  • Time transfer using an asynchronous computer network: Results from three weeks of measurements
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Frequency and Time Forum, 29/5 - 1/6, Geneva, CH.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have performed a time transfer experimentbetween two atomic clocks, over a distance of approximately 75km using an 10 Gbit/s asynchronous fiber-optic computernetwork. The time transfer was accomplished through passivelistening on existing data traffic and a pilot sequence in the SDHbit stream. In order to assess the fiber-link clock comparison, wesimultaneously compared the clocks using a GPS carrier phaselink. The standard deviation of the difference between the twotime transfer links over the three-week time period was 243 ps.

  • An instructional design perspective on data-modelling for learning statistics and modelling
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Development of mathematics teaching: Design, Scale, Effects. - Umeå : Svensk förening för MatematikDidaktisk Forskning - SMDF. ; , s. 37-46, s. 37-46
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This theoretical and methodological paper discusses the emerging theoretical framing and methodological considerations in our efforts to develop a theoretical approach supporting instructional design for teaching and learning statistics and mathematical modelling. From an instructional design point of view aligned with the goals in governing curricula documents and real classroom constraints, we argue for the integration of the models and modelling perspective on teaching and learning mathematics with a data-modelling approach to facilitate students’ learning statistics and mathematical modelling. An application of the framework is given and future research discussed.

  • Molecular profiling of driver events in metastatic uveal melanoma
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metastatic uveal melanoma is less well understood than its primary counterpart, has a distinct biology compared to skin melanoma, and lacks effective treatments. Here we genomically profile metastatic tumors and infiltrating lymphocytes. BAP1 alterations are overrepresented and found in 29/32 of cases. Reintroducing a functional BAP1 allele into a deficient patient-derived cell line, reveals a broad shift towards a transcriptomic subtype previously associated with better prognosis of the primary disease. One outlier tumor has ahigh mutational burden associated with UV-damage. CDKN2A deletions also occur, which are rarely present in primaries. A focused knockdown screen is used to investigate overexpressed genesassociated withcopy number gains. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes are in several cases found tumor-reactive, but expression of the immune checkpoint receptors TIM-3, TIGIT and LAG3 is also abundant. This study represents the largest whole-genome analysis of uveal melanoma to date, and presents an updated view of the metastatic disease. © 2020, The Author(s).

  • Effects of grazing on the structure of mid-shore, intertidal assemblages on moderately exposed rocky shores of the Swedish west coast
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 212, s. 29-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A manipulative experiment was done on the Swedish west coast to test hypotheses about effects of grazing on assemblages of algae and sessile animals on moderately exposed shores. The experiments, which lasted for 15 mo, involved a total of 144 experimental units at 16 sites in 2 areas 3 km apart. Experimental treatments involved fences to exclude grazing snails, open fences to control for effects of fences, and control areas, which were not manipulated in any way. In contrast to results from moderately exposed shores in other parts of the world and in contrast to sheltered areas in the region, grazers did not appear to significantly influence the structure and composition of these assemblages. Fences and manual removal of snails were only partly successful in removing grazers. Additional observational evidence, however, supports the conclusion that grazers have a limited impact on structure and abundance of these intertidal assemblages.

  • Exploring realistic Bayesian modeling situations
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Sustainability in statistics education. - Flagstaff : ISI/IASE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study reported in the present paper is part of a larger project, which aims to explore possibilities and challenges in developing a teaching practice that supports students’ ability to model random dependent situations by a Bayesian approach. A central premise is that modeling should be based on situations that appear realistic to the students. Given this premise, the specific purpose of the present study is to identify and characterize uncertain situations that are realistic and suitable for a Bayesian treatment. The study involves reviewing some of the literature related to Bayesian applications. Based on that review we distinguish detecting (test) situations and construction composition situations as two general types of Bayesian modeling situations.

  • On the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning in modelling the chance of a natural phenomenon
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11. - Reykjavík : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims at investigating the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning when students are asked to model and predict the outcomes of a real-world situation involving uncertainty. Twelve students, aged 8-9 years, participated in an outdoor located teaching activity which called for reflection on the growing of sunflowers. Based on the analysis, and previous research, the study suggests to structure an analysis on the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning according to four analytical relationships: Deterministic model and deterministic behaviour; Deterministic model and probabilistic behaviour; Probabilistic model and deterministic behaviour; Probabilistic model and probabilistic behaviour.

