  • Dataset on multichannel connectivity and video transmission carried on commercial 3G/4G networks in southern Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Data in Brief. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-3409. ; 25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this data article, we report real-world data on multichannel connectivity and videotransmission carried on commercial 3G/4G networks in the region of Skåne, southern Sweden. The data reported here complement the research article “Technical feasibility and ambulance nurses’ view of a digital telemedicine system in pre-hospital stroke care – A pilot study” (1). The dataset was originally collected as part of a project aimed to test in a clinical setting the quality and usefulness of a linked image and sound transmission in the prehospital assessment of patients with suspected stroke. The project built on previous studies indicating that using high-quality telemedicine in stroke cases is feasible and has already impacted local stroke care Schwamm et al., 2009. In addition, studies support the hypothesis that stroke telemedicine consultations, compared with telephone-only, result in more accurate decision-making Demaerschalk et al., 2012. Cellular networks for 3/4G networks have been greatly improved, a prerequisite for the use of these networks for e. g. medical applications. However, connectivity maps for planning purposes are usually based on theoretical values that do not consider smaller features of the terrain such as large trees, hills, rocks etc. and that may interfere with connectivity. To leverage several networks, multichannel devices have been developed that split the original transmission onto several independent channels and recombine the transmission on the receiver side. This setup allows to increase the available bandwidth and introduces at the same time an element of redundancy, provided that several providers with independent networks are used.

  • Toxicity evaluation of PEDOT/biomolecular composites intended for neural communication electrodes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: BIOMEDICAL MATERIALS. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-6041 .- 1748-605X. ; 4:4, s. 045009-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrodes coated with the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) possess attractive electrochemical properties for stimulation or recording in the nervous system. Biomolecules, added as counter ions in electropolymerization, could further improve the biomaterial properties, eliminating the need for surfactant counter ions in the process. Such PEDOT/biomolecular composites, using heparin or hyaluronic acid, have previously been investigated electrochemically. In the present study, their biocompatibility is evaluated. An agarose overlay assay using L929 fibroblasts, and elution and direct contact tests on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells are applied to investigate cytotoxicity in vitro. PEDOT: heparin was further evaluated in vivo through polymer-coated implants in rodent cortex. No cytotoxic response was seen to any of the PEDOT materials tested. The examination of cortical tissue exposed to polymer-coated implants showed extensive glial scarring irrespective of implant material (Pt:polymer or Pt). However, quantification of immunological response, through distance measurements from implant site to closest neuron and counting of ED1+ cell density around implant, was comparable to those of platinum controls. These results indicate that PEDOT: heparin surfaces were non-cytotoxic and show no marked difference in immunological response in cortical tissue compared to pure platinum controls.

  • Metal contamination at a wood preservation site : characterisation and experimental studies on remediation
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - 0048-9697 .- 1879-1026. ; 290:03-jan, s. 165-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this investigation was to determine the occurrence of As, Cu, Cr and Zn in the soil at an abandoned wood preservation unit and to examine some possible extractants for the contaminants in the soil. The mean As content of the contaminated surface soils (0-10 cm) was 186 mg kg(-1), where as the mean concentrations of Cu, Cr and Zn in soils from the contaminated area were 26, 29 and 91 mg kg(-1), respectively. The elevated As content in the mineral soils is related to adsorption of inorganic As phases in the fine grained fractions, which are characterised by large surface area and high positive surface charge under the current acidic conditions. Cu and Cr were found to be rather mobile, which is reflected in their lower abundance in soils and significant accumulation in sediments in the drainage leaving the area. The fine fraction of the soil (<0.125 mm) has an average metal content increased by nearly 34% as compared to the <2-mm fraction conventionally used for the analysis and assessment of soil contamination. The <2-mm fraction constitutes approximately 65% of the total weight while the fine fraction (< 0.125 mm) constitutes approximately 10%. These facts, taken together, are essential for the choice of remediation measures. Oxalate solutions have been tested as extractants for soil remediation. Dark acid oxalate extraction dissolves the amorphous Al- and Fe-oxides and hydroxides and mobilises the adsorbed inorganic As species. Oxalate also acts as a ligand for the cationic heavy metals, releasing them from exchangeable sites. With a three-step sequential leaching, up to 98-99% of the metals could be removed. At lower concentrations and higher pH, the leaching decreased to approximately 70%.

