  • Study of nitrate complex formation with Pm, Eu, Am and Cm using a solvent extraction technique
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Radiochimica Acta. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0033-8230 .- 2193-3405. ; 92:12, s. 863-867
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The separation of actinides and lanthanides is an important question in the treatment of spent nuclear fuel in the transmutation concept. To find an efficient and well functioning separation process it is necessary to study the chemistry of the elements in the two groups in different aqueous media. The stability constants of the nitrate complex formation with Pm, Eu, Am and Cm were determined using solvent extraction. The extraction was studied using the synergistic system of 2,6-bis-(benzoxazolyl)-4-dodecyloxylpyridine and 2-bromodecanoic acid in tert-butyl benzene. As the nitrate ion concentration in the aqueous phase was increased, a decrease in separation between actinides and lanthanides was seen owing to complex formation between the different elements and the nitrate ions.

  • Genomic and drug target evaluation of 90 cardiovascular proteins in 30,931 individuals.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature metabolism. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2522-5812. ; 2:10, s. 1135-1148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Circulating proteins are vital in human health and disease and are frequently used as biomarkers for clinical decision-making or as targets for pharmacological intervention. Here, we map and replicate protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL) for 90 cardiovascular proteins in over 30,000 individuals, resulting in 451 pQTLs for 85 proteins. For each protein, we further perform pathway mapping to obtain trans-pQTL gene and regulatory designations. We substantiate these regulatory findings with orthogonal evidence for trans-pQTLs using mouse knockdown experiments (ABCA1 and TRIB1) and clinical trial results (chemokine receptors CCR2 and CCR5), with consistent regulation. Finally, we evaluate known drug targets, and suggest new target candidates or repositioning opportunities using Mendelian randomization. This identifies 11 proteins with causal evidence of involvement in human disease that have not previously been targeted, including EGF, IL-16, PAPPA, SPON1, F3, ADM, CASP-8, CHI3L1, CXCL16, GDF15 and MMP-12. Taken together, these findings demonstrate the utility of large-scale mapping of the genetics of the proteome and provide a resource for future precision studies of circulating proteins in human health.

  • Predictors of problems reported on the EQ-5D-3L dimensions among people with impaired vision in northern Portugal
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Health and Quality of Life Outcomes. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1477-7525. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background:The EQ-5D index often fails to detect the effect of ophthalmic diseases and sight loss. Investigating predictors of individual EQ-5D health dimensions might reveal the underlying reasons. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors of health dimension ratings obtained with the EQ-5D-3L from participants with impaired vision representing a spectrum of eye diseases. Methods: Observational cross-sectional study with participants recruited at four public hospitals in Portugal. Outpatients with visual acuity of 0.30 logMAR(6/12) or worse in the better-seeing eye were invited to participate. Participants completed two instruments: the EQ-5D-3L (measures participants’ perceived health-related quality-of-life) and the Massof Activity Inventory (measures visual ability–ability to perform vision-related activities). This study used logistic regression models to identify factors associated with responses to the EQ-5D-3L.Results: The study included 492 participants, mean age 63.4 years (range = 18–93), 50% females. The most common diagnosis was diabetic retinopathy (37%). The mean visual acuity in the better seeing eye was 0.65 logMAR (SD = 0.48) and the mean visual ability was 0.62 logits (SD = 2.04), the correlation between the two was r = − 0.511 (p < 0.001). Mobility and self-care were the health dimensions with the fewest problems (1% reported extreme problems), anxiety and depression the dimension with the most problems (24% reported extreme problems). ROC curve analysis showed that the EQ-5D index was a poor predictor of cases of vision impairment whilst visual ability given was a good predictor of cases of vision impairment. Visual ability was an independent predictor of the response for all dimensions, higher ability was always associated with a reduced odds of reporting problems. The odds of reporting problems were increased for females in 3 out of 5 dimensions. Comorbidities, visual acuity and age-category were predictors of the odds of reporting problems for one dimension each. Conclusions: The odds of reporting problems for the five health dimensions of the EQ-5D-3L were strongly influenced by the ability to perform vision-related activities (visual ability). The EQ-5D index showed poor performance at detecting vision impairment. These findings are informative and relevant for the clinic and for research evaluating the impact of eye diseases and disease treatments in ophthalmology.

