  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Velocity-resolved Reverberation Mapping of Five Bright Seyfert 1 Galaxies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 866:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first results from a reverberation-mapping campaign undertaken during the first half of 2012, with additional data on one active galactic nucleus (AGN) (NGC 3227) from a 2014 campaign. Our main goals are (1) to determine the black hole masses from continuum-H beta reverberation signatures, and (2) to look for velocity-dependent time delays that might be indicators of the gross kinematics of the broad-line region. We successfully measure H beta time delays and black hole masses for five AGNs, four of which have previous reverberation mass measurements. The values measured here are in agreement with earlier estimates, though there is some intrinsic scatter beyond the formal measurement errors. We observe velocity-dependent H beta lags in each case, and find that the patterns have changed in the intervening five years for three AGNs that were also observed in 2007.

  • The Dementias Platform UK (DPUK) Data Portal
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European journal of epidemiology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7284 .- 0393-2990. ; 35:6, s. 601-611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Dementias Platform UK Data Portal is a data repository facilitating access to data for 3 370 929 individuals in 42 cohorts. The Data Portal is an end-to-end data management solution providing a secure, fully auditable, remote access environment for the analysis of cohort data. All projects utilising the data are by default collaborations with the cohort research teams generating the data. The Data Portal uses UK Secure eResearch Platform infrastructure to provide three core utilities: data discovery, access, and analysis. These are delivered using a 7 layered architecture comprising: data ingestion, data curation, platform interoperability, data discovery, access brokerage, data analysis and knowledge preservation. Automated, streamlined, and standardised procedures reduce the administrative burden for all stakeholders, particularly for requests involving multiple independent datasets, where a single request may be forwarded to multiple data controllers. Researchers are provided with their own secure ‘lab’ using VMware which is accessed using two factor authentication. Over the last 2 years, 160 project proposals involving 579 individual cohort data access requests were received. These were received from 268 applicants spanning 72 institutions (56 academic, 13 commercial, 3 government) in 16 countries with 84 requests involving multiple cohorts. Projects are varied including multi-modal, machine learning, and Mendelian randomisation analyses. Data access is usually free at point of use although a small number of cohorts require a data access fee.

  • Controlled Growth of the Self-Modulation of a Relativistic Proton Bunch in Plasma
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Accelerators and Beams. - : American Physical Society. - 2469-9888. ; 25:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A long, narrow, relativistic charged particle bunch propagating in plasma is subject to the self -modulation (SM) instability. We show that SM of a proton bunch can be seeded by the wakefields driven by a preceding electron bunch. SM timing reproducibility and control are at the level of a small fraction of the modulation period. With this seeding method, we independently control the amplitude of the seed wakefields with the charge of the electron bunch and the growth rate of SM with the charge of the proton bunch. Seeding leads to larger growth of the wakefields than in the instability case.

  • Neuroimaging of tissue microstructure as a marker of neurodegeneration in the AT(N) framework: defining abnormal neurodegeneration and improving prediction of clinical status
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer's Research & Therapy. - 1758-9193. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundAlzheimer's disease involves accumulating amyloid (A) and tau (T) pathology, and progressive neurodegeneration (N), leading to the development of the AD clinical syndrome. While several markers of N have been proposed, efforts to define normal vs. abnormal neurodegeneration based on neuroimaging have been limited. Sensitive markers that may account for or predict cognitive dysfunction for individuals in early disease stages are critical.MethodsParticipants (n = 296) defined on A and T status and spanning the AD-clinical continuum underwent multi-shell diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to generate Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging (NODDI) metrics, which were tested as markers of N. To better define N, we developed age- and sex-adjusted robust z-score values to quantify normal and AD-associated (abnormal) neurodegeneration in both cortical gray matter and subcortical white matter regions of interest. We used general logistic regression with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) analysis to test whether NODDI metrics improved diagnostic accuracy compared to models that only relied on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) A and T status (alone and in combination).ResultsUsing internal robust norms, we found that NODDI metrics correlate with worsening cognitive status and that NODDI captures early, AD neurodegenerative pathology in the gray matter of cognitively unimpaired, but A/T biomarker-positive, individuals. NODDI metrics utilized together with A and T status improved diagnostic prediction accuracy of AD clinical status, compared with models using CSF A and T status alone.ConclusionUsing a robust norms approach, we show that abnormal AD-related neurodegeneration can be detected among cognitively unimpaired individuals. Metrics derived from diffusion-weighted imaging are potential sensitive markers of N and could be considered for trial enrichment and as outcomes in clinical trials. However, given the small sample sizes, the exploratory nature of the work must be acknowledged.

