with the non-chiral primaries all dual to string states at the first massive level. Along the way we find many cancellations that leave us with simple expressions, suggesting that integrability is playing an important role.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using supersymmetric localization we compute the free energy and BPS Wilson loop vacuum expectation values for planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on S-d in the strong coupling limit for 2 <= d < 6. The same calculation can also be performed in supergravity using the recently found spherical brane solutions. We find excellent agreement between the two sets of results. This constitutes a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal setting. The free energy of maximal SYM on S-6 diverges in the strong coupling limit which might signify the onset of little string theory. We show how this divergence can be regularized both in QFT and in supergravity. We also consider d = 7 with a small negative 't Hooft coupling and show that the free energy and Wilson loop vacuum expectation value agree with the results from supergravity after addressing some subtleties.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis concerns a range of aspects of theoretical physics. It is composed of two parts. In the first part we motivate our line of research, and introduce and discuss the relevant concepts. In the second part, four research papers are collected. The first paper deals with a possible extension of general relativity, namely the recently discovered classically consistent bimetric theory. In this paper we study the behavior of perturbations of the metric(s) around cosmologically viable background solutions. In the second paper, we explore possibilities for particle physics with low-scale supersymmetry. In particular we consider the addition of supersymmetric higher-dimensional operators to the minimal supersymmetric standard model, and study collider phenomenology in this class of models. The third paper deals with a possible extension of the notion of Lie algebras within category theory. Considering Lie algebras as objects in additive symmetric ribbon categories we define the proper Killing form morphism and explore its role towards a structure theory of Lie algebras in this setting. Finally, the last paper is concerned with the computation of string amplitudes in four dimensional models with reduced supersymmetry. In particular, we develop general techniques to compute amplitudes involving gauge bosons and gravitons and explicitly compute the corresponding three- and four-point functions. On the one hand, these results can be used to extract important pieces of the effective actions that string theory dictates, on the other they can be used as a tool to compute the corresponding field theory amplitudes.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use the quantum spectral curve to compute the Hagedorn temperature for ABJM theory in terms of the interpolating function h(lambda). At weak coupling we compute this temperature up to eight-loop order, showing that it matches the known tree-level and two-loop results. At strong coupling we compute the dependence numerically, showing that it is consistent with expectations from supergravity and the plane-wave limit for the four leading terms in the strong coupling expansion, up to an overall shift of the zero-point energy for type IIA string theory on AdS4 x DOUBLE-STRUCK CAPITAL CP3. We conjecture an analytic form for this shift to leading order that is consistent with our numerical results.

This is two orders beyond the presently known behavior. Using the quantum spectral curve procedure of Harmark and Wilhelm, we show that our conjectured form is in excellent agreement with the numerical results.

  • Yang-Mills duals for semiclassical strings on AdS5 × S5

  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; 0311, s. 063-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider a semiclassical multiwrapped circular string pulsating on S5, whose center of mass has angular momentum J on an S3 subspace. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we argue that the one-loop anomalous dimension of the dual operator is a simple rational function of J/L, where J is the R-charge and L is the bare dimension of the operator. We then reproduce this result directly from a super Yang-Mills computation, where we make use of the integrability of the one-loop system to set up an integral equation that we solve. We then verify the results of Frolov and Tseytlin for circular rotating strings with R-charge assignment (J',J',J). In this case we solve for an integral equation found in the O(−1) matrix model when J'<J and the O(+1) matrix model if J'>J. The latter region starts at J' = L/2 and continues down, but an apparent critical point is reached at J' = 4J. We argue that the critical point is just an artifact of the Bethe ansatz and that the conserved charges of the underlying integrable model are analytic for all J' and that the results from the O(−1) model continue onto the results of the O(+1) model.

  • Topics in perturbation theory : From IBP identities to integrands
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis we present different topics in perturbation theory. We start by introducing the method of integration by parts identities, which reduces a generic Feynman integral to a linear combination of a finite basis of master integrals. In our analysis we make use of the Baikov representation as this form gives a nice framework for generating efficiently the identities needed to reduce integrals. In the second part of the thesis we briefly explain recent developments in the integration of Feynman integrals and present a method to bootstrap the value of p-integrals using constraints from certain limits of conformal integrals. We introduce also another method to obtain p-integrals at l-loops by cutting vacuum diagrams at l+1-loops. In the last part of the thesis we present recent developments in N=4 SYM to compute structure constants. We use perturbation theory to obtain new results that can be tested against this new conjecture. Moreover we use integrability based methods to constrain correlation function of protected operators.