  • Targeting Zfp148 activates p53 and reduces tumor initiation in the gut
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: OncoTarget. - : Impact Journals, LLC. - 1949-2553. ; 7:35, s. 56183-56192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transcription factor Zinc finger protein 148 (Zfp148, ZBP-89, BFCOL, BERF1, htβ) interacts physically with the tumor suppressor p53, but the significance of this interaction is not known. We recently showed that knockout of Zfp148 in mice leads to ectopic activation of p53 in some tissues and cultured fibroblasts, suggesting that Zfp148 represses p53 activity. Here we hypothesize that targeting Zfp148 would unleash p53 activity and protect against cancer development, and test this idea in the APCMin/+ mouse model of intestinal adenomas. Loss of one copy of Zfp148 markedly reduced tumor numbers and tumor-associated intestinal bleedings, and improved survival. Furthermore, after activation of β-catenin-the initiating event in colorectal cancer-Zfp148 deficiency activated p53 and induced apoptosis in intestinal explants of APCMin/+ mice. The anti-tumor effect of targeting Zfp148 depended on p53, as Zfp148 deficiency did not affect tumor numbers in APCMin/+ mice lacking one or both copies of Trp53. The results suggest that Zfp148 controls the fate of newly transformed intestinal tumor cells by repressing p53 and that targeting Zfp148 might be useful in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

  • Exploring spherical units as perceptual clues in enumerating 3D arrays
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Education Research Journal. - : Springer. - 1033-2170 .- 2211-050X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study continues an investigation of how spherical units, compared to cubical units, can facilitate students’ units-locating and organizing units in composites. We analyze how Norwegian grade 3 students enumerate 3D arrays with cubical and spherical units. Our results show how spherical units can act as perceptual clues that facilitate cognitive processes, underlying students’ strategies in the enumeration of 3D arrays. In particular, the results show how spherical units facilitate the units-locating process, which, in turn, supports processes of organizing-by-composites and spatial structuring of the array, in the action of developing a proper iterative strategy such as layer-based thinking.

  • Exploring units-locating in enumerating units of 3D arrays : linking units-locating to units-representation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Education Research Journal. - : Springer Nature. - 1033-2170 .- 2211-050X. ; 35:3, s. 583-605
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study is to explore strategies in enumerating units of three dimensional (3D) arrays. We analyse enumeration strategies of students in grade 3 (ages 8 to 9) in situations of cubical and spherical representations of units of 3D arrays. By exploring students’ strategies in these two situations, we find that difficulties in enumerating units in 3D arrays can be traced to difficulties in units-locating, with the consequence of applying double and triple counting. Our results also indicate that spherical units can serve as perceptual clues in units-locating and in assembling units into relevant composites. With input from our findings, we suggest research to investigate the following three hypotheses: (i) spherical units can turn students away from double and triple counting, (ii) spherical units can support students’ units-locating process and their ability to assemble units into relevant composites and (iii) teaching of enumerating 3D arrays should start with spherical units before cubical units.

  • Supply Voltage Drop Study Considering On-Chip Self Inductance of a 32-bit Processor's Power Grid
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 2009 IEEE Workshop on Signal Propagation on Interconnects, SPI '09; Strasbourg; France; 12 May 2009 through 15 May 2009. - 9781424444892
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conventional IR drop analysis suggests that on-chip inductive effects can be neglected when estimating supply voltage drops. We present a supply voltage drop analysis for a commercial 32-bit application processor. Our power grid model uses a backbone RL extracted netlist of the processor's power grid, complemented with capacitances from the processor design and a current signature defined by the worst-case switching test vector, located in the power-up sequence of the processor. Our circuit simulations show that on-chip self inductance makes the actual supply voltage drop deviate by more than 55% and 25% from the ∼6% and ∼8% drop, respectively, of nominal supply voltage that a conventional IR power grid model yields.