  • Betatron x-ray radiation from laser-plasma accelerators driven by femtosecond and picosecond laser systems
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7674 .- 1070-664X. ; 25:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comparative experimental study of betatron x-ray radiation from laser wakefield acceleration in the blowout and self-modulated regimes is presented. Our experiments use picosecond duration laser pulses up to 150 J (self-modulated regime) and 60 fs duration laser pulses up to 10 J (blowout regime), for plasmas with electronic densities on the order of 1019cm-3. In the self-modulated regime, where betatron radiation has been very little studied compared to the blowout regime, electrons accelerated in the wake of the laser pulse are subject to both the longitudinal plasma and transverse laser electrical fields. As a result, their motion within the wake is relatively complex; consequently, the experimental and theoretical properties of the x-ray source based on self-modulation differ from the blowout regime of laser wakefield acceleration. In our experimental configuration, electrons accelerated up to about 250 MeV and betatron x-ray spectra with critical energies of about 10-20 keV and photon fluxes between 108and 1010photons/eV Sr are reported. Our experiments open the prospect of using betatron x-ray radiation for applications, and the source is competitive with current x-ray backlighting methods on multi-kilojoule laser systems.

  • Coulomb excitation of a Am-242 isomeric target: E2 and E3 strengths, rotational alignment, and collective enhancement
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 82:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A 98% pure Am-242m ( K = 5(-), t(1/2) = 141 years) isomeric target was Coulomb excited with a 170.5-MeV Ar-40 beam. The selectivity of Coulomb excitation, coupled with the sensitivity of Gammasphere plus CHICO, was sufficient to identify 46 new states up to spin 18h in at least four rotational bands; 11 of these new states lie in the isomer band, 13 in a previously unknown yrast K-pi = 6(-) rotational band, and 13 in a band tentatively identified as the predicted yrast K-pi = 5(+) band. The rotational bands based on the K-pi = 5- isomer and the 6(-) bandhead were populated by Coulomb excitation with unexpectedly equal cross sections. The gamma-ray yields are reproduced by Coulomb excitation calculations using a two-particle plus rotor model (PRM), implying nearly complete Delta K = 1 mixing of the two almost-degenerate rotational bands, but recovering the Alaga rule for the unperturbed states. The degeneracy of the 5(-) and 6(-) bands allows for precise determination of the mixing interaction strength V, which approaches the strong-mixing limit; this agrees with the 50% attenuation of the Coriolis matrix element assumed in the model calculations. The fractional admixture of the I-K(pi) = 6(6)(-) state in the nominal 6(5)(-) isomer band state is measured within the PRM as 45.6(-1.1)(+0.3)%. The E2 and M1 strengths coupling the 5(-) and 6(-) bands are enhanced significantly by the mixing, while E1 and E2 couplings to other low-K bands are not measurably enhanced. The yields of the 5(+) band are reproduced by an E3 strength of approximate to 15 W.u., competitive with the interband E2 strength. Alignments of the identified two-particle Nilsson states in Am-242 are compared with the single-particle alignments in Am-241.