    • We compute the perturbative partition functions for gauge theories with eight supersymmetries on spheres of dimension d <= 5, proving a conjecture by the second author. We apply similar methods to gauge theories with four supersymmetries on spheres with d <= 3. The results are valid for non-integer d as well. We further propose an analytic continuation from d = 3 to d = 4 that gives the perturbative partition function for an N = 1 gauge theory. The results are consistent with the free multiplets and the one-loop beta-functions for general N = 1 gauge theories. We also consider the analytic continuation of an N = 1 preserving mass deformation of the maximally supersymmetric gauge theory and compare to recent holographic results for N = 1* super Yang-Mills. We find that the general structure for the real part of the free energy coming from the analytic continuation is consistent with the holographic results.

  • Results in Localization for Supersymmetric Gauge Theories
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The strong coupling dynamics of Quantum Field Theories with gauge symmetries constitutes a profound problem in Theoretical Physics. Supersymmetric theories offer rare instances where this elusive problem is tractable and can be a valuable source of information and intuition. One of the most powerful approaches available for this purpose is supersymmetric localization. In this thesis, we employ this technique to study many facets of supersymmetric theories. After a brief theoretical introduction to the basic concepts that make an appearance in this thesis, we begin with a localization computation for supersymmetric gauges theories on spheres of variable dimension, with eight and four supersymmetries, proving an earlier conjecture. We also analytically continue our results to get a partition function for the four-dimensional N=1 theory, and perform various consistency checks. Then, we consider a special case of these theories, namely two-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory, and we study the matrix model that arises from its localization. We analyze the theory in the limit of large gauge group rank using numerical and analytical tools and connect it to previous related results from the literature. Next, we turn our attention to N=2 gauge theories with matter. We construct the theories on a general class of four-dimensional manifolds, ensuring that they are globally well-defined. Then, we reformulate them using twisted variables and perform localization on the resulting cohomological theory. Lastly, we study N=2 theories on another four-dimensional manifold, namely a product of a three-dimensional hyperbolic space and a circle, with the goal of finding infinite-dimensional chiral algebras. To pursue this goal, we once again employ a localization technique and find evidence of this structure in two cases.

In addition to extending previously known one-loop results to the full SU(2|2)2 S-matrix we calculate the two-loop correction to the dispersion relation and then compute the complete two-loop S-matrix. The result of the perturbative calculation can be compared with the appropriate limit of the conjectured S-matrix for the full theory and complete agreement is found.

    • We consider anomaly cancellation for SU(N) x SU(2) x U(1) gauge theories where the left-handed chiral multiplets are in higher SU(2) representations. In particular, if the left-handed quarks and leptons transform under the triplet representation of SU(2) and if the U(1) gauge group is compact then up to an overall scaling there is only one possible nontrivial assignment for the hypercharges if N = 3, and two if N = 9. Otherwise there are infinitely many. We use the Mordell-Weil theorem, Mazur's theorem and the Cremona elliptic curve database which uses Kolyvagin's theorem on the Birch Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture to prove these statements.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics A. - : IOP Publishing. - 1751-8113 .- 1751-8121. ; 46:35, s. 355401-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the relation between 5D super Yang-Mills theory and the holographic description of 6D (2, 0) superconformal theory. We start by clarifying some issues related to the localization of N = 1 SYM with matter on S-5. We concentrate on the case of a single wadjoint hypermultiplet with a mass term and argue that the theory has a symmetry enlargement at mass M = 1/(2r), where r is the S-5 radius. However, in order to have a well-defined localization locus it is necessary to rotate M onto the imaginary axis, breaking the enlarged symmetry. Based on our prescription, the imaginary mass values are physical and we show how the localized path integral is consistent with earlier results for 5D SYM in flat space. We then compute the free energy and the expectation value for a circular Wilson loop in the large N limit. The Wilson loop calculation shows a mass dependent constant rescaling between weak and strong coupling. The Wilson loop continued back to to the enlarged symmetry point is consistent with a supergravity computation for an M2 brane using the standard identification of the compactification radius and the 5D coupling. If we continue back to the physical regime and use this value of the mass to determine the compactification radius, then we find agreement between the SYM free energy and the corresponding supergravity calculation. We also verify numerically some of our analytic approximations.