  • Strategies for assessing health risks from two occupational cohorts within the domain of northern Sweden
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Studies based on a cohort design requires access to both subject-specific and period-specific information. In order to conduct an occupational cohort study, access to exposure information and the possibility and permission to link information on outcomes from other registers are generally necessary. The analysis phase is also aggravated by its added complexity because of the longitudinal dimension of the cohort’s data. This thesis aims at increasing the knowledge on hazards from work on fatalities and cancer within the domain of cohort studies on miners and metal refiners and to study the complexity of the analysis by discussing and suggesting analytical strategies. Methods: The study population for this thesis consisted of a cohort of 2264 blue-collar aluminium smelter workers (paper I) and a cohort of 13000 blue-collar iron-ore miners (papers II-IV), both followed for over 50 years. The outcomes were collected from the Swedish Cause of Death Register and the Swedish Cancer Register. The primary methods of analysis were either Standardized Morbidity Ratios (SMR) or internal comparisons based on Cox or Poisson regression modeling. In paper IV, a g-estimation based on an accelerated failure-time model was performed to estimate the survival ratio. Results: The results from paper I suggested that working as a blue-collar worker metal refiner was associated with increased rates of incidental lung cancer. Elevated rates among short term workers were observed for several outcomes. Paper I also showed that the choice of reference population when calculating SMR could influence the conclusions of the results. In paper II, several outcomes were elevated among the miners compared to the reference population from northern Sweden. However, no outcome except lung cancer was associated with cumulative employment time. The most recurrent pattern of the results was the negative association between cumulative employment time underground and several outcomes. The results from paper III showed that cumulative employment time working outdoors was associated with increased rates of cerebrovascular disease mortality. However, employment with heavy physical workloads did not explain the previously observed decreasing rates in the selected groups of outcomes. The adjustment for the healthy worker survivor effect by g-estimation in paper IV suggested that exposure from respirable dust was associated with elevated mortality risks that could not be observed with standard analytical methods. Conclusion: Our studies found several rates from the cohorts that were elevated compared to external refererence populations but also that long term employments generally were associated with decreasing rates. Furthermore, incidental lung cancer rates was found elevated for the metal refiners. Among the miners, mortality rates of cerebrovascular diseases depended on if work was performed outdoor (higher rates) or underground (lower rates). Methodologically, this thesis has discussed different analytical strategies for handling confounding in occupational cohort studies. Paper IV showed that the healthy worker survivor effect could be adjusted for by performing g-estimation.

  • Learning fractions : transformations between representations from a social semiotic perspective of multimodality
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Norma 11. - Reykjavík : University of Iceland Press. - 9789979549659 ; , s. 217-226
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents a tentative framework for studying the learning of fractions in the context of transformations between different forms of representations. The framework is used in an empirical sample of how eight 10-year-old students express understanding of activities which were developed to challenge them to reflect on different ways of representing aspects of the concept of fractions. The framework is based on a social semiotic perspective of multimodality. The analysis discloses how the framework helps in structuring our understanding of the interplay between representations in the learning of fractions. Specifically, we saw how concrete physical material and gestures complemented the symbolic and spoken language in the students’ solution strategies of different tasks.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Eighth Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education. - : Middle East Technical University. - 9789754293159 ; , s. 766-776
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present paper is to shed light on mathematical knowledge for teaching probability. In particular we investigate critical instances when a teacher tries to keep track on the idea of sampling and random variation by allocating the discussion to an everyday context. The analysis is based on a certain episode of a longer teaching experiment. The analytical construct of contextualization was used as a means to provide structure to the qualitative analysis performed. Our analysis provides insight into the nature and role of teachers’ knowledge of content and teaching. In particular, the study suggests the idea of a meta-contextual knowledge that teachers need to develop in order to keep track of the intended object of learning when allocating their teaching to an everyday context.

  • Designing for digitally enriched Math Talks : The case of pattern generalization
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Eleventh Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education. - Utrech, Netherlands : Freudenthal Group & Freudenthal Institute, Utrecht University, Netherlands and ERME. - 9789073346758 ; , s. 4210-4217

    • Mathematics education is still behind in the implementation of digital technology. Digital technology can support classroom talk, but this potential needs to be further explored. This study reports on a project that develops and explores task design principles, through a series of interventions, that are intended to utilize digital technology to enrich mathematics lessons. The results consist of three design principles together with their theoretical and empirical arguments from analysis of a lesson series about pattern generalization. The three principles exploit opportunities provided by technology to make reasoning available for examination to all students, and to focus students’ attention between different aspects of mathematical reasoning.