  • Coherent quantum dynamics of excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE. - 0277-786X .- 1996-756X. - 9781628419818 ; 9746
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered considerable interest in recent years owing to their layer thickness-dependent optoelectronic properties. In monolayer TMDs, the large carrier effective masses, strong quantum confinement, and reduced dielectric screening lead to pronounced exciton resonances with remarkably large binding energies and coupled spin and valley degrees of freedom (valley excitons). Coherent control of valley excitons for atomically thin optoelectronics and valleytronics requires understanding and quantifying sources of exciton decoherence. In this work, we reveal how exciton-exciton and exciton-phonon scattering influence the coherent quantum dynamics of valley excitons in monolayer TMDs, specifically tungsten diselenide (WSe2), using two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Excitation-density and temperature dependent measurements of the homogeneous linewidth (inversely proportional to the optical coherence time) reveal that exciton-exciton and exciton-phonon interactions are significantly stronger compared to quasi-2D quantum wells and 3D bulk materials. The residual homogeneous linewidth extrapolated to zero excitation density and temperature is 1:6 meV (equivalent to a coherence time of 0.4 ps), which is limited only by the population recombination lifetime in this sample. • Intrinsic homogeneous linewidth and broadening mechanisms of excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 6, s. Art. no. 8315-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The band-edge optical response of transition metal dichalcogenides, an emerging class of atomically thin semiconductors, is dominated by tightly bound excitons localized at the corners of the Brillouin zone (valley excitons). A fundamental yet unknown property of valley excitons in these materials is the intrinsic homogeneous linewidth, which reflects irreversible quantum dissipation arising from system (exciton) and bath (vacuum and other quasiparticles) interactions and determines the timescale during which excitons can be coherently manipulated. Here we use optical two-dimensional Fourier transform spectroscopy to measure the exciton homogeneous linewidth in monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe 2). The homogeneous linewidth is found to be nearly two orders of magnitude narrower than the inhomogeneous width at low temperatures. We evaluate quantitatively the role of exciton-exciton and exciton-phonon interactions and population relaxation as linewidth broadening mechanisms. The key insights reported here - strong many-body effects and intrinsically rapid radiative recombination - are expected to be ubiquitous in atomically thin semiconductors.

  • Associations between diffusion MRI microstructure and cerebrospinal fluid markers of Alzheimer's disease pathology and neurodegeneration along the Alzheimer's disease continuum.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer's & dementia (Amsterdam, Netherlands). - : Wiley. - 2352-8729. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • White matter (WM) degeneration is a critical component of early Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) models, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI), and mean apparent propagator MRI (MAP-MRI), have the potential to identify early neurodegenerative WM changes associated with AD.We imaged 213 (198 cognitively unimpaired) aging adults with DWI and used tract-based spatial statistics to compare 15 DWI metrics of WM microstructure to 9 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers of AD pathology and neurodegeneration treated as continuous variables. We found widespread WM injury in AD, as indexed by robust associations between DWI metrics and CSF biomarkers. MAP-MRI had more spatially diffuse relationships with Aβ42/40 and pTau, compared with NODDI and DTI.Our results suggest that WM degeneration may be more pervasive in AD than is commonly appreciated and that innovative DWI models such as MAP-MRI may provide clinically viable biomarkers of AD-related neurodegeneration in the earliest stages of AD progression.

  • Performance of scintillating waveguides for CCD-based X-ray detectors
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 53:1, s. 3-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scintillating films are usually used to improve the sensitivity of CCD-based X-ray imaging detectors. For an optimal spatial resolution and detection efficiency, a tradeoff has to be made on the film thickness. However, these scintillating layers can also be structured to provide a pixellated screen. In this paper, the study of CsI(TI)-filled pore arrays is reported. The pores are first etched in silicon, then oxidized and finally filled with CsI(TI) to form scintillating waveguides. The dependence of the detector sensitivity on pore depth, varied from 40 to 400 mu m here, follows rather well theoretical predictions. Most of the detectors produced in this work have a detective quantum efficiency of the incoming X-ray photons of about 25%. However, one detector shows that higher efficiency can be achieved approaching almost the theoretical limit set by Poisson statistics of the incoming X-rays. Thus, we conclude that it is possible to fabricate scintillating waveguides with almost ideal performance. Imaging capabilities of the detectors are demonstrated.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Neutron Crystallography in Structural Biology. - : Elsevier. - 1557-7988 .- 0076-6879. ; 634, s. 21-46
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of neutron protein crystallography (NPX) is expanding rapidly, with most structures determined in the last decade. This growth is stimulated by a number of developments, spanning from the building of new NPX beamlines to the availability of improved software for structure refinement. The main bottleneck preventing structural biologists from adding NPX to the suite of methods commonly used is the large volume of the individual crystals required for a successful experiment. A survey of deposited NPX structures in the Protein Data Bank shows that about two-thirds came from crystals prepared using vapor diffusion, while batch and dialysis-based methods all-together contribute to most of the remaining one-third. This chapter explains the underlying principles of these protein crystallization methods and provides practical examples that may help others to successfully prepare large crystals for NPX.

