  • Esports, Higher Ed. and Young People with Disabilities
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Esports is a wide spread cultural phenomenon in the 21stcentury. It is a dominant youth cultural expression in many countries, from east to west, and the industry’s revenues increases exponentially each year. In 2018 the sum for that, only in the US, was $100 millions. Piggybacking on the sport phenomenon, at least nominally, it differs greatly from its elder sibling as to some decisive (arguably paradoxical) aspects: Its capitalist preconditions, its fundamental grassroots and community culture, and its conspicuous lack of, or inconsistencies regarding formalization, regulation and organization. In connection to this, and which this paper will delve into, another area in which esports hasn’t been thoroughly established is Higher education. There are numerous instances of how esports and Higher education have begun to mire during the last two decades. However, there is no comprehensive discussion yet on the conditions and arguments for their fusion based on the values it could create, supplementing the literature of how to meet the needs of the industry. Firstly, we will make a brief scan of its analogue counterpart sport to see how that phenomenon and cultural practice has fared in combination with Higher education. Secondly, we will look into the examples of how esport and Higher education have begun to mire by a state of the art review of the literature, and also the suggestions which relations they still might and ought to develop. Thirdly, we will discuss education in relation to the terminology and metaphors used to comprehend the whole phenomenon of esport scholarly. Here, concepts like ecosystem, industry, ecology, party, community, and culture will be focused. This terminological discussion is crucial for a sustainable relation between Higher education and esport and thus to secure a sustainable existence for esport in general. We suggest that, contrary to what have been case before, higher education should be regarded as a part of the esport ecosystem. The paper is concluded with some remarks and what the combination of education and esport has displayed, what it could develop into, and, perhaps what it shouldn’t do and become. This discussion is based the examples of collabaration with esports actors at Halmstad University, such as esports federations, esports high schools, and non profit organizations focussing young people and children with disabilities.

  • Loss of Sarcomeric Scaffolding as a Common Baseline Histopathologic Lesion in Titin-Related Myopathies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Neuropathology and Experimental Neurology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1554-6578 .- 0022-3069. ; 77:12, s. 1101-1114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Titin-related myopathies are heterogeneous clinical conditions associated with mutations in TTN. To define their histopathologic boundaries and try to overcome the difficulty in assessing the pathogenic role of TTN variants, we performed a thorough morphological skeletal muscle analysis including light and electron microscopy in 23 patients with different clinical phenotypes presenting pathogenic autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive (AR) mutations located in different TTN domains. We identified a consistent pattern characterized by diverse defects in oxidative staining with prominent nuclear internalization in congenital phenotypes (AR-CM) (n=10), ±necrotic/regenerative fibers, associated with endomysial fibrosis and rimmed vacuoles (RVs) in AR early-onset Emery-Dreifuss-like (AR-ED) (n=4) and AR adult-onset distal myopathies (n=4), and cytoplasmic bodies (CBs) as predominant finding in hereditary myopathy with early respiratory failure (HMERF) patients (n=5). Ultrastructurally, the most significant abnormalities, particularly in AR-CM, were multiple narrow core lesions and/or clear small areas of disorganizations affecting one or a few sarcomeres with M-band and sometimes A-band disruption and loss of thick filaments. CBs were noted in some AR-CM and associated with RVs in HMERF and some AR-ED cases. As a whole, we described recognizable histopathological patterns and structural alterations that could point toward considering the pathogenicity of TTN mutations.

  • A multidisciplinary study of Iberian Chalcolithic dogs
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Archaeological Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-409X .- 2352-4103. ; 42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Domesticated dogs have been present in the Iberian Peninsula long before other domesticated species, back to the late Palaeolithic period. Their origin is still uncertain, but dogs were already well established during the Chalcolithic period (ca. 5000-4000 BP). This study employed a multidisciplinary approach comprising osteometric, radiographic and palaeogenomic analyses to characterize Chalcolithic Iberian Canis remains. Two Chalcolithic archaeological sites - Leceia, Oeiras, in Portugal, and El Caset ' on de la Era, Villalba de los Alcores, Valladolid, in Spain - were the main focus of this study. Osteometric and odontometric data from eleven other sites in Iberia were also included. Osteometric results show signs of phenotypic variability, likely the result of human-driven selective pressure. Dental radiographic and dental wear analyses allowed age at death estimation for four individuals (two juvenile and two adults). Three Chalcolithic Iberian dogs had their mitogenomes resequenced and the mitochondrial DNA analysis allowed to assign each individual to two of the major known haplogroups - A and C. Molecular sex infered by the chromosomeX/chromosome1 coverage ratio allowed to identify one female and two males. This study unveils some aspects of the Iberian Chalcolithic dogs: these dogs already exhibited various morphotypes whose profiles might be associated to the performance of certain tasks, as well as mitogenomes of two distinct lineages that help tracking the evolutionary paths of Iberian dogs.