  • Introducing a symbolic interactionist approach on teaching mathematics : The case of revoicing as an interactional strategy in the teaching of probability
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education. - : Springer. - 1386-4416 .- 1573-1820. ; 20:1, s. 31-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines an interactional view on teaching mathematics, whereby meaning is co-produced with the students through a process of negotiation. Further, teaching is viewed from a symbolic interactionism perspective, allowing the analysis to focus on the teacher’s role in the negotiation of meaning. Using methods inspired by grounded theory, patterns of teachers’ interaction are categorized. The results show how teachers’ actions, interpretations and intentions form interactional strategies that guide the negotiation of meaning in the classroom. The theoretical case of revoicing as a teacher action, together with interpretations of mathematical objects from probability theory, is used to exemplify conclusions from the proposed perspective. Data are generated from a lesson sequence with two teachers working with known and unknown constant sample spaces with their classes. In the lessons presented in this article, the focus is on negotiations of the meaning of chance. The analysis revealed how the teachers indicate their interpretations of mathematical objects and intentions to the students to different degrees and, by doing so, create opportunities for the students to ascribe meaning to these objects. The discussion contrasts the findings with possible interpretations from other perspectives on teaching.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Digital Experiences in Mathematics Education. - : Springer. - 2199-3246 .- 2199-3254. ; 8:1, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to further our understanding of orchestrating math-talk with digital technology. The technology used is common in Swedish mathematics classrooms and involves personal computers, a projector directed towards a whiteboard at the front of the class and software programs for facilitating communication and collective exploration. We use the construct of instrumental orchestration to conceptualize a teacher’s intentional and systematic organization and use of digital technology to guide math-talk in terms of a collective instrumental genesis. We consider math-talk as a matter of inferential reasoning, taking place in the Game of Giving and Asking for Reasons (GoGAR).The combination of instrumental orchestration and inferential reasoning laid the foundation of a design experiment tha taddressed the research question: How can collective inferential reasoning be orchestrated in a technology-enhanced learning environment? The design experiment was conducted in lower-secondary school (students 14–16 years old) and consisted of three lessons on pattern generalization. Each lesson was tested and refined twice by the research team. The design experiment resulted in the emergence of the FlexTech orchestration, which provided teachers and students with opportunities to utilize the flexibility to construct, switch and mark in the orchestration of an instrumental math-GoGAR.

  • Vascular endothelial growth factor B controls endothelial fatty acid uptake.

  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 464:7290, s. 917-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are major angiogenic regulators and are involved in several aspects of endothelial cell physiology. However, the detailed role of VEGF-B in blood vessel function has remained unclear. Here we show that VEGF-B has an unexpected role in endothelial targeting of lipids to peripheral tissues. Dietary lipids present in circulation have to be transported through the vascular endothelium to be metabolized by tissue cells, a mechanism that is poorly understood. Bioinformatic analysis showed that Vegfb was tightly co-expressed with nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes across a large variety of physiological conditions in mice, pointing to a role for VEGF-B in metabolism. VEGF-B specifically controlled endothelial uptake of fatty acids via transcriptional regulation of vascular fatty acid transport proteins. As a consequence, Vegfb(-/-) mice showed less uptake and accumulation of lipids in muscle, heart and brown adipose tissue, and instead shunted lipids to white adipose tissue. This regulation was mediated by VEGF receptor 1 and neuropilin 1 expressed by the endothelium. The co-expression of VEGF-B and mitochondrial proteins introduces a novel regulatory mechanism, whereby endothelial lipid uptake and mitochondrial lipid use are tightly coordinated. The involvement of VEGF-B in lipid uptake may open up the possibility for novel strategies to modulate pathological lipid accumulation in diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

  • Biomass Potential for Heat, Electricity and Vehicle Fuel in Sweden
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main objective of this thesis was to determine how far a biomass quantity, equal to the potential produced within the Swedish borders, could cover the present energy needs inSwedenwith respect to economic and ecological circumstances. Three scenarios were studied where the available biomass was converted to heat, electricity and vehicle fuel. Three different amounts of biomass supply were studied for each scenario: 1) potential biomass amounts derived from forestry, non-forest land, forest industry and community; 2) the same amounts as in Case 1, plus the potential biomass amounts derived from agriculture; 3) the same amounts as in Case 1, plus 50% of the potential pulpwood quantity. For evaluating the economic and ecological circumstances of using biomass in the Swedish energy system, the scenarios were complemented with energy, cost and emergy analysis. The scenarios indicated that it may be possible to produce 170.2 PJ (47.3 TWh) per year of electricity from the biomass amounts in Case 2. From the same amount of biomass, the maximum annual production of hydrogen was 241.5 PJ (67.1 TWh) per year or 197.2 PJ (54.8 TWh) per year of methanol. The energy analysis showed that the ratio of energy output to energy input for large-scale applications ranged from 1.9 at electric power generation by gasification of straw to 40 at district heating generation by combustion of recovered wood. The cost of electricity at gasification ranged from 7.95 to 22.58 €/GJ. The cost of vehicle work generated by using hydrogen produced from forestry biomass in novel fuel cells was economically competitive compared to today’s propulsion systems. However, the cost of vehicle work generated by using methanol produced from forestry biomass in combustion engines was rather higher compared to use of petrol in petrol engines. The emergy analysis indicated that the only biomass assortment studied with a larger emergy flow from the local environment, in relation to the emergy flow invested from society after conversion, was fuel wood from non-forest land. However, even use of this biomass assortment for production of heat, electricity or vehicle fuels had smaller yields of emergy output in relation to emergy invested from society compared to alternative conversion processes; thus, the net contribution of emergy generated to the economy was smaller compared to these alternative conversion processes.