  • Multiple Pleistocene refugia for Arctic Bell-Heather revealed with genomic analyses of modern and historic plants
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biogeography. - 0305-0270 .- 1365-2699.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: Arctic plants survived the Pleistocene glaciations in unglaciated refugia. The number, ages, and locations of these refugia are often unclear. We use high-resolution genomic data from present-day and Little-Ice-Age populations of Arctic Bell-Heather to re-evaluate the biogeography of this species and determine whether it had multiple independent refugia or a single refugium in Beringia. Location: Circumpolar Arctic and Coastal British Columbia (BC) alpine. Taxon: Cassiope tetragona L., subspecies saximontana and tetragona, outgroup C. mertensiana (Ericaceae). Methods: We built genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) libraries using Cassiope tetragona tissue from 36 Arctic locations, including two ~250- to 500-year-old populations collected under glacial ice on Ellesmere Island, Canada. We assembled a de novo GBS reference to call variants. Population structure, genetic diversity and demography were inferred from PCA, ADMIXTURE, fastsimcoal2, SplitsTree, and several population genomics statistics. Results: Population structure analyses identified 4–5 clusters that align with geographic locations. Nucleotide diversity was highest in Beringia and decreased eastwards across Canada. Demographic coalescent analyses dated the following splits with Alaska: BC subspecies saximontana (5 mya), Russia (~1.4 mya), Europe (>200–600 kya), and Greenland (~60 kya). Northern Canada populations appear to have formed during the current interglacial (7–9 kya). Admixture analyses show genetic variants from Alaska appear more frequently in present-day than historic plants on Ellesmere Island. Conclusions: Population and demographic analyses support BC, Alaska, Russia, Europe and Greenland as all having had independent Pleistocene refugia. Northern Canadian populations appear to be founded during the current interglacial with genetic contributions from Alaska, Europe and Greenland. We found evidence, on Ellesmere Island, for continued recent gene flow in the last 250–500 years. These results suggest that a re-analysis of other Arctic species with shallow population structure using higher resolution genomic markers and demographic analyses may help reveal deeper structure and other circumpolar glacial refugia.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 130, s. 361-374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fundamental insights into the mechanism of breakaway oxidation in Fe9Cr1Mo steel are deduced, through advanced characterisation and modelling. Degradation at 600 °C/∼42 bar CO2 for ∼20,000 h is emphasised: conditions relevant to components such as the finned superheater tubes used for advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactors. It is shown that such conditions are sufficient to cause carbon saturation of the metallic substrate, as confirmed by direct observation of extensive carbide precipitation but also numerical analysis of the carbon transport. Thus the observation of graphite precipitation close to the scale/metal interface is rationalised. Nonetheless, the activity of carbon at the scale/metal interface does not reach unity – with respect to graphite – at time zero. A modelling method is proposed which accounts for this kinetic retardation of the attack; this can be used to interpolate across the regimes within which breakaway oxidation is prevalent. It is a plausible model for extrapolation to the lower temperatures relevant to service conditions and is suitable for lifetime estimation – so-called ‘remnant life analysis’ – of such safety-critical components when prone to this form of attack.