In this paper we give detailed descriptions of this calculation and the computation of the four-loop wrapping corrections for a length four operator in the 20 of SU(4), the R-symmetry group for these theories. • 2021
  • Ingår i: SciPost Physics. - : Stichting SciPost. - 2542-4653. ; 10:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the free energy of four-dimensional CFTs on deformed spheres. For generic nonsupersymmetric CFTs only the coefficient of the logarithmic divergence in the free energy is physical, which is an extremum for the round sphere. We then specialize to N = 2 SCFTs where one can preserve some supersymmetry on a compact manifold by turning on appropriate background fields. For deformations of the round sphere the c anomaly receives corrections proportional to the supersymmetric completion of the (Weyl)(2) term, which we determine up to one constant by analyzing the scale dependence of various correlators in the stress-tensor multiplet. We further show that the double derivative of the free energy with respect to the marginal couplings is proportional to the two-point function of the bottom components of the marginal chiral multiplet placed at the two poles of the deformed sphere. We then use anomaly considerations and counter-terms to parametrize the finite part of the free energy which makes manifest its dependence on the Kahler potential. We demonstrate these results for a theory with a vector multiplet and a massless adjoint hypermultiplet using results from localization. Finally, by choosing a special value of the hypermultiplet mass where the free energy is independent of the deformation, we derive an infinite number of constraints between various integrated correlators in N = 4 super Yang-Mills with any gauge group and at all values of the coupling, extending previous results.

Our results are valid for the Hofman-Maldacena fundamental giant magnons as well as their dyonic generalizations. The energy corrections turn out to be surprisingly simple, especially if all the magnons are fundamental, and at leading order are independent of the magnon flavors. We also show how to use the Bethe ansatz to find finite size corrections for dyonic giant magnons with large R-charges.

    • We consider supersymmetric gauge theories on S5 with a negative Yang-Mills coupling in their large N limits. Using localization we compute the partition functions and show that the pure SU(N) gauge theory descends to an SU(N/2)+N/2 × SU(N/2)−N/2 × SU(2) Chern-Simons gauge theory as the inverse ’t Hooft coupling is taken to negative infinity for N even. The Yang-Mills coupling of the SU(N/2)±N/2 is positive and infinite, while that on the SU(2) goes to zero. We also show that the odd N case has somewhat different behavior. We then study the SU(N/2)N/2 pure Chern-Simons theory. While the eigenvalue density is only found numerically, we show that its width equals 1 in units of the inverse sphere radius, which allows us to find the leading correction to the free energy when turning on the Yang-Mills term. We then consider USp(2N) theories with an antisymmetric hypermultiplet and Nf < 8 fundamental hypermultiplets and carry out a similar analysis. Along the way we show that the one-instanton contribution to the partition function remains exponentially suppressed at negative coupling for the SU(N) theories in the large N limit.

    • We determine the scalar part of the four-loop chiral dilatation operator for Leigh-Strassler deformations of N = 4 super Yang-Mills. This is sufficient to find the four-loop anomalous dimensions for operators in closed scalar subsectors. This includes the SU(2) subsector of the (complex) beta-deformation, where we explicitly compute the anomalous dimension for operators with a single impurity. It also includes the '3-string null' operators of the cubic Leigh-Strassler deformation. Our four-loop results show that the rational part of the anomalous dimension is consistent with a conjecture made in Minahan (2011 J. High Energy Phys. JHEP12(2011)093) based on the three-loop result of Sieg (2011 Phys. Rev. D 84 045014) and the N = 4 magnon dispersion relation. Here, we find additional zeta (3) terms.