  • Fewer problems with dry nasal mucous membranes following local use of sesame oil
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Rhinology. - 0300-0729. ; 38:4, s. 200-3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many people experience problems with a dry nasal mucous membrane, often without wondering why. Their noses itch and burn and dried mucus collects there. These problems are exacerbated during the winter, in air-conditioned environments and after nasal irradiation. Twenty patients experiencing problems with dryness of the nose were selected from outpatient clinics, together with twenty patients who had previously undergone nasal irradiation. During the first five days no treatment was administered. For the following twenty days the patients sprayed sesame oil into each nostril three times a day. For the last five days no treatment was given. When both groups received treatment and sprayed sesame oil (Nozoil) in their noses, the nasal problems decreased significantly. The greatest effect is exerted on dryness. The side effects from using this oil are few in number and mild.

  • Alpha-galactosylceramide enhances mucosal immunity to oral whole-cell cholera vaccines
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Mucosal Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1933-0219. ; 12, s. 1055-1064
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae) that results in 3–4 million cases globally with 100,000–150,000 deaths reported annually. Mostly confined to developing nations, current strategies to control the spread of cholera include the provision of safe drinking water and improved sanitation and hygiene, ideally in conjunction with oral vaccination. However, difficulties associated with the costs and logistics of these strategies have hampered their widespread implementation. Specific challenges pertaining to oral cholera vaccines (OCVs) include a lack of safe and effective adjuvants to further enhance gut immune responses, the complex and costly multicomponent vaccine manufacturing, limitations of conventional liquid formulation and the lack of an integrated delivery platform. Herein we describe the use of the orally active adjuvant α-Galactosylceramide (α-GalCer) to strongly enhance intestinal bacterium- and toxin-specific IgA responses to the OCV, Dukoral ® in C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice. We further demonstrate the mucosal immunogenicity of a novel multi-antigen, single-component whole-cell killed V. cholerae strain and the enhancement of its immunogenicity by adding α-GalCer. Finally, we report that combining these components and recombinant cholera toxin B subunit in the SmPill ® minisphere delivery system induced strong intestinal and systemic antigen-specific antibody responses. © 2019, The Author(s).

  • Granular iron reactive barriers for the degradation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Vatten. - 0042-2886. ; 56:4, s. 261-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of batch and column experiments that investigated the degradation of chlorinated solvents bv zerovalent granular iron. These experiments were designed to produce data essential for the installation of a field-scale permeable reactive barrier at a field site with groundwater contaminated bv perchloroethylene (PCE) and other less chlorinated ethenes. The batch tests were conducted in order to identify a suitable iron product for the reactive matrix in a barrier. The test results indicated that an American iron product, because of its greater surface area, was superior in the degradation of PCE relative to other selected granular iron products. The column experiments were designed to determine the rates of PCE, TCE and cis-DCE removal and the column residence times needed to achieve solvent degradation. For a column composed of a mixture of 50% granular iron and 50% sand, the results showed that the time for a 50 % decrease (t50) in solvent concentration was < 1.3 hours for PCE, ca. 1.4 hours for TCE, and ca. 1.9 hours for cis-DCE. These results can be used to dimension a field-scale reactive barrier, where the groundwater residence time must be in excess of these t50 values.

  • Virtual screening and bioassay study of novel inhibitors for dengue virus mRNA cap (nucleoside-2'O)-methyltransferase
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0968-0896 .- 1464-3391. ; 15:24, s. 7795-7802
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report high-throughput structure-based virtual screening of putative Flavivirus 2'-O-methyltransferase inhibitors together with results from subsequent bioassay tests of selected compounds. Potential inhibitors for the S-adenosylmethionine binding site were explored using 2D similarity searching, pharmacophore filtering and docking. The inhibitory activities of 15 top-ranking compounds from the docking calculations were tested on a recombinant methyltransferase with the RNA substrate (7Me)GpppAC(5). Local and global docking simulations were combined to estimate the ligand selectivity for the target site. The results of the combined computational and experimental screening identified a novel inhibitor, with a previously unknown scaffold, that has an IC(50) value of 60 microM.

  • From “FIBER” to “FIRE” : construct validation and refinement of the socioemotional wealth scale in family firms
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The socio-emotional wealth perspective is a framework widely used to examine managerial decisions, particularly within the field of family business. We evaluate, refine, and validate the FIBER 27-item scale developed by Berrone et al. (2012) as a psychometric instrument to measure the socioemotional wealth construct (SEW), defined as affective endowment embedded by family owners in their business. The findings suggest that SEW is a superordinate multidimensional construct that captures socioemotional utilities in family firms and their impact on financial performance.