  • Prospects for membrane protein crystals in NMX
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Neutron Crystallography in Structural Biology. - : Elsevier. - 1557-7988 .- 0076-6879. ; 634, s. 47-68
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adding hydrogen atoms and protonation states to structures of membrane proteins requires successful implementation of neutron macromolecular crystallography (NMX). This information would significantly increase our fundamental understanding of the transport processes membrane proteins undertake. To grow the large crystals needed for NMX studies requires significant amounts of stable protein, but once that challenge is overcome there is no intrinsic property of membrane proteins preventing the growth of large crystals per se. The calcium-transporting P-type ATPase (SERCA) has been thoroughly characterized biochemically and structurally over decades. We have extended our crystallization efforts to assess the feasibility of growing SERCA crystals for NMX—exploring microdialysis and capillary counterdiffusion crystallization techniques as alternatives to the traditional vapor diffusion crystallization experiment. Both methods possess crystallization dynamics favorable for maximizing crystal size and we used them to facilitate the growth of large crystals, validating these approaches for membrane protein crystallization for NMX.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently there has been growing interest in the role of coherence in electronic dynamics. Coherent multidimensional spectroscopy has been used to reveal coherent phenomena in numerous material systems. Here we utilize a recent implementation of coherent multidimensional spectroscopy-two-dimensional photocurrent spectroscopy-in which we detect the photocurrent from a PbS quantum dot photocell resulting from its interactions with a sequence of four ultrafast laser pulses. We observe sub-picosecond evolution of two-dimensional spectra consistent with multiple exciton generation. Moreover, a comparison with two-dimensional fluorescence spectra of the quantum dots demonstrates the potential of two-dimensional photocurrent spectroscopy to elucidate detailed origins of photocurrent generating electronic state coherence pathways. Since the measurement is based on detecting the photocell current in situ, the method is well suited to study the fundamental ultrafast processes that affect the function of the device. This opens new avenues to investigate and implement coherent optimization strategies directly within devices.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-9606 .- 1089-7690. ; 157:16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on carbon monoxide desorption and oxidation induced by 400 nm femtosecond laser excitation on the O/Ru(0001) surface probed by time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (TR-XAS) at the carbon K-edge. The experiments were performed under constant background pressures of CO (6 × 10−8 Torr) and O2 (3 × 10−8 Torr). Under these conditions, we detect two transient CO species with narrow 2π* peaks, suggesting little 2π* interaction with the surface. Based on polarization measurements, we find that these two species have opposing orientations: (1) CO favoring a more perpendicular orientation and (2) CO favoring a more parallel orientation with respect to the surface. We also directly detect gas-phase CO2 using a mass spectrometer and observe weak signatures of bent adsorbed CO2 at slightly higher x-ray energies than the 2π* region. These results are compared to previously reported TR-XAS results at the O K-edge, where the CO background pressure was three times lower (2 × 10−8 Torr) while maintaining the same O2 pressure. At the lower CO pressure, in the CO 2π* region, we observed adsorbed CO and a distribution of OC–O bond lengths close to the CO oxidation transition state, with little indication of gas-like CO. The shift toward “gas-like” CO species may be explained by the higher CO exposure, which blocks O adsorption, decreasing O coverage and increasing CO coverage. These effects decrease the CO desorption barrier through dipole–dipole interaction while simultaneously increasing the CO oxidation barrier.

    • This chapter aims to give an overview of the process of interactive model building in macromolecular neutron crystallography for the researcher transitioning from X-ray crystallography alone. The two most popular programs for refinement and model building, phenix.refine and Coot, respectively, are used as examples, and familiarity with the programs is assumed. Some work-arounds currently required for proper communication between the programs are described. We also discuss the appearance of nuclear density maps and how this differs from that of electron density maps. Advice is given to facilitate deposition of jointly refined neutron/X-ray structures in the Protein Data Bank.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology. - 0169-3816 .- 1573-0719. ; 12:4, s. 299-316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study seeks to comparatively examine how autonomy is evaluated by a sample of nursing staff in both Sweden and Florida, USA. In both cultures support for patient autonomy was generally greater from an individual point of view than from the anticipated institutional perspective. Comparisons between the cultures revealed that individual staff members in the Swedish nursing homes generally gave higher priority to patient preference than did their American counterparts. On the other hand, support for patient preference was generally greater in the American nursing homes in regard to institutionally anticipated decision. There were statistically significant mean value differences between Swedish nursing staff's personal opinion and anticipated institutional decisions in five of six case studies. Nursing staff's personal opinion showed a stronger support for patient's preferences. There was a statistically significant mean value difference between American nursing staffs' personal opinion and anticipated institutional decisions in only one of the six case studies. In spite of cultural differences the reported results to some degree reflect a common value-system regarding both the anticipated institutional perspective and nursing staffs' personal opinion.