The gauge coupling and mass terms for the scalar fields depend on the polar angle away from the north pole. Assuming finite coupling on the north pole, this leads to zero coupling at the south pole for d>4 and infinite coupling at the south pole for d<4. The underlying supersymmetry algebra of these theories is shown to be isomorphic to the Poincaré superalgebra in d-dimensions. The approach follows Pestun's method of dimensionally reducing from 10 dimensional super Yang-Mills. The resulting theories have a reduced R-symmetry which includes an SU(1,1) subgroup, except in four dimensions where, because of conformal invariance, the full flat-space R-symmetry is maintained, and in seven dimensions where SU(1, 1) is the flat-space R-symmetry. For the case of S-6 and S-7 we discuss the localization of these theories and also present new results for the corresponding matrix models. The matrix models for S-6 and S-7 are qualitatively similar to the matrix models of a vector multiplet on S-4 and S-5 respectively. We also discuss the contributions of instantons in the six and seven dimensional cases.

    • The ABJM model is a superconformal Chern-Simons theory with N = 6 supersymmetry which is believed to be integrable in the planar limit. However, there is a coupling-dependent function that appears in the magnon dispersion relation and the asymptotic Bethe ansatz that is only known to leading order at strong and weak coupling. We compute this function to four loops in perturbation theory by an explicit Feynman diagram calculation for both the ABJM model and the ABJ extension. The ABJM four-loop correction has mixed transcendentality, while the ABJ extension adds a term to the ABJM correction with highest transcendentality. We then compute the four-loop wrapping correction for a scalar operator in the 20 representation of SU (4) and find that it agrees with a recent prediction of the ABJM Y-system by Gromov, Kazakov and Vieira. We also propose a limit of the ABJ model that might be perturbatively integrable at all loop orders but has a short range Hamiltonian.

    • In this contribution to the issue on localization in gauge theories we investigate the matrix models derived from localizing N = 1 super Yang-Mills on S-5. We consider the large-N limit and attempt to solve the matrix model by a saddlepoint approximation. In general it is not possible to find an analytic solution, but at the weak and the strong limits of the 't Hooft coupling there are dramatic simplifications that allows us to extract most of the interesting information. At weak coupling we show that the matrix model is close to the Gaussian matrix model and that the free-energy scales as N-2. At strong coupling we show that if the theory contains one adjoint hypermultiplet then the free-energy scales as N-3. We also find the expectation value of a supersymmetric Wilson loop that wraps the equator. We demonstrate how to extract the effective couplings and reproduce results of Seiberg. Finally, we compare to results for the sixdimensional (2,0) theory derived using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that by choosing the hypermultiplet mass such that the supersymmetry is enhanced to N = 2, the Wilson loop result matches the analogous calculation using AdS/CFT. The free-energies differ by a rational fraction.

We also show that the partition functions for N = 1 8- and 9-dimensional theories are consistent with their known flat space limits.

    • We compute loop corrections in p-adic open string field theory. We argue that quantum effects induce a pole with m^2 ~ - ln g for the open string field at the locally stable vacuum. We also compute the one loop effective potential and show that the potential develops an imaginary piece when the field becomes tachyonic.

    • In this chapter of Review of AdS/CFT Integrability we introduce N = 4 Super Yang-Mills. We discuss the global superalagebra PSU(2, 2|4) and its action on gauge invariant operators. We then discuss the computation of the correlators of certain gauge invariant operators, the so-called single trace operators in the large N limit. We show that interactions in the gauge theory lead to mixing of the operators. We compute this mixing at the one-loop level and show that the problem maps to a one-dimensional spin chain with nearest neighbor interactions. For operators in the SU(2) sector we show that the spin chain is the ferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain whose eigenvalues are determined by the Bethe equations.

    • We consider the partition function for Euclidean SU(N) super Yang-Mills on a squashed seven-sphere. We show that the localization locus of the partition function has instanton membrane solutions wrapping the six "fixed" three-spheres on the S7. The ADHM vari-ables of these instantons are fields living on the membrane world volume. We compute their contribution by localizing the resulting three-dimensional supersymmetric field theory. In the round-sphere limit the individual instanton contributions are singular, but the singularities cancel when adding the contributions of all six three-spheres. The full partition function on the S7 is well-defined even when the square of the effective Yang -Mills coupling is negative. We show for an SU(2) gauge theory in this regime that the bare negative tension of the instanton membranes is canceled off by contributions from the instanton partition function, indicating the existence of tensionless membranes. We provide evidence that this phase is distinct from the usual weakly coupled super Yang -Mills and, in fact, is gravitational.

