  • The Role of Scientists and Clinicians in Raising Public Support for Animal Research in Reproductive Biology and Medicine.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Biology of reproduction. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1529-7268 .- 0006-3363.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is important that researchers active in reproductive animal research, as a group, clearly and compassionately convey specific information to students, patients, and the general public on the merit and need for biomedical research using various formats and seek active support from patient organizations, universities, politicians, celebrities, the media, and international professional organizations related to human and animal health.

  • Chromium speciation in natural waters using serially connected supported liquid membranes.
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Talanta. - 1873-3573. ; 48:5, s. 1121-1132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A supported liquid membrane (SLM) method for the speciation of chromium has been developed. The method is based on selective extraction and enrichment of anionic Cr(VI) and cationic Cr(III) species in two serially connected SLM units. Methyltricaprylammonium chloride (Aliquat) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA), respectively were used as the selective extractants in the membrane liquid. Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS) was utilised for final determination. Optimised conditions for the DEHPA membrane were, sample solution at pH 3, acceptor solution 0.1 M HNO(3) and 10% w/w carrier in kerosene. The corresponding values for the Aliquat membrane were pH 7, 0.75 M HNO(3) and 6% w/w carrier in di-n-hexylether. This gave extraction efficiencies for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) of 90 and 40%, respectively. The method was used to measure the concentration of Cr III and Cr VI in surface water from an abandoned tannery site. Storage experiments at different pH showed that preservation at neutral pH gave almost constant values over a period of one month. At acidic pH (pH=3.0) the concentration of Cr(VI) decreased rapidly while the concentration of Cr(III) increased. The detection limit, expressed as three times the standard deviation of enriched blank samples was 0.01 mug l(-1).

  • Soft and sour : The challenge of setting environmental quality standards for bioavailable metal concentration in Fennoscandinavian freshwaters
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1462-9011 .- 1873-6416. ; 54, s. 210-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires member states to ensure that all inland and coastal waters achieve 'good' water quality status. To this end, the WFD has set environmental quality standards (EQS) or Water quality criteria (WQC) for priority pollutants that include the four metals Cd, Ni, Pb and Hg. Many states have also chosen to set EQS for Cu and Zn. The use of bioavailability models to set EQS, paves the way for accepting higher local metal concentrations in waters where metal bioavailability is deemed low. The Biotic Ligand Model (BLM) concept has been proposed as a tool for estimating metal bioavailability and for calculating local EQS in the EU guidance document. The BLM estimates metal bioavailability based on the dissolved metal concentration and key ancillary water chemistry parameters (acidity, hardness and organic carbon content). The BLMs developed so far, have only been validated for water chemistry input parameters typical of Central Europe. However, the pH, alkalinity and dissolved organic carbon levels of a significant fraction of Fennoscandinavian (Finland, Norway and Sweden) freshwaters are outside the calibration range of currently available BLMs. The levels of Ca2+, alkalinity and pH in 75%, 29% and 22%, respectively, of the ca. 2500 Fennoscandinavian freshwater bodies investigated in this survey were outside the calibration range of tested BLMs. Moreover, a comparison of the ability of the tested BLMs to predict the acute and chronic copper toxicity to Daphnia magma and Rainbow trout indicated that the BLMs should be used with caution outside their current validation range. We conclude that more work is needed to extend the application of BLMs in the practical risk assessment to encompass a broader range of European freshwater bodies.

  • Exploring the composition and structure of milk and meat value chains, food safety risks and governance in the Addis Ababa and Oromia regions of Ethiopia
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2571-581X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Demand for animal-source foods (ASF) is increasing globally, driven by population growth and changing dietary preferences. In global south countries, low compliance with good agricultural practices (GAPs) and food safety standards in the production of ASF is a major public health concern due to the high prevalence of foodborne diseases. This study examines the composition and structure of milk and meat value chains and explores food safety risks and governance in the Addis Ababa and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. Stakeholder discussions, key informant interviews and participant observation were undertaken to collect data on milk and meat value chain actors' perceptions of opportunities and constraints to improving access to safe, high-quality milk and meat products. The results reveal low compliance with rules and standards by milk and meat value chain actors which could compromise food safety and quality and expose consumers to public health risks. There was stricter enforcement of GAPs and food safety standards in the case of milk and meat products destined for export compared to products sold in the local market. The main barriers to compliance with food safety regulations were actors' low knowledge, small profit margins, absence of critical food safety infrastructure such as electricity and road and low access to capital to invest in the recommended equipment such as aluminum containers, coolers and fridges. This paper concludes there is a need for targeted efforts to support the adoption of low-cost technologies that could mitigate food safety risks. Additionally, there is a need for improved communication and tailored training for value chain actors that reflect local social, cultural and economic context to incentivise compliance with rules governing food safety and quality.