  • Exploring the transformation of actorship among students at a small Swedish University : background, actorship and achievement
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Higher Education. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands. - 0018-1560 .- 1573-174X. ; 71:2, s. 289-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With an aim to better understand higher education’s potential for fostering personal development and social change, this study explores how students’ actorship in studies and civic engagement changed over time while enrolled in undergraduate programs at Halmstad University, Sweden. Additionally, it explores the relation among these students’ actorship, structural and psychosocial influences, and consequences in terms of formally obtained and self-reported achievements. Data were collected using three questionnaires in a time-step designed study, initially including 2004 students from 16 programs. Analyses revealed a trend of stable or decreasing actorship. Actorship was found to be strongly associated with gender and what programs the students attended, but not with social background factors such as parents’ education and family type. Psychosocial influences and actorship were marginally related to students’ achievements in terms of obtaining credits, but were more positively related to students’ own reports about gaining the knowledge and skills that would be useful for their future life and work. This, in combination with the students having high intentions to actively influence their future work, was interpreted as an indication of readiness to be social actors. This in turn suggests that readiness is a significant dimension in higher education, which might be further interpreted by applying theories about the Zone of Proximal Development. © 2015 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht

  • Gendered toy play as mediated action
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Psychological Science and Education. - Moscow : Moscow State University of Psychology and Education. - 1814-2052 .- 2311-7273. ; 16:2, s. 71-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text presents some analyses of 4- and 5-year-old children's video-taped play with gendered dolls and figures in a Swedish preschool setting. Based on sociocultural and semiotic theory, the analyses try to identify in what ways boys and girls play differ and how the play can be understood as mediated by the gendered character of the dolls and figures used. It was found that social and cultural gender stereotypes, represented in the dolls and figures used, were reflected in most of the play episodes that were analyzed. The boys play with figures representing masculine men were mainly instrumental and the boys identified themselves with the aggressive thematic built into the toys. Girls play with dolls representing feminine women was mainly relational as the girls were involved in inter-subjective relations with the dolls. This was found to be enabled and supported by the character of the feminine dolls themselves and their accessories. Some examples of children's strategies to overcome constraining designs of dolls were also found. © 2021. All rights reserved.

  • Labour-market orientation and approaches to studying — a study of the first Bologna Students at a Swedish Regional University
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Studies in Higher Education. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 0307-5079 .- 1470-174X. ; 42:8, s. 1545-1566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated labour-market orientations of students at a Swedish University with a dual/diverse focus on vocational/academic objectives. The aim was to investigate whether and how levels of students' labour-market orientation vary with social background, change during the study period, and are related to approaches to studying and achievements. The design was a multiple panel time-series study. Labour-market orientation was studied on the basis of locally designed questionnaires. Approaches to studying were analysed deductively in accordance with dimensions previously found by Study Process Questionnaires and inductively using a principal component analysis. Results suggest that labour-market orientations co-varied to a higher degree with the study programme than with social background. Contrary to what was hypothesized, being labour-market oriented was only moderately related to surface-oriented approaches to studying. It is suggested that future research should pay more attention to disciplinary traditions and local teacher and programme cultures in understanding developmental paths in labour-market orientation. © 2015 Society for Research into Higher Education

  • Ingår i: Locus. - Stockholm : Centrum för Barn och ungdomsvetenskap, Lärarhögskolan i Stockholm. - 1100-3197. ; :1, s. 21-31

  • Interleukin-6 receptor pathways in coronary heart disease : a collaborative meta-analysis of 82 studies
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Lancet. - New York, NY, USA : Elsevier. - 0140-6736 .- 1474-547X. ; 379:9822, s. 1205-1213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Persistent inflammation has been proposed to contribute to various stages in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Interleukin-6 receptor (IL6R) signalling propagates downstream inflammation cascades. To assess whether this pathway is causally relevant to coronary heart disease, we studied a functional genetic variant known to affect IL6R signalling. Methods: In a collaborative meta-analysis, we studied Asp358Ala (rs2228145) in IL6R in relation to a panel of conventional risk factors and inflammation biomarkers in 125 222 participants. We also compared the frequency of Asp358Ala in 51 441 patients with coronary heart disease and in 136 226 controls. To gain insight into possible mechanisms, we assessed Asp358Ala in relation to localised gene expression and to postlipopolysaccharide stimulation of interleukin 6. Findings: The minor allele frequency of Asp358Ala was 39%. Asp358Ala was not associated with lipid concentrations, blood pressure, adiposity, dysglycaemia, or smoking (p value for association per minor allele >= 0.04 for each). By contrast, for every copy of 358Ala inherited, mean concentration of IL6R increased by 34.3% (95% CI 30.4-38.2) and of interleukin 6 by 14.6% (10.7-18.4), and mean concentration of C-reactive protein was reduced by 7.5% (5.9-9.1) and of fibrinogen by 1.0% (0.7-1.3). For every copy of 358Ala inherited, risk of coronary heart disease was reduced by 3.4% (1.8-5.0). Asp358Ala was not related to IL6R mRNA levels or interleukin-6 production in monocytes. Interpretation: Large-scale human genetic and biomarker data are consistent with a causal association between IL6R-related pathways and coronary heart disease.

  • Hur studenter motiverar sina val av utbildningsprogram i högskolan : Beständig ojämlikhet
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Higher education (HE) has changed from elite to mass education (HSV 2006:26R, Leathwood & Read 2009). In the last few decades, the number of women in higher education has increased substantially in most OECD countries. Sweden ́s reform of HE in 1993 encourages university institutions to develop new degree programs (SFS 1993:100). This opened opportunities for the development of programs designed to attract women and men in equal numbers but the result was disappointing. According to a Swedish study, an increasing number of new degree programs attract almost exclusively one gender (Witt 2009, Nelson et al 2009). It is a well- established fact that technical educations are male-dominated while care-related educations are predominantly chosen by women. This paper investigates the motivations for choice reported by 620 students in 17 programs. We have categorized these motives as follows: knowledge seeking; working life orientation; shoulder responsibility for society; program design; second choice and “follow the map”. Moreover, the paper discusses how gender-segregated educational choices may affect the future opportunities of student in terms of professional careers, income development and, consequently, social standing and life styles. To study gender segregation within HE is like looking at a three dimensional picture. We can focus at different parts or images – one image shows the gender division among the students, another show the genderized division between program choices, while the third image is about the vertical gender division among teachers and researchers and their career opportunities. This paper deals with the first two.
