  • Exome sequencing reveals genetic heterogeneity and clinically actionable findings in children with cerebral palsy
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: NATURE MEDICINE. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 30, s. 1395-1405
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability in children. To ascertain the role of major genetic variants in the etiology of CP, we conducted exome sequencing on a large-scale cohort with clinical manifestations of CP. The study cohort comprised 505 girls and 1,073 boys. Utilizing the current gold standard in genetic diagnostics, 387 of these 1,578 children (24.5%) received genetic diagnoses. We identified 412 pathogenic and likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants across 219 genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, and 59 P/LP copy number variants. The genetic diagnostic rate of children with CP labeled at birth with perinatal asphyxia was higher than the rate in children without asphyxia (P = 0.0033). Also, 33 children with CP manifestations (8.5%, 33 of 387) had findings that were clinically actionable. These results highlight the need for early genetic testing in children with CP, especially those with risk factors like perinatal asphyxia, to enable evidence-based medical decision-making. Using exome sequencing data from one of the largest cohorts of children with cerebral palsy, the genetic diagnostic rates of single-nucleotide and copy number variants were assessed and a sizeable fraction found to be clinically actionable.

  • Photoemission Enhancement of Plasmonic Hot Electrons by Au Antenna-Sensitizer Complexes
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - 1936-086X .- 1936-0851. ; 18:4, s. 3397-3404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photoemission of surface plasmon decay-produced hot electrons is usually of very low efficiencies, hindering the practical utilization of such nonequilibrium charge carriers in harvesting photons with less energy than the semiconductor band gap for more efficient solar energy collection and photodetection. However, it has been demonstrated that the photoemission efficiency of small metal clusters increases as the particle size decreases. Recent studies have also shown that the photoemission efficiency of surface plasmon-yielded hot carriers can be intrinsically improved through proper material construction. In this paper, we report that the photoemission efficiency of hot electrons on the Au nanodisk-cluster complex/TiO2 interface can be dramatically enhanced under optical nanoantenna-sensitizer design. Such an enhancement is dominantly attributed to three factors. First, the large plasmonic nanodisk antennas provide a significantly enhanced optical near field, which largely increases light absorption in the small Au clusters that are acting as hot electron injection sensitizers. Second, the sub-3 nm size of the Au clusters facilitates the collection of delocalized spreading charges by the semiconductor. Third, the hybrid interface and molecule-like energy level of the Au cluster result in a much longer lifetime of excited electrons. Our results provide a promising approach for the effective harvesting of solar energy with plasmonic antenna-sensitizer complexes.

  • Can we predict real-time fMRI neurofeedback learning success from pretraining brain activity?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Human Brain Mapping. - : Wiley. - 1065-9471 .- 1097-0193. ; 41:14, s. 3839-3854
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neurofeedback training has been shown to influence behavior in healthy participants as well as to alleviate clinical symptoms in neurological, psychosomatic, and psychiatric patient populations. However, many real-time fMRI neurofeedback studies report large inter-individual differences in learning success. The factors that cause this vast variability between participants remain unknown and their identification could enhance treatment success. Thus, here we employed a meta-analytic approach including data from 24 different neurofeedback studies with a total of 401 participants, including 140 patients, to determine whether levels of activity in target brain regions during pretraining functional localizer or no-feedback runs (i.e., self-regulation in the absence of neurofeedback) could predict neurofeedback learning success. We observed a slightly positive correlation between pretraining activity levels during a functional localizer run and neurofeedback learning success, but we were not able to identify common brain-based success predictors across our diverse cohort of studies. Therefore, advances need to be made in finding robust models and measures of general neurofeedback learning, and in increasing the current study database to allow for investigating further factors that might influence neurofeedback learning.