  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education. - : Springer. - 1386-4416 .- 1573-1820. ; 25:6, s. 697-723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professional learning communities (PLC) have increasingly attracted attention in research on teachers' professional development. The aim of this study is to identify contradictions that can occur and be manifested in PLCs in mathematics. Identifying contradictions in PLCs are important, as the identification and resolution of contradictions are crucial to developing PLCs. We have conceptualized PLCs and contradictions within the Cultural Historical Activity Theory. Our data consist of two iterations of interviews with four teacher leader coaches with extensive experience of coaching teacher leaders of PLCs in mathematics. The study distinguishes 26 manifestations of contradictions, taking the overall forms of dilemmas and conflicts. Our results can be used in designing PLCs in mathematics: they can be used to make visible and increase participants' awareness of contradictions involved in PLCs and thereby increase the possibility that the contradictions serve as sources of support rather than obstacles in the development of PLCs in mathematics.

    • In the last decade, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are increasingly used as models for teachers’ joint efforts in developing their teaching. The overall aim of this licentiate thesis is to expand the knowledge of PLCs in mathematics, by deepening the understanding of aspects that influence the establishment, organization, and implementation of PLCs in mathematics. Specifically, the aim is to contribute with an overview of how PLCs in mathematics are organized and framed, and also to explain what may enable and hinder PLCs in mathematics. To fulfill the purpose, two studies are conducted where Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is used as a conceptual and analytical framework. In the first study, previous research of PLCs in mathematics are synthesized through a configurative literature review, resulting in a description of how PLCs in mathematics are organized and framed. In the study, similarities, and differences between different models of PLCs in mathematics are examined regarding subjects, objects, mediating artifacts, rules, community, division of labor and outcomes. The result shows three different activity systems, with different objects or motives for implementing the PLCs. The activity systems vary concerning the use of mediating artifacts, and what norms regulate the activity system, but are similar regarding participants, context, and division of labor. In the second study, contradictions, and their manifestations in PLCs in mathematics are analyzed. Contradictions may enable or hinder the work of PLCs depending on whether they are identified or not. Contradictions, and their manifestations, are in the study examined through interviews with teacher leader coaches with experience in coaching teacher leaders of PLCs in mathematics. In the study, four contradictions, in and between activity systems, are identified. These four contradictions are manifested through 26 conflicts and dilemmas. The identified contradictions are connected to the norms and traditions that are part of mathematics as a discipline as well as the teacher profession. Taken together, the result of the two studies can be useful in establishing, organizing, and implementing future PLC endeavors.

  • Kinds of Mathematical Reasoning Addressed in Empirical Research in Mathematics Education : A Systematic Review
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Education sciences. - : MDPI. - 2227-7102. ; 10:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mathematical reasoning is gaining increasing significance in mathematics education. It has become part of school curricula and the numbers of empirical studies are growing. Researchers investigate mathematical reasoning, yet, what is being under investigation is diverse—which goes along with a diversity of understandings of the term reasoning. The aim of this article is to provide an overview on kinds of mathematical reasoning that are addressed in mathematics education research. We conducted a systematic review focusing on the question: What kinds of reasoning are addressed in empirical research in mathematics education? We pursued this question by searching for articles in the database Web of Science with the term reason* in the title. Based on this search, we used a systematic approach to inductively find kinds of reasoning addressed in empirical research in mathematics education. We found three domain-general kinds of reasoning (e.g., creative reasoning) as well as six domain-specific kinds of reasoning (e.g., algebraic reasoning). The article gives an overview on these different kinds of reasoning both in a domain-general and domain-specific perspective, which may be of value for both research and practice (e.g., school teaching).