    • A co-ordinated series of field experiments were conducted to consider the effects of elevated UV-B radiation applied directly to decomposing plant litter. Betula pubescens was decomposed under ambient and elevated UV-B (simulating a 15% ozone depletion) using outdoor irradiation facilities at Adventdalen, Norway (78° N), Abisko, Sweden (68° N), Amsterdam, The Netherlands (52° N,) and Patras, Greece (38° N). There was no significant effect of treatment on mass loss for samples collected after 2, 12 and 14 months decomposition at Amsterdam, or after 4 months decomposition at Adventdalen. Significant reductions in the mass loss of litter decomposing under elevated UV-B compared to ambient were found at the other 2 sites. The only effect of treatment on litter chemistry during decomposition was a significant reduction in the N concentration of material at Abisko and a significant increase in C:N at Patras for litter decomposing under elevated UV-B. Significant differences were found in the structure of the fungal community decomposing litter in Sweden, the only site to be tested. These data, and the few published studies of the response of decomposition to UV-B incident on litter suggest that, in the ecosystems and climates that have been studied, such direct effects are typically confined to the initial stages of decomposition, and are rather small in magnitude.

  • Intraindividual hormonal variability in ultrasonographically timed successive ovulatory menstrual cycles is detected only in the luteal phase in infertility patients
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics. - 1058-0468. ; 19:8, s. 7-363
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To assess intraindividual variation of follicle stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, estradiol, progesterone, inhibin A, and inhibin B in three successive ovulatory cycles correlated with transvaginal ultrasound monitored morphological changes in the ovary.METHODS: Serial transvaginal color and pulsed Doppler ultrasound and serum hormone analysis were performed during midfollicular, periovulatory, and midluteal phase for three consecutive cycles in 19 patients with normal menstrual cycles.RESULTS: Luteinising hormone and progesterone showed significant differences in the midluteal phase between the 1st and 2nd cycle (luteinising hormone p = 0.007 and progesterone p = 0.02). Progesterone showed a similar significant change (p = 0.013) between the 2nd and 3rd cycle. No significant differences were seen in the midfollicular or periovulatory phases or between the 1st and 3rd cycle.CONCLUSIONS: Luteal phase progesterone and luteinising hormone concentrations showed individual variation in successive cycles suggesting early or late corpus luteolysis. Follicular and periovulatory hormone levels were similar in subsequent ovulatory cycles.

  • Carotid plaque-RADS : a novel stroke risk classification system
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JACC Cardiovascular Imaging. - : Elsevier. - 1936-878X .- 1876-7591. ; 17:1, s. 62-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Carotid artery atherosclerosis is highly prevalent in the general population and is a well-established risk factor for acute ischemic stroke. Although the morphological characteristics of vulnerable plaques are well recognized, there is a lack of consensus in reporting and interpreting carotid plaque features. Objectives: The aim of this document is to establish a consistent and comprehensive approach for imaging and reporting carotid plaque by introducing the Plaque–Reporting and Data System (RADS) score. Methods: A panel of experts recognized the necessity to develop a classification system for carotid plaque and its defining characteristics. Using a multimodality analysis approach, the Plaque-RADS categories were established through consensus, drawing on existing published reports. Results: The authors present a universal classification that is applicable to both researchers and clinicians. The Plaque-RADS score offers a morphological assessment in addition to the prevailing quantitative parameter of “stenosis.” The Plaque-RADS score spans from grade 1 (indicating complete absence of plaque) to grade 4 (representing complicated plaque). Accompanying visual examples are included to facilitate a clear understanding of the Plaque-RADS categories. Conclusions: Plaque-RADS is a standardized and reliable system of reporting carotid plaque composition and morphology via different imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. This scoring system has the potential to help in the precise identification of patients who may benefit from exclusive medical intervention and those who require alternative treatments, thereby enhancing patient care. A standardized lexicon and structured reporting promise to enhance communication between radiologists, referring clinicians, and scientists.