  • Predictors of real-time fMRI neurofeedback performance and improvement - A machine learning mega-analysis.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: NeuroImage. - : Elsevier. - 1053-8119 .- 1095-9572. ; 237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Real-time fMRI neurofeedback is an increasingly popular neuroimaging technique that allows an individual to gain control over his/her own brain signals, which can lead to improvements in behavior in healthy participants as well as to improvements of clinical symptoms in patient populations. However, a considerably large ratio of participants undergoing neurofeedback training do not learn to control their own brain signals and, consequently, do not benefit from neurofeedback interventions, which limits clinical efficacy of neurofeedback interventions. As neurofeedback success varies between studies and participants, it is important to identify factors that might influence neurofeedback success. Here, for the first time, we employed a big data machine learning approach to investigate the influence of 20 different design-specific (e.g. activity vs. connectivity feedback), region of interest-specific (e.g. cortical vs. subcortical) and subject-specific factors (e.g. age) on neurofeedback performance and improvement in 608 participants from 28 independent experiments. With a classification accuracy of 60% (considerably different from chance level), we identified two factors that significantly influenced neurofeedback performance: Both the inclusion of a pre-training no-feedback run before neurofeedback training and neurofeedback training of patients as compared to healthy participants were associated with better neurofeedback performance. The positive effect of pre-training no-feedback runs on neurofeedback performance might be due to the familiarization of participants with the neurofeedback setup and the mental imagery task before neurofeedback training runs. Better performance of patients as compared to healthy participants might be driven by higher motivation of patients, higher ranges for the regulation of dysfunctional brain signals, or a more extensive piloting of clinical experimental paradigms. Due to the large heterogeneity of our dataset, these findings likely generalize across neurofeedback studies, thus providing guidance for designing more efficient neurofeedback studies specifically for improving clinical neurofeedback-based interventions. To facilitate the development of data-driven recommendations for specific design details and subpopulations the field would benefit from stronger engagement in open science research practices and data sharing.

  • Tailoring magnetic order via atomically stacking 3d/5d electrons to achieve high-performance spintronic devices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Reviews. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 1931-9401. ; 7:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ability to tune magnetic orders, such as magnetic anisotropy and topological spin texture, is desired to achieve high-performance spintronic devices. A recent strategy has been to employ interfacial engineering techniques, such as the introduction of spin-correlated interfacial coupling, to tailor magnetic orders and achieve novel magnetic properties. We chose a unique polar-nonpolar LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice because Mn (3d)/Ir (5d) oxides exhibit rich magnetic behaviors and strong spin-orbit coupling through the entanglement of their 3d and 5d electrons. Through magnetization and magnetotransport measurements, we found that the magnetic order is interface-dominated as the superlattice period is decreased. We were able to then effectively modify the magnetization, tilt of the ferromagnetic easy axis, and symmetry transition of the anisotropic magnetoresistance of the LaMnO3/SrIrO3 superlattice by introducing additional Mn (3d) and Ir (5d) interfaces. Further investigations using in-depth first-principles calculations and numerical simulations revealed that these magnetic behaviors could be understood by the 3d/5d electron correlation and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The results reported here demonstrate a new route to synchronously engineer magnetic properties through the atomic stacking of different electrons, which would contribute to future applications in high-capacity storage devices and advanced computing.

  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Fungal diversity. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1560-2745 .- 1878-9129. ; 67:1, s. 21-125

    • Many fungi are pathogenic on plants and cause significant damage in agriculture and forestry. They are also part of the natural ecosystem and may play a role in regulating plant numbers/density. Morphological identification and analysis of plant pathogenic fungi, while important, is often hampered by the scarcity of discriminatory taxonomic characters and the endophytic or inconspicuous nature of these fungi. Molecular (DNA sequence) data for plant pathogenic fungi have emerged as key information for diagnostic and classification studies, although hampered in part by non-standard laboratory practices and analytical methods. To facilitate current and future research, this study provides phylogenetic synopses for 25 groups of plant pathogenic fungi in the Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mucormycotina (Fungi), and Oomycota, using recent molecular data, up-to-date names, and the latest taxonomic insights. Lineage-specific laboratory protocols together with advice on their application, as well as general observations, are also provided. We hope to maintain updated backbone trees of these fungal lineages over time and to publish them jointly as new data emerge. Researchers of plant pathogenic fungi not covered by the present study are invited to join this future effort. Bipolaris, Botryosphaeriaceae, Botryosphaeria, Botrytis, Choanephora, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Diaporthe, Diplodia, Dothiorella, Fusarium, Gilbertella, Lasiodiplodia, Mucor, Neofusicoccum, Pestalotiopsis, Phyllosticta, Phytophthora, Puccinia, Pyrenophora, Pythium, Rhizopus, Stagonosporopsis, Ustilago and Verticillium are dealt with in this paper.