    • We consider mass-deformed theories with N >= 2 supersymmetry on round and squashed three-spheres. By embedding the supersymmetric backgrounds in extended supergravity we show that at special values of mass deformations the supersymmetry is enhanced on the squashed spheres. When the 3d partition function can be obtained by a limit of a 4d index we also show that for these special mass deformations only the states annihilated by extra supercharges contribute to the index. By using an equivalence between partition functions on squashed spheres and ellipsoids, we explain the recently observed squashing independence of the partition function of mass-deformed ABJ(M) theory on the ellipsoid. We provide further examples of such simplification for various 3d supersymmetric theories.

    • We discuss supergraphs and their relation to "chiral functions" in N = 4 Super Yang-Mills. Based on the magnon dispersion relation and an explicit three-loop result of Sieg's we make an all loop conjecture for the rational contributions of certain classes of supergraphs. We then apply superspace techniques to the "cubic" branch of Leigh-Strassler N = 1 superconformal theories. We show that there are order 2(L)/L single trace operators of length L which have zero anomalous dimensions to all loop order in the planar limit. We then compute the anomalous dimensions for another class of single trace operators we call one-pair states. Using the conjecture we can find a simple expression for the rational part of the anomalous dimension which we argue is valid at least up to and including five-loop order. Based on an explicit computation we can compute the anomalous dimension for these operators to four loops.

    • We study the anomalous dimensions for scalar operators for a three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory recently proposed in arXiv:0806.1218. We show that the mixing matrix at two-loop order is that for an integrable Hamiltonian of an SU(4) spin chain with sites alternating between the fundamental and the anti-fundamental representations. We find a set of Bethe equations from which the anomalous dimensions can be determined and give a proposal for the Bethe equations to the full superconformal group of OSp(2,2 vertical bar 6).

    • In the large N limit of N=4 Super Yang-Mills, the mixing under dilatations of the SU(2) sector, single trace operators composed of L complex scalar fields of two types, is closed to all orders in perturbation theory. By relying on the AdS/CFT correspondence, and by examining the currents for semiclassical strings, we present evidence which implies that there are small mixings that contradict the closure of the SU(2) sector in the strong coupling limit. These mixings first appear to second order in the \lambda/L^2 expansion.

    • This paper has two parts. We first compute the leading contribution to the strong-coupling mixing between the Konishi operator and a double-trace operator composed of chiral primaries by using flat-space vertex operators for the string-duals of the operators. We then compute the three-point functions for protected or unprotected scalar operators with higher spin operators on the leading Regge trajectory. Here we see that the nontrivial spatial structures required by conformal invariance arise naturally from the form of the polarization tensors in the vertex operators. We find agreement with recent results extracted from Mellin amplitudes for four-point functions, as well as with earlier supergravity calculations. We also obtain some new results for other combinations of operators.

    • We consider two-loop anomalous dimensions for fermionic operators in the ABJM model and the ABJ model. We find the appropriate Hamiltonian and show that it is consistent with a previously predicted Bethe ansatz for the ABJM model. The difference between the ABJ and ABJM models is invisible at the two-loop level due to cancelation of parity violating diagrams. We then construct a Hamiltonian for the full two-loop OSp(6|4) spin chain by first constructing the Hamiltonian for an SL(2|1) subgroup, and then lifting to OSp(6|4). We show that this Hamiltonian is consistent with the Hamiltonian found for the fermionic operators.

    • We explicitly construct the eight fermion zero mode solutions for the Hofman-Maldacena giant magnon. The solutions are naturally gauge fixed under the κ-symmetry. Substituting the solutions back into the Lagrangian leads to a simple expression that can be quantized directly. We also show how to construct the SU(2|2) × SU(2|2) superalgebra from these zero modes. For completeness we also find the four bosonic zero mode solutions.