  • Textile-Friendly Interconnection between Wearable Measurement Instrumentation and Sensorized Garments-Initial Performance Evaluation for Electrocardiogram Recordings.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 19:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interconnection between hard electronics and soft textiles remains a noteworthy challenge in regard to the mass production of textile-electronic integrated products such as sensorized garments. The current solutions for this challenge usually have problems with size, flexibility, cost, or complexity of assembly. In this paper, we present a solution with a stretchable and conductive carbon nanotube (CNT)-based paste for screen printing on a textile substrate to produce interconnectors between electronic instrumentation and a sensorized garment. The prototype connectors were evaluated via electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings using a sensorized textile with integrated textile electrodes. The ECG recordings obtained using the connectors were evaluated for signal quality and heart rate detection performance in comparison to ECG recordings obtained with standard pre-gelled Ag/AgCl electrodes and direct cable connection to the ECG amplifier. The results suggest that the ECG recordings obtained with the CNT paste connector are of equivalent quality to those recorded using a silver paste connector or a direct cable and are suitable for the purpose of heart rate detection.

  • Integration of molecular profiles in a longitudinal wellness profiling cohort.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An important aspect of precision medicine is to probe the stability in molecular profiles among healthy individuals over time. Here, we sample a longitudinal wellness cohort with 100 healthy individuals and analyze blood molecular profiles including proteomics, transcriptomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, autoantibodies andimmune cell profiling, complementedwith gut microbiota composition and routine clinical chemistry. Overall, our results show high variation between individuals across different molecular readouts, while the intra-individual baseline variation is low. The analyses show that each individual has a unique and stable plasma protein profile throughout the study period and that many individuals also show distinct profiles with regards to the other omics datasets, with strong underlying connections between the blood proteome and the clinical chemistry parameters. In conclusion, the results support an individual-based definition of health and show that comprehensive omics profiling in a longitudinal manner is a path forward for precision medicine.

  • Determining Stability Constants Using the AKUFVE Technique
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0736-6299 .- 1532-2262. ; 37:3-4, s. 213-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The AKUFVE techniques were developed by Rydberg and co-workers in the 1960s. The main aim was to be able to perform a series of liquid-liquid extraction data varying one or more parameters and at the same time achieve very pure phases. As such, this technique was later used for short-lived isotope studies in the SISAK system, but also as a standalone unit for a large number of thermodynamic studies of extraction systems both for fundamental understanding as well as more applied investigations. In this paper, the apparatus with modifications made over the decades is described. In addition, studies with stability constant determinations for the zirconium-water-acetylacetone system as well as lanthanide extraction using bromodecanoic acid are exemplified to demonstrate the potential use of the technique. The results shown clearly demonstrate the versatility and ability of the AKUFVE system.

  • Nuclear accumulation of full-length and truncated adenomatous polyposis coli protein in tumor cells depends on proliferation.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Oncogene. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0950-9232 .- 1476-5594. ; 22:38, s. 6013-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor is a nucleocytoplasmic protein. The nuclear accumulation of APC was recently found to vary depending on cell density, suggesting that putative APC function(s) in the nucleus is controlled by the establishment of cell contacts. We report here that the density-dependent redistribution of APC between nucleus and cytoplasm prevails in 6/6 thyroid and colorectal carcinoma cell lines. Moreover, mutated APC lacking known nuclear localization sequences had the similar distribution pattern as the full-length protein. APC invariably accumulated in the nuclei of Ki-67 expressing cells, but was largely cytoplasmic when cell cycle exit was induced by serum starvation or at high cell density. APC colocalized with beta-catenin in the nucleus only in one cell line (SW480). Also, APC maintained a predominantly nuclear position in early confluent states when cytoplasmic beta-catenin was recruited to newly formed adherens-like junctions. The results indicate that nuclear targeting of APC is driven by cell cycle entry rather than altered cell-cell contact. The ability of C-terminally truncated APC to accumulate in the nucleus suggests that nuclear import signals other than NLS1(APC) and NLS2(APC) are functionally important. Residual function(s) of N-terminal APC fragments in tumor cells carrying APC mutations might be beneficial to tumor growth and survival.