  • Lower secondary school students’ reasoning about compound probability in spinner tasks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mathematical Behavior. - : Elsevier. - 0732-3123 .- 1873-8028. ; 56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we investigate the different ways in which students in lower secondary school (14–15 year-olds) reason about compound stochastic events (CSE). We ask students during clinical interviews to respond to CSE-tasks in a spinner context, where two linked spinners dis-play equal or different sizes of red and white areas. We seek to enrich our knowledge of how students make sense of CSE by not focusing exclusively on sample-space grounded reasoning. We open up the analysis to how students’reasoning can reflect aspects of multiplicative reasoning in relation to The Product Law of Probability. Our results show that students have difficulty in applying well-grounded combinatorial reasoning as well as multiplicative reasoning to the tasks, but they do show intuitive reasoning that reflect aspects of The Product Law of Probability. Two ways of reasoning identified in the current study are area-based part-whole reasoning and lowest-chance reasoning.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Antioxidants in the diet and supplements are widely used to protect against cancer, but clinical trials with antioxidants do not support this concept. Some trials show that antioxidants actually increase cancer risk and a study in mice showed that antioxidants accelerate the progression of primary lung tumors. However, little is known about the impact of antioxidant supplementation on the progression of other types of cancer, including malignant melanoma. We show that administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) increases lymph node metastases in an endogenous mouse model of malignant melanoma but has no impact on the number and size of primary tumors. Similarly, NAC and the soluble vitamin E analog Trolox markedly increased the migration and invasive properties of human malignant melanoma cells but did not affect their proliferation. Both antioxidants increased the ratio between reduced and oxidized glutathione in melanoma cells and in lymph node metastases, and the increased migration depended on new glutathione synthesis. Furthermore, both NAC and Trolox increased the activation of the small guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) RHOA, and blocking downstream RHOA signaling abolished antioxidant-induced migration. These results demonstrate that antioxidants and the glutathione system play a previously unappreciated role in malignant melanoma progression.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since mathematical tasks are central to the teaching of mathematics, it is crucial to extend our knowledge of the characteristic features of tasks that are conducive to student development of problem-solving and reasoning abilities as well as conceptual understanding. The aim of the dissertation is to investigate how different types of mathematical tasks affect student learning and choice of learning strategies. This is done through a twofold approach: 1) to test the hypothesis that tasks affording students the opportunity and responsibility for constructing knowledge are more effective learning tools than tasks for which the solution is presented, and 2) to analyse the educational message embedded in the teacher’s formulation of the mathematical tasks on the Internet. The main conclusion is that the type of task students engage with is important for their learning of new things. The participants who were engaged in creating their own solutions were less successful during practice but performed better on the tests in comparison with the participants who were involved in solving the tasks with a given method. The results of the sub-studies indicate that in a learning situation consisting of repeated practice of a solution method, the results are closely related to the students’ cognitive ability. The investigation shows that tasks inviting the opportunity to be solved through creative reasoning, to a certain extent serve a compensatory function in relation to students’ cognitive resources. This means that the participants need not put in so much effort in the test situation if they have practiced creative reasoning. One conclusion to be drawn from the study of the educational message in Internet documents, when it comes to teachers’ formulation of tasks, is that there are many teachers who design tasks that encourage young students’ creative reasoning. However, the educational message in the documents shows that the teachers demand relatively little of the students in the majority of the tasks. The result indicates that there is some uncertainty about how to formulate and use tasks to support the older student’s mathematical development. The way the tasks are formulated indicates a lack of discursive tools to clarify the intended educational situation. Thus, the qualities in the tasks are hidden resources.

  • Incidental Gallbladder Cancer : Incidence, predictors, management and outcome in a Swedish population
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure and incidental gallbladder cancer is a rare and unexpected finding at a cholecystectomy performed upon benign indications. Whether to perform routine or selective histopathology of the gallbladder specimen is still a subject for discussion. The prognosis of gallbladder cancer is largely affected by tumour stage and treatment.Aims: The overall aim was to study whether routine histological examination of the gallbladder specimen is of clinical and health economic value; determine if there are any predictive factors of incidental gallbladder cancer at benign cholecystectomy and compare the management and outcome of incidental gallbladder cancer patients in Sweden. Methods: All studies were based on registry data from GallRiks (The Swedish Registry for Gallstone Surgery and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) between 2007 and 2016, with some modifications between studies. Complemental cross-linkage was made to national registries, and medical records were reviewed. Papers I, II and III were population-based observational studies with prospectively and retrospectively collected data. Paper IV was a health economic evaluation based on the results from papers I and III.Results and conclusions: Hospitals submitting >75 per cent of gallbladder specimens diagnosed a higher proportion of incidental gallbladder cancer than did hospitals submitting ≤25 per cent of samples (paper I). Incidental gallbladder cancer was more prevalent in older patients, women and patients with acute or previous cholecystitis, as well as ongoing jaundice. The risk model based on predictive preoperative factors was further improved by adding a macroscopic assessment of the gallbladder (paper II). Predictive factors for gallbladder cancer appeared to have an impact on which specimens were submitted in hospitals with a selective approach of histopathology (paper I). For pT2 and pT3 patients, re-resection improved diseasespecific survival, although these groups differed in terms of age and comorbidity (paper III). Residual disease was an independent factor for impaired survival. A change to routine histopathology of gallbladder specimens in Sweden would lead to increased costs with little improved health outcomes. Instead, a more standardized approach to selective histology would be needed (paper IV).