  • Scheduling Parallel Real-Time Tasks on Virtual Processors
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. - : IEEE. - 1045-9219 .- 1558-2183. ; 34:1, s. 33-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In many popular parallel programming models, e.g., OpenMP (OpenMP, 2013), applications are usually dispatched into several dedicated scheduling entities (named "threads " in common) for which the processor time of physical platform is provided through the OS schedulers. This behavior requires for a hierarchical scheduling framework, considering each thread as a virtual processor (VP). Moreover, hierarchical scheduling allow separate applications to execute together on a common hardware platform, with each application having the "illusion " of executing on a dedicated component. However, the problem for scheduling parallel real-time tasks on virtual multiprocessor platform has not been addressed yet. An analogous approach to virtual scheduling for parallel real-time tasks is federeted scheudling, where each task exclusively executes on a set of dedicated physical processors. However, federated scheduling suffers significant resource wasting. In this article, we study the scheduling of real-time parallel task on virtual multiprocessors. As a physical processor is shared by virtual processors, tasks effectively share processors with each other. We conduct comprehensive performance evaluation to compare our proposed approach with existing methods of different types. Experiment results show that our approach consistently outperforms existing methods to a considerable extent under a wide range of parameter settings.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Botanica Marina. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0006-8055 .- 1437-4323. ; 63:2, s. 155-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper documents six new saprobic marine fungi and one new genus based on morphology and multi-gene phylogenies. Three Dothideomycetes, and members of the Pleosporales, are introduced: Pseudo-massariosphaeria triseptata sp. nov. was recognized as a mangrove species in Amniculicolaceae, and Salsuginea phoenicis sp. nov. was discovered as a second member of Salsugineaceae. A new genus Raghukumaria with Raghukumaria keshaphalae sp. nov., recovered from mangroves, is phylogenetically sister to Halomassarina and nests in the Trematosphaeriaceae. Three new species are referred to the Sordariomycetes: Coniochaeta marina (Coniochaetales, Coniochaetaceae) on driftwood; Fusicolla bharatavarshae (Hypocreales, Nectriaceae) is introduced with asexual and sexual morphs, on decayed mangrove wood of Avicennia marina; and Fusarium sedimenticola (Hypocreales, Nectriaceae) is new to the Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) from deep-sea sediment.

  • Aligning silver nanowire films with cellulose nanocrystal nematics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Optical Materials Express. - : The Optical Society. - 2159-3930. ; 11:10, s. 3321-3331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anisotropic plasmonic films are a desirable material for many optoelectronic ap-plications. Here, we propose a method to align silver nanowires (AgNWs) with the help of uniaxial nematic alignment of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) liquid crystals (LCs) that can preserve their LC orientation in solid film. AgNWs are doped into uniaxial nematic CNC LCs, where AgNWs are oriented parallel to the director of shear-aligned CNCs without aggregation. The AgNWs orientations are determined by polarized optical and dark field microscopic images. The alignment of AgNWs is characterized by the scalar order parameter S , and the measured S around 0.59 for aligned AgNWs presents an improved anisotropy with the assistance of uniaxial nematic CNC LCs. The electrical property of aligned AgNWs is examined by the four-probe method and exhibits the maximum ratio of anisotropic sheet resistance around 5, consistent with the simulated percolation probability performance using the Monte Carlo computation. Our results show that the uniaxial nematic CNC LCs can act as an effective template in aligning AgNWs, which is compatible with 3D printing and microfluidics, and allows for the preparation of low-cost, innovative optical materials and devices.

  • In situ growth of perovskite stacking layers for high-efficiency carbon-based hole conductor free perovskite solar cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 7:22, s. 13777-13786
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interfacial properties between a perovskite layer and carbon electrode are critical for the photovoltaic performance of carbon electrode-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a methylammonium lead mixed halide (MAPbIxBr3−x) perovskite layer is in situ grown on the top of a methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite layer forming a MAPbI3/MAPbIxBr3−x perovskite stacking structure (PSS) to improve the interfacial properties at the perovskite/carbon electrode interface. The charge carrier dynamics in both the perovskite and the PSC device induced by the MAPbIxBr3−x perovskite stacking layer are studied using extensive characterization. The charge interfacial recombination at the perovskite/carbon electrode interface is significantly diminished using the PSS within the PSC, resulting in largely improved charge extraction and therefore high photovoltaic performance. The PSS-based PSC shows a power conversion efficiency of up to 16.2% (increased by 43% compared with that of a conventional MAPbI3-based PSC), which is among the highest efficiencies of carbon electrode-based hole conductor free PSCs. Meanwhile, the PSS-based PSC also exhibits good stability under both continuous illumination and storage under dark conditions. This work may provide a new avenue to fine tune the interfacial properties of carbon electrode-based PSCs for further improving their photovoltaic performance.