  • In situ laboratory sea spray production during the Marine Aerosol Production 2006 cruise on the northeastern Atlantic Ocean
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996 .- 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bubbles bursting from whitecaps are considered to be the most effective mechanism for particulate matter to be ejected into the atmosphere from the Earth's oceans. To realistically predict the climate effect of marine aerosols, global climate models require process-based understanding of particle formation from bubble bursting. During a cruise on the highly biologically active waters of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean in the summer of 2006, the submicrometer primary marine aerosol produced by a jet of seawater impinging on a seawater surface was investigated. The produced aerosol size spectra were centered on 200 nm in dry diameter and were conservative in shape throughout the cruise. The aerosol number production was negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water (r < -0.6 for particles of dry diameter D-p > 200 nm). An increased surfactant concentration as a result of biological activity affecting the oxygen saturation is thought to diminish the particle production. The lack of influence of chlorophyll on aerosol production indicates that hydrocarbons produced directly by the photosynthesis are not essential for sea spray production. The upward mixing of deeper ocean water as a result of higher wind speed appears to affect the aerosol particle production, making wind speed influence aerosol production in more ways than by increasing the amount of whitecaps. The bubble spectra produced by the jet of seawater was representative of breaking waves at open sea, and the particle number production was positively correlated with increasing bubble number concentration with a peak production of 40-50 particles per bubble.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychiatry. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-0640. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • COVID-19 shocked health and economic systems leaving millions of people without employment and safety nets. The pandemic disproportionately affects people with substance use disorders (SUDs) due to the collision between SUDs and COVID-19. Comorbidities and risk environments for SUDs are likely risk factors for COVID-19. The pandemic, in turn, diminishes resources that people with SUD need for their recovery and well-being. This article presents an interdisciplinary and international perspective on how COVID-19 and the related systemic shock impact on individuals with SUDs directly and indirectly. We highlight a need to understand SUDs as biopsychosocial disorders and use evidence-based policies to destigmatize SUDs. We recommend a suite of multi-sectorial actions and strategies to strengthen, modernize and complement addiction care systems which will become resilient and responsive to future systemic shocks similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • European earthstars in Geastraceae (Geastrales, Phallomycetidae) – a systematic approach using morphology and molecular sequence data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Systematics and Biodiversity. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1477-2000 .- 1478-0933. ; 11:4, s. 437-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Phylogenetic relationships among European earthstars were inferred using sequence data from the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed region (ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2), partial nuclear large subunit (LSU), and partial translation elongation factor 1-alpha (Tef-α). The phylogenetic analyses recovered 11 clades that correlate to 31 morphological species and species groups. A close relationship of Myriostoma coliforme and Geastrum was supported by the molecular data. The genus Radiigera was found to be polyphyletic, and the four species were recovered in different clades within Geastrum. Radiigera bushnellii, R. flexuosa, R. fuscogleba and R. taylori are therefore combined in Geastrum. One of the supported terminal clades is likely to represent an undescribed species that occurs in east central Europe. Notes on the morphology and ecology for each species are given, including a key to the 31 species of earthstars occurring in Europe.

  • Unexpected high species diversity among European stalked puffballs – a contribution to the phylogeny andtaxonomy of the genus Tulostoma (Agaricales)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: MycoKeys. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 1314-4049 .- 1314-4057. ; 21, s. 33-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A three-gene data set was generated to explore species diversity and delimitations within the stalked puffballs (Tulostoma, Agaricales) in Europe. Data on species from other parts of the world were included for comparison of species concepts and distribution ranges. Sequence data from 26 type specimens are included. The phylogenetic analyses support Tulostoma as monophyletic. Eleven major clades, 37 minor clades, and 20 single branches were recovered and found to correspond to 30 described species and 27 species without scientific names. Five species are here described as new to science: Tulostoma calcareum, T. calongei, T. eckbladii, T. grandisporum, and T. pannonicum. In total we report 26 described, and 19 undescribed, species from Europe. An epitype for T. fimbriatum with ITS sequence data is selected to fix the name. The recovered tree topology was not in congruence with the current infrageneric classification of Tulostoma, suggesting that many of the morphological characters used for segregation of taxa are plesiomorphic or homoplasious. Spore ornamentation and hyphal structure of the peridium are found to bereliable characters for delimitation of species.