  • Self-assembly and surface behaviour of pure and mixed zwitterionic amphiphiles in a deep eutectic solvent
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Soft Matter. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1744-683X .- 1744-6848. ; 14:26, s. 5525-5536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent investigations have shown that deep eutectic solvents provide a suitable environment for self-organisation of biomolecules, in particular phospholipids and proteins. However, the solvation of complex lyophilic moieties by deep eutectic solvents still remains unclear. Here we explore the behaviour of zwitterionic surfactants in choline chloride:glycerol eutectic mixture. Dodecyl-2-(trimethylammonio)ethylphosphate and N-alkyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (alkyl = dodecyl, tetradecyl) surfactants were investigated by means of surface tension, X-ray reflectivity and small-angle neutron scattering. These surfactants were found to remain surface active and form globular micelles in deep eutectic solvents. Still, the surface behaviour of these species was found to differ depending on the headgroup and tail structure. The morphology of the micelles also slightly varies between surfactants, demonstrating differences in the packing of individual monomers. The characteristics of mixtures of the dodecyl surfactants is also reported, showing a deviation from ideal mixing associated with attractive interactions between sulfobetaine and phosphocholine headgroups. Such non-ideality results in variation of the surface behaviour and self-assembly of these surfactant mixtures. The results presented here will potentially lead to the development of new alternatives for drug-delivery, protein solubilisation and biosensing through a better fundamental understanding of the behaviour of zwitterionic surfactants in deep eutectic solvents.

  • Thermal-Mechanical Fatigue Behaviour of a New Single Crystal Superalloy : Effects of Si and Re Alloying
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 95, s. 456-467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mechanical behaviour of a new single crystal superalloy suitable for power generation applications is considered. Effects of alloying with either Si or Re are elucidated. Out-of-phase thermal-mechanical fatigue is emphasised, although to clarify the effects arising some static creep deformation tests are also carried out. A significant Si-effect is found: a modest addition of 0.25 wt. % Si increases the TMF life by a factor of 2. Thinner deformation bands which traverse the γ'-phase are promoted by Si alloying, with a concomitant greater resistance to recrystallization and cracking along them. Alloying with Re, whilst improving the creep behaviour more markedly than Si, does not have such a strong effect on TMF life. The results provide insights into the composition/performance relationships relevant to the TMF performance of single crystal superalloys.

  • Global subterranean estuaries modify groundwater nutrient loading to the ocean
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Limnology And Oceanography Letters. - 2378-2242.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Terrestrial groundwater travels through subterranean estuaries before reaching the sea. Groundwater-derived nutrients drive coastal water quality, primary production, and eutrophication. We determined how dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) are transformed within subterranean estuaries and estimated submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) nutrient loads compiling > 10,000 groundwater samples from 216 sites worldwide. Nutrients exhibited complex, nonconservative behavior in subterranean estuaries. Fresh groundwater DIN and DIP are usually produced, and DON is consumed during transport. Median total SGD (saline and fresh) fluxes globally were 5.4, 2.6, and 0.18 Tmol yr−1 for DIN, DON, and DIP, respectively. Despite large natural variability, total SGD fluxes likely exceed global riverine nutrient export. Fresh SGD is a small source of new nutrients, but saline SGD is an important source of mostly recycled nutrients. Nutrients exported via SGD via subterranean estuaries are critical to coastal biogeochemistry and a significant nutrient source to the oceans.