  • Effects of orifice on pressure difference in pilot-control globe valve by experimental and numerical methods
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-3487 .- 0360-3199. ; 41:41, s. 18562-18570
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pilot-Control Globe Valve (PCGV) can utilize pressure difference caused by fluid flow through the orifice on valve core as its power, for open and close the main valve with a small pilot valve. It has obvious advantages of energy conservation and quick response. Orifice structure on the valve core is the main component to determine the pressure difference, which is used to push the valve core. In this paper, the numerical model with User Defined Functions (UDFs) method is carried out, and the experimental device is arranged. The numerical and experimental results of valve core displacements achieve agreements. Then, analysis of pressure difference under different static pressures, inlet velocities and different orifice diameters are carried out. It shows that pressure difference has no relationship with static pressure, thus PCGV can be adopted in hydrogen pipelines. Meanwhile, higher inlet velocity can turn out larger pressure difference with quicker response of PCGV. In addition, there exits an unbalanced moment, and 15 mm is the extreme diameter of the orifice for DN150 PCGV. Finally, the design method of the orifice structure in PCGV is proposed with design formulas. This work can help the precise design work of PCGV, and it can be referred by other researchers who are also deal with orifice structures in similar valves design work.

  • Improve the roles of nature reserves in conservation of endangered pheasant in a highly urbanized region
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nature reserves play an extraordinarily important role in conserving animal populations and their habitats. However, landscape change and unreasonable zoning designations often render these protected areas inadequate. Therefore, regular evaluation of the efficacy of protected lands is critical for maintaining and improving management strategies. Using species distribution models and GAP analysis, we assessed the changes in suitable habitat for the Brown Eared-pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum) in two Chinese nature reserves between 1995 and 2013. Our results showed that the habitat suitability of Brown Eared-pheasant has changed dramatically during this period, and fragmentation analyses showed an increase in concentration area and decrease in patch area. In particular, our findings show that the national nature reserves need to adjust their ranges to ensure the conservation of this flagship species. Our study further provides a new viewpoint for evaluating the efficacy of protected lands, particularly in highly urbanized regions where conservation goals must be balanced with changing landscapes.

  • On the Volume Calculation for Conditional DAG Tasks : Hardness and Algorithms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2020 DESIGN, AUTOMATION & TEST IN EUROPE CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION (DATE 2020). - NEW YORK, USA. - 9783981926347 ; , s. 204-209
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hardness of analyzing conditional directed acyclic graph (DAG) tasks remains unknown so far. For example, previous researches asserted that the conditional DAG's volume can be solved in polynomial time. However, these researches all assume well-nested structures that are recursively composed by single-source-single-sink parallel and conditional components. For conditional DAGs in general that do not comply with this assumption, the hardness and algorithms of volume computation are still open. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to show that previous work cannot provide a safe upper bound of the conditional DAG's volume in general. Moreover, we prove that the volume computation problem for conditional DAGs is strongly NP-hard. Finally, we propose an exact algorithm for computing the conditional DAG's volume. Experiments show that our method can significantly improve the accuracy of the conditional DAG's volume estimation.

  • Multi-Functional Desaturases in Two Spodoptera Moths with ∆11 and ∆12 Desaturation Activities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Ecology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0098-0331 .- 1573-1561. ; 45:4, s. 378-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, uses (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate as the major component of its sex pheromone. Previous isotope-labeling experiments demonstrated an unusual ∆12 desaturase activity involved in the biosynthesis of this compound; however, the putative ∆12 desaturase gene has not been reported to date. In the present study, we confirmed this ∆12 desaturation pathway by in vivo labeling experiments, and characterized candidate desaturase genes in a yeast heterologous expression system. We demonstrated that a pheromone gland-specific desaturase, SexiDes5, uses palmitic acid and the subsequently chain-shortened product (Z)-9-tetradecenoic acid as substrates to produce (Z)-11-hexadecenoic and (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienoic acids, respectively. In addition, the homologous desaturase SlitDes5 from the congeneric Spodoptera litura had analogous functions.

  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IEEE Photonics Journal. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1943-0655. ; 16:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-powered photodetectors which operate without external power sources hold immense promise in future photodetection systems. To achieve high-performance self-powered optoelectronic devices, efficient electron-hole pair separation is critical to generate high photocurrents. In this work, we successfully synthesized semiconducting graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with a direct bandgap of 1.80 eV and employed them to construct a high-performance GNR/Al2O3/IGZO heterostructure photodetector. The built-in electric field in the heterojunctions enables this photodetector to exhibit remarkable performance, showing a responsivity of up to 68 mA/W, a detectivity of 8.34 x 1010 Jones, and rapid response times of 21/20 ms at zero bias. Furthermore, the photodetector features a wide spectral detection range of 405 to 1550 nm. These results highlight the promising potential of GNR/IGZO p-n heterojunction-based self-powered photodetectors in optoelectronic applications.