  • TSH receptor signaling via cyclic AMP inhibits cell surface degradation and internalization of E-cadherin in pig thyroid epithelium.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Cellular and molecular life sciences : CMLS. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1420-682X .- 1420-9071. ; 61:14, s. 1834-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Incorporation of E-cadherin into the adherens junction is a highly regulated process required to establish firm cell-cell adhesion in most epithelia. Less is known about the mechanisms that govern the clearance of E-cadherin from the cell surface in both normal and pathological states. In this study, we found that the steady-state removal of E-cadherin in primary cultured pig thyroid cell monolayers is slow and involves intracellular degradation. Experimental abrogation of adhesion by a Ca2+ switch induces rapid cell surface proteolysis of E-cadherin. At the same time, endocytosed intact E-cadherin and newly synthesized E-cadherin accumulate in intracellular compartments that largely escape further degradation. Acute stimulation with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) or forskolin prevents all signs of accelerated E-cadherin turnover. The findings indicate that TSH receptor signaling via cyclic AMP stabilizes the assembly and retention of E-cadherin at the cell surface. This suggests a new mechanism by which TSH supports maintenance of thyroid follicular integrity.

  • Immigration Status and Substance Use Disorder-related Mortality in Sweden : A National Longitudinal Registry Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of addiction medicine. - : Wolters Kluwer. - 1932-0620 .- 1935-3227. ; 13:6, s. 483-492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: First-generation immigrants, in many countries, are healthier than their native counterparts. This study examined the association between first- and second-generation immigrant status and alcohol- or drugs other than alcohol-related (primarily opioids) mortality for those with risky substance use. Methods: A Swedish longitudinal, 2003 to 2017, registry study combined Addiction Severity Index (ASI) assessment data with mortality data (n = 15 601). Due to missing data, the analysis sample for this study was 15 012. Multivariate models tested the relationship between immigration status and drugs other than alcohol or alcohol-related mortality, controlling for demographics and the 7 ASI composite scores (CS).Results: Age, a higher ASI CS for alcohol, a lower ASI CS family and social relationship, a lower ASI CS for drug use and a higher ASI CS for health significantly predicted mortality because of alcohol-related causes. Higher ASI CS for drugs other than alcohol, employment, and health, age, male sex, and immigration status predicted drugs other than alcohol, related mortality. Individuals born in Nordic countries, excluding Sweden, were 1.76 times more likely to die of drugs other than alcohol compared with their Swedish counterparts. Individuals born outside a Nordic country (most common countries: Iran, Somalia, Iraq, Chile) were 61% less likely to die of drugs other than alcohol compared with their Swedish counterparts. Those with parents born outside Nordic countries were 54% less likely to die of drugs other than alcohol.Discussion: Research is needed on why people with risky substance use from Nordic countries (not Sweden) residing in Sweden, have higher mortality rates because of drugs other than alcohol (primarily opioids drugs other than alcohol compared with the other population groups in our study). Findings indicate that ASI CSs are strong predictors of future health problems including mortality due to alcohol and other drug-related causes.

    • © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015, 132, 42255. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Melt spinning at semi-industrial conditions of carbon black (CB) containing textiles fibers with enhanced electrical conductivity suitable for heating applications is described. A conductive compound of CB and high density polyethylene (HDPE) was incorporated into the core of bi-component fibers which had a sheath of polyamide 6 (PA6). The rheological and fiber-forming properties of a low-structured and a high-structured CB/HDPE composite were compared in terms of their conductivity. The low-structured CB gave the best trade-off between processability and final conductivity. This was discussed in terms of the strength of the resulting percolated network of carbon particles and its effect on the spin line stability during melt spinning. The conductivity was found to be further enhanced with maintained mechanical properties by an in line thermal annealing of the fibers at temperatures in the vicinity of the melting point of HDPE. By an adequate choice of CB and annealing conditions a conductivity of 1.5 S/cm of the core material was obtained. The usefulness of the fibers for heating applications was demonstrated by means of a woven fabric containing the conductive fibers in the warp direction. By applying a voltage of 48 V the surface temperature of the fabric rose from 20 to 30°C.

