The level scheme of Sn-103 has been established by means of particle-gated gamma gamma coincidences. The energy spacing between the g(7/2) and d(5/2) neutron single-particle orbitals is determined from the excited states in Sn-103.

    • The first evidence for excited states in Ag-95 is presented. Ag-95 is the heaviest T-z = 1/2 nucleus for which gamma-rays have been identified. The reaction Ca-40(Ni-58, 1p2n)Ag-95 was used in the experiment, which resulted in the assignment of three gamma-rays to Ag-95. A detector system consisting of the detector arrays Euroball, Neutron Wall and Euclides was used to detect gamma-rays, neutrons and charged particles, respectively.

  • Cd-98(48)50 : The two-proton-hole spectrum in Sn-100(50)50

    • Excited states in Cd-98, two proton holes from Sn-100, were identified and studied for the first time, using in-beam spectroscopy with highly selective ancillary detectors. The structure of the (pi g(9/2))(-2) two-proton-hole spectrum below a T-1/2 = 0.48(16) mu s isomer is deduced and compared to shell-model predictions. A tentative I-pi = (8(+)) assignment, as suggested by systematics, yields a strongly reduced B(E2,8(+) --> 6(+)) = 0.44((+20)(-10)) W.u., corresponding to an effective proton charge of e(pi) = 0.85((+20)(-10))e, which is at variance with existing theoretical predictions.

    • The two nuclei Cd-98 and Sn-102, closest neighbours of Sn-100, have been studied with a recoil catcher setup, following the reactions: Ni-58(Ti-46, alpha 2n)Cd-98 and Ni-58(Cr-50, alpha 2n)Sn-102. Long lived isomeric states were measured in Cd-98 I-pi = (8+), t(1/2) = 0.48(8) mu s and in Sn-102 I-pi = (6(+)) with t(1/2) = 1.0(6) mu s. The proposed experimental level schemes of the isomeric decay are presented and compared to the shell model predictions.

    • We present the FERRUM Project, an international collaboration aiming at a production and evaluation of oscillator strengths (transition probabilities) of selected spectral lines of singly ionized iron group elements, that are of astrophysical relevance. The results obtained include measurements and calculations of permitted and forbidden lines of Fe II. The data have been applied to both emission and absorption lines in astrophysical spectra. We make comparisons between experimental, theoretical and astrophysical f-values. We give a general review of the various measurements, and discuss the UV8 multiplet of Fe II around 1610 Šin detail.

    • High-spin states in Sb-106 have been investigated in the Fe-54(Ni-58, 1α 1p1n) reaction by in-beam γ-spectroscopic methods using the EUROBALL detector array equipped with charged particle and neutron detectors. On the basis of measured γγ-coincidence relations, angular distributions, and linear polarization ratios a significantly extended level scheme has been constructed up to spin and parity I-π = (19(-)) and E-x ∼ 6.5 MeV. The experimental results are interpreted within the framework of the gdsh shell model using a realistic effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. Candidates for states with fully aligned angular momenta in the π(d(5/2), g(7/2))(1) v (d(5/2), g(7/2))(5) valence space are identified at 4338 and 5203 keV, as well as in the π(d(5/2), g(7/2))(1) V(d(5/2), g(7/2))(4)h(11/2)(1) space at 6087, 6573 and 6783 keV.

    • The NORDBALL silicon detector array for detecting light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation reactions was simulated with the Monte-Carlo method. The data from the reaction of 261 MeV Ni-58 ions with Cr-50 nuclei in a 4.8 mg/cm(2) thick target was used to adjust the simulation parameters. Relative population of residual nuclei in the reaction was determined, by comparing the intensities of gamma -rays.

    • The two metastable levels 5d 2D3∕2 and 5d 2D5∕2 in Ba II both show extremely long lifetimes of the order of several tens of seconds each. This has been found both by experiments and by theoretical predictions. The small transition probabilities associated with these two levels make them interesting and challenging for theoreticians as well as for experimentalists. Several calculations and measurements of these two lifetimes have been made previously but discrepancies between the results are present. This article presents values of τ=89.4±15.6 s for the 2D3∕2 level and τ=32.0±4.6 s for the 2D5∕2 level measured in a beam-laser experiment performed at the ion storage ring CRYRING. These values are supported by our new calculations resulting in τ=82.0 s for the 2D3∕2 level and τ=31.6 s for the 2D5∕2 level.

    • We have extended the laser probing technique at the CRYRING storage ring to measurement of the extremely long lifetime (28 s) of the metastable 3d2(3P)4s b 4P5/2 level in Ti II. The result obtained demonstrates the power of this method for investigation of such long-lived levels. This is the first experimental lifetime investigation of metastable states in Ti II.

    • We report on experimental transition probabilities for thirteenforbidden [Fe II] lines originating from three different metastable FeIi levels. Radiative lifetimes have been measured of two metastablestates by applying a laser probing technique on a stored ion beam.Branching ratios for the radiative decay channels, i.e. M1 and E2transitions, are derived from observed intensity ratios of forbiddenlines in astrophysical spectra and compared with theoretical data. Thelifetimes and branching ratios are combined to derive absolutetransition probabilities, A-values.We present the first experimental lifetime values for the two Fe IIlevels a4G9/2 and b2H11/2and A-values for 13 forbidden transitions froma6S5/2, a4G9/2 andb4D7/2 in the optical region. A discrepancybetween the measured and calculated values of the lifetime for theb2H11/2 level is discussed in terms of levelmixing. We have used the code CIV3 to calculate transitionprobabilities of the a6D-a6S transitions.We have also studied observational branching ratios for lines from 5other metastable Fe II levels and compared them to calculated values. Aconsistency in the deviation between calibrated observational intensityratios and theoretical branching ratios for lines in a wider wavelengthregion supports the use of [Fe II] lines for determination of reddening.