  • Representationer, visualisering och resonemang i geometri : Praktiknära studier i digitala lärmiljöer
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation was to gain a deeper understanding of how teaching in digital environments can be designed to give students opportunities to develop knowledge in two- and three-dimensional geometry. The dissertation consists of two sub-studies, the first using an ethnographic approach in which the researcher followed a teacher's teaching in a digital environment, in a Grade 9 class for a period of five weeks. In the first study, learning was defined based on reification theory, which describes that the understanding of mathematical concepts develops from operational to structural understanding. Data were collected through video-assisted observations, interviews and student tests. This material was analyzed with a focus on the ways the teacher used the digital tools to create mathematical situations that offered students opportunities to work with different representations and mathematical concepts. In the second study, characterized as educational design research,t he researcher along with two teachers designed teaching in two classes in Grades 8 and 9. The focus in this second study was shifted to how geometry teaching in digital environments can be designed to offer students the opportunity to develop their understanding of, and ways of interpreting, geometric figures. For support in designing lessons, Brousseau's theory of didactical situations, based on a constructivist approach to learning, was adopted. Data were collected through video-assisted observations and screen recordings of students´ work. This material was analyzed in two steps. First, the focus was on how students worked with the figures in relation to the assumptions made in the design. Thereafter, the attention was on properties of the designed environment that were considered to affect the students and to lead to changes in how they interpreted and used the figures when working with geometric tasks. The study resulted in five design principles that can serve as a guide for designing teaching in digital environments. Thus, taken together, the dissertation´s two sub-studies show that using digital tools in teaching gives the teacher not only more didactic variables to work with when creating lessons, but also, based on the needs that arise in teaching, more tools for shedding light on what some students may have difficulty detecting. Furthermore, the results show that digital tools can help in the creation of environments that stimulate students' way of examining, testing and reasoning about geometric figures and their properties, which are seen as important prerequisites for developing good knowledge in the field.

  • Task design for differentiated instruction in mixed-ability mathematics classrooms : Manifestations of contradictions in a professional learning community
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Mathematics Teacher Education and Development. - : Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia. - 1442-3901. ; 23:3, s. 78-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to investigate task design for differentiated instruction in mathematics in professional learning communities. Based on the cultural-historical activity theory, we conceptualize a professional learning community as an activity system and use the analytical construct of contradictions to give an account of structures that bring forward the teachers’ work. Eight Swedish upper secondary teachers, engaged in designing tasks for differentiated instruction in mixed-ability mathematics classrooms, are studied. The analysis outlines three contradictions, manifested as three dilemmas, and shows how the teachers, by noticing a dilemma and making it an explicit object of inquiry, came to address a diversity of issues related to differentiated instruction in mathematics. For example, the teachers addressed students’ different learning needs, problem-solving activities for amixed-ability classroom, and design of tasks that are challenging for all students. With input from our findings on the three dilemmas, we then discuss the design of a task analysis guide as a means for facilitating the development of a professional learning community that is inquiry-oriented with astrong content focus on designing tasks for differentiated instruction in mixed-ability mathematics classrooms.