  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 35:3, s. 290-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article takes a new look at the crucial years in early post-war history, 1948–52, when Swedish-American security relations were established. By 1952 Sweden was firmly within the Western sphere and was considered a trusted ally in the fight against the Soviet Bloc. What had happened since 1948 that made the Swedish government go from almost pariah status to a trusted ally? Prior research has argued that this change was due to a dramatic reversal of US policy towards Sweden, and has even pointed to a very specific date for this policy change—namely February 1950. Washington, it has been said, at that time gave up its objective of getting Sweden to join the North Atlantic Treaty (NAT, which became NATO in 1951).In contrast, the article argues that it was not so much that the Americans changed their minds, as it was Sweden that gradually corrected its policy of neutrality to fit American hegemonic demands, specifically regarding its adherence to the CoCom trade embargo; a process that lasted longer than until February 1950. Moreover, it questions the assumption that getting Sweden to join the NAT was ever a US policy objective. There is simply no evidence to support it. It also makes the case for a reinterpretation of the Swedish-American security relations in the early cold war. The article places these events within the framework of hegemony theory, which in order to improve the understanding of this process.

    • This article deals with the propaganda by the United States Information Agency (USIA), and its local United States Information Service (USIS) office vis-à-vis the Swedish labor movement and the Swedish press in the 1950s and 1960s. The article investigates what kind of relationship the USIS had with Swedish labor and Swedish newspapers and argues that labor organizations and newspaper editors voluntarily acted as propaganda targets and outlets for the United States, that is, co-produced US hegemony in Sweden, by actively seeking to make the Swedish public more positive towards the United States. The USIS was generally quite successful in placing its propaganda in the newspapers and in establishing close and productive relationships with the Swedish labor organizations. The article also relates instances of resistance to the USIS' propaganda and the tactics and strategies used by the Americans to counter criticism of US policy in the labor media. The article is the first scholarly study of how the United States used Swedish labor and newspapers in the battle for the hearts and minds of the Swedish public during the cold war, as well as the first to use the concept of co-production in a Swedish context.

    • This article provides the first scholarly investigation of of the relationship between Swedish Catholicism and the totalitarian ideologies during the first half of the twentieth century. It shows that the journal viewed Communism very negatively; Nazism mostly negative, but occasionally in a positive way; Italian Fascism mostly positively; the authoritarian regimes in Spain and Portugal were portrayed in a very positive way. One tendency that was revealed by the study was that anti-Communism was in most cases combined with anti-Semitism. The journal never took a stand for, or defended, the Jews in Europe in their plight under National Socialism.

  • Cultural Propaganda as a Tool of Hegemony : The USIA in Sweden during the 1950s and 1960s
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nordic Cold War cultures. - Helsinki : Aleksanteri Institute. - 9789515100191
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with the propaganda by the United States Information Agency (USIA), and its local United States Information Service (USIS) office vis-à-vis the Swedish labor movement and the Swedish press in the 1950s and 1960s. The article investigates what kind of relationship the USIS had with Swedish labor and Swedish newspapers and argues that labor organizations and newspaper editors voluntarily acted as propaganda targets and outlets for the United States, i.e. co-produced U.S: hegemony in Sweden, by actively seeking to make the Swedish public more positive towards the U.S. The USIS was generally quite successful in placing its propaganda in the newspapers and in establishing close and productive relationships with the Swedish labor organizations. The article also relates instances of resistance to the USIS’ propaganda and the tactics and strategies used by the Americans to counter criticism of U.S. policy in labor media. The article is the first scholarly study of how the United States used Swedish labor and newspapers in the battle of the hearts and minds of the Swedish public during the Cold War, as well as the first to use the concept of co-production in a Swedish context.

  • Formalizing Dublin Core Application Profiles : description Set Profiles and Graph Constraints
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: <em>Metadata and Semantics, Post-proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Metadata and Semantics Research</em>, MTSR 2007, Corfu Island in Greece, 1-2 October 2007. Springer 2009. - Boston, MA : Springer US.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a proposed formalization of the notion of Application Profiles as used in the Dublin Core community. The formalization, called Description Set Profiles, defines syntactical constraints on metadata records conforming to the DCMI Abstract Model using an XML syntax. The mapping of this formalism to syntax-specific constraint languages such as XML Schema is discussed.