The excited structures are discussed in terms of collectivity and the shell model. The excitations are interpreted to be based on d5/2, g7/2 and h(11/2) both for protons and neutrons and g(9/2) for protons. The systematical behaviour of the specific states in the Sn isotopes is studied in the mass range of A = 106-118.

A nonproportional behavior was observed, mostly pronounced for alpha particles on YAP(Ce). The results are understood in terms of delta-rays effect.

    • Experimental data on p-n multiplets appearing in the nuclei near double-magic Sn-100 accesible in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation experiments have been analyzed. Proton-rich nuclei in this region have been investigated using the NORDBALL array. A Ni-58 beams at energies of 270 Mev on Fe-54 and 261 MeV on Cr-50 targets were used. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4 pi charged particle multi-detector set-up together with a 1 pi neutron detector wall placed in the forward direction. On the basis of gamma gamma-coincidence and angular correlation relations a level schemes of several light Sn, In, Sb, Te and I nuclei were observed for the first time in the present experiment. The observed structure of nuclei are discussed in the framework of the nuclear shell-model. The p-n multiplets in the A similar to 100 region corresponding to the nucleon pairs with mixed configurations has been considered as a playground for the tests of the T = 0 and T = 1 parts of the effective interaction.

    • Excited states in 102Sn have been identified for the first time, in an in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic experiment. Two γ-ray transitions with energies 1472 and 497 keV following the decay of the seniority 6+ isomer with t1/2 = 1.0(5) μs were unambiguously assigned to 102Sn. Due to the very low cross section of about 2 μb for producing 102Sn in the reaction 50Cr(58Ni,1α2n), a highly selective detector setup utilizing NORDBALL ancillary detectors and a recoil catcher device was used. High γ-ray detection efficiency was achieved with two EUROBALL Ge cluster detectors.

    • High-spin states of the neutron deficient (100)pd nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 4p alpha) and Zn-70(S-36,6n) heavy-ion induced reactions. For the detection of evaporated particles and gamma rays the NORDBALL array equipped with ancillary detectors and the EUROGAM II detector system were utilized. By the use of in-beam spectroscopic methods 89 transitions belonging to (100)pd have been observed, 49 of which were identified for the first time. The level scheme has been extended up to E-X approximate to 16 MeV excitation energy and I approximate to 25h. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of cranked shell model calculations. Maximal spin alignments were found in the (pig(9/2))(12+)(-4) (vd(5/2),g(7/2)(3)h(11/2))(13-) and (pig(9/2)(-3)p(1/2))(11-)(vd(5/2)g(7/2)(3)h(11/2))(13-) configurations. Possible existence of octupole correlations is discussed on the basis of 6 (E 1)lB(E2) values deduced for the decays of high-spin levels in the yrast negative-parity band.

    • The radiative lifetimes of the metastable a 9DJ (J = 2-5) levels in Eu II have been measured by laser probing of a stored ion beam. The lifetimes of all four J levels are slightly above 1 s. A deviation from the expected energy dependence of the decay rates for electric quadrupole transitions is observed and discussed.

    • The lifetime of two metastable levels in Fe+ has been measured by laser probing of a stored ion beam. In the dense spectrum of Fe+, the metastable levels a 6S5/2 and b 4D7/2 were selected and their lifetimes were determined to be 230+/-30 and 530+/-30 ms, respectively. The lifetimes are compared with previous theoretical results. Metastable lifetime measurements of Fe+ are of great importance for interpretation of spectra from astronomical objects. The present experiment opens for the possibilities to investigate lifetimes of metastable states in complex atomic ions, which have, so far, been unexplored.

    • A commercially available off the shelf CMOS Image Sensor was irradiated with neutron and proton beams. The Image Sensor is equipped with standard video output. The data were collected on VHS videotapes and analyzed off-line after digitization. The camera chip with 110 000 pixels each having 12 x 12 mum(2) size, shows the nuclear reactions occurring in the sensitive layer as bright spots or tracks. Several applications are suggested based on the inexpensive CMOS Image Sensor.

    • The scintillation response of BaF2 and YAP: Ce to protons. a particles, O-16 and Si-28 ions in the 5-30 MeV range has been investigated. The ratio between the fast and slow parts of the scintillator signal for BaF2 has been used to separate protons, a particles and heavier ions, and the dependence of this ratio on the particle energy has been studied. The time constants and intensities of the two components of the YAP: Ce signal were measured, as were the time constant and intensity of the weak component of the slow part of the BaF2 signal. Furthermore, the dependence of the light yield on the particle energy has been investigated for both BaF2 and YAP: Ce.

    • Dielectronic recombination of Pb53+ has been studied and a resonance is detected only similar to 10(-4) eV above the ground state. The possibility to determine the Pb53+ (4p(1/2)) - Ph53+ (4s(1/2)) energy splitting with a similar accuracy from the determination of the resonance position is discussed. Such a precision can only be achieved by calculations which treat quantum electrodynamics (QED) in a many-body environment at a level which can still not be reached. A fully relativistic many-body calculation of the splitting is described and the uncertainties are discussed.

    • A device for the detection of highly charged heavy ions in the CRYRING accelerator is presented. The system consists of a YAP: Ce scintillator, including a set of reflectors and lenses for the transmission of the scintillation light to the PM-tube. The performance of the system has been tested in measurements with electron cooled heavy ion beams.