    • Background. Outcomes of previous health economic evaluations comparing minilaparotomy cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy have been inconsistent.Objective. To compare costs for minilaparotomy cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and to study changes in quality of life induced by these operations.Design. Single-blind, randomized controlled trial, run from 1 March 1997 to 30 April 1999.Setting. One university hospital and four non-university hospitals in Sweden.Main measures. Cost and perceived health estimation according to the global quality of life instrument EuroQol-5D.Results. Of 1719 cholecystectomy patients at five centres, 724 entered the trial and were treated with minilaparotomy cholecystectomy or laparoscopic cholecystectomy, 362 in each group. Total health care costs were less for minilaparotomy cholecystectomy than for laparoscopic cholecystectomy (median values US$2428 for minilaparotomy cholecystectomy versus US$2613 or US$3006 for laparoscopic cholecystectomy with 100 operations per year and reusable trocars or 50 operations per year and disposable trocars, respectively). There was no significant difference in total costs (including costs due to loss of production) between minilaparotomy cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy with 100 operations per year and reusable trocars in laparoscopic cholecystectomy (US$3731 versus US$3649, respectively). However, in calculations assuming 50 operations per year and disposable trocars in laparoscopic cholecystectomy, this technique was more expensive than minilaparotomy cholecystectomy (US$4042 versus US$3731). Health-related quality of life was slightly but significantly lower for the minilaparotomy cholecystectomy group 1 week after surgery. One month and 1 year postoperatively no difference between the randomized groups was found.Conclusion. Total costs did not differ between minilaparotomy cholecystectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy with high-volume surgery and disposable trocars, whereas laparoscopic cholecystectomy was more expensive with fewer operations and disposable trocars. The gain in health-related quality of life with laparoscopic cholecystectomy compared with minilaparotomy cholecystectomy was small and of limited duration.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education. - Morelia. Mexico : Guevara Impresores.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the learning of probability. The analytical construct of contextualization is used to explain how students deal with compound random phenomenon in an explorative ICT setting. In this setting the students were offered opportunities to interact with different representations of such phenomenon. The analysis follows a specific group of two students. The analysis shows how students’ understanding of the compound events varies with their interpretations of the situation. In particular, we notice how the two students differ when trying to connect theoretical and experimental representations of probability.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. - : National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. - 0021-8251 .- 1945-2306. ; 51:5, s. 574-599
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study introduces inferentialism and, particularly, the Game of Giving and Asking for Reasons (GoGAR), as a new theoretical perspective for investigating qualities of procedural and conceptual knowledge in mathematics. The study develops a framework in which procedural knowledge and conceptual knowledge are connected to limited and rich qualities of GoGARs. General characteristics of limited GoGARs are their atomistic, implicit, and noninferential nature, as opposed to rich GoGARs, which are holistic, explicit, and inferential. The mathematical discussions of a Grade 6 class serve the case to show how the framework of procedural and conceptual GoGARs can be used to give an account of qualitative differences in procedural and conceptual knowledge in the teaching of mathematics.

  • An Inferentialist Perspective on How Note-taking can Constrain the Orchestration of Math-Talk

  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 63:7, s. 1121-1133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to investigate relationships between note-taking and the orchestrating of math-talk in whole-class teaching. A lesson on (average) velocity in a Swedish Grade 6 has been observed. Taking an inferentialist stance on human understanding, the study conceptualizes teaching and learning from the perspective of how students come to be engaged in the language practice of giving and asking for reasons. The study shows how note-taking supports a teacher-student relationship where the teacher produces content and the students’ participation is reduced to consume content. It shows how note-taking can support descriptive math-talk of concepts and symbols and step-by-step procedural math-talk, connected to the goal of providing students examples of tasks, similar to the tasks in their textbook.

  • Ingår i: Nordic research in mathematics education. - Turku : University of Turku, Department of Teacher Education. - 9789525993172 ; , s. 318-328

    • The approach of this paper builds on the assumption that there is a need to develop local, domain specific instructional theories for the learning of probability. The aim of the present paper is to explore the qualitative hypothesis of building such a theory on the combination of students’ own experimentations with samples and principles of variation. By using data from 12-13-year old students investigating the probability of obtaining a certain colour when picking, at random, one piece from a bag with six different colours of the candy, the paper shows how variations in students’ own experimentations with samples can be used as means to explore and support students’ understanding of critical features of experimental probability.

    • This study reports on how instruction that is based on engaging students in practical experiments can create challenges and opportunities in the teaching of the relationship between a classical a priori and a frequentist model in estimating the probability of random outcomes. Knowledge is assumed to lie in the inferentialist relationships within the game of giving and asking for reasons (GoGAR). We report on dilemmas (challenges vs. opportunities) faced by the teachers and the researchers who co-designed the tasks: (i) whether it is effective to avoid the elicitation of deterministic reasons for random behaviour or to invite students to reflect on the lack of power of such reasons; (ii) whether the GoGAR is best served by accepting any responses from students or by challenging responses in order to clarify what is normative; (iii) whether the sample space that generates random outcomes should be revealed or not.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Statistics Education Research Journal. - 1570-1824. ; 12:2, s. 71-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the relationship between deterministic and probabilistic reasoning when students are asked to experiment on a real-world situation involving uncertainty. Twelve students, aged eight to nine years, participated in an outdoor teaching activity that called for reflection on the growth of sunflowers within the frame of a sunflower lottery. A basic feature of the situation was that the students were involved in the process of creating their own empirical data of the growth. However, the study shows not only that the students do not make use of data for predicting the outcome of an uncertain event, but also how this can be explained by students' attention to deterministic features of the situation, brought to the fore within an ecology context and connected to a conceptual principle of ‘sharing’.