  • From Interoperability to Harmonization in Metadata Standardization : Designing an Evolvable Framework for Metadata Harmonization
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Metadata is an increasingly central tool in the current web environment, enabling large-scale, distributed management of resources. Recent years has seen a growth in interaction between previously relatively isolated metadata communities, driven by a need for cross-domain collaboration and exchange. However, metadata standards have not been able to meet the needs of interoperability between independent standardization communities. For this reason the notion of metadata harmonization, defined as interoperability of combinations of metadata specifications, has risen as a core issue for the future of web-based metadata. This thesis presents a solution-oriented analysis of current issues in metadata harmonization. A set of widely used metadata specifications in the domains of learning technology, libraries and the general web environment have been chosen as targets for the analysis, with a special focus on Dublin Core, IEEE LOM and RDF. Through active participation in several metadata standardization communities, a body of knowledge of harmonization issues has been developed. The thesis presents an analytical framework of concepts and principles for understanding the issues arising when interfacing multiple standardization communities. The analytical framework focuses on a set of important patterns in metadata specifications and their respective contribution to harmonization issues: Metadata syntaxes as a tool for metadata exchange. Syntaxes are shown to be of secondary importance in harmonization. Metadata semantics as a cornerstone for interoperability. This thesis argues that the incongruences in the interpretation of metadata descriptions play a significant role in harmonization. Abstract models for metadata as a tool for designing metadata standards. It is shown how such models are pivotal in the understanding of harmonization problems. Vocabularies as carriers of meaning in metadata. The thesis shows how portable vocabularies can carry semantics from one standard to another, enabling harmonization. Application profiles as a method for combining metadata standards. While application profiles have been put forward as a powerful tool for interoperability, the thesis concludes that they have only a marginal role to play in harmonization. The analytical framework is used to analyze and compare seven metadata specifications, and a concrete set of harmonization issues is presented. These issues are used as a basis for a metadata harmonization framework where a multitude of metadata specifications with different characteristics can coexist. The thesis concludes that the Resource Description Framework (RDF) is the only existing specification that has the right characteristics to serve as a practical basis for such a harmonization framework, and therefore must be taken into account when designing metadata specifications. Based on the harmonization framework, a best practice for metadata standardization development is developed, and a roadmap for harmonization improvements of the analyzed standards is presented.

  • Hugh Trevor-Roper and the English Editions of Hitler’s Table Talk and Testament
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of contemporary history. - : SAGE Publications. - 0022-0094 .- 1461-7250. ; 51:4, s. 788-812
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the publication of the famous ‘Hitler’s Table Talk’ and ‘The Testament of Adolf Hitler’ as well as the role of British historian Hugh Trevor-Roper in this process, including his relationship with the Swiss banker Franc ̧ois Genoud – the owner of the ‘original’ manuscripts. The article is based on research utilizing Trevor- Roper’s personal correspondence and papers; material that has never before been used to investigate this matter. Besides shedding light on many previously unknown details concerning the publication of these documents, the article shows how Trevor-Roper consistently failed to enlighten his readers about central source-critical problems con- nected to the documents he was validating. He did so on numerous occasions and through several editions of the sources, even though his personal correspondence shows that he was well aware of the problems. The article argues that Trevor-Roper chose not to reveal these problems in public so as not to upset his business relationship with Genoud so that he would gain access to further documents in Genoud’s possession.

  • Limiting Diplomatic Friction : Sweden, the United States and SKF's ball bearing exports to Eastern Europe, 1950-52
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - 0358-5522 .- 1750-2837. ; 57:3, s. 273-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with the U.S. government’s efforts to curb the Swedish ball bearing producer SKF’s exports to the East early in the Cold War, 1950-1952, and interprets this process within the framework of hegemony theory. The period up to mid-1951 saw increasing U.S. pressure upon Sweden and SKF to consent to U.S. hegemony by abiding by the CoCom embargo. To achieve its objectives U.S. policymakers developed a flexible ‘’carrot and stick’’ approach, and the article adds considerable detail regarding the U.S. government’s handling of SKF. U.S. tolerance and flexibility was dependent upon Swedish consent to American hegemony in Western Europe, which was received through the signing of the Stockholm agreement in mid-June 1951, a hegemonic apparatus through which Sweden’s abidance by the embargo was handled. A small amount of exports was accepted by Washington as long as the main U.S. objective, to deny the Eastern Bloc strategic technology, was adhered to by SKF. The article also reveals the lack of policy coordination in the Swedish government, and the conflicts between the government and SKF regarding the responsibility for adhering to the embargo.
