  • Development of Robust Metal-Supported SOFCs and Stack Components in EU METSAPP Consortium

    • The potential of MS-SOFCs was demonstrated through the previous EU METSOFC project, which concluded that the development of oxidation resistant novel metal-supported solid oxide fule cell (MS-SOFC) design and stack is the requirement to advance this technology to the next level. The following EU METSAPP project has been executed with an overall aim of developing advanced metal-supported cells and stacks based on a robust, reliable and up-scalable technology. During the project, oxidation resistant nanostructured anodes based on modified SrTiO3 were developed and integrated into MS-SOFCs to enhance their robustness. In addition, the manufacturing of metal-supported cells with different geometries, scalability of the manufacturing process was demonstrated and more than 200 cells with an area of approximate to 150 cm(2) were produced. The electrochemical performance of different cell generations was evaluated and best performance and stability combination was observed with doped SrTiO3 based anode designs. Furthermore, numerical models to understand the corrosion behavior of the MS-SOFCs were developed and validated. Finally, the cost effective concept of coated metal interconnects was developed, which resulted in 90% reduction in Cr evaporation, three times lower Cr2O3 scale thickness and increased lifetime. The possibility of assembling these cells into two radically different stack designs was demonstrated.

    • There is increasing research interest in nanocellulose aerogels because they have low density, hierarchical structure and they are biodegradable and biocompatible. Typically, aerogels are made by supercritical drying, freeze drying and vacuum drying. This work will report the effects that different drying methods have on textural properties of aerogels.

  • High-Temperature Structural and Electrical Characterization of Reduced Oxygen-Deficient Ruddlesden-Popper Nickelates

    • High-temperature characterization of oxygen-deficient Sr-rich (La1-xSrx)(2)NiO4-delta (x = 0.5-0.8) solid solutions under mildly reducing conditions with p(O-2) approximate to 5x10(-5) atm was performed by employing structural and thermal analysis, TEM, and electrical conductivity measurements. Oxygen losses from the crystal lattice on reduction were found to result in a reversible transition from the tetragonal (I4/mmm) to the orthorhombic (Immm) structure and shrinkage of the crystal lattice for the compositions with x > 0.5. TEM and thermogravimetric analysis evidenced slow kinetics of the structural transition. The increase in oxygen deficiency under reducing conditions is accompanied by localization of the electronic charge carriers, a drop of the p-type electronic conductivity, and a transition from metallic-like to semiconducting behavior. The extent of changes in oxygen nonstoichiometry, unit--cell dimensions, average Ni oxidation state, electron-hole concentration, and electronic conductivity on reduction is interrelated with the strontium content. The results suggest that the electrical conductivity of (La1-xSrx)(2)NiO4-delta ceramics depends mainly on the average Ni oxidation state.

  • Processing and mechanical properties of novel wood fibre composites foams

    • Wood fibre reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite foams have been successfully produced using supercritical carbon dioxide. A significant increase of specific properties, both stiffness and strength, was achieved by adding 5-10 wt% wood fibres. The experimental stiffness was comparable with a superposed micromechanical model for a three phase fibre reinforced foam. These first results on the integration of wood fibres into cellular PLA polymer are very encouraging.
